"Bleh! Not that great."
2.5 starson by opjosePros: Good SNR and latency
Cons: No MIDI SYNTH!
Summary: This is basically a good A/D D/A board with NONE of the synth features found on even the cheap SBLive series.
Midi is interpreted and emulated via Creative's software synth... which is frankly quite poor.
For a card in this price range I at least expected a full hardware midi implementation and synth.

There are so many good software MIDI sampler solutions now that I'm a little puzzled why you would even *want* onboard MIDI from your sound card.

There are a ton of very good MIDI solutions that drive right past affordable and don't stop until they hit dirt cheap cheap. You can download Cakewalk Music Creator 3 (with Virtual Sound Canvas) from Cakewalk for a whopping $29, and if you have soundfont patches for other Creative cards, there are free VST and DXi soundfont players on the web that will work with Music Creator.

For that matter, if quality is more important than price, the GigaStudio software sampler will dust any hardware sampler ever made, whether for a computer or standalone.

At this point, hardware MIDI samplers build into sound card are relics of an earlier era, and shouldn't be necessary for any practical use.
