Attention all fledgling DJs: Read the next 600 words very carefully--they might just change your life. Being a vinyl DJ has traditionally required a high level of skill combined with a massive record collection for mining those obscure beats and samples. The new, scratchable, dual-CD decks make DJing a little cheaper, since you can use CD-Rs burned with free MP3s, but that's still a fairly costly option. And if you want to use effects and a sampler, you'll be laying out an even more prodigious sum. We like the DM2 because it combines two scratchable decks, a sampler, a cross-fader, and an effects box into one unit for an absurdly low price. Best of all, it's much easier to use than any other DJ tools.

A peripheral to beat the band
How did Mixman cram so much into the DM2? By taking advantage of the most powerful music tool in the history of the world: the PC. The DM2 functions like a keyboard or a mouse. There are hardly any electronics within the console itself, just movable parts that send a signal over a USB cable to your computer, where the processing, sound storage, and audio playback occur. The console itself houses two round decks, which control eight samples apiece and are bordered by two rubberized belts for scratching, as well as a few other DJ tools. Essentially, the DM2 is a hardware version of the Mixman Studio software. Trying to DJ with a mouse on a screen is like DJing underwater with one finger, so the DM2 is a welcome change that turns your computer into a lean, mean, electronic music machine.

In order to provide users with isolated tracks from songs, Mixman made licensing deals with artists of varying degrees of fame. When you buy the DM2, you get 30 songs, each split into 16 different tracks (one for each sample button on the console). You can DJ with any of the samples from those songs by pressing the Sample buttons. You can easily scratch any sample or set it to repeat. It takes just minutes to learn how to cross-fade between the sample decks, solo samples, or combinations of samples, and to apply any of the 27 effects to the overall mix.

Our only complaint with the interface is that, initially, it's hard to find the onscreen master volume control, which you really need to locate since the program resets your computer's volume level every time you run it. Incidentally, you can find the control by clicking the speaker icon above the tempo display.

Yes, it can play your own samples
It's great that Mixman bundled the DM2 with these 30 songs because you can get started right away. (Mixman has more songs broken into samples for sale on its Web site.) But more advanced DJs will want to import their own samples. The easiest way to load a sample is to plug a computer microphone in to your sound card's microphone jack and record your voice or another sound into the program. Then you can play, scratch, and add effects to your voice alongside the other samples in the mix. But you can also assign any uncompressed WAV file on your computer to any of the 16 sample buttons on the console. Even better, you can use the Mixman StudioXPro (click the Studio Pro tab) software to quantize your samples and import them into the DM2 so that they'll all play at the same beat. The ability to import these samples makes the DM2 something that even professional DJs might like. We asked renowned DJ Lesser if there was anything missing from the DM2, and he said he'd probably be able to incorporate the device into his setup. However, he did mention that the DM2 would be even more useful if it had VST plug-in support.

Naturally, you can export your mixes at CD quality, which is great if you want to make an MP3, a CD, or import the mix as a track into your digital multitracking software.

At $80, the Mixman DM2 is an extraordinary value. Everyone at CNET had to play with the unit we had, so we think even nonmusical people will get a kick out of it. And if you want to get started in the DJ world, the DM2 seems like the logical first step.

Pros: well it actually can be used as a midi device with virtual dj or traktor if you dont know what your doing. great piece of hardware have had hours of use and fun with this thing. It been a well used piece of my arsenal for over 9 years

Cons: the crossfader. But thats why i put in a ultraglide fader.

Review: bottom line is this thing gives you the best bang for your buck with out having to buy wasteful hercules deejay or anything else until your ready to take the next step.

Very fun if you can calibrate!!

Pros: Great sound and makes time fly

Cons: Installation was hard to do. No Playlist. Must buy more music.

Review: This is a totaly awsome product. I got it at Best Buy and love it. Only problem was the installation. When the program told me to calibrate the joystick it would not detect the controler. I had to download the controler drivers of windows update then install the patch found at playdigitalblue.com. Other than that im trying to make my mixing sound good.

limeted but easy to use

Pros: Easy to install, controler is fun to use, monster of a product with loads of ram and a product like sound forge or any beat maker, cheap, good for beginners with included software, can be used with pros or advanced beginners with other programs. Supports

Cons: Only supports mixman "track" files and wave, No beat or synth programs included, bug sometimes always tell you there is not enougth ram for wave samples. Songs for techno and dnb are dated, house song suck.

Pros: Awesome for people who compose electronic music and want some good scratch sounds for their songs without having to buy expensive turntables Very easy to use Ability to import .WAV files for scratching

Cons: Only useful if you use other programs to compose - it's awful for serious DJ'ing and composing since you can only load 16 tracks per mix and you cannot change them as you would with real DJ equipment. The WARP effects weren't too customizable either, alth

Pros: Intuitive interface, easy to get started on and sound good, lot's of availble tweaks out there to get more bang for your buck.

Pretty Nice but still needs some work

Pros: I definately think that mixman is a good product and quite easy to use. Offers a lot of different controls that can spice up any mix. Also offers realtime effects. Some of these effects are kind of crappy though.

Cons: First of all, the scratchpads are very tricky to get used to. I rarely use them. It can be difficult to import your own samples and correctly match beats, also duribility is low. I think my crossfader is starting to go on mine, thinking about trying

DM2 Rocks tha House!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been interested in DJ-ing/producing for years, but I never had $7000 to spend on an MPC machine to start making beats with, or even $300 for a simple set of turntables. With this, I can do basically what I could do with both of the above, and for a fraction of the price! It's quite easy to use, too. After installation, my first beat came together within minutes, and in a few months I already had burned a few songs and made my first CD. I'm now in the process of trying to promote these beats through soundclick.com, and hoping that I might find someone who likes them, and is willing to sign me. And to think it all started in the electronics aisle at my local Wal-Mart...

DM2 UN BEATABLE MIXER FOREVER

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The DM2 is one of the BEST versitle machines i've seen anything compac for mixing on your on. I've resently started mixing, so for my DM2 is #1 for me but i want to know more details and need more track file. right now i am useing DM2 With KORG EA1 SYNTHESIZER.. I don't have to pick out that perfect little sample of my vinyl. I can simply download a sample and put it directly on the DM2. Plus, I can record directly through it without the aid of expensive recording equipment. I highly recomend the DM2, not only for beginers, but for experienced djs as well as to my brother give it a try, this will make your nightparty and club night life atleast 30% less stressful

TOYS R WHAT YOU MAKE OF M

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Hello, Im usually none vocal bout things... but to all you guys out who dont have the bux for expensive equipment please dont be discouraged by some of the negative responces about the DM2. This could be a powerful instrument if implemented correctly. The effects are a blast and the controll knob is pretty ingenious. The scratch wheels r cool also, but there is no volume control, so sometimes you have to go a little easy. The fader is weak but this ting is plastic,so what do you expect? As far as importing wav files it gets a little tricky, they dont loop properly and this is what usually makes ppl want to chuck the DM2 out. I have found that DM2 works best for me using recycle 1.7....meaning take a wav into recycle and export to a .trk file @ 8 bars, and you should have a perfect loop. wav if left alone and not treated will have a open space at the end and not loop properly (at least to my experience). Ive found you get can pretty experimental with DM2 just given some time. So if you dont have the dough or want to save this, "TOY" is great especially coupled with a laptop:)

FOR ALL PEOPLE COMPLAING

Pros:

Cons:

Review: O.K. First off this is directed towards all the people complaing about why the Dm2 doesn't play Mp3's. Well DUH....reality check...if it allowed people to mix MP3's there would be so much sueing going around the DM2 would be discontinued. Have you ever heard of copyright? I meen do you have no brain or something? Sure it would be nice if it could, but obviously it wouldn't work for long. The company would end up like Napster(or somewhere along the lines of that). Next.....E-mail support is terrible. I e-mailed them and the next day I got the dreaded "default" response which gives you FAQ's. Which usualy doesn't help anyone. And then I e-mailed the link that told me to use if the FAQ's didn't help. after that guess what happend? NOTHING! it's been seven days now and still no response. They need to drasticly improve their e-mail support. I would think it wouldn't take them long to answer it.

Pure fun for the beginner!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Hey, I'm gonna put this real simple...if your a beginner and really have no experience (yet) with some sophisticated units drum machines, and samplers (such as the Roland MC-307 for example), then get yourself one of these. For the price, you can't go wrong. I got mine for half price on ebay, just to play around with. I've done some samples and sound effects, including scratching (which I can't do with my Gemini CDJ 1200's) and burned them on CD for use at my gigs. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a "toy", but it's not meant for the professional (duh! the price alone should of told you that). Nevertheless, you can have alot of fun with it. If you use other audio software, the possibilities are endless. Afterwards, you can always graduate to something a bit more complex. The website is cool also, where you can download more samples. The only down side to that is you have to pay for each sample. I think they should of had a network where you could share samples with other owners. Other than that...it's all good.

Great for the money... pure fun

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I think this thing is great for the cash. It's not intended to be a professional recording studio defacto standard piece of eq. It's geared towards end users who are into music and want to take a stab at it... even audiophiles will probably keep this thing around for the fun factor and how easy it is to 'go with it' in the digital realm by throwing prepared samples on the pads and going with the flow and wherever the beat takes you--that's it's value. You people bashing the product for not being the professional's deam are need to look at the price tag and targeted market; I don't see any Indy car drivers taking pop shots at mass production consumer-mobiles... why are the so-called professionals posting comments here bashing on something obviously not marketed towards them. It's your own fault if you bought a less than $100 product and thought it would out do your xyz with qrx inputs and 123 features that you got for 2k. This is the sound of the worlds smallest violin.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been mixing since 1993 when I look at the DM2, it reminds me of an old dream that I used to have, if one day will we be able to have an instrument that combines the digital world and the analog. A mixer a turntable and music all in one, the answer could today be the dm2, but it could have been better if you also can play mp3 songs, or wav. in the mean time the md2 sounds like a sampler with a bit of effects to make it sound good, that could be played by curtain types of DJ’s, techno or jungle .. I strongly recommend the manufactures to come up with something that can serve all DJ’s not only, a type of DJ’s.

Cool, weak software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Very cool potential, but the weak software doesn't allow MP3 OR MIDI. They want you just to buy their tracks and play with them. Very vanilla. I want to use it for my own stuff, which it can do in a very limited way

It's nice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This thing is cool, you can customize it to anything you want, yea it may have tons of loops and samples already, but you can put your own, make your own, or even record your voice, and throw it into your mix. EVERYONE WITH MS Windows XP, USE THE COMPATABILITY WIZARD, AND IT WILL WORK IN XP!! And they thought they could limit you to Windows 98 or ME, XP's better for customization anyway.

More than anyone realises

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The DM2 is simply one of the most promising technologies to enter the market. It has problems, the software is instable, the hardware is not precise, and the effects are less than realtime. However, this is an extremely promising technology. The DM2 didn't really start to shine until, I started to play my tracked out songs. That's when the DM2's power and abilities show through. This will be the future. I sincerely doubt that those leaving bad reviews actually used the DM2 for their own tracks. Let alone do any live mixing with it. This thing is absolutely fantastic, but does need to grow. This will not replace all my DJ equipment, but rather it has become a welcome addition. The absolute mutt's nuts!

Pros:

DON'T BE FOOLED, THIS IS A TOY!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product looked like a nice addition to my setup, so I got it for 99$ on eBay. I'm glad I didn't pay more than that because after playing around for a few minutes, I quickly reached the end of this product. The fact that you can only load 16 samples at once is extremely limiting. The scatching is difficult to control, it doesn't feel or sound right. You can only load 3 effects at once. You have to stop your mix to load other effects or samples. Maybe those features come with Mixman Studio Pro? I don't know. If you're a musician looking for a good music software package try Propellerhead's Reason. It's more expensive but 1000 times more powerful.

Simple, affordable, and enjoyable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have to admit, for $100 you can't beat the product. There were problems earlier with support for the drivers, but luckily they didn't affect me. I really enjoy this, but it still seems too much like an expensive toy, merely for the fact that they make it NEARLY impossible to add your own beats or sounds without recording them from a cd player. I believe they should support mp3s in the next update, or at LEAST let you convert them to trk files. I might return the product because this disappointed me alone

The best in begining dj equipment.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The DM2 is one of the most versitle machines i've seen yet. It's about time that Dj equipment went all digital. I've been mixing for nearly 5 years and when I got my DM2, it became the heart of my setup. The only dissadvantage is that to obtain optimum performance at a show, I have to lug my computer around. But, that's what makes it so versatile. I don't have to pick out that perfect little sample of my vinyl. I can simply download a sample and put it directly on the DM2. Plus, I can record directly through it without the aid of expensive recording equipment. I highly recomend the DM2, not only for beginers, but for experienced djs as well.

Great Price / Poor Quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the best Digital Mixer for beginners. I strongly recommend this equipment to those of you that want to start mixing music, but don't know where to start. But like life, you get what you pay for. I think personally that the dm2 is fun and interactive in the way that you hook it up to the Pc. But it's nowhere near professional! I gets boring compared to the other equipment that I own at home. I suggest the Roland MC-307, if you are really into music mixing, and creating beats yourself. It's great for beginners that are serious about Dj-ing. But once you are professional, looking down on the dm2, looks like a kid's toy, like the Little Tikes 5 keys keyboard.

Shazam

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This has got to be one of the best PC perephrials out there. You can scratch like a pro and record and export your own songs. The only scratchable CD DJ equipment is over $1,200, and you can practically do the same on your comp for a little over $100. I personally plan on incdorperating this hardware with my own punk band, to create some crazy sounds. Awesome product! GET IT NOW!!!

Scratching is difficult

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The scratching on this machine leaves a fair bit to be desired. The sound being scratched will 'move around the ring' making it impossible to get it right everytime. With tape marks on the ring it is obvious that the sample is not staying in the same position. (perhaps they are emulating a needle skipping your vinyl tracks?? :( yeah, great...) I have had a fair bit of fun with this product however, and the build quality is good.

They promised Windows 2000 drivers

Pros:

Cons:

Review: They promised three weeks ago Windows 2000 drivers. They have the drivers they're not giving them to us. That's what kind of people they are. Greedy

Nice - An Excellent Tool

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used Mixman for years and have waited for an interface that was easier and more stable than the keyboard. The DM-2 allows me full control of my music, and when integrated with Mixman Studio Pro 4.5, it becomes even more versatile. I plan on using this for mixing at parties and small events - too bad it doesn't run on Windows 2000 though!

This is....well read on!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was so happy that this came out, mom and dad would never buy me my own 1200's because I couldn;t proove that I would actually stick with it. But They got me this, and they are amazed (I hope that I can get my turntables for x-mas) but we'll see. But they shure would go nicely with my DM2. You can make some super dope mixes with these things. And you can scratch any sample that you could ever want. Su-su-su-per c-c-c-oool!!! Peace out!!!

This is the coolest addition!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been spinning for years and years, and there has always been things that I wanted to do but couldn't because of the limitation of just turntables. Those days are gone, this is the best side kick item I have ever seen. Props Mixman...Big Props!!!

A must buy!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just bought the DM2 2 weeks ago, and all I've been doing is spending all of my time on the thing. It's incredibly fun, and can be an incredible time waster as I've found out. I think I can now compete with Orbital. Watch for me to open their concerts soon! I'll be a star!
