"Impressive and impactful"
Pros: Price point is great for being in the higher-end equipment category, great aesthetic, small form-factor, infinitely variable phase alignment option is crucial to good room/speaker calibration, depth beyond depth for size and price.
Cons: No acoustic calibration or remote.
Summary: I realize that most people do not want to spend more than $1,000 for a home theater sub, but for less than that you won't find a sub that has the impact of the SuperCube1. Competitors include the likes of REL which can exhibit better accuracy and musicality, but with a price point that is equal to or greater than the DT and will not have the ability to pressurize a room like the SC's. Offerings from Velodyne are typically a good way to go, but they are larger and in my opinion don?t excel in one particular area with exception to being feature-rich. I know this because I set out to get a REL and was easily convinced that the SC was the way to go for me as I already have powered subs in my tower speakers which provide a great deal of mid-high bass but lack in the sub 28hz range. This is where the SC comes through. Being able to adjust the phase to play nicely with my other 2 subs (took some tweaking and a helping hand) and the effortless low-end response was what clinched the purchase for me. That and the amount of excursion you get from the 1500 watt class D powered driver coupled with the infinite baffle/passive radiator design in a sealed enclosure meets my almost unrealistic demands when it comes to low end frequency response and flatness at this price range. With the infinitely variable phase alignment and proper room placement in relation to your seating position, you can get some impressive results from this relatively small sub. The reviews for this sub that are less than stellar most likely stem from improper phase alignment and acoustical limitations, maybe even impractical expectations in some cases. I have had this sub in three different homes now and it has acted as if it were 3 different subs with each change in the surrounding environment. One of which caused me to wonder if there was an issue with the amp or driver simply because of sub-optimal acoustic response from the dimensions of the room, though it still pressurized most of the house. My original purchase was the SC2 which uses an 8? driver and the frequency response would make you scratch your head in disbelief which really speaks to the design and execution of the SC line to get these results from an eight inch driver in a one foot cubed, sealed box, but I required a sub that could push a bit more air. The SC1 does just that. If your seating position is where your room's sweet spot lives, that will make all the difference in the end as it did for me. The bottom line here is if you?re looking to upgrade your existing sub or you want to add one to your HT/music room make sure you align your purchase with the requirements you have for form factor, aesthetic, frequency response, enclosure type, output, etc. If you want a full-range sub to match up with your Bose cube surrounds, then look elsewhere. If you want serious depth and pressurization, then give the SuperCube line, an offering from JL Audio?s home series or maybe the REL subs an audition and go from there.
