If you want to anchor your home theater and pull you into the movie, this is it for you. It truly delivers, at least in my experience, stomach pounding, gut churning, earth shattering, wall shaking, floor bouncing bass that you feel at movie theaters and concerts. Being able to feel it, not just hear it, is what I love about hardcore bass. I have owned one of these for about a year now, and I am so glad I got this one over others in its class. It gives my movies a true third dimension by actually making you feel like you are in it. I popped in Independence Day, fast forwarded to the "Time's Up" scene, turned it up, and my friends went "cool" and "awesome" and "sweet." The whole room was shaking, the dishes in the kitchen 2 room over were rattling too.
Movies is not only where it excels, music is more realistic too with this anchoring it. THIS BABY LOVES TO ROCK! ACDC, Van Halen, pretty much every heavy metal song I threw at it had me jumping around playing the air guitar and banging my head, but it also is willing to push forward accurately cellos, double basses, piano bass, and organs when paired with classical music. I found out the hard way not to have my record player anywhere near this monster, bass feedback through the feet of the player causes some really nasty results; I have never had this problem before.
On the back there are two control knobs for the crossover and the gain, as well as a 180 degree phase adjustment toggle. There are inputs for the LFE channel, or line level inputs. I kept my crossover and gain in the middle low end and up a little bit, respectfully, which to my ear is good for most applications. Some people will want to match this with their surround setup if they prefere more accurate representations of their music. I prefer my own sound setup, tamed mids and pronounced highs and lows.
I use this subwoofer with a pair of JBL L890 floor standers, a pair of L820 surrounds, a LC2 center, and a Yamaha RXV3900 receiver, and, without exaggerating, this sounds better than a movie theater in my opinion when playing high quality blurays with a good soundtrack. I also love to crank up the music and jam out when I can.
Oh yeah, the matte black finish is attractive, and the cone itself is a polymer coated paper cone that is very slightly yellow gold, looks mostly silver to many people. Fit and finish are superb.
The only complaints I have is that it is big and heavy...almost 60 pounds...nothing too bad since this will be sitting in one spot and not moved around much. Price is high too, I got this below recommended price, but if I had to pay full price, I would not regret it now after I have auditioned it.
