"Nice looking, fair sound" on by JohnE1000

Pros: Contemporary looking, small foot print

    Cons: sound quality, weak

Summary: After extensive search and reading people opinions, I bought the SKS-HT240. I tested the speakers using the Onkyo TX-SR502 receiver, and the Onkyo DV-CP702 universal player. Also, I tested 4-years old Onkyo wooden speakers (My old set). The room is about 300 sqft, hardwood floors, and 14 ft high cieling. My older speakers set outperformed the SKS-HT240 by miles. My old set was not expensive either; it came in an Onkyo HTB. Traditionally, good speakers cabinet are made of wood, no plastic and no aluminum. For modern look go for the SKS-HT240, and for sound quality go for good wooden set like the Onkyo SKS-HT520.

"Beats out HTiBs that cost 2 or 3 times more" on by MTowshar

Pros: Frequence Response of Satellites, Powerful sub, Solid 5.1 Stance

Cons: Finding the right speaker stands to match

Summary: Most HTiBs (home theater in a box) do one thing that's above average; make movie dialogue and sound effect sound great. However most HTiBs usually lack in the musical score and soundtrack department. First thing I noticed when researching HTiBs (besides the great editor review for the ONKYO SKS-HT240) was the frequency response of most. You'll find that many satellites rely SOLEY on the subwoofer for frequencies below 100hz. Not the SKS-HT240. The front speakers dip down into the 55hz range, and the centers and surrounds dip into the 65hz range. In addition, each satellite speaker is ported. What this means to the listener is a solid feel of base and direction. Believe me, I've sampled many HTiBs and the biggest problem was that the competion's subwoofers overpowered the satellites. Low frequency instruments and sounds overshadowed the mid-frequencies. Because the satellites have such a broad frequency range, it evenly captures every instrument in the musical score.

The subwoofer is very, and I mean VERY powerful. Those of you who like your bass kickin' really hard will be without dissappointment. As an example, my sub level is set to the equivalent of what would be a 2 out of a possible 10. I also have it raised 3 feet of the floor to be considerate of the neighbors below. At such a low level, the downward firing sub still packs enough of a punch to rattle the apartment. Plus, I have a configuration DVD that runs a very successful and near gapless low frequency sweep on the subwoofer. Bottom-line...solid, strong, consistent bass from the sub.

As with most HTiBs, the rear satellites sound detached from the forward 3 channels. The level of detachment is significantly lower than most, making for a thoroughly enjoyable sound from all channels.

My only problem was finding inexpensive speaker stand that match well. Sure you can fork over $300 - $400 for matching okyo speaker stands (which I finally caved in a bought for my fronts). Unfortunately the placement of the spring clips and speaker mount holes makes for the need of an odd or hard to find bracket.

I stand amazed at the level of performance this set functions at. I could have spent $1500 on any other HTiB and I still not reached the level of satisfaction I get from this set.

"Great for rooms of up to 400 Sq. Ft. as indicated in the review" on by ksaifullah

    Pros: Great sound and looks

Cons: None that I can think of

Summary: I have had this system matched up with a Yamaha HTR-5750 A/V reciever for the last three weeks and I have been extremely happy so far. I went with Yamaha receiver b/c I am partial to Yamaha sound. The speaker were bigger than I thought they would be, and the sound is fantastic for my apartment living room (14*10) in NYC. The best thing is the sleek and comtemporary look they have. I was in awe when I first opened them. They look great right next to my new Panasonic 50PHD7UY plasma TV. I downsized from Atlantic Technologies THX certified system albeit in a bigger room so I am somewhat familiar with good sound and these speakers are not light weight. If you are in an apartment or don't want to shake the neighbourhood and looking for contemporary looking speakers, than go for this system. Don't worry about the flimsy connectors as the review mentions. I was concerned about them but they turned out to be very sturdy.

    "Great look,sound,price" on

Pros: Looks - extruded aluminum housings match most of the silver tv's out there. Very high quality. Sound - I was worried about the amount of bass I would get in my large room out of a 150 watt 8" sub, but I ended up only turning it up 1/2 way. Music also so

Cons: The front speakers have bases, but are only two feet high. I am planning on ordering the Onkyo for about $150 so unless you are wall mounting or have a place to put them, plan on spending extra for stands. I would have liked removable grills.

    "Almost perfect" on by MadJoe

Pros: Sleek, Very Well Constructed, Great Sound

    Cons: Speaker wires (unavoidable, though)

Summary: They would have rated a perfect if they had only been wireless. But for the price, and the fact that wireless home theater is in it's infancy, they are, for all practicle purposes, perfect. Awesome sound reproduction, sleek looks match my other componants and TV, and very tough. They are pretty heavy, so finding generic speaker stands that won't break the bank and can handle them was a challenge. The custom stands you can order from Onkyo were just too expensive to justify getting them.

Shop around on the internet and you can get these for a bargain, too. Deffinitely worth your time to get these for your home theater.
