"Beats out HTiBs that cost 2 or 3 times more"
Pros: Frequence Response of Satellites, Powerful sub, Solid 5.1 Stance
Cons: Finding the right speaker stands to match
Summary: Most HTiBs (home theater in a box) do one thing that's above average; make movie dialogue and sound effect sound great. However most HTiBs usually lack in the musical score and soundtrack department. First thing I noticed when researching HTiBs (besides the great editor review for the ONKYO SKS-HT240) was the frequency response of most. You'll find that many satellites rely SOLEY on the subwoofer for frequencies below 100hz. Not the SKS-HT240. The front speakers dip down into the 55hz range, and the centers and surrounds dip into the 65hz range. In addition, each satellite speaker is ported. What this means to the listener is a solid feel of base and direction. Believe me, I've sampled many HTiBs and the biggest problem was that the competion's subwoofers overpowered the satellites. Low frequency instruments and sounds overshadowed the mid-frequencies. Because the satellites have such a broad frequency range, it evenly captures every instrument in the musical score.
The subwoofer is very, and I mean VERY powerful. Those of you who like your bass kickin' really hard will be without dissappointment. As an example, my sub level is set to the equivalent of what would be a 2 out of a possible 10. I also have it raised 3 feet of the floor to be considerate of the neighbors below. At such a low level, the downward firing sub still packs enough of a punch to rattle the apartment. Plus, I have a configuration DVD that runs a very successful and near gapless low frequency sweep on the subwoofer. Bottom-line...solid, strong, consistent bass from the sub.
As with most HTiBs, the rear satellites sound detached from the forward 3 channels. The level of detachment is significantly lower than most, making for a thoroughly enjoyable sound from all channels.
My only problem was finding inexpensive speaker stand that match well. Sure you can fork over $300 - $400 for matching okyo speaker stands (which I finally caved in a bought for my fronts). Unfortunately the placement of the spring clips and speaker mount holes makes for the need of an odd or hard to find bracket.
I stand amazed at the level of performance this set functions at. I could have spent $1500 on any other HTiB and I still not reached the level of satisfaction I get from this set.
