    "Good, but Northridge better"

    by drogen1 on December 3, 2005

Pros: Good subwoofer for the money

    Cons: not particularly efficient speakers

Summary: Indeed I bought the Onkyo HT-520, last year's model with three surround speakers not four as this years model. My first delima was the subwoofer, it sounded best on the left side of the room, opposite the cellos. I wouldn't have no part of that so I bought a JBL E 250 to make up the void. Now the Matrix really rumbles. Second delima was low volume listening. I wasn't catching everything that was being said late at night. Enter JBL E 35. " Oh that's what they said. ", I now said.
Now there's a scene where Trinity is extracting Neo's bug from his navel, there's horns tweeking away building up the tension of the scene, they just don't sound real with Onkyo's. Enter the E 50's...now that's more like a horn! So I decided to timbre match the whole set-up, and with the help of J&R's 'add to cart' Easter egg hunt got the remaining surrounds for under $200, two E 20's and two E 10's ( by the way, those E 10's can chug-out some bass, the voice of the ' Black Asteroid ' in the 5th Element will show you why )
As for build quality just look at the backs. Enough said.
The Internet has nothing but good things to say about this Onkyo HTiB, but conpared to the Grandfather of Theater Sound, well, the proof is in the putting them up against a true $1000 set-up and not just speculating in one's Monday morning quarterback's easy chair. You are not getting $1000 sound, sorry folks. But I will say the subwoofer holds it's own with the E 250. So $200+ makes it a steal. Just go to the THX website and see how many Onkyo speakers are certified. Quite a few, but I don't know where they are and how much they cost. It just shows Onkyo knows what they're doing. So I'll end in a positive note.

You realize you are comparing a speaker setup that costs a thousand dollars to one that costs 300 dollars??? If this speaker package sounded anywhere near as good as something you spend a grand to put together yourself I would feel bad for your choice of speakers. The beauty of this setup is the sound quality you get for the cost you spend. There is not a speaker package in it's price range that out performs it and that is what all the reviews say. No one says that something that costs 3 to 4 times as much is going to sound be beat by this package.
