"Great for movies, I already have a good sub to go with."
Pros: Spacious sound, and can handle quite high volume levels in movies. Tonal quality is good, with balanced midrange and clear highs, without harshness. Good dispersion. They sound fine with different seating positions.
Cons: They probably won't satisfy people who want to play loud rock or hip-hop music.
Summary: Recently we took the plunge and set up a home theater. I own an old M&K subwoofer (V2-B, 200 Watt) that I have been very happy with. I wanted to spend $500-$1000 on satellite-center channel speakers without a sub. I also wanted small speakers. I found that there don't appear to be many on the market that fit this description. Most have a subwoofer included or are much larger or more expensive.
I purchased these and placed left and right channel about 5 feet up and about 3 feet away from each side of my Sony 46 inch LCD. The center channel sits in front of the TV just below the screen, and the rear channel speakers are 4 feet feet behind the listening positions, and about 6 feet up on the wall (to project over the high back of the reclining couches).
The side mounted mid-ranges give the speakers the ability to fill the large room (a basement room approximately 16 x 27 feet) to a comfortably loud volume.
My opinion is that if one has a good sub (with sufficient power for the room size), and you intend the speakers for movies primarily, these speakers are a good choice. They aren't bad for jazz or classical listening as well. In addition to subwoofer, I power the Polks with a Yamaha RX-V663 receiver.
