The Bottom Line The Hummer H3 makes up for a lack of power and gadgets with serious off-road capability and a comfortable cabin. With the 2007 FJ Cruiser, Toyota scores with a styling statement that has the substance to back up its retrocool image. It offers on-road comfort and good space with serious off-road ability. At 17mpg, fuel economy is its weakness. The 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon was designed to be a great off-roader, with little compromise to make it practical for paved roads. Its navigation system should help out in the wilderness, but Bluetooth seems less useful in a car that you'll want to take beyond the range of cell towers. Although in serious need of a cabin tech update, the 2009 Range Rover Sport maintains its off-road prowess and general drivability. The 2006 Jeep Commander is a powerful and well-appointed upscale SUV. While its performance blows the doors off the competition over any terrain, a cramped interior and clunky cabin tech bring it down.
