The Bottom Line The 2006 Nissan Xterra's 4.0-liter V-6 engine has enough oomph to schlep through mud, gravel, and snow, but it doesn't handle city streets with much sophistication. Soccer moms and weekday commuters should look elsewhere for an all-purpose vehicle, as the Xterra's rough ride, dated interior, low gas mileage, and poor emissions ratings leave much to be desired. The 2006 Nissan Pathfinder is a solid performer that offers drivers and front passengers a plenitude of cabin comfort and technology without venturing in the realm of the luxurious. Rear passengers, however, will find the back seats a squeeze. With the 2007 FJ Cruiser, Toyota scores with a styling statement that has the substance to back up its retrocool image. It offers on-road comfort and good space with serious off-road ability. At 17mpg, fuel economy is its weakness. Even though pricey when fully loaded, the 2006 Nissan Murano offers a lot of nice and useful gadgets in an overall solid platform, although the lack of cell phone integration is a strange oversight. Although the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee's technical options look good on paper, they don't all work in a practical fashion. It's a very powerful car, but that comes at the expense of atrocious fuel economy.
