Pros Motor Trend SUV of the Year 2006, extremely capable
Cons City gas mileage, no rear window lift
Summary As a proud owner of a 2006 Xterra I have to say that when I came across this review I was quite shocked. Contrary to the review, this SUV does not ride rough on city streets and gas mileage although not the best is satisfactory given it's an SUV. Laura is right in that this truck is not for soccer moms or weekday commuters - but duh. I bought this truck to handle all-weather conditions in the mountains and it passed the test this past winter with flying colors. This SUV drives so solid and handles ice, slush, 1 foot of snow pack, rain and mud with ease. When this truck was only 2 months old I took it through the muddiest terrain you could imagine and it powered through like a tank. My washer fluid never froze up in sub zero temperatures - which was nice. Now that I've owned it for five months the few things i wish it had were temp guage inside of outside temp, rear window lift (so you don't have to lift the tailgate to access the rear compartment each time) and aux jack on the stereo - to make for easier satellite radio compatibility. For serious buyers, you will find out that this truck is in a class of it's own with regard to off-road capability and the price cannot be beat.
Pros great offroad performance, beefy powertrain, excellent storage for gear.
Cons No hybrid powertrain offered
Summary This vehicle should really be rated higher, as it was not designed with a tech geek in mind. This is why I believe the editors gave it such a low score, because they are tech geeks. The Xterra is made for people who do serious outdoor activities and don't care about techy frills and other useless items. They just want a solid vehicle that will get them there and back. That's what the Xterra does.
Pros Fair gas mileage, great quite ride and powerful engine
Cons Tow limit 5,000 lbs, stock stereo terrible
Summary I was a little surprised to read CNET's cons. After owning a 2006 Xterry I have been very impressed with both offroad and on road handling. Maybe I got a particularly good one but the ride is very quite and I average 22 mpg highway which, for a 265 hp SUV isn't too bad.
Pros Speed pickup,Room,Storage options
Cons Lack of Nav system, blue tooth, and other frills.
Summary Great suv for the money. I drove an Expedition for 8 years this suv is smaller with less frills but has great pick up and storage options when shopping. Great for pets like our big old english sheepdog dog. Easy clean up and room for them to ride along.
Pros Overall a good vehicle. Comfortable. Good looking
Cons Fuel Regulator sensor is faulty in 2006 models. Manufacturer knows about this problem. Refuses to do a safety recall. 2000-2004 models have been recalled for same problem.
Summary I have a 2006 Nissan Xterra. I had about 1/4 tank gas and decided to fill up. After filling up, my gauge read that I was on Empty. Its the fuel sensor and its going to be about $500 to fix. After researching online, looks like everyone has the same problem around the same time 36K miles.
