"Highlander Hybrid Mileage and Quality Disappointing"
Pros: Comfortable interior, well appointed, drives decently, good power
Cons: Mileage lower than expected, right front window bangs shut, leather seat in rear puffy
Summary: While I very much like the look and feel of the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, I am disappointed with the quality of the mfrs'workmanship. Specifically, the right front power window bangs when closing and the rear seat leather is puffy and saggy rather than tight. Perhaps my car was made on a Friday! Alternatively, one wonders whether Toyota's manufacturing volume may be causing some quality issues to surface.
Also disappointing is the gas mileage. While I have 2,400 miles on the car, I have never been able to get better than 26.3 mpg. More typically, it's 25.6 ... a far cry from 30 mpg expected.
My major motivations in paying over $40k for the car were two-fold: solid production quality and 30 mpg. Thus far, I'm disappointed on both. On top of this, one has to wait 3 months for a service appointment in the Honolulu area due to a local dealership monopoly. Ouch. Hope it gets better.

I bought my HiHy about 18 months ago. At the beginning, I was getting ~25-26mpg. I'm @ ~16K now (ride a bike 3-4 days a week) and I took a picture of my display showing 33mpg (although I've found reality to be 1-1.5 mpg lower). Winter mileage is ~10-15% lower due to winter fuel formulation, as well.
Also, running the heat in the winter will lower mpg since the engine is almost always running, but I like it cool, so I'm happy with just the seat warmers and the warm air flow with heater off. Still better than the Ford, as it has to run the engine for the AC & that I can't live without in the summer.
Remember, even a regular gas engine gets better mileage if you don't floor it & coast when possible.
