    "Great value for its class"

by Pibley on June 21, 2007

Pros: Great value for the money.

Cons: Interior color selection is very poor

Summary: Comparison shopped this vehicle against Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. In a sense, I think the Outlander has some of the power you'd want out of the RAV4 that the CR-V lacks and the interior appearance the CR-V has that the RAV4 lacks.

IMO RAV4 really has a dull interior compared to the sheer beauty of CR-Vs. CR-V only offers a 4 cyl so very limited on towing capacity.

So then there's the Outlander that seems to give you nearly the best of both these two models. Of particular interest, you get a lot of added features you'd end up paying a few more grand on toward either CR-V or RAV4. Not only that, Mitsubishi seems to be willing to negotiate on price whereas Honda and Toyota seem to hover right at or even above MSRP. Forget it.

It's not the absolute best in it's class but it's worth serious consideration. I'm very pleased with my purchase. Let's face it, there are a lot of good vehicles that the Outlander competes with in this class.

Just updating the review. I've put about 27k miles on the car now, mostly driving it to work and a bit of 4x4 on camping bivouacs. Only two issues to report:

1.Rattle, as if a screw were loose, on the right passenger side.
    2.Higher depreciation cost.

Anyhow, maintenance costs have been low and the car has held up well. I plan to drive it until it falls apart so the depreciation cost shouldn't be a problem. It just bothers me as my wife's Honda Odyssey continues to have high value even after 5 years of ownership.

I still recommend this as a good vehicle to buy.

Here in Canada, I bought a V-6 LS for less than an I-4 Rav 4 and for about the same as an underpowered Hyundai Tucson. There is no comparison between the 3 cars. The Outlander stands out in all departments, value, power, handling, comfort and, according to a Toyota mechanic aquaintance, reliability.
