The Bottom Line With the 2007 FJ Cruiser, Toyota scores with a styling statement that has the substance to back up its retrocool image. It offers on-road comfort and good space with serious off-road ability. At 17mpg, fuel economy is its weakness. The Hummer H3 makes up for a lack of power and gadgets with serious off-road capability and a comfortable cabin. The 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon was designed to be a great off-roader, with little compromise to make it practical for paved roads. Its navigation system should help out in the wilderness, but Bluetooth seems less useful in a car that you'll want to take beyond the range of cell towers. The 2008 Toyota 4Runner works as a solid and rugged SUV, but the attempt to tech it up with an integrated portable navigation device is a kludge. The idea isn't bad, though, and we would like to see the next version of this system. The 2006 Nissan Pathfinder is a solid performer that offers drivers and front passengers a plenitude of cabin comfort and technology without venturing in the realm of the luxurious. Rear passengers, however, will find the back seats a squeeze.
