as all mentioned it's a bad internal cord connection

Pros: it was suppose to be a rough and tough unit. it's built tough from the outside, but the weakest link is the cord inside.

Cons: the unit has been used less than 6 times and then it stopped powering up.

Review: calling hitiachi is a waste. they will take it back under warranty, but you have a pay a third party to recover your data. they will give you a rebuilt unit in return. so instead of paying again for my data, i took it apart and i discovered that the internal cord restraint clamp was overtightened and pinched the wires causing a short. the design looks solid inside, but the quality control and aluminum cord restraint is an issue they should be aware of.

i didn't even look on line for a fix, but now that i have, i see i'm not the only one with the same cord issues.

hitachi should repair or replace our units and reinstall the hard drive so we don't have to pay for our own data recovery. they claim if we open it, we bought it. i claim if they built a reliable product, we wouldn't have to open it to get our data recovered.

Tough hard drive with integrated usb cable

Pros: Tough, reliable for me, feels safe keeping my data in it. Do not have to be bringing cables or worry that the port will be broke if have to pack it in a rush with the cable attached to it.

Cons: Big compared to my Seagate Free-Agent but the reliability outweights the size.

Review: Had worked fine for me, not having to carry cables and the confidence that it will still be working if I drop it.

Indeed, there should be a recall. Chame on

Pros: Idea and concept is great, but that is about it.

Cons: Cable is of very poor quality and stops working at the most inconvenient time. It is really a shame for Hitachi to put its famous brand on a something that would have been a great product had then spent the money on a decent cable

Review: They say that a boat gives you two happy moments: the day you buy one and the day you sell it. This one only gave me the first one. I certainly cannot sell it and I am not sure what would be the solution from them once I am able to reach their tech support. A real shame.

Possible Fix

Pros: ----------

Cons: ----------

Review: OK if there is someone whose USB cable works and the thing connects to the PC but can't open the SimpleTough try this -
Go to Start>Run. When the window opens type explorer in the text box. The explorer should open in My Documents. Then in the left find My Computer and press the plus on the left of it. Then find the SimpleTough drive and double click on it. It should work. It worked for me.

Great Warranty For When It Crashes

Pros: Sturdy cover. Mine was a replacement for another Hitachi that crashed. They replaced my 10 month old unit in about 3 weeks. Customer service was decent. We exchanged 3 emails before they agreed it was not salvageable.

Cons: They required special packaging to return the product but it was replaced quickly. Once your claim is registered, you have 45 days to return the defective device. Very slow processing data.

Review: Why would you replace a drive, that crashed after 10 months, with another drive from the same people? I spent 35 of my 45 days asking myself why should I spend $15 to return the old drive? I would be much more upset if my data wasn't backed up. i would have lost about 200 gig from my unrecoverable drive.

The cable on the old drive was poorly fitted and always felt unstable. I bought a replacement from another manufacturer. It works much better. If you read these reviews and still buy the drive, good luck and save the original package, you'll need it!

A PIECE OF DIGITAL GARBAGE!

Pros: IT WORKED!

Cons: IT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE! AFTER A LITTLE MORE THAN 4 WEEKS THIS PIECE OF **** FAILED ME! IT IS THE DAMN CABLE!

Review: DON'T
BUY
THIS!
I wont even bother sending it to support. I'll just buy a empty case and put the HD on it. Open this sardine can by ripping the side rubber thingies and removing the 4 screws ( one was already used and was hahrd to remove, I can't fathom why was used in a new product...). rip the HD from it's disgusting guts and pop it in a new case. Use the old case as fuel for cold days.

An absolutely terrible product from Hitachi

Pros: Still to figure out

Cons: Everything. The drive actually died on day 2.

Review: I got one of these to supplement the hard drive on my computer, thinking that a product from a name like Hitachi will be reliable. But to my utter disappointment, the drive died on day 2, taking my data with it to the grave. I still have to see if the warranty will get my drive replaced, but the data is undoubtedly GONE forever. Do not buy this product unless you have extra money to waste (in which case, the better idea will be to donate that money to charity or to me, I need to buy a new drive anyway).

I can not recommend this product, even to my enemies.

Pros: The only advantages of this product are soon erased by its failure.

Cons: I had exactly the same results as the other folks who plunked down cold hard cash. It works for a short period of time, and then the built-in USB cable fails. Honestly, if you have one that still works, salvage the data now while you still can.

Review: Bottom-line is that my experience with this product was not even close to its marketing hype. I was able to use it for about a month before the cable failed. It lasted just long enough for me to feel like I could trust it. Fortunately everything on it is backed up, but that really isn't the point, is it?

In the future I won't ever be buying any drives with a fixed cable.

Works great, but only for a month.

Pros: First month.

Cons: Second month.

Review: I have had 2 drives that did the same thing. Works for a month, then the computer will not see the drive. All data on drive is gone.

Warranty is Useless

Pros: Cute & USB connector is attached

Cons: Device failed in two days. Cannot get data removed or device destroyed to protect against identity theft.

Review: Bought this two days ago and backed up a great deal of confidential information that I wanted to store in a safety deposit box. Device started failing when I reconnected yesterday.. Now it has failed completely. Problem is I don't want to turn this in for a replacement/refund unless I can be sure all the data is removed or the unit is destroyed. Costco (by phone) says they can't help. Hitachi says Costco handles the problem for the first 30 days. I understand I got a defective unit, but I am NOT comfortable handing over a device that someone at Hitachi (where Costco says they send the unit to) would not open this up and recover the data. Anyone have any suggestions to prevent Identity Theft...

This is a defective product that should be recalled.

Pros: If it had held up it would have been a good portable drive . . .

Cons: The USB cable attached permanately to the drive fails after a short time!!!

Review: Recall this product! It can cause huge problems for users.

The drive cable power became intermittent.

Pros: Small drive. Overall, felt rugged.

Cons: The supplied USB cable is too short and permanently attached at one end to the drive, making it difficult to support the drive when it is attached to a USB port on a typical desktop computer. Cable power became intermittent after minimal use.

Review: The drive was to be used to interchange data between a laptop and desktop computer (in different locations). The drive worked OK for a few days. Then the drive power became intermittent. It turned out that the cable could not be straightened beyound a certain point or power to the drive would be lost. I was able to read the data stored on the drive by proping the drive in such a position so as to keep the cable curled close to the drive. Fortunately, COSTCO took the drive back. I will no linger buy a drive unless it uses a standard removable USB cable.
