Pros Quick, Quiet and Easy To Install
Cons Make sure your drive is properly partitioned
Summary This drive is the third Maxtor drive that I had purchased since 1992. All of the drives that I had I replaced because they were too small for me. I've never had a Maxtor die on me. If there are any drives that I had bad luck with, it was Western Digitals.
Regarding this drive, I find that it is very quiet, very quick and easy to install. The only real problem, and that is not related to this drive specifically, but for any drive that is over 137 GB, is that it must be properly partitioned in order to get the maximum amount of storage. Any partitioning software should do the trick, as the maximum a Hard Drive can be partitioned to under Windows is 137 GB or so.
After purchasing this Hard Drive, there are a few things you must do if you want it to last a long time. You must keep it cool. A good Hard Drive fan and a good case fan will make sure of that. Another idea would be is that if you are not using your computer, you must use the hibernation feature with your computer.
Pros Doesnt take up much space.
Cons Everything else!
Summary I wanted an external hard drive to back up my computer and critical business info, so, I bought 1 for me, 1 for my asst, and then a 3rd that I'd back up the 1st 2, and move it off site, just in case. 1 drive just stopped working after about 6 weeks. Both Maxtor and Office Max were ZERO help, and, since data on drive was protected by Privacy laws, etc, I couldnt send it to them to retreive data. They offered no other alternative, and never resonded to my questions. About 9 weeks after the 1st drive failed, 2nd one failed, and I again got very little assistance or help from both the manufacturer and the store. 3rd drive failed last week, and again, Office Max response was anemic at best, but, I'd say embarrassing , and Maxtor's response was like I was taking the guy away from his afternoon nap.
STAY AWAY, if the data you put on the HD is something yu might need in the future.
Pros Large capacity and cheap.
Cons Died after 60 days of use, slow performance.
Summary When I installed BF2 on this drive, loading times went way up from when it was installed on my master drive. Then, after 60 days of use, the drive died.
"It ran OK for 10 days and then suddenly quit working completely (will not even spin up)."on by frankm
Pros It failed too soon to determine a "Pro".
Cons Only ran for avout 10 days and then suddenly quit working completely (will not even spin up).
Summary I bought this drive about 18 months ago but did not install till about 10 days ago. It ran fine for 10 days and then suddenly quit working completely (will not even spin up). I suspect that Maxtor has put the date manufactured info in the drive and and the drive compares it to the current date to cause a "failure" just beyond the 1 year warranty. I will not buy another Maxtor since failure just beyond warranty coverage has happened to me with this vendor more than once. Seagate still has a 5 year warranty and is what I will buy from now on.
Pros Rock solid from 133 host adapter
Cons Are you kidding. . .there are no cons.
