"A product that works as advertised" on by desmodromico916
Pros: Complete, detailed instructions; all my files made it and all applications worked without requiring re-installation
Cons: The process might be a bit technical for some folks, but if your reading comprehension is good and pay attention to detail it will go well.
Summary: I decided to give Upgrade Assistant a try as much for my benefit as others I know who are using XP and would like to try Windows 7. I took care to clone my drive first in case things went wrong...needn't have bothered. The migration went flawlessly. I'd suggest if you download Upgrade Assistant, copy it to a USB drive so you have it available to reload once Windows 7 installation is complete (it is installed on both the XP and Win7 operating systems).

"With one undocumented problem, it worked." on by SFolinsky
Pros: With one exception, it worked well and seamlessly as per the instructions.
Cons: The documentation did not disclose that ThunderBird data has to be backed up separately via a program such as MozBackup.
Summary: Once installed, ThunderBird had to be reinstalled but would not access former profile and data. A backup image of the Win7 installation was made, the old XP image restored, MozBackup created on thumb-drife, Win7 image restored -- and MozBackup then restored. It has worked perfectly since.

"Alternative" on by Appmen
Pros: It mostly works
Cons: It does not support unlimited number of applications
Summary: You may consider to use WET (windows easy transfer) and PickMeApp: two free solutions to migrate from XP to Windows 7. WET may transfer your XP program settings to Win 7 while portable PickMeApp tool may transfer programs from XP to Windows 7. PickMeApp claims to support unlimited number of programs.

"Upgrade without problems!" on by Graham_Sandak
Pros: Wizard-style UI that caters to regular folks just like me; moves programs, files and settings; lost of options to customise the move.
Cons: Tries to install some browser toolbar.
Summary: I was actually recommended by a colleague to use PCmover to upgrade to Windows 7. He said it worked like a charm. It seemed like a daunting task to me ? I didn?t even know where to begin ? so I appreciated any recommendations. So I got the product and installed it. It takes you through a wizard that basically tells you to set up your old computer first. Once that is done, you set up the Windows 7 machine and let PCmover work its magic. It does seem like they have a whole lot of screens for the wizard, but I actually appreciated the hand-holding since I really didn?t know much about computers. Anyway, the move took quite some time, but it completed without a hitch. You just have to restart the new computer and that?s it! So far everything seems to work for me. What I really didn?t appreciate though is the hawking of some browser toolbar. But the moving process itself was great.
