Pros Does what it's supposed to reliably
Cons You can break things so some sense is required
Summary I've been using RM 5.1 for years and have found it effective in both XP Home, Pro and Vista (32 bit Home Premium). Have used on four maybe five different PCs and only had a problem once.
... and I'm pretty sure that time it was my fault (I had installed something then installed an upgrade and didn't reboot). RM broke a file extention association to one my applications. This was easy to roll back, then I just ran the fix with that item disabled.
I've never been able to repeat that one problem.
But, honestly, it's quite unwise to do anything to your registry w/o backing up first. It's hardly RM's fault if you do something irreversible and didn't back up first. Not all applications follow the standards so once in a while, something will break.
That said, in using the product hundreds of times, I've only seen it mess up once.

"Not for Vista"on by bugler2
Pros Does well on XP machines
Cons Hangs on Vista
Summary I own Registry Mechanic 7.0 and it runs fine on XP machines, finds and fixes problems very quickly. However, I tried it on my new laptop, which came with vista and Mechanic just hangs in its scan. This despite the fact that Mechanic's website indicates it supports Vista.
Pros Acutally detects and fixes registry problems. Easy to use.
Cons There are other programs out there that work better.
Summary This program was quickly installed into my computer. Once there, it found and fixed over 500 faults with my registry. My computer runs noticebly faster now. Although I'm sure there is software that is a)cheaper or free to use or b) can detect more things/has more features, this one is simole to use and not too expensive. Not a bad eal if you run into it.
Pros Found every obvious problem, as well as ones i didn't notice.
Cons From what i've heard, it doesn't work on Vista. As i'm getting a new Laptop soon, this will be a problem.
Summary If you have an XP, 2000, or any other than Vista, this is a great program. And, it's affordable!
