"Cost effective tablet PC"
Pros: Screen presentation, Battery life
Cons: Weight, durability
Summary: Purchased in Aug'06 (CompUSA $1299) for 13 y/o daughter for school (teachers use WiFi "white boards" for class presentations). Thus far we have suffered cooling fan and power cord failures. The machine initially suffered a number of software "siezures" which have been treated by family friend (Network Engineer - removed a lot of extraneous software junk packed on new PC's)and by factory service (cooling fan replacement). The machine now runs well in the service of a exuberant teenager, shutting around campus, on the bus, and at home. It seems to weigh a ton, but since several of her text books are on the hard drive (which is spacious)...the weight is tolerable tradeoff in the padded backpack she lugs around.Updated
In reference to the Toshiba customer service experience back in Feb '07. This was initially excellent with regard to initial phone conversation, UPS shipping, and initial diagnosis. Repairs were delayed a couple of days in Louisville due to parts. Toshiba's relationship with UPS (also hubbed in Louisville) is the real bright spot here...time lost by Toshiba for parts appeared to have been made up by express delivery by UPS...all coordinated and paid for by Toshiba. All I did was drop the machine off at my nearby UPS store with my repair auth # and Toshiba/UPS account #...we had the machine back 8 days later. Not bad...not bad at all! Thanks Toshiba and UPS.
