Summary Conclusion Archos 101 G9 Turbo, 1GB RAM, 8GB disk, Android 4:
Probably the best non-windows tablet on the market today, a full featured product not matched by any other non-windows tablet.
The features, and the decisions made by the manufacturer, divides the limited gadget toys from the useable devices. Most important probably the support for playing flash videos and the 16:10 aspect ratio.
Archos made all the right decisions.
The user review:
Unpacking, I was surprised about the very nice build quality and solid construction, having read various reviews, I wonder if we have the same device.
Screen is non-glass, and case is made in flexible materials - protecting the screen and the unit if dropped, which may save you for buying a new or for several expensive front-glass replacements during its life time. This is a correct choice above a stiff metal case with glass screen.
The unit is very responsive and with smooth experience. First thing was to set WiFi to static IP and set the two DNS to the "Overplay" server. Next step was to visit the Google markets and download Adobe Flash 11. Visiting my favorite TV broadcasting site, all flash broadcast were played as on my notebook, also the HD material. The units size of 16:10 and not 4:3 is quickly appreciated when the movie fills the full screen - a wise decision of Archos.
The kick stand quickly has become a key feature, almost indispensable, and very useful when watching a movie, or during Skype calls. With a little practice the unit can be operated while on kickstand. These three features alone distinguish the device from the rest of the tablets - and in my opinion classifies iPad ao as limited and expensive gadgets.
So far I will not need a 3G connection, but nice to have the 3G upgrade feature, Murphys laws are still in force.
After downloading the Flash 11 player, Skype app and a few more, I thank Archos for providing a stock Android ICS and Google stock apps. Very useful with Google Maps and the GPS.
No need to go further into standard features, all work very nicely, my wife will get one soon, probably the version with 250GB HDD for her movies etc, to have one in house with disk capacity when we travel.
Having made a vast research before the choice, I think there is no non-windows tablet which can match this tablet in terms of performance, features and useability - not even not if considering price tags. The price of 252 euro is a bargain.
The development within tablets goes blitz fast, what is hot today is not next year - it is almost a waste of money to pay big time, when the product is out dated next year - better pay half the price, and buy a new one next year, passing this one to the kids.
Personally I wouldnt know what to use an iPad or similiar limited tablet for - they are in my opinion gadgets. Key must be to be able to do what you want and be unlimited, not having experiencing "ups, cant do that". But if consider a tablet as a mean of making a statement, money no issue,, with low priority of useability, an iPad may be just the right for you.
I give it 5 starts. If compared with the 5 stars of iPad, it should have 7 stars as to be a full featured and useable product, compared with the very limited and wrong-sized iPad.
