In April, Intel unveiled its next-generation XScale processors for mobile products, and now, the first Windows Mobile 2003 OS-based handhelds to employ them have finally surfaced: the Dell Axim X30 series. Replacing the Axim X3i, the high-end X30 adds Intel's zippy new 624MHz processor, Bluetooth, and the latest Windows Mobile OS--setting a new standard for Pocket PCs. The X30 is an office workhorse, but its competitive price point ($350) may attract consumers who want a full-featured PDA. If you don't need the speed, check out the midlevel X30, which has the same features as this version except for a 312MHz processor. Those on a budget should check out the base model, which forfeits wireless connectivity and extra memory for a low price tag ($199). The Dell Axim X30 didn't get much of a face-lift: it retains the same silver casing and rather plain look of its predecessor. But whether or not you're concerned with looks, you'll definitely appreciate its compact size and light weight. At 4.7 ounces and 4.6 by 3 by 0.6 inches, the X30 is only a hair bigger than the X3i and the HP iPaq H4150, a remarkable trait when you consider all the features packed in this PDA. Additionally, it sits well in the palm of your hand and feels sturdy enough to endure numerous trips from your bag to your car to your desk.

No extreme makeover here; the X30 retains the same look as the X3.
A view from the top reveals the IR port, the expansion slot, and the wireless antenna.

The screen is a standard 3.5-inch TFT display with 65,536 colors and a 240x320-pixel resolution. Just below it are the five-way navigational keypad and the four traditional shortcut keys to your calendar, your contacts, your in-box, and your home page, all of which are user programmable. As a bonus, you'll find two labeled buttons on the outside of the shortcut keys; one controls the voice-record function, while the other enables and disables Wi-Fi. The latter is particularly handy, as it lets you access the Web with one click rather than having to navigate multiple menus. Turn the device over, and you'll find a speaker and the user-replaceable 950mAh battery. To disengage the cell from the handheld, you have to hold the unlock key while taking out the battery--but at least it's removable.

Lining the X30's left side are a standard headphone jack and a jog wheel that allows you to scroll through menu items and to easily navigate with one hand. These features cause that side to protrude slightly--not a major inconvenience but a bit of an eyesore. The right side houses the flat stylus, which never felt comfortable in our hands; we prefer the traditional round form.

Power play: The desktop cradle includes a slot for a second battery.

Sitting on top of the device are an IR port, an SDIO/MMC expansion slot, and an antenna nub for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The antenna glows green when Wi-Fi is on and blue for Bluetooth, but it adds a bit of bulk to the device. By comparison, many models with the wireless combo, such as the HP iPaq H4150 and the Toshiba e805, have the wireless radio seamlessly built in. Fortunately, Dell throws in a nice, soft protective case (with belt clip) that covers the antenna and allows for easy transport. Other extras in the box include a slick USB synchronization cradle with an extra slot for a second battery, an AC adapter, and a power cord. Arguably, the most noteworthy improvement to the Axim X30 is the next-generation Intel processor. As the flagship of the new Axim line, this model boasts the top-of-the-line 624MHz XScale PXA270 processor. Not only does this mean a faster engine speed, the new chip also features a combination of SpeedStep technology (originally found in Intel's chip for notebooks), which dynamically adjusts power according to the application, and Wireless MMX technology (for multimedia performance), both of which extend battery life (see the Performance section). Even with the energy-saving processor, Dell includes an internal backup battery so that you don't suffer any data loss if it runs out of juice. A high-capacity 1,800mAh battery is also available for $99.

Also onboard is a healthy 64MB of RAM, but with the Axim's ability to play videos and audio files, you'll want to invest in a storage card to hold these memory-intensive files.

Memory is a terrible thing to waste. Carry your files on MMC media.

Improving upon its predecessor, the X30 now includes Bluetooth capabilities so that you can connect to other Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as a cell phone or a printer. And the Axim lets you use both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi simultaneously, unlike the Asus MyPal A716, which can handle only one wireless function at a time. Thus, for example, you can use Wi-Fi to access your e-mail account, then print a message to a Bluetooth printer. Dell will also offer Bluetooth accessories (a GPS navigation system and a keyboard) for purchase in mid-to-late June, though pricing has not been determined yet.

As noted, connecting to the Web is simple with the X30's single-touch access, and once online, you'll find more useful tools through Dell's WLAN Utility app. It displays signal strength and encryption (if any), and it lets you perform more-sophisticated functions, such as using a site monitor to search and track access points in range and engage in certificate enrollment for advanced Wi-Fi authentication.

The Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition (SE) enhances the experience with its Wi-Fi-protected access feature and landscape-view support, which offers a bigger viewing screen. You'll also find the staple Pocket versions of Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player 9.0, and more. Unfortunately, there isn't much else besides a backup utility, a program launcher, games (Solitaire and Jawbreaker), and trial software, such as McAfee VirusScan PDA and Cash Organizer 2003.
We had a lot of expectations for the Dell Axim X30, and we weren't disappointed by its performance. Sporting an Intel PXA270 624MHz processor and Windows Mobile 2003 SE, the X30 was decidedly the fastest Pocket PC we've seen to date. Its test scores were, on average, about 35 percent quicker than those of the Toshiba e805, our current chart topper. With the X30, all applications responded instantly, even when multiple apps were running and the PDA was in PowerSave mode (where the processor runs at only 208MHz).

The X30 also offers striking video performance. Even though the screen doesn't have the highest resolution, it's bright, and video clips and games looked great. Images were crisp, and action shots were only slightly pixelated. The TFT display was also easy to read in sunlight.

The Dell Axim X30's battery life was also impressive. In CNET Labs' drain test, where we let the device repeatedly play a video clip with the wireless radio turned off and the backlight set at High, the battery lasted up to 4 hours, 30 minutes. In our anecdotal test, which replicated normal, real-world use, the battery life was about 14 hours.

The X30's built-in wireless connections, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, also performed well, offering a great range and a strong signal. Web pages loaded quickly, and it took mere seconds for the device to find to a wireless network. The included Wi-Fi utility has loads of connectivity options. Again, unlike other Pocket PCs, the X30 allows you to have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on at the same time, and there were no access problems when both functions were operating.

A bit dated, but works well.

Pros: Extra capacity battery worth the investment. Mobipocket ebook reader is excellent, especially in full screen view.

Cons: Syncing problems with calendar.

Review: All in all, much more satisfied than with my old Palm Tungsten.

Solid Performer

Pros: Durability, WiFi, Bluetooth, Speed

Cons: Bulkiness, Stylus, Speaker

Review: I've had the Dell Axim X30 for about two years now, and it's held up REALLY well despite being toted around excessively, and dropped a couple of times too. Where my old Palm Pilot had scratches all over the screen at this point, the Axe looks great. The housing is a bit scuffed up though.. it's not much more than plastic. I use the WiFi extensively, and it connects well with my DLink router, as well as any APs in the area. Recently, I've been using it as an uncool version of a Video IPod to collect and playback audio and video podcasts - the processor chokes on SOME MV4 files, but most are pretty smooth sailing.

All in all - it's been a great ride so far.

Slower than expected. Freezing and Crashing

Pros: Lightweight, good set-up, customization

Cons: Poor battery life, system crashes, slow performance

Review: I am now on my 3rd Axim x30 and since they don't make them anymore Dell keeps giving me refurbished units. I find that performance is very sluggish when reading off of the SD Card, and considering that you can't really install any big programs to the main unit (since memory is so limited) you have to deal with the slow loading program speed. Even when wireless and bluetooth are turned off, and the screen is turned down to 1/2 brightness, I still find that the unit is a battery hog. I have replaced the battery once thinking maybe that was my problem but it usually only lasts the day, at the most. I have certain programs that sometimes load fine and sometimes don't load at all and have to end up using the system reset button in the back, quite often because of a freeze. I am using this mainly for medical practice and have found that it just isn't fast enough. I used one of my associates Palm treo 650 and the same programs on that unit load so much faster. I wish Windows had the speed of Palm, but they don't. Granted Windows looks better, and has more versatility than Palm... you just have to wait longer. I am giving up on this thing, and trying a UTStarcom 6700 w/ Windows Mobile 5.0. If that doesn't go well, I'm going to the Palm Treo, even though technology wise its not up to par with Windows. It is much faster, and speed is what I need.

Brilliantly done!

Pros: Great size, clear screen, lightning fast processor

Cons: Little on the expensive side

Review: I still can't believe how well this works. I've had it for a little over a year now, and it's been absolutely flawless.

Didn't test too much of the competition other than the HP equivalent, but this was just so much better.

by far the most impressive pda i've used so far!

Pros: vibrant dispaly, fast processor, universally connected

Cons: while playing or using for a prolonged period of time the back side tneds to be extremly hot!

Review: i have used numerous PDA's during my time from the M series of palm to HP's and Asus. and this unit is by far (hands down) the most impressive that i have used.

the only down side is that you will need to use a mitten to be able withstand the heat generated by the battery or the processor.

but a slap of an aluminum or leather casing will solve the problem.

the unit is quite light and the display is very vibrant compared to Asus A620's. and it does not hang wile multitasking or viewing pictures which will require you soft reset.

but overall very reliable product and all you need gadget in one carrying. shame that it does not come with a bottle and can opener or you will have a complete survival tool for urban living!

Cheap handheld, in both cost and quality

Pros: 624 MHz processor (!), bluetooth, wireless, Windows interface

Cons: Slow, screen gets scratched and damaged extremely easily, some difficulty connecting bluetooth to certain devices

Review: Cannot connect my cellphone to handheld (onle phone to handheld, not handheld to phone). Can sync with my bluetooth laptop wirelessly which is awesome (I can do it from across the room). Very speedy. I definately recommend adding a GPS navigation system (bluetooth only of course). Only problem is it had to be replaced 8 times because hte screen kept breaking (like just going black for no reason). Once it wouldnt shut off and drained the battery without me knowing. Other than that (Dell always replaced immediately, no questions) a great product.

NOTE: as with ALL Dell products, I HIGHLY recommend extending the warantee, things just go more smoothly when the products break (your fault or dells')

Unstable OS, short battery life

Pros: built in wifi

Cons: constant resetting required, short battery life

Review: Despite it's attractive price and seemingly excellent features, the X30 is a real pain in the neck. Connecting via wifi is ridiculously difficult; connection via bluetooth seemingly impossible. The system frequently requires a soft reset, and it must be charged after a typical and relatively short session. Part of the problems is Microsoft's operating system. A bargain is no bargain if performance is unsatisfactory.

Great PDA, great value

Pros: Speed, size

Cons: Screen brightness, build quality good but not great

Review: I have owned this PDA for 1 year and am very saisfied. The speed is great, the small size is a definite plus (fits in my pants pocket), and the wireless features work well. I wouldn't mind improved build quality like it's newer sybling the Axim x50 but this one is no slouch. I paid $314 for what was the fastest PDA on market, not too bad in my opinion.

Great PDA! Super bang for the buck!

Pros: Fast, bright screen, lots of ways to customize, WiFi

Cons: A pain if you're switching from a Palm

Review: I bought this device refurbished to replace a Palm Pilot and was a little skeptical of Windows Mobile. After trying it out, I love it. It's super fast and has a ton of useful features. It synchronizes to Outlook to take advantage of a calender, schedule, and email in one program.

You can download tons of free themes online to customize it, and the great screen alows you to add your own pictures. The horizontal view option is also great for slideshows and mpgs.

My only gripe is that it's a pain to transfer contacts and schedules from Palm Desktop. Once you manage to create all the VCards for contacts and manually transfer your calendar, the contacts still often lose some information. There also aren't as many freeware applications for Windows Mobile as for Palm OS.

A no-brainer (for the money)

Pros: Good performance, light-weight, bright screen

Cons: Poor audio, bland looks

Review: I've been using mine for 2 months. During that time, it froze up only once, and I had four apps running. Very stable.

I use my Motorola V710 as a Bluetooth dial-up modem for the Axim, and I'm very happy with the speed I'm getting. It also comes with the Oddessy WiFi manager, which is nice.

I just wish the audio quality were better. The speaker sounds pretty bad, and the headphone output amplifier is pretty thin. I was going to use the Axim as a MP3 player for the car using a cassette adapter, but I find myself still using my Rio because it sounds much better. I also use the Axim as a metronome, but the speaker volume is almost always insufficient. Still, most people will consider this a fair tradeoff for the price.

Another tradeoff MIGHT be the aesthetics. I actually like the simple, understated design, but there are people that don't. (Personally, I don't know how people continue to buy those horrible looking HPs!) The X30 is pretty slick, but it's also a bit boxy.

Overall, unless you absolutely need a true VGA screen, I'd recommend the Axim X30 to anyone, especially if this is your first PDA device.

Business and fun together at last

Pros: Pretty thin and slick - Very nice display

Cons: Takes a while for it to let you put your password in when you turn it on

Review: I switched from Palm to Pocket PC. I'm very happy with this Pocket PC. I had some difficulty setting up the bluetooth with ActiveSync on my laptop. I got that figured out so it works very nicely now. It's easy to sync with my desktop on the cradle and with my laptop via bluetooth. AIM is free now for Pocket PC's so you can take your Pocket PC to any place with free Wifi and chat with your buddies.

My only complaint is that it takes a while before you can enter your password when you turn it on. There seems to be a boot-up sequence that has to take place before you can really do anything. Not bad though, it takes about 4-5 seconds... although 4-5 seconds can be a lot when you're trying to quickly jot down directions or a phone number.

Great Pocket PC!

Pros: -Extremely fast processor -Latest Windows Mobile OS -Brilliant screen -Handles intense graphics, videos and games well -Wifi and Bluetooth - Awesome cradle -Scroll dial is very helpful

Cons: There are absoulutely none!

Review: The Dell Axim X30 is the best PDA I've ever used, and it is offered at an extraordinary price! Applications open instantly even when there are a lot of programs already running. The high and mid-level versions come with a sleek, metallic cradle with an optional travel cable. The stylus is also sleek, and is extremely comfortable(in my opion). The design may be basic, but this Pocket PC is packed with a ton of great features!

Nice product

Pros: Nice product; substantial functionality/readability

Cons: occassional lockups, expensive optional keyboard

Review: Very nice product; Id recommend it for anyone interested in having a lot of functionality in a small package. I wish it had more ROM capability and more software was available to mesh w/ the operating system. Bluetooth always comes on when linking to wifi sources. Blinking light is sometimes a drawback; ought to build in options for user to darken blinking light and to disable bluetooth (or internet) depending on user preference. Overall I am happy w/ the product. Solidly built, relatively little trouble in 3 months time. Very good functionality for the price; i would recomment the 6 mb w/ the 624 MHz processor and nothing less.

BE CAREFUL BUYING FROM DELL!!!

Pros: none, yet will write if it arrives

Cons: Lots, wrong kit, can't communicate with dell easily

Review: Be carful when ordering a dell product online. I ordered, and was charged for this model, but was sent the 312 mHz 32MB model. Not happy. Dell - great product - worse than poor after sales

Pros: Good PDA - nice to use

Cons: Small repair required - Dell comment? Buy a new one!

Review: I have had an AXIM X3 for 18 months.. but have now a small damaged socket where the charger plugs in. The pins got bent a little so it wont talk to the PC anymore. Asked Dell how much to repair (install a new socket) and they said "out of guarantee? Not worth repairing.. we have another model you could buy?" That is why I went for MESH when I bought my new PC. Would not touch DELL with a bargepole even though their kit is very good.

Happily Surprised

Pros: Easy Wi-Fi setup

Cons: Limited "Free" Software available

Review: At first look the X30 is pretty cool. After the required charge up I started configuring it. I think the hardest thing to do with this is learn the in and outs of the OS. Since this was my first PDA it took a bit of time but all was good. When ever I had a problem I used the forum on Dell and or the web.
For my first PDA, I am very happy with the product. I just wish I could find more free software out there. It does exist but limited. All and all though, solid product, easy interface once learned and excellent tool to use back and forth from the desktop to mobile.

WARNING: Seems awesome, but breaks easily!

Pros: Good Wireless, many accessories, bluetooth works, light, compact

Cons: No CF slot (only 1 SD slot), BREAKS EASILY. I'm on my third one through Dell Warranty, buttons small, uncomfortable stylus.

Review: The first time I turned my PDA on (after reading the entire user's manual and following all steps to the T) The backlight wouldn't work. I had many problems with that one so I called Dell for a replacement. That one just broke (the screen breaks easily - it freezes) and so I'm on my third. WARNING: DELL REPLACEMENTS ARE ALL REFURBISHED! I will NOT buy another Dell, and I really do not recommend them. Dell = CHEAP quality. I am very disappointed! I bought a PDA nor a disposable toy, or so I thought.

fast, great wireless

Pros: good wifi reception

Cons: meager software, difficult to find free software

Review: Didn't come with much software, but it's cheap, it's got wifi and its blazing fast. I dunno why people say that it looks a little bulky, the thing looks like a PDA and I think it's designed pretty well. I like that you can press a button and enable wifi. All the software works, really not much to say. Oh.. a negative is that there is little to know useful free sofware available. So I dunno how much good software palm has, but you have to pay quite a bit for anything you want to buy for Pocket PC.

best for the price

Pros: great hardware, great features

Cons: there is no cons in the pda itself but right programs are not available for such a good processing speed, also one thing I found is that, Internet is a little slow on 64-bit encryption.

Review: great pc, but you definately need a bigger memory card for application storage so that you can allocate more memory to run applications

with WM2005 coming, why bother?

Pros: not applicable

Cons: not app

Review: I currently own a Dell Axim5, which I rave about. Sure, it only has PPC2002, and I can only upgrade one leg of WM2003, I cannot "leap frog" to the WM2003 SE version, so I ask, with WM2005 to be released later this summer, is it worth it to get ANY PDA right now?

I myself will wait for the WM2005 version.

Cons: VERY hard to set up wireless, confusing system set up, ineffective file explorer

Review: This handheld was my first but it was worth the money. I love the wireless usages and this compact handheld fits anywhere. I had alot of trouble making this work with my Dlink wireless router but I finally figured out that it needs a 64bit encryption instead of 128bit. I bought this for the wireless though and this was the best I could find for such a low price. GREAT BUY!

Pros: Great price, Fast, slim, confortable to hold

Cons: Odd Stylus, a bit unconfortable after a while, not stylish looking

Review: This is my fourth PDA and after 2 Jornadas and 1 Ipaq 3700 series, I believe this is by far the best for the money. I paid more for my Ipaq with out Blue tooth and wi-fi that I paid for this one. Ordered go it in 3 days. Wireless works great near the router. On Hot spots works surprisingly good. Excellant for Pocket PC and cheaper than most models

Pros: wi-fi, bluetooth, vibrant screen, fastest processor.

Cons: headphone jack on the side of device, flat stylus.

Review: It's amazing to me that people are spending $400 to $500 for a Pocket PC with all the same features...Why? After shopping around for a new Pocket PC I found the Dell Axim X30 and I couldn't be happier. For $296.95 I got all of the features I wanted including the fastest processor out there and wi-fi and blutooth. Dell has done a great service for Pocket PC enthusiasts. Great PDA for $100 or more cheaper than all other models.

I am very happy with my purchase of the Dell Axim X 30.

Pros: Easy to use - fast processor - affordable - bluetooth option

Cons: software bundle

Review: The Dell Axim X 30 has turned out to be a good investment and a good first choice for a Pocket P.C. A friend from work owned one and told me about all the different applications I could use with the X -30. So I decided to try it out and haven't look back. I also bought the Dell GPS Nav. Sys. and am completly amazed at how well they work together. THANKS Nathan I owe you one!!

A fantastic upgrade from the Palm platform. Beautiful screen, fast and well designed.

Pros: Bright clear screen, comfortable and familiar windows platform beats Palm by a mile.

Cons: Some apps seem to clash with older apps. This is something the full Windows XP mostly eliminated, now the mobile version needs the same kind of workover.

Review: I'm very pleased with the quality, the design, and especially with the bright screen output. I would never go back to a Palm after trying this. The operation is so much like regular Windows that I felt at home in just minutes.

Wow ... This was definately the right choice.

Pros: Very light, got online with no problem, faster than I expected

Cons: other than the web page not fitting in the screen which makes it hard to view, can't think of any.

Review: Upgraded from the X5 which I always thought was a bit bulky and I never could get to work on-line. I was amazed at how easy it connected to my wireless network. Also thought the weight and size were great.
You need to use landscape view for the internet and so I set up one of the buttons to do it which was amazingly easy. Wish there was a way to reduce the view to fit the whole landscape view of the page but I suspect this is the same on all PDAs.
All in all this is a great product and very good value for money. Would recommend it to anyone.

Great PDA once I rec'd one that worked right

Pros: So light and thin, yet so fast and full of great features

Cons: Had to send first one back to Dell: I had to do a hard reset each time I went wireless

Review: The only thing, but probably the most important thing, that did not work with the first one I rec'd was the wireless internet. The four tech support people I talked with could not for the life of them figure out why I could not get on the net without doing a HARD reset and backing up all my data to the SD card. I spend several hours with tech support, until one finally said that Dell will send me a new one. It came in two days. New one works fine with no problems at all. I am not even sure that the original one was defective; it could have just been configured wrong, but tech had no idea of how to fix it.

Pros: WiFi, Bluetooth, all the other bells and whistles. Does not freeze up. Installation of software is a breeze and works flawlessly. My only complaints have been due to outdated software and its compatibility with Windows Mobile 2003SE. This is a great littl

Cons: External antennae. Whether it improves reception or not, I'd much rather have it internal. Not that it gets in the way, but it makes me nervous that it would be the first thing to go if I dropped my PDA (which happened many times with my old Palm...)

Great PDA. Too bad it's a Dell

Pros: Great product. Awesome grafics -- Ages of Empire plays superbly on it. Most programs work without a glitch. Between the bluetooth and the wireless, you will forever be connected to all your stuff. Great software package.

Cons: MS's character recognition soft is a little slow. On the other hand, I have problems at times recognizing my own writting, so i should not fault the software. Dell service, as always, sucks. Very well intentioned, if incompetent, indians... makes it hard

Pros: very useful features as an organizer, and for browsing the internet. For those who are interested in purchasing a gps, this is a bargain buy. After moving to tne USA and constantly getting lost, we decided to purchase the x30 with nav.

Pros: The pros would be what I see if pictures. Have not been able to hold one in my hand. I called Dell's corporate office and was abruptly sent on the phone to India. They did not want to talk to me. I tried to make a complaint.
