  • "Smartphone? More Like Genius Phone"
    on by IrvingArnold

Pros build quality is great, Larger Screen , beautiful style, sound gets louder than most laptop speakers, Long life battery (about 2x longer than iPhone), Gaming, Video and browsing the web is amazing

Cons facebook app on android sucks compared to the iphone verson.... but i just use the browswer and turn off mobile page, the screen is larger so you actually end up geting more options then iphone app in the end.

Summary I have to admit, the Dell Streak is only my second foray into the touch screen, smartphone arena, but I will say it's better than just about every other phone I've seen.

Let's start with the size, which I'm sure a lot of you are wondering about. It is, suffice to say: huge. It's got a giant screen. Lucky, most of the phone is screen, so there's not much else around the edge as far as bezel goes. This is a good thing. The 3 touch-sensitive buttons on the bottom of the phone are all you really need. Honestly, I really only ever use 2 of them all the time, but there are occasions where I do find myself reaching for the Home button to get back to my main screen after doing so much between beginning and end.

The build quality of the phone is phenomenal. It feels like a solid piece of technology, and that's because it is. It's made of high quality materials all around, front to back, top to bottom. It's got Gorilla Glass! I mean, come on! You will probably never see a scratch on this beautiful screen.

So you may have heard that the Streak comes with an "out-of-date" version of Android. This is the biggest complaint I've heard from users. Let me tell you this: It's fast. If the Streak is fast with Android v1.6, imagine what it'll be like when it's running Froyo (v2.2). Oh and it will. Look, Dell may not be giving any info about when they're releasing it, but they're going to be updating UK Streaks to 2.1, so they're obviously doing it. Calm down, take a breath. This thing is a monster with 1.6, its going to be a god with 2.2.

I've made a fair amount of calls with my Streak, and I will admit that it is kind of awkward holding it next to your head, but there's something to be said for garnering a few odd looks holding such a mammoth piece of tech to your ear while you talk to your mother. If you're interested in this, you want people to ask you what it is, that's that. You're going to be showing it off, right? Sure, you may not want people to hold it for fear of them dropping it, but you can still show them what a beauty this sucker is from a good 12 inches of personal space away. As far as call quality? Pretty freaking good. Never had a dropped call, no problems with static or anything like that.

All in all, if I could give the Dell Streak 6 out of 5 stars, I would.

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your Streak!

  • "Buy this phone upon release!!!!"
    on by parcsalooc

Pros Unbelievable phone!!! See summary for full details

Cons A lot of people are having issues w/ their screens shattering from a 2' drop. See summary for full details

    Summary Pros
Unbelievable phone!!! I have owned the Streak in the states for over 2 weeks now(build 3562). Incredible data speeds on HSDPA w/ATT (avg.1900-3500kbps)w/ a strong radio to match. Wifi speed performance is excellent. Great performance out of stock kernal. Bright and beautiful screen and great speaker sound quality. Bluetooth sounds great and is easy to connect. OS is quick and snappy despite being 1.6. It is also very pocketable despite its large size. You will get some funny comments from people when they see the size of the phone, but deep down they are envious. I have rooted it and using clockwork mod recovery image 1.8 and have superuser permissions enabled.

    Cons

I do not like the stock contact manager. It works fine as long as you don't link it w/Facebook. If you link it w/ Facebook, you have to scroll through all of your friends to find your contact. It does give the sim card option for contacts but all the info besides their phone number is missing. Example: if you want to text message, you must manually enter their number. This maybe fixed on the upcoming release or during the OTA Froyo 2.2 update. One other gripe is the dialer skin is j/ plain boring. Also not all apps fill out the screen and not all apps can be found in market as of yet(slingplayer). No rotation support on the home screen(must use landscape). I have found a work around though using ADW home that is customized for Donut. Last gripe is the annoying proprietary connection and lack of aftermarket connections as of yet. If you need a car charger, look on Ebay for usb cigarette lighter adapters(but beware not all work, must have a mains style). Gorilla Glass is not invincible, it may help against scratches, but be careful not to drop it on accident over 2' above the floor. A lot of people are having issues w/ their screens shattering from a 2' drop.

If you are looking for a great phone at a great price, sign up for the preorder on Dell's website. Despite some of the flaws listed above, I still highly recommend this phone. It truly is a step above the rest.

Another word of note, camera picture quality is subpar, especially using the flash in a dark setting(becomes very pixelated. Video quality is j/ ok

  • "Absolutely outstanding! Deserves 10 out of 10 !"
    on by kibcom

Pros Incredible large screen, feature-rich phone, long battery life, instinctive and intuitive to use.
The keyboard magically appears on screen whenever needed and is superbly designed with a numeric keypad included.

Cons No drawbacks that I can find apart from slow synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook. No doubt this will be fixed with the forthcoming free Android version update.

Summary First let me say the Dell Streak is simply superb. If it were possible I'd unhesitatingly give it a 10 out of 10 star rating. The initial quick start guide is enough to get started and there is a very comprehensive 140 page manual in a folder on the device itself.

Working as a computer technician fixing PC's running Microsoft Windows, the Streak is the perfect mobile office and entertainment centre device for my daily needs. I've never been a fan of the Apple Mac world and neither the iPhone nor the iPad offered the type of comprehensive 'all-in-one' gadget required.

With the Streak I can phone, browse the net and email while on the move in any location. The design is perfect with buttons all well placed and easy and responsive to use. The auto rotate works brilliantly and needing to rotate thru 360 degrees is just pointless. The forthcoming Streak dock means it can also be used to view tv or video while on charge if required.

The keyboard magically appears on screen whenever needed and is superbly designed with a numeric keypad included. It makes text messaging so simple rather than a chore.

The 5mp camera gives fine, sharp images although slightly over saturated in colour while the camcoder facility produces excellent footage without over-vivid colours.

The Android apps are abundant and frequently free. The addition of a text to speech app to Google Maps turns the Streak into a fantastic sat nav machine. The option to use a Google Earth overhead view while navigating and Street View when nearing your destination is simply awesome.

Browsing the internet is just a joy with web pages appearing exactly as they would on your PC. Photos displayed on screen look stunning and all sound and picture content is easily accessed and controlled. Email is easy to set up and synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook's Calendar, Contacts and Inbox works brilliantly if a little slow.

Incredible large screen, feature-rich phone, long battery life, instinctive and intuitive to use - the Dell Streak is absolutely outstanding. It's twice as good as I dared to hope it would be! It's the ideal device for anyone wanting something that at last fills the gap between gadgets like the iPad and the Smartphone.

Finally, unbeknown to me, my son who is far more 'tech-savvy' than I am, also bought a Streak on the same day I got mine. He is equally impressed and delighted with it.

For £35 a month over 2 years and free from O2, with unlimited web access and 600 call minutes, the Streak has really gone clear. A true bargain and not to be missed!

  • "Really happy after upgrading from iPhone to Streak"
    on by dnarm

Pros Great screen, can actually use comfortably to read web pages, emails, books. Extra screen size works superbly for navigation in car and general map based use.
All phone/wireless reception twice as good as old iPhone and more accurate on GPS.

Cons Keyboard prediction is not as good, but happy to trade twice over because I can now use letters AND numbers at same time (post codes and passwords on iPhone were a real pain!)
Would be nicer if rotation worked for all 4 orientations, not just 2.

Summary Brilliant, who needs an iPad?!
This fits easily and comfortably in my pocket and is a really good phone as well. Looking forward to the Android update soon which should complete my satisfaction.

  • "Awesome LCD, powerful Wifi antenna...great job Dell"
    on by number1973

Pros The quality of the videos on this large LCD screen is amazing.
Plays .avi movie files unlike apple iphone/touch, which only supports mp4/mpv format.
The wifi antenna is the strongest I've ever used on a mobile device....as good as my Dell laptop.

Cons Couple of drawbacks...when the GPS is on, the battery life can take hit.
Android needs to hurry up with the release of 2.2 for flash support.

Summary Product is great....other than the somewhat lacking battery power, this phone/tablet PC is just amazing.
The 800 x ? video resolution is awesome. Another BIG plus is that it supports avi format not only mp4, which makes it easy to play video from the web without having to convert your video files to a different size/format.
Dell has released a major competitor of the apple's iphone/ipod touch.
