Pros: Excellent handheld item very nice and works well. Love my Treo 90.
Cons: The only draw back to this rather expensive item is the screen lights do not last very long. I have had my palm for almost three years. No one bother to mention the lights on PDA devices go out.. No where on the box when I purchased my PDA for a little o

Cons: Yes, I am another victim of the "backlight on the screen won't work" problem. They want $99 to fix it even though they KNOW it's a widespread problem. Of course, mine broke six months after the warrany expired. I think I'm done with Handspring.

My first PDA - I like itby - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This is my first PDA. I wanted something without Grafiti or Windoze. I think they did a good job on this one, and I have few complaints. I'm not a heavy PDA user, so I can't say if there are better options for some of the tools, but this suits me well. I do wish they'd figured out how to put some type of cursor movement on the keyboard - you have to use the stylus to move around the screen. But most buttons and such are selectable with a fingernail. The color screen is great, but as others have said, a backlit keyboard would have helped in low light situations. If you have a cell phone, seriously consider the 300, it will be one less thing to carry. This can now be had for around $150 plus shipping, maybe cheaper if you're willing to get an open box on Ebay.

Good product, but needs work stillby - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I acquired my Treo 90 as a replacement for a lost Visor Edge. As usual, none of the connectors or accessories were compatible, which is constant source of irritation. However, in general I have been pleased with the Treo, due principally to the built-in keyboard (that clinched it over a Palm for me). Utter lack of product availability in retail stores is disturbingly similar to the lack of support for Apple products, which makes me think that I'll be buying a Palm next time around.

Best deal I have ever seen!by - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This is my fourth PDA. I started off with the palm III, then a IIIxe, Then a VX. All were ok, but none compared to this. I was looking at staples.com and I saw it for $169. That is cheaper than all of the greyscale pda's I had before. I would recommend this to anyone. The only downside is the lack of a graffiti area. But few people are really fond of it anyway. I do miss the button you press to go to the palm launcher. That has been replaced with 2 buttons. But i can live with it. It is very fast and has very nice accessories. Don't buy a different pda. This is the one right here. Unless you are willing to spend over $400

Still the most practical one.by - April 24, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I just bought my second Treo 90 after my first one lost 9 months ago. I wanted to get a more updated one with the same advantage I loved. I searched and studied for all these months, and could not find any but Treo 90. True, that there are plenty of advances was made in PDA technology since the birth of Treo 90. However, for a busy physician, how many time I will have the leisure to enjoy web surfing, camera, music, game, etc., on the tiny machine? All I need is a tiny and light one so I can carry it around with no burden in my pocket, and a lot of memory so I can load reference books to it, and a reasonable speed. Color is a nice but unneccessary extra. To enjoy any thing more than to do list, appointments, schedules, and quick reference, I would prefer to sit in my leather chair and play comfortably on my desktop. I missed the graffiti with my first Treo 90, since I could not type in dark, but now Handspring provides free software, so that's solved. I really don't see a significant preference between QWERTY key board and graffiti, but it is always nice to have the choice, and now with Treo 90 and the free recoecho I do have the options. The only thing Treo 90 may need some improvement is the resolusion and the speed, but that's not major. It is so cute and so light that NONE, NONE others beat it. To me, size and weight are the first priorities for PDR. That's the point for PDR rather than a laptop or even desktop. Carrying a 6-7 oz monster for 10 hrs a day and enjoy the even so called high tech fun only less than one hr a day is really not fun at all. I was very dissappointed with Handspring's discontinuation of Treo 90. I can easily get a pretty cute cell phone for free, and easy to talk while working on PDR. Imagin, when you pick up a call with Treo 300, and was asked about a drug you don't remember, and have to reach the pocket and get that wire and plug in so you can talk and using PDR, how many steps you have waste here? And if you lost your one piece, you lost everything. The trend in manufacture is to build bigger and fancier machines. But remember how Palm Vx became a best seller. So far no body beats Vx in weight. Treo 90 matches the weight with some update in tech. I am wait for the next generation light PDA that inherits the spirit of Palm Vx, if this will happen ever.

THE PRICE WE PAY FOR SPEEDY DEVELOPMENTby - March 13, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I've had my Treo for a little over 30 days. I love gadgets, but for practicality and efficiency, ONLY. This device has served it's purpose well for scheduler, contact info, personal info, etc...an updated electronic organziers, but with quite a few more features. One MAJOR problem is that I bought it as a PDA with WEB browsing capabilities. I'm still trying but have yet to get that to work. I've purchased two of the same cables so far from SupplyNet (the only provider) and get the same message with both, "bad cable or faulty modem". I was able to work with my cell phone tech support and SupplyNet's tech support, but not much luck so far with Handspring.(My other MAJOR problem). I read another review that the says the problem is with Handspring's software; haven't got an answer from them on that yet. Maybe it is the cable; my phone's fine. And if I can't get this resolved, I'll return the cables and use it as a more costly electronic organizer, it works fine for that and it's already loaded with my info.

Best PDA I have ever used!by - February 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have bought used and sold about 6 different PDA's. Trying to find one to do what I needeed. I am an EMT-IV, Paramedic student. I use mine in the feild in class and at home. The screen is just the right size, the keyboard short of being back-lit is the perfect size, and at four ounces and a little larger than a 3.5 floppy where can you go wrong. The 16 megabytes is wonderful, I keep medicines, and guides and grocerylist and MY LIFE in this PDA. Again it is the best thing (next to my wife) I ever came in contact with. I am planning on buying one for my wife. And by the way, the EMS I work for provided them for the admin.

good product, TERRIBLE supportby - January 28, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Don't get me wrong, I'm really liking this handheld, which I've had for a little less than a month. Besides the joy of finally having a color handheld, I find the screen to be wonderfully touch-sensitive, something that was lacking on my old Palm. This is also so small and light! I'm totally amazed. Unfortunately, I've had a few little glitches and had to deal w/ Customer Support via e-mail and phone. It took days and days to get a response to my e-mail. When I received it, they gave me a fix for a Visor, rather than the Treo. (I mean c'mon -- the e-mail request specifies which device you need assistance for.) I replied, pointing out the error. Days later, they gave me a fix for a Communicator, not the Treo 90, so I replied again. Finally, after a week, I got an e-mail instructing me to call Customer Service. It's a long-distance number, and I had a fifteen-minute hold time. The guy gave me the fix, which was so easy that there was absolutely no reason why I couldn't have gotten it via e-mail. But he was really bad at explaining things, so it was pretty frustrating. In short, if you buy this, you'd better pray you can fix your glitches w/out having to deal w/ Handspring technical support!

Not for carrying in a bagby - January 24, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: It is too bad the Treo 90 has some major design flaws. Firstly it was turning on all the time in my bag, everytime it rubbed/bumped up against something. I was not willing to put it in and additional case that would make it much larger and heavier since one of the best features is how light the device is. The keyboard was easy to use, but also awkward since you often need to use both the pen and the keyboard together. Unlike other palm OS devices it is more difficult to navigate between programs. I am returning the Treo and will continue my search.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I received this as a Christmas gift from my wife when she saw how much use I got out of my Palm IIIe. It was easy to set up, transfer data, and start using. Though the keyboard took some getting used to, I do fairly well with it now. I did however, install RecoEcho Plus to allow me to use Graffiti - I'm actually faster with it. I don't consider myself a power-user, but maybe close. This device keeps my appointments and contacts handy, is easy on the eyes, and fits in my pocket. It definitely works for me.

Keep up the good work!by - January 16, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Treo 90 Installation was a snap. Keyboard is easy and fast to use and I have very large hands. I have installed nearly 200 Palm applications, and every one works, Palm OS rules! An FYI to those many complainers, the new version of Palm OS from Handspring (free) provides SD I/O capability for intefacing with other devices besides memory cards (who needs proprietary Springboard anyway). My father recently purchased an HP iPAQ(Pocket PC based), and when he saw what I could do with my Palm based PDA he is on the verge of switching. My 33MHZ appears to be much faster than his 200MHZ. Palm OS is definately more reliable and more efficient. For serious PDA users that aren't interested in multimedia and MP3 there is no discussion, Palm is it, and it NEVER crashes, plus there are literaly thousands of applications available for Palm. It's funny to read these reviews, you rarely see such passion unless you are discussing politics or religion. Only knocks I have on the Treo 90 are: No Serial cable available anywhere to attach my GPS and the included Wordsmith software won't allow me to store documents on my 256MB Secure Digital Card (stupid), so I bought Documents to go v5 and can store tons of useful documents and spreadsheets. One other thing which may be my own ignorance is I can't create categories for applications stored on my SD memory card.

Good. Could be great if...by - January 2, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: ...Handspring added two things: First: Once Sony lit the way with the jog-shuttle, I don't know why EVERYONE hasn't added this feature. It's the greatest productivity innovation since the Palm was introduced. Second: Add a dedicated HOME key. Most people use the home key pretty often to exit applications and it's annoying to be forced into 2 keystrokes. Other than these two quibbles, it's a pretty nice unit. Pick it up as an Open Box item at Best Buy for $140 and it's a great deal.

Poor Quality, Service and Displayby - January 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have had my unit since September 6th (Today is 1/1/03). The display went dark after one week. The next unit ceased operation on December 11th and was replaced under the extended warranty. The current unit will not beam and Handspring is refusing to even discuss this matter unless I provide a credit card number for the technicians time. Don't buy this unit unless you want problems. If you do, realize that the extended warranty is a rip off. Between the poor brightness of the screen, the poor quality of the unit and the poor quality of the service I am giving up. I am switching to a Toshiba Pocket PC.

Review: This is my first PDA since my days of the casio data bank and the casio BOSS when they were called organizers, lol. This PDA is more powerful than my first Tandy pc, and I can carry it in my pocket. the size is great, the programs and lay out is great, I missed the introduction of the graffiti so I don't have an issue with it, I did download it but I don't use it that much. I chose this one because of the key board, I wish it was illuminated, not a big issue. I did experience the backlight problem and I got my replacement PDA one day faster than promised, the only thing I did not like was I got a refurbished/recodition (my term vs the reps. term) replacement and the warranty date did reflect the replacement unit. but overall I am very pleased with this product. Garbage durability, garbage customer serviceby - December 25, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: While shopping for a new organizer Handspring seemed like the best choice for the price out there. How very very wrong I was. My Organizer came with a 90 day warranty and just after 90 days it crashed. None of the resets recommended worked nor was there anything on their web-site that was helpful, so I called their support line. After dumping a large sum of money to buy this product just over three months ago they wanted another $20 before I could even tell them what was wrong with my organizer. If 90 days is all that Handspring thinks their products are good for, and if they only last 90 days you will be far better off buying something else, anything else. I even wrote to their customer service telling them how disappointed I was, but they don't care. They wrote me back and assured me that their customer service is great, but only if I pay them even more money. Ridiculous! They got their money and don't want to hear from me again unless I give them more. If I were you I would never buy ANY Handspring product, because if it breaks they don't care.

Close to greatness!by - December 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Starting with the Handspring Visor Deluxe, with an upgrade to the Prism, and now 5 months with the Treo 90, I continue to be a loyal Handspring customer. I like the size of the Treo very much, and the 16 mb is more than enough for my applications. Compactness and versatility are its best features, as I have no need for a cellphone or wireless (already too conected). It is nearly perfect as an organizer. Problematic for me is the absence of grafitti, which I still find to be the fastest and most natural data entry method (I downloaded an application to still use grafitti -kudos on going back to grafitti), absence of an easy shortcut to lock the unit, its tendency to turn itself on from the exposed buttons, hard to reach off-on button, and poor quality color display for photos (relative to the Prism). All in all though, another terrific Handspring product.

Best PDA Value Availableby - November 18, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The Treo 90 is the smallest PDA available, with 16 MB of memory and a color screen. I have had mine for 2 months now and couldn't live without it. It has memory to spare for my many applications and games, and a large contact database that I sync with Outlook on my PC. I also added a 16MB SD card to store some large ebooks that I read on it. The built-in thumb keyboard is faster for me than Graffiti, but Handspring also lets you download RecoEcho+, which allows Graffiti input. I have played around with this, but for me the keyboard is faster. My only wish is for a backlit keyboard, which I understand you get with the Treo 300 (along with telephone capabilities). I have tried the new Tungsten, and the color screen resolution is better, but it is $200 more and has less usable memory. I don't get the criticism about lack of a Springboard slot. I guess it would be nice, but I was comparing Treo 90 with one of the color Palms or a Pocket PC, so it wasn't an issue with me. For the price and for what you get, I don't think you can beat the Treo 90

I was a VERY happy customer of handspring products having owned the basic and later, the Deluxe Visor with and eye on the Treo line as my next long overdue upgrade. I had cracked the screen on my Visor Deluxe and had decided it was "UPGRADE TIME!" Not wanting to throw away a FANTASTIC product I opted for repair, in order to pass on my old PDA to my daughter. It turned out that I had believed incorrectly, great products do not necessarily make great companies. I have the choice of repairing the deluxe for $99.00 or buying a replacement for the SAME AMOUNT! I was informed that the price was for ANY repair, not just the major repair mine required. A button replacement cost the same as a new CPU! It is tantamount to no service at all. I would NEVER stand for an auto dealership who demanded that I would receive NO trade in and ALL repairs cost the same as a replacement vehicle. It has been said that one unhappy customer can undo the good will created by 100 satisfied customers and I now understand that trueism. I work for the state of Florida Health Department, and much conversation is made on information management in the field. Until recently, I was a big fan of Handspring devices. The point to this letter? I am still looking for a new PDA, as mine is now worthless. I just hope that I can find one the same quality as the Visor line had, maybe a Pocket PC......

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I'm going to tell it as it is: if you like the Palm environment and you dont like this handheld, grow up. $300 isnt bad for a pda- my pocketpc cost over $600- and when it comes right down to it, this is probably the best solution for the mobile professional that doesnt have a cell phone built into it- who wants to hold their Palm PDA up to their ear anyway?!?! This machine will get you going and make sure you keep going.

Finally found my PDAby - October 21, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have been looking at PDA's for the past 6+ months. I needed one that first fit my needs without breaking the bank. I found this product to be a basic PDA. It allowed me to install the applications I needed, as well as, the functionallity necessarry. I wasn't into the graffiti portion so this keyboard works perfectly. If I had to say anything bad about the performance of this unit it would be the lack of the springboard slot but, then again it wasn't a specification I was looking for.

A must have gadget!by - October 20, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I wanted a PDA for all the normal reasons, plus I wanted to play chess. My first thought was to get a Pocket PC but the cost was prohibitive, then I saw the Treo 90 and knew it was for me. The thumbpad is great, although it would be nice to hit just one button to get to the main menu. It was still a bit spendy, but my first PDA has made CNET's top ten must have gadget list for good reason. The Treo 90 plus Chess Tiger is a terrific combo.

Very nice keyboard integrationby - October 14, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Treo 90 is the best PDA I have ever used: I owned HP200LX, Windows CE, Palm, and Visor previously. I love Treo 90's ultra portability with ease of keyboard input. I can type things almost anywhere very quickly. I think HS did a really good job integrating a useful keyboard into a tiny device. This would be my best investment of the year.

Great device BUT-by - October 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Does not have graffiti option, which before you could type with one hand- now you have to use both thumbs to operate the keyboard. Should have offered both. Also- navigation could be much better- the pen is included just to navigate, so you must use it to select text, but then you have to switch back to the keyboard to use any editing functions. What a pain and poor design planning. On/off button too recessed so it taked a lot of effort to turn this off and on. Other than that, fast and small and the color is really nice and vibrant.

Great value for the money. Love the keyboard and the color..by - October 3, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought a palm m500 and really liked it BUT I traded it in for the Treo 90. Like this much better. The color is great and data entry is much quicker with the built in keyboard. If they had a jog dial (like Sony) and/or another way to move between applications without using the stylus I'd give it a 10!

Handspring support terrible!by - September 25, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The Treo 90 is a great product but without support it's useless. 90 days of free support is unexceptable. Even if you buy an extended warranty you still hve to pay for support after 90 days. If Handspring replaces you Treo because of a problem and they send you another Treo with a problem you have to pay for support. Who came up with this plan? Stick with Palm. Far and above better support.

It is tiny and comply inobstrusive in my pocket where it lives daily, the color screen is great, the 16 megs of RAM ample for any reasonable use of the product, the the keyboard surprising useful. Review: I've gone thru 4 of these products. Handspring keeps shipping them to me because I'm getting buggy hardware. Now they shipped my latest replacement to another state, and the shipping company delivered it to the wrong house. Handspring won't ship me a new product. Customer Support supervisors don't return phone calls they promis to, and they've dropped the ball a half dozen times. Go for another manufacturer. Bad Screen.by - September 18, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I am changing from a Palm IIIC to the Treo. The Palm is starting to have problems and it is time. I like the size, weight and keyboard on the Treo 90. I like that it runs all my Palm software and is reasonably priced. What I did not like was having to shell out another $50 for a cradle (although a cradle is a convenience, not a necessity because it comes with a USB cable and charger). What is really turning me off is the screen. This is perhaps the worst screen I have seen in years. I know I have seen worse, but that was on some of the very first laptop computers in the late 80's or early 90's. I am going to keep it for now because of the good features, but I doubt if I will be keeping it for very long.

Great PDA, for those looking to upgradeby - September 1, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: After years of using a paper organizer, (college and post-dorm life--WORK) I bought a Palm IIIe. I loved it so much I told myself, "I'll never go back to paper again." I didn't. So here's a question: What's the point in using an organizer if you have to write your notes twice? Face it, the graffiti was tricky, at best. Even once you got it down pat, did you really think it would be used anywhere else? I didn't. Sure you could buy a fold-up keyboard, lug it and your PDA to meetings. But why do that? I didn't. Enter my new Treo 90. I find that the SD slot alone is a plus. I hated the "springboard-thing" anyway. (Yes, I had a Visor, and returned it within 2 days) I love my Treo 90! The keyboard is small; so is the PDA--that's the beauty of it! The color screen does look better on the Palm m515 but are you going to pay and additional $100 just for that? The amount of space is outstanding. The speed is amazing. And the resolution is really not bad for only 4,000 colors. Another nice touch is the see-through-flip-up cover. I saved $20 when I bought it at Staples, plus I got a $10 coupon for a Handspring.com purchase. ((WAAHOO)) To all the reviewers who think this is "limited." If you want to listen to MP3s, stare at photos and call your friends on one device, go buy the Nokia 9290 Communicator + the Sony CLIE. Answer these questions to help aid in your PDA decision: - Do you have an older PDA? - Did you get used to using graffiti? - Did you hate to "re-write" your notes? - Do you just want to keep track of dates, Phone Numbers? - Want to quickly add a note or two? - Want to get news web-clips in color? - Want to edit a document w/o the need of another "typing device?" - Do you have a mobile phone? - Do you have a CD or CD/MP3 player? Saying yes to 2 or more of the above question means the Treo 90 is the PDA for you.

Great PDA for the non-power users!by - August 28, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Okay, First I must say that half these reviews are from people that don't even own the Treo 90. I find it difficult to rely on CNET for user opinions because of this. I OWN THIS PDA. Now heres what I think about it. First, its the best value I have seen for a color Palm based PDA. Yes it doesn't have MP3 or a backlit keyboard. But if it did, would you pay more? You probably would. But then if you want all that in one device, pay through the nose and buy a Sony! I agree that there should be a better home shortcut. But heck wasn't the purpose of a PDA for Calendar/To Do/ Memo/ Address book? These are all accessible by one button, even if the power is off. About the use who complained about keylock? Get bigger pants! so what if you have to lock and unlock 18 times a day. Thats what? 72 seconds? You will easily save that time entering text with a keyboard over graffiti! For those who like graffiti and writing non-intuitive characters that are constantly confused for other letters, dont buy this PDA! For those of you who say a thumb keyboard is slow, I say bring it on! I can input text 10 times as fast! So if you are considering this PDA for cost reasons, I highly recommend this model. Yeah the next best thing is always around the corner, but its been that way for 20 years! Buy a P4 3Ghz today, P8 10 Ghz comes out the next year (yes, thats an exaggeration)...but you get the point. So please don't review this if you don't own it. All you brand loyalists are so quick to judge.

Thumb Pads Are Inefficientby - August 28, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The graffiti language takes a little time to get use to but is MUCH more efficient than the thumb pad. You still have to use the stylus to navigate making it even harder to use the thumb pad. In addition you can write in the dark with graffiti however the keypad is useless in the dark. This would be a much better device without the keypad!

Thumbs upby - August 28, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This is my first handheld (actually my second if you count the fact that I had to send my first Treo 90 back because of a black screen after 3 weeks). Even so, I find it very useful. I sync it to both my Mac at home and my IBM T23 at work. A criticism of the Mac desktop software (it's not even the same program as found on the windoze desktop). It's either Handsprings fault or Palms fault, I don't know, but the Mac software that comes with the Treo is inferior to the other. Example: I get paid every friday. I was able to add a recurring entry in the datebook called "payday" every other friday on the IBM. When I sync it to my Mac, the palm desktop delivers an error saying it doesn't accept type entry of "payday." Translation, it only accepts recurring entrys of type "yearly". And I wish the batteries could be replaced, but that seems to be the wave of the present and future for most handhelds. And don't think you can stick all sorts of programs on your expansion card (if you get one) Dictionary to go (4.5 meg), 2sky (350K), Mapopolis (4.5 meg) either don't work or don't work well enough on your SD card for you to want them to be there. In spite of this, I find it very useful and part of it is because it doesn't require grafiti. I already know how to use the keyboard and a little practice makes you even better. I purchased the action case which allows you to carry it around on your belt and find that to be very useful. All in all, inspite of its' warts, I rate it a high B.

A great handheld at a great price!by - August 21, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The lack of a Grafiti area was the first thing I noticed on the Treo, which i believe is an improvement. The keyboard is very useful, and helps the Treo's image of a defined handheld. This is Handspring's finest. The only better Palm handheld would be the Sony NR70 series. The flip lid is a thumbs up feature, which will protest the color screen from many scratches.

Great features without battery draining bells and whistlesby - August 15, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I actually purchased both the SONY T615 and Treo90 since no store had both to compare side by side OR functioning units on display. Instantly I preferred the TREO but had great difficulty making the final decision because the SONY has a hands down better color screen in resolution and crispness and more "stuff." However, as a first time "handheld" user, the Treo set up flawlessly and quickly, while the SONY took lots of research to get through some glitches and much longer to charge the battery. SONY required some additional steps (not listed - took research to figure out the problem) to set up the software so that past (all) calendar items would sync, and that ALL fields in my contacts would sync as well. Finally both handhelds were operational so it was time to compare. Clearly the SONY has more capabilities, but how many would I ever use?? (unless you're into showing digital photos on your handheld). It was like TOO MUCH of a good thing. Bottom line was that most of SONY's extras I wouldn't use and they seem to DRAIN the battery very quickly as I could watch the indicator go down with each use. (Just compare the memory USED from the MAIN screen's "info" bar to see the difference in TREO and SONY's USED memory!) ALSO like TREO's chargers and hot sync cords much better - easier and streamlined. WHO NEEDS A CRADLE? Although it is available separately. The SONY was far more awkward to sync and charge and didn't seem to sit securely in the cradle. TREO Datebook has more calendar "views" than the SONY, and a few other minor things I just liked better. Interesting that I read SEVERAL critiques of problems with the TREO that are simply PREFERENCE issues or accessible thru the various pulldown menus - obviously many of the people simply don't completely know how to USE or SET-UP the device. Unfortunate when they are going to critique something and they don't thoroughly know what they are talking about, and this is my first handheld! But computer "common sense" comes to play here and clearly some of those expressing their opinion lacked the proper knowledge even for a beginner. For example, the two button "home" feature WAS annoying on the TREO, but the bottom buttons CAN BE CUSTOMIZED in "Preferences" for your use. I set the FAR RIGHT button (memo pad) to LAUNCH the home screen. That solved that problem. That was one of a few complaints in this opinion poll that can be CUSTOMIZED - just like the complaints about no backlight on the keyboard - do these people realize that TREO has an ON-SCREEN keyboard as well!? So who needs a backlight. Also, to the person who said you need TWO hands to flip the lid!? Maybe he/she does, but I'm able to lift the lid either with my first finger on the right tab while holding the unit, OR if not holding the unit, simply by having my thumb on the left and 1st finger on the right - then LIFT - "hello?!" what was that person thinking? - not a problem. Surprisingly since TREO has less software than the SONY, TREO DOES have a few simple games that SONY does not - these are a great time passer if waiting in a Dr's office or whereever. So yes, the screen is a disappointment, but GUESS WHAT? If it's not right next to a high resolution screen, and you're NOT planning to view photos or run mini-movies, it's a great little color screen! I like the contacts set-up (more info viewable on screen) better than SONY, and the extra calendar VIEWS that SONY does not have. So after really thinking this through and acknowledging that technically SONY DOES have a lot more features, the question was "And how many of them will I use?" To that my TREO90 has all I need PLUS games SONY does not have, a second manual keyboard IN ADDITION to the on-screen keyboard, and it's lighter and sleek to slip in a pocket or purse, (I found a great little jewelry bag which I had, that TREO90 slips into which protects it further, without adding any space!) AND remember that extra SONY software, if you don't need it, DRAINS and DRAINS the battery really quickly - I could virtually watch the power drain from the home screen indicator. So, my TREO does all I need and I'd HIGHLY recommend THIS MODEL for first time users especially, since it sets up almost instantly without the glitches that came with the SONY. Those glitches could easily intimidate a beginner or non-savvy computer user into thinking the unit was defective. Too much detective work was required to get the SONY working smoothly. So I love my little TREO90 despite less features than SONY. Make a pro and con list and it's all about what works for you. For me, in this case, "LESS is MORE!" Hope this helps someone.

Cons:
Review: Handspring has been having a bit of trouble lately; first they discontinue their "Visor" line, then they recall their Treo's due to a backlight issue. Having a PDA/phone combo is great, but keeping the form factor for a PDA is not a good idea. The screen is small, and the keyboard is hard to use, and read. Get it without and then, Oh gee look here is your expansion slot. That will be another $599 and have a nice day! Also would like to see it up to 64meg to keep in line with the Pocket PC. Almost there!by - July 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I'm still waiting to purchase my first PDA and had my heart set on this unit. However, I've noticed the unit does not have a backlit keyboard and no scroll/jog button a la Sony. The search continues. (Wanted to go with Palm but I've heard too many horror stories about their customer service)

Great Value & functional PDAby - July 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have used most of the palm products and like them. I am not crazy about graffiti since I drive and look things up at the same time. Now I can use one hand for searching. I find the screen to be clear & bright color compared to my Palm 505. You look at the price and you wonder why someone would pay so much more for a palm 515. Great job and seems the product will only get better.

No future on the Macby - July 1, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I emailed Handspring about Mac OS X support and was extremely disappointed with their response: we do not plan on releasing Mac OS X compatible software. No hedging, no it's under development. Flat out there will be no Mac OS X support. Ever. Too bad, because its the first handheld since the Palm V that I wanted.

Treo 90=Visor Prism replacemant?! YAH RIGHT!by - June 30, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The Treo in no means can replace something that was like the Visor Prism. As far as I see it people who buy the Treo 90 are getting ripped off. The Treo 90 isent even expandable and has only 12 bit color and a smaller screen. Ok the Treo has 16 mb of memory but the Visor Prism can have that too! The Treo cant be a cell phone, Mp3 player, camera, modem and other expandables, while the Visor Prism can! The only great advantage of the Treo 90 over the Prism is its weight and size. Yes, Handspring did discontinue the Visor Prism becuase they think the Treo 90 can replace it. Like you can see I think this is dumb and crazy. The Treo cost 300 dollars! When its features are so not worth all of that. I just cant see the logic in the Treo 90 being such a great thing for Handspring.

Wait for next generationby - June 26, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This product needs refinement. Great concept, and a concept which will (I believe) eventually dominate the PDA market (i.e. small form factor with thumb keyboard). Problem 1: Lid must be opened with two hands. Why not just put the little 'tab' on the lid in a place where you could actually use it to open the device single handedly 2 Lid doesn't cover function buttons. This means you either turn the machine on eighteen times a day accidentally, or press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to lock and unlock the keys each time you use it (maybe more than 18 times a day) 3 No backlight on keyboard USELESS in the dark. Absolutely useless! 4 'Shortcut' key is 6 keys away. Not a shortcut in my opinion. This is so strange. If anything, it should be its own key. 5 HOME key is gone and is actuated by a 2 handed key press. What were they thinking. This should be a dedicated button! 6 Missing HOME key would be fine if there were some way (perhaps on the BUTTONS menu) to make 'hotkeys' for each of your desired apps. This is such a no brainer. Wake up guys! 7 Grafitti is still superior when you've got your stylus out and need to just type something. I think the device should support both, even if the grafitti area is up on the regular screen. Handspring will say 'use jot' but personally, I don't want to have to re-learn to write on my pda. 8 Not to beat a dead horse, but why not put flash ram in this baby, so later when everybody complains about the lack of [blank] it can be fixed and patched. I don't get it.

What Handspring provides in a compact, bright PDA, is lost to poor customer service.by - June 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Unit is bright and fast. Looks a little flimsy compared to my Palm III. Very small, fits well in shirt pocket. Extremely light weight. Only drawback so far is bad spring tension for stylus holder. Stylus holder lost it grip right from the start (two weeks form purchase). Now stylus will fly out of the device if user is not careful. Handspring will repair under 1 year warranty, however does not pay full shipping charges. Very dissapointing customer service. Even after I insisted they pay all shipping charges for defective unit, they refused. Probably my last Handspring product.

Nice concept but..............by - June 21, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: As a Handspring fan from day one I'm really disappointed. No graffiti and no available 3rd party keyboard. Try doing a tab in WordSmith. Still have to have stylus in hand to get around in many apps. And the unique feature about the Visor is gone -- no springboard. High price when you pay extra for the cradle. After five visors and a Treo 90 looks like I'm moving on to Sony. Sorry Handspring.

they've almost got it right...by - June 20, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I am a Handspring fan and decided to upgrade from my old Visor Platinum. Had the Treo 90 for ONE DAY and returned it. The keyboard isn't backlit...no expansion slot...rendering everything I've purchased up to that point useless. The lack of a toggle joystick or keyboard shortcuts meant that I had to type and keep my stylus out. Very cumbersome. Went back to my old Visor for now... so close, yet so far....

Nada, Can't read screen outside a bright day, can't type at night, no back-lit keyboardby - June 17, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The raves and good reviews are a bit too hasty at giving the Treo 90 a thumbs up. Battery runs down fast when accessing apps on a SD expansion card. The SD slot isn't bluetooth compatible. You can't scribble on the screen, just tap. You can't read from the screen on sunny days in the shade. For pocket carrying pda owners, the texture of the screen is a magnet for dust and fuzz, carry a q-tip for cleaning it. And the four exposed Palm button turn on the device if pressed while being carried in the pocket - another battery drainer. You can't get in bed at night and type your few last thoughts for the day, because of no back-lit qwerty keyboard. Handspring came close, a nice idea, but it lacks follow thru. It was tempting on the surface, but no cigar for me! I took it back and am waiting for something improved upon, while I use my Vx and thumbboard. Maybe I can I trade in my Nokia 3360 and Vx for the next gen of the treo 270, if the major carriers start carrying and handspring starts taking my suggestions seriously. Lightup the keyboard and change out the screen. That's my twobits!

palm users, this is really cool!by - June 15, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have used palm, the new sony clie nr70v and now treo90. the sony screen is better, however...the treos built in keyboard is MUCH easier to use than the sony and the contact lookup is Fast and much better than having to use a stylus as with the sony. did I mention the treo shows all the phone numbers for a person on one screen and the sony does not. next, I read where one reviewer did not like having to push two buttons to get to home. guess what, go to preferences and you can designate any one of the four action buttons to use as a home button(applications). I use the far right hand button(memo) If you want to look at pictures all day, and show off, then get the sony for $500-600. If you want a pda that you can carry in your pocket, weighs only four ounces, can hold an entire database with HanDbase, has superfast contact lookup, and a decent color screen- get the treo 90. I really love this thing!

Awesome PDA, Small, Compact and Room for Expansionby - June 13, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I enjoy my Treo it has all the functionality I need and it's in color. Ingore the naysaysers. No springboard -don't need one. I already have a digital camera, cell phone, remote control and GPS in my car. If you think about it, if you lose your PDA, those attachements don't work. Additionally, comments like it's a cheap copy of a Palm. Some people forget that one of the founders of Palm, started Handspring. And don't forget at $299, with thousands of applications it's the best investment you can make. I was quite surprised CNET gave it an 8, it should've been rated a 9.5. Not all of us need the springboard.

Still wish it did Graffitiby - June 13, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: New Treo 90 owner here and long time Palm user. Loved the size and form factor. Though i find the power button tricky to locate and use. Love being able to use the seperate power & hotsync cables. No need to buy a seperate travel charger and/or hotsync cable. Not crazy about the keyboard so far. It really needs a dedicated "Home / Applications" button. I still wish it did Graffiti. I think I will have to buy Recoecho 1.1 to get it back. I really don't like "Contacts" and wish "Addressbook" was still on the Treo mainly for just one function, sorting by company name, last name. I think I will have to buy Address Plus to get that function back. Overall a great value.

Review: I've had it for a week and love it. Its very small, light, and easy to use. However, seems that handspring has taken some functionality out of its palm OS by limiting its addressbook. Review: Have been using a Sony Clie' 610C and just got the Treo 90. I find it to be a nice light and compact unit. I hate carrying around a 10 pound PDA.....no matter what it does. Since I don't need wireless, it fits my needs quite well. Another reason it appealed to me was because of the keyboard. The only thing I do miss is the 320x320 resolution. This is a tough thing to do without once you get used to it.

almost there, but could be ALOT better.by - June 8, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: this PDA has the attention to the right area - the industrial design, but beyond that it falls short in many ways. 1. the memory is too small - should be 64MB 2. no compact flash type II socket - how do i get to use a WiFi card or a CF camera? 3. Perforamnce is mediocre at best - it should be a 206 MHz AtrongARM. 4. limited installed software -c'mon load it up! 5. should have a 4-way button instaed of up/down. 6. Only one type of service and that is thru handspring - sucks! -- BUT for the positives it does have: 1. cell phone duh! (and the only thing that distinguishes it 2. Not bad color display -refer to new Sony or Sharp PDA's if you want to see a display 3. Size -PERFECT! 4. flip cover *nice* 5. antenna is somewhat small (could be better integrated when not in use - they break off easy). ---------- Overall if you want a PDA that has power, i would suggest the Sharp ZAURUS and get a separate phone.

Review: I have owned every handheld ever made and this is truly the next generation. I have been using Grafiti for years and have had no problem switching to the keyboard. I wanted to try the Treo 270 (with cell) but Voicestream is a joke. 16mb of RAM is perfect for AvantGo and lots of applications. Dont have one = No Reviewby - June 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Please stop reviewing if you dont have the product. MY review is based on using my friends, and it seemed like a very good design. And Handspring seems to be going the right way with their handhelds; they are relatively well priced, they have good quality and support, great design, and they use the Palm OS (which is much more stable and efficient than the Pocket PC's). And I think it is good that they are doing away with the springboard slot, they are a bit too big now. Not a major drawback unless you really use a lot of them. Overall a good product, and much better priced than the Palm equivalents.

Going, Going, Goneby - June 1, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Its hard to admit, but Handspring is all but finished in this marketplace. Even their Treo 90 is miles behind Sony's latest offering, and no springboard slot? I understand the Arm architecture and the springboard architecture won't mesh, but c'mon guys your not there yet. I was a die hard Visor fan, but they've abandoned what made them great. If you wanted to take a step forward you should have created a color device that maintained the springboard slot, but also included your recently introduced SD slot. This way the SD slot could be used for memory freeing up the springboard for more imaginative modules like MP3 and GPS. That matched with Palm OS 4.1, 16mb of ram, and your thumb keyboard, it doesn't take a rocket scientist guys.

Another step backwardsby - May 30, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I used the Tro 180 for 1 month, and found it frustrating- you use the keyboard for some things, but need to have the stylus in hand and ready since the keyboard can't be the only input mechanism for all functions. If there were tons of keyboard shortcuts, I would've been happier. Also, seeing the color models, the displays aren't as good as Sony CLIEs or the Palm m515. I just bought a Sony T615C, which will be totally cool once Sony brings the Bluetooth MS here, and I can use my Ericsson T68 as a modem. Which is another bad point on the Treos- who wants to carry these geek machines around on the weekend, when you can have a small sleek phone, that's a capable modem for your PDA during the work week???

Umm... who forgot the Springboard slot?by - May 29, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The beginning of the end for Handspring. Trying to compete in the cell phone/PDA market? They are going to get their behinds handed to them. Not enough GSM coverage in the US, etc. The only thing that made them stand out in the crowded PDA market was the Springboard slot, which someone forgot to add to the Treos…

No Springboard slotby - May 28, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: It may be colour, it may have Palm OS 4.1 -- but with no Springboard slot (not to mention no wireless capabilities), what is the point of this? I may as well buy a Palm PDA....

Drop the Price or include the Cradleby - May 28, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Looks nice but Palm M130 has more colors on screen AND includes the cradle if the price was the same $279. The Treo 90 would be a no brainer but for $20 more + $50 for a cradle. Hmmmmmmmm... Still thinking....

Cradle costs $50 extra!by - May 28, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This is a great PDA. However, I'm very dissappointed that they include a USB cable only. In order to get a cradle you have to pay $50 extra! That's silly.
