The Palm TX's spacious 4-inch-diagonal display supports more than 65,000 colors and a 320x480-pixel resolution. Text and images are sharp and crisp, and you can even customize the PDA with a number of color themes. As with the Tungsten T5, there is a toolbar along the bottom edge of the screen, where you can switch between landscape and portrait mode, bring up the virtual keyboard, and turn on the wireless radio with a tap of the button, among other things. One-touch access to Home/Favorites, Calendar, Contacts, and Web is also available through the four shortcut keys below the screen. The five-way navigation toggle sits in between this quartet. Overall, the layout is spacious, and all buttons are tactile.
On top of the Palm TX are an SDIO/MMC expansion slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a power button, and a stylus holder. To sync with your PC or Mac, you can use the included multiconnector USB cable, which plugs into the bottom of the PDA. The connector for the AC adapter sits immediately to the right of the USB port; this made for a tight fit when both connectors were plugged in. If you ever need to reset your device, you can do so by pressing the button on the back of the device with a paper clip or a sharp point. Unfortunately, the battery is not user-replaceable.

Palm includes enough of the basics to get you going right out of the box. Aside from the aforementioned flip cover, AC adapter, and USB cable, you get a user guide and an installation CD loaded with an interactive tutorial and various software. Palm will offer a number of optional accessories, including Bluetooth-enabled goodies, such as a Bluetooth GPS navigation system and Palm's Universal Wireless Keyboard.
The Palm TX is well appointed in the features department. Under the hood, the TX is powered by a 312MHz Bulverde Intel processor and comes with 128MB of nonvolatile flash memory, 100MB of which is user-accessible. Not only is the amount of memory sufficient for copious numbers of contacts, appointments, and other PIM data, but you're also guarded from losing all your data if your PDA happens to run out of juice. A word to the wise: Multimedia files, such as MP3s and video clips, take up a lot of memory, so we recommend investing in a memory card or two to carry such files. The TX's expansion slot accepts up to 2GB SD cards.
Palm may have been late to join the Wi-Fi game, but we're glad it at least showed up. Even better, connecting to the Web with the TX is fast and easy. It found our test access point right away (you can also enter encryption settings for enhanced security), and after a couple of clicks, we were surfing the Web within a matter of seconds. Web pages loaded fairly quickly for a PDA, although more graphics-intensive sites took more time to upload, naturally. We also checked our Web-based Yahoo and Hotmail e-mail accounts. In addition, you can take advantage of the built-in Wi-Fi in a couple of other ways. A free service called Avvenu gives you remote access to your computer at work or home and allows you to share content with others and upload data. Although it's free, you'll need to download the Avvenu Agent to your computer before setting passwords and security options. For a more entertaining option, you can subscribe to MobiTV (check the company's Web site for subscription rates) to watch live TV right on your handheld. You can access up to 10 channels, from ESPN to MSNBC to the Discovery Channel, running at 24fps. Clearly, such tools can benefit the mobile professional, as will the built-in Bluetooth. We paired the Palm TX with the Bluetooth-enabled Dell Axim X51v and transferred contacts and appointments between the devices successfully.
On the software front, the Palm TX runs Palm OS 5.4 and includes DataViz's Documents To Go 7 and VersaMail 3.1, arming mobile professionals with the tools to work on the go. With Documents To Go, you can view and edit native Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, which is viewable only on Macs, while VersaMail 3.1 delivers your e-mail with support for up to eight e-mail accounts (POP, IMAP, APOP, or ESMTP). VersaMail also works with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, so with the help of your friendly IT department, you can connect directly to your company's Exchange server. Palm throws in a few other goodies, such as an expense program, a dialer, Solitaire, a world clock, and a calculator.
Now, let's have some fun, shall we? To fulfill your entertainment jones, the Palm TX comes equipped with Pocket Tunes for listening to your favorite tunes, as well as podcasts. Pocket Tunes supports MP3, WMA (requires Deluxe edition), PCM WAV, and Ogg Vorbis music files. You can create and edit play lists, shuffle songs, and customize the look of your player with different skins. One of our favorite tricks was to use Pocket Tunes for setting music as background while we displayed a slide show of our photos. It's a cool way to show off your latest snapshots with friends and family, but it's also great for mobile professionals who want to share relevant images with clients and coworkers.
The Palm TX performs quite well, thanks in part to the 312MHz Intel processor. There was only the slightest pause when we switched between applications; it was a noticeable improvement from the sometimes-sluggish performance of the Tungsten E2. Video playback and music playback were clean and smooth, and we were impressed by the sound quality and volume levels of the handheld. As with the most recent batch of Palm PDAs, battery life for the TX was good. In CNET Labs' tests, where we looped a video clip using Kinoma Video Player and set the screen at 50 percent brightness, the PDA ran out of juice after 4.5 hours. This isn't bad, but the results did fall behind those of the Tungsten T5 and Tungsten E2. Playing music on a repeated loop, the Palm TX lasted a longer 10 hours.

Awesome, fun, and useful
Pros: Speaker, audio jack, speed, SD card slot, WiFi accessibility (don't use it yet), securtiy, OS, screen, nice hardware. Great overall unit.
Cons: This would get 5 stars, but Palm is losing popularity.
Updated on Aug 7, 2010Great PDA.

Have found it works quite well within its limitations.
Pros: Screen, SD card, bluetooth, WiFi, Works well with my Mac OSX, Rhino case protects it from daily use/abuse. Blazer browser is OK
Cons: After a few years of constant use, had to replace the battery and eventually the digitizer. (Short Tronics, Inc. has very reasonable and fast repair service). I had the switch changed as preventive measure when the digitizer was upgraded.

Not worth the money, have had 3 all failed
Pros: Do not like anything about the product
Cons: Have had 3 Palm TX's all developed problems after a while, bad battery life, on/off switch failures, WiFi failures. Units just died. Shut off unit would not come back on, had to reset.

Palm has dropped the service ball on this PDA
Pros: Great PDA has done great for the last four years
Cons: Not compatible with Windows 7 and Palm doesn't want to solve the problem. They are putting their efforts in Phone PDAs. which means I ain't purchasing a Palm PDA in the future

Won't last more than about a year.
Pros: Excellent when it runs
Cons: Won't last more than 12 to 14 months. Had two of them, both died at just about one year, just out of warranty. No help at all from support. You are out of luck, and need to buy another one. $300 bucks a year is a bit much for this product.

Palm Tx, One Year Later...
Pros: Portability
Cons: Won't play all file types
For much faster sync, I used an sd card (2gb is recommended) and not the cable it came with.
One of the apps I downloaded made the battery run down too fast. Removing the app took care of that.
Sometimes it wouldn't turn on. Removing and reinserting the sd card would solve that.
For what I paid it should include a real sd card, not a dummy. I thought the dummy was real at first (duh!). It should also include a waterproof holster with belt clip.
The portability is a plus! I use it in lobbies and bus stops where it's not convenient to use a hefty laptop!
Luckily, after one year I haven't needed customer support. I've heard some bad news about the short 90 day warranty and unreachable customer reps!

4 Palms later - Where's the beef - Heres The Beef!!
Pros: Great PDA, from design to features and functionality, Very reliable and stable OS. Third party apps run smoothly.
Cons: No support with 64 bit OSs, no way to HotSync the TX!
Palm provides no solution to this and indicates in their responses that there are none forthcoming, by suggesting you buy a new Palm device.
I bought the first Palm Pilot, upgraded the OS over the years and it still works, then went on to the T2, and as before, upgraded to T5 and after many upgrades and 3rd party app installs, continues to function fine.
I then went on to purchase a TX, and it worked great until I installed it on a Vista 64 OS. Following many attempts to correct the problem, I am still unable to use it with the Vista 64 OS. Numerous suggestions from blogs and support groups, which resulted in advert pop-ups and inconclusive remedies including using a Bluetooth adaptor.
No effective response from Palm to rectify this problem, including eta on new drivers is unavailable.
Perhaps, I may make a suggestion that the Research & Development along with the Promotional and Sales Departments collaborate with Customer Service as many former customers will attest and come up with a solution to resolve such instances from occurring in the future.
For now it is too late for me, a long time loyal customer, who has bought their last Palm product!

"SERVICE" INEXISTANT OR VERY DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN!
Pros: BECAUSE I LIKED THE TUNGSTEN E I HAD. NOT ANYMORE. SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH THE TUNGSTEN
Cons: I USED TO HAVE A TUNGSTEN-E ANDA COUPLE OF YEARS AGO I THOUGHT I WAS TRADING UP TO A TX! I HAD TO SEND IT BACK FOR REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY! AND IT WAS QUITE A TUG OF WAR! NOW I CAN'T CALIBRATE MY MACHINE ,THE SCREEN & THE STYLUS DON'T SEEM TO AGREE!
THIS PALM TX HAS AND STILL IS CAUSING ME LOTS OF HEADACHES
I DON'T THINK PALM IS CONSUMER FRIENDLY AND I'LL HAVE TO THINK MORE THAN TWICE TO LOOK AT A PALM PRODUCT AGAIN.

Do your research: Mad Digitizer Syndrome.
Pros: Good product if it works
Cons: Once you run out of warranty (any warranty) you will need to find what the Mad Digitizer Syndrome is, and set aside $60 dlls for repair which WILL happen.
Palm Support is really bad.
Palm Support is really bad, and at an important cost, compared to the product price.
SAVE yourself some trouble and evaluate another product.
Take it from a Palm T/X owner.
Updated on Apr 28, 2009Sorry, I said $60 dll repair, I meant at least $100 (labor + parts).

Buying from Palm online
Pros: No pros, this company misses the boat!
Cons: The Palm online store will accept your order then cancel five days later with no explaination other than the items earlier confirmed are no longer available. Terrible customer service.
Suggest customers by from a brick & morter store else buy from a professional company other than Palm!

Mutli-function Mini-laptop
Pros: It does it all-documents,, PIM, music ,e-mail, WiFi, wireless broadband (by Bluetooth to a GSM cellphone), ebooks, web-surfing. Fits in your pocket, doubles as a wallet. With three years of use, for several hours a day, couldn't be without it.
Cons: Power button can be a pain, but breathing onto it (no kidding) fixes that quick Could use updated system software, especially the browser. Palm's support has been fine on both occasions I've called them.

Horrible. DO NOT BUY THIS PALM.
Pros: When this worked, it was the best handheld out there. Great resolution, wifi, PalmOS, music, photos, word, amazing. I absolutely loved it... for the first six months.
Cons: I got the TX because I was tired of re-calibrating my Tungsten. Now I have a TX that needs to be re-calibrated but requires a reset if you even try! And writing on the screen is useless now. I basically can't use my TX anymore.
This is my fourth different model of Palm Pilot in ten years. And I have always been loyal to the brand and the OS. My last was a Tungsten and I decided to move to another model when I became tired of re-calibrating the screen every time I turned it on to use it.
THIS IS SO MUCH WORSE! I can barely use it now, and rarely do. The screen needs to be recalibrated badly, but whenever I try I go through the loop endlessly and eventually have to do a reset (and the screen isn't fixed). In addition, the screen itself is not sensitive to the pen anymore. I try to draw one letter and get several letters and a few periods. It really is useless. I've only had it for a year and a half.
I'm absolutely disgusted by this, especially now that I've realized that these problems aren't unique to me. It seems these are problems with the TX that are frequently encountered by other users. And Palm has been quiet.
After 10 years, I'm doing the unthinkable. I am going to purchase an iPAQ. I never thought I was capable of giving up my Palm OS, but after two models that were substandard, I have no choice. I need a handheld that WORKS.

Battery life is a serious financial pitfall.
Pros: It has some good features if the completing power supply works ok.
Cons: The rechargeable battery can really be expensive.
out of 321 user reviews
Great in 2005, no so great in 2008-2009
Pros: Wifi, bluetooth, many application for palm OS out there, sync with outlook, can play mp3s and videos
Cons: No support for Vista 32/x64 or XP x64.
Software and hardware bugs (Memory Overflow, battery depletion)
Maximum memory supported by Tungsten TX is 2gb (Very lame)
No Multitasking
Mediocre web browsing.
Abandoned by PalmOne
Too Expensive
Internal memory can be filled easily if in PALM OS you switch from hearing mp3 songs to web browsing, this will cause the memory (ram) to be filled or overflow and the OS to crash in factory settings, If battery and palm os energy indicator are desynchronize when turned off the palm, it will not turn on, you need to a series of steps and wait up to 24/48hrs before TX can be used again.
Maximum memory supported by TX is a measly 2 gb, a shame when other competitors offer double 4gb of support. Again, this can be modified with a simple update on TX (as there are already a hack to support 4gb) but users should not hack the equipment to risk possible void warranty, Palm One is not longer looking to stabilize, patch or keep updated Tungsten TX handheld.
Browsing the internet could be better as web experience is limited by limited fonts, image and display resolution.
There is no multitasking, this means you can't browse while looking an ebook or editing a document at the same time, only 1 application will be open, the otherse will be closed.
Support only WIFI B+ (which is an old protocol not too fast of wifi) if you have newer router that transmit only in A/G/N + YOU CANNOT CONNECT TO THE ROUTER--> INTERNET WITH THIS DEVICE. Some router speed will degrade if chosen B+ to transmit wifi.
Bottom Line
The price of $270.00> is too expensive when you consider the limitation the harware and software have and the better specs and features the competition offers.
After all, what you expect of a product developed in 2005?

Palm TX: top drawer PDA
Pros: Wi-fi; Bluetooth; MS Office compatible apps; Excellent PIM apps; bright screen
Cons: No official Palm support for SDHC; touch screen can be wayward; no microphone for voice recording
The TX is an excellent piece of kit so nearly capable of serving as a laptop replacement for the majority of daily tasks (ie e-mail, web browsing and editing MS Office docs). Although lacking the 'je ne sais quoi' possessed by the iPod Touch or iPhone, the TX actually delivers considerably more functionality (think Touch = fun entertainment device, TX = daily productivity workhorse) and for all its venerable age, Palm OS 5.4 remains one of the easiest to use out of the box. Moreover, there's a zillion 3rd party apps out there. With the right blend, you could go on the road and leave your laptop at home or in the office (obviously it won't handle heavy-duty computing, but for the neccessary stuff it's more than capable).
Whoever designed the TX obviously had a lot of great ideas yet on the transition from lab to marketing dept, someone, somewhere at Palm goofed ever so slightly with the final release model. Ommission of a microphone for voice recording, opting for a 312mhz processor rather than something meatier (400? 500mhz?) and lack of vibrating alarms (as in earlier Tungstens) just knock the TX from being a really great device. Maybe its just me, but these things would make the TX really versatile.
That said, the TX remains a good option for a mobile internet device. Possessing a decent amount of screen real estate at a high resolution and brightness, browsing becomes do-able rather than bearable (even more so if you download Opera Mini). Add a BT/IRDA keyboard and you're looking at a decent laptop replacement (which is why I bought mine). Add a 2GB SD card and Pocket Tunes gives you a great MP3 player. Add an external microphone (or mod the TX yourself) and we're looking at a really nice little device.
Thanks for reading.

DON'T PURCHASE
Pros: I have used Palms for the past 15 years. This Palm should be the best PDA on the market. Screen size, resolution (320x480) wifi, Palm OS, ability to play music, movies, on and on... I loved it - when it worked.
Cons: I'm on my 7th Palm TX in 2 years!
Palms have been my life. I have loved the product. The Palm TX should have been the best product out there ? but there are some definite hardware issues ? which is so unfortunate. I have definitely given them a fair chance ? but I keep coming up with the same problem. I think I?m going to try the new Palm Treo Pro ? and go with Sprint (they have the best pricing for smartphone plans ? go compare) when my contract runs out with Verizon in 10 months. I?m hoping that by then the Palm Treo Pro with have the Palm OS available (right now it is the Windows OS).
There you have it ? make your choice. Maybe if you don?t write on it, use a keyboard, you may not have problems, but at least I have warned CNET readers ? who I have gone to so often for reviews and advice. Good Luck.
Updated on Aug 28, 2008Readers, I'm sorry for the "?". I typed my review up in Word and pasted it into the review - submitted it, CNET changed some of the characters as you can see - I hope that this won't be too much of a problem in reading my review.
Updated on Aug 28, 2008P.S. If you don't believe my review (I think owning 7 of them, and really trying to make them work would give me credibility) sort the reviews by "the lowest" reviews, and read what others say. I so badly wanted this to work - but it doesn't. Good luck.

Good features, limited durability and horrible customer service
Pros: Lots of medical applications available
Cons: Customer service is awful, browser fails to display many pages properly, power button prone to failure, screen wears out quickly
On the plus side, there are many applications available for this product. It has great potential, but doesn't live up to it.

Cons: Office 2007 compatibility will cost ya!!!

Nice device but not updated software for Vista
Pros: Great device when software updated
Cons: Needs software upgrade for Vista Computers Presently
Also Pocket Tunes software has limited use with Palm T/X. You can only play mp3 files which is a problem if you have lots of wav or wma music files. You need to upgrade to 4.0.6. Much nicer product with lots of extras. Works a lot like Windows Media Player and you can play any type of music file. This costs you another $30, however.
Now only problem is getting Calender files from Outlook 2007 to synch with Palm. I don't think software is available yet to do this with Vista.
Hope I save you Palm/Vista users lots of aggravation and time, but unfortunately not $$$$

Palm Missed The Boat
Pros: The screen is very bright, and the graphis are nice
Cons: Quite a few, Doesn't sync well, doesnt access contacts quickly unless contacts were just accessed
First, I think the Palm is overloaded on featuers. It's great that it plays video's and music except for the fact that it no longer performs basic functions, looking up a phone number for example, quickly.
To add featuers it's importiant to add them without sacraficing quality of the basic applications.
Seconed, the new grafiti is sub-par. Some of the strokes are better, but it doesn't seem to like the letter T, K, or X very well. Punctuation is also harder to use. While many users like the new grafiti, Palm should have kept grafiti 1 as an option. 3rd party software fixed this very well.
Also, while I reset my M505's and M515's maybe three or four times a year, I find myself soft resetting the TX 6 to 8 times a day. If I don't it's slow. Unfortunately this has corrupted data almost every time.
The Encryption was nice at first, until it froze while it was decrypting and I lost everything.
The dock is sub-par and don't install the update for it. It will lock up everytime you place the PDA in the cradle to charge it up.
The Bluetooth is great, needs more phone support but the palm bt keybord works well to replace my universal keyboard.
I Like the stylus overall, but they changed the composition of the tip and it doesnt seem to slide as well on the screen. Also, While the 515 required very little pressure, the TX seems to require more pressure and I worry about the integrity of the screen's membrane.
Bottom line, for a salemen who needs to be quick on his feet the old Palm's are much much better. For a college student who can sacrifice speed for featuers this is definately the gadget of a lifetime.
Palm needs to take a step back and re-discover what made their PDA's sell so well between 1998 and 2002 and get back to that.

This One Rocks
Pros: Ease of use, like what you expect from a Palm device.
Cons: The OS is aged. Upgrades to software will help. The screen/plastic case needs protection
Pocket Tunes Deluxe 4.x is a great application, and it works well on the TX including the integration with iTunes or Windows Media Player. The discounted upgrade price from the bundled version is worth it. This wi-fi enabled Pocket tunes Internet radio/MP3 Player combo is a serious competitor to the iPod Touch. Add the cradle option to your desktop computer speakers and you get a nice mini media center for video playback and photo displays as well.
Bundled applications are suitable. They add the office software capabilities like Documents to Go Pro 7, that I upgraded to the premium version 10 and the Palm OS Desktop Outlook 2005/2007 conduits that keep your business info synchronized and you get a nice PIM. Since there are some real gems for palm OS software and games, that becomes a real plus. I added a universal keyboard to make it a "portable" Palm desktop computer. The graffiti writing regonition software or screen software keyboard is adequate for taking short notes.
Lastly, I can't say enough about the Wi-Fi. It's simple to setup and use, but very capable using the WiFile application and Palm Blazer. The Palm Desktop native applications allow some business and media integration that is reasonble for a portable device. Its a real bargain when you compare it with an iPhone.
The dark (gun metal colored) plastic case and large screen are attractive but fragile. Buy a overlay protector for the screen and a quality case for PDA protection during mobile use.

Best tool/toy I ever had
Pros: Full featured; wi-fi;reliable
Cons: Screen Calibration problematic after thousands of hours
The TX has twice the memory of the Treo. No Treo can connect you to the internet without the fee to the phone company.
I've had quite a few PDA's and the TX is the best by far. I have so many features packed into mine. If I ever lost it, I'd be crippled.
I only wish these things didn't wear out after thousands of hours. (I sleep while listening to the mp3 function.) The screen calibration seems to go long before the battery dies. Then it becomes a real nuisance trying to manipulate. Like shooting with a bent barrel.

Cons: none yet, though the battery replacement is said to be a con

You can do anything with it.
Pros: Versatility, big screen, long battery life, wifi and bluetooth
Cons: Too unstable (needs a hard reset) when you install a bad program
Exploiting the versatility of the Palm is just a matter of downloading the right software. It may seem like I'm reviewing the software instead of the device itself, but the performance of a software and a device are inextricable and dynamic. I must say, that the fact that these programs are available for Palm speaks of its superiority.
1. Docs To Go 10 (latest) - Supports synchronization with the latest 2007 Office formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx.) Now, it can also read PDFs.
2. PalmPDF - (FREEWARE) It has a useful inflow rendering mode, which conveniently takes all the necessary text from the document and displays it in a convenient and neat readable format
3. MunduIM - Since this Palm has WiFi, I don't have to carry around my laptop if I need to contact people through IM (Yahoo, AOL, Jabber, ICQ) *You can also download a software that enables you to connect to IRC chatrooms, if you're interested in that.
4. Opera Mini 4 (beta) - (FREEWARE) Download this together with the IBM Java environment, and you get a browser alternative to Blazer. On rare occasions, it gets buggy. RARE occasions, let me repeat. But it can render webpages better than Blazer and it's capable of more web codes/languages.
5. PTunes - The latest PTunes allows you to synchronize with the latest Windows Media Player 10. Although the Palm memory is small, if you're not a music junkie, you can make do with a 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB SD card. Has a lot of codecs so you can play different sorts of audio.
6. Kinoma 4.1 - And if you like watching youtube videos and want your daily dose of podcasts and the like, Kinoma can connect online through your Wifi and play streaming media for you. Has a lot of codecs so you can play different sorts of videos.
7. TCPMP - (FREEWARE) This software is capable of playing large video files so you can watch movies and TV shows in your Palm. The file size has a limit though... make sure it's no bigger than 400 or 500 mb. It can play whatever format as long as you have the codec from ASF to AVI. If you have RIVA encoder in your PC, you can convert big videos to smaller manageable sizes without sacrificing quality.
I have so many games in my Palm too from the famous PopCap games (Bejewelled, Collapse, Zuma, etc.,) to 3D ones like GTS racing and Hellfire.
You can download important school references too: Noah Pro Dictionary (FREEWARE), MSDict Concise Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus and the Hatchette French-English/English-French Dictionary, PocketDict French-English/English French Dicitonary, a Periodic Table of Chem Elements, Physics Constants, a scientific and graphing calculator, a date calculator, and so much more.
If your phone has bluetooth, you can send and retrieve messages using your Palm (I do this when I want to text in class!) It has all sorts of connectivity-- even infrared, if that's still useful for you (i.e., you can download a software to turn your palm into a remote control for your TV and other electronic devices).
The best part is that it's so affordable. I personally believe that this is better than owning an iTouch by virtue of the Palm's multi-functionality.
The batter life is amazing and surprising considering that WiFi connectivity is a drain on the battery. Palm has resolved this by putting the connection "to sleep" if the connection is idle for a certain amount of time, which you can configure. Reconnecting so easy, so this feature isn't annoying at all.
Of course, you have the usual downsides, which I hope Palm can fix by making this open source or involving other software developers in improving their OS.
1. For one thing, you can't switch between software, but that's not a big issue for me. For instance, if you're logged on to YM, you are automatically logged out if you switch to a different software.
2. You can't deactivate the auto power-off option, which sucks, because freeware stopwatches can't time anything that lasts for more than 5 minutes.
3. It's too unstable when you accidentally install a bad program or perform a bad command or action. I've had to perform two hard resets in less than three months. This is so inconvenient and time-consuming even if all my software is backed up. Otherwise, you have to do a soft reset, which is still annoying, because every time that happens, I have to fix the landscape orientation of my Palm. IT DOESN'T REMEMBER IT. (I'm left-handed, so it's more convenient if the screen is rotated 45 degrees clockwise.)
4. Connected to the problem abovementioned... it doesn't remember certain preferences when you soft/hard reset it. Why won't the Palm synchronizer remember my Favorites, so that in case I need to do a hard reset, I won't have to fix it all over again?
5. In case you install something weird that you want to remove from your internal or external memory, deleting those files without connecting it to the computer is impossible. Of course, you still have to look for a Palm software to do just those, but why can't Palm integrate it into their OS? Shouldn't some kind of "file transparency" be a normal feature, since the Palm has the potential to work like a mini computer anyway?

Palm TX is the best!
Pros: Can do almost everything and does it well.
Cons: It is not also a mobile phone.
Some complain about it not having a hard drive. To me that is an advantage as inexpensive SD flash cards are much more reliable in hand held devices. I have friends that have had hard drives failures in their IPODS.

Terrible quality hardware DO NOT BUY
Pros: compact, bright screen, decent battery life, tons of programs
Cons: buggy and outdated OS, locks up, digitizer screen does not last
Once i got the "new" unit all was well for about three months...then the digitizer screen became uncalibrated, could not be aligned even with third party software i purchased, and then finally went dead again. So i've now had two palm TXs in less than the space of two years and the digitizer screen has went out on them both. My friend also recently bought a TX and his screen is becoming misaligned and is starting to go out as well...and i've read about many other people who've had units go out due to a faulty digitizer screen.
Obviously this is an endemic problem with the unit but Palm has not acknowledged it and keeps shipping the existing TXs with the very unreliable digitizer screens. Palm used to be known for quality, reliabilty and practicality but they are now a company with absolutely no pride and no innovation living off their past reputation.
They haven't released a new PDA in years, keep using a buggy and obsolete OS because they are too cheap and/or incompetent to replace it, and are shipping out shoddily made products that fail within a matter of months. The only new product they've brought out recently was the Foleo, a product virtually nobody asked for but which Palm very strangely tried to push onto the market. It is truely amazing how out-of-touch Palm is with their user base.
I would strongly advice anyone looking to buy a Palm TX based on its tempting feature set to think twice: while the specs may look good on paper, the Palm TX will eventually only look good on paper as a paperweight.

Perfect for when a laptop seems like an overkill
Pros: Beautiful screen, music, wifi, easy to use
Cons: Documents to Go doesn't work well with Vista
Palm updated many features, such as the writing area which you can choose to write anywhere on the screen, or use the designated area. The non-replaceable battery is not really an issue. I've owned four Palm Pilots, and still have an old trooper, called the i705. The gray-scale i705 was purchased in 2002, and is going strong to this very day, and doesn't have a user replaceable battery either. The TX is the first Palm that actually uses Documents To Go near flawlessly, although only with Windows XP. With Vista, it seems to revert to old DTG and I had to remove it from the system.
The music skips like a record scratch every once in a while if you are doing multiple tasks like listening to music and surfing the web. I use this thing for everything it's got. This isn't a computer, so it takes about five seconds for each web page to load in full screen. If you want speed, you can choose not to view the pictures, then it is as fast as a normal computer loading the web. I have successfully used this the TX for writing blogs and participating in forums. It is perfect for checking mail, and any other time when my laptop seems like an overkill.

Good but the battery stinks
Pros: Versitile, great screen, loaded with utility
Cons: Short battery life when using wifi; graffiti misreads
Now my battery is dead: the replacement issue is a serious drawback. Palm wants $130 to replace it, and that doesn't include shipping it to them. I would rather by an IPaq than send Palm 130 bucks for a battery.

Not perfect but still an excellent choice
Pros: Ease of use, nice screen, good apps.
Cons: Sometimes unstable
I like Graffiti 2, got used to it in no time at all. However I have one of these foldable keyboards, which I sometimes use.
My complaint is that the TX is sometimes temperamental: it'll reset for no reason and frequently lock up when I open up the browser. However, performing a soft reset is quick and painless, so what am I complaining about? I hear that windows mobile machines are no better in this respect.
I always have it with me so whenever I have to wait for something or someone I can read of watch a movie. Wouldn't leave home without it!

It runs my software so much faster than my LifeDrive did.

It makes you like your old ipaq better
Pros: It does have a pretty screen
Cons: Slow, chashes frequently, and inexorable screen death
Then came the crashes and multiple reboots always at a bad time, the glacial speed making my old slow ipaq 1945 seem zippy, and the inexorable screen misalignment just like my old Vx. No, Palm hasn't updated the screen alignment tool since the 5x, and yes, the replacement TX is already headed down misalignment road. Come to think of it, Palm hasn't updated anything but grafitti since my old 5x. Do yourself a favor, get just about anything else, this one runs like a glaciar moving downhill.

A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY!
Pros: It looks good. That's it.
Cons: It doesn't work properly. Period.
out of 321 user reviews
Fantastic, but feels fragile.
Pros: Wi-fi, Bluetooth, easy input, great screen. highly programable, lots of 3rd party programs.
Cons: Screen Scratches, Ear-phone plug shorted
The screen was not sensitive enough with screen protecting sheets, so I stopped using them. However, after about a year, the scratches on the screen began to hinder performance of the digitizer. I bought a 2rd party glass digitizer, however, and installed it. It works better than the original and was an easy install. (It does void the warranty, however, so I recommend not doing it until after the warranty has expired.
The second complaint is that the ear-phone plug shorted out so that it's impossible to hear MP-3s without pops, static, and failed stereo.
However, the Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth work great, third party software has worked well (with occasional tech support from the web), and the newer version of Graffiti works well.
If it were a cell phone, it would give the iPhone a run for its money.

Still no full drivers, not at all robust.
Pros: Visible in daylight, better battery, more memory, expansion options.
Cons: Frequent screen failure, drift, digitizing issues.
First of all, Palm still has only a beta for syncing with Vista. There is not nor will there be a beta for XP64, a fact Palm insists was "all over our site". Not the case.
The Blue Tooth sync option does work, but is fraught with challenges, most of which concern the virtual serial/com port required (tip: Do NOT try to do this without a pass key. It will not work). Blue tooth sync is slower, but it is a work around.
More of an issue are the increasing number of failing screens, as Palm TX's reach maturity. While some users report screen failure in as little as a few weeks, they seem to begin for most at about 10 months, which puts them uncomfortably close to the warranty expiration. Palm does willingly take the units in repair, but some reports indicate that the replacement models (refurbished) frequently fail within a few weeks to months, as well. There are, fortunately, third party screen suppliers, and replacing a screen although daunting is not rocket science. For more information google "digitizer problem" and Palm TX.
A further frequent screen/digitizer issue on Palm is called "screen drift" or "the Mad Digitizer syndrome", which actually applies to older models (the plastic screen, although unbreakable, is just not hardy). This shows up when getting the right button to work becomes increasingly hit and miss, as the screen reads the input off target. Resetting the device to calibrate properly results in a never ending loop of futile target tapping, as the spot hit is so far off the target that the device simply can't read the input.
There are a number of third party software fixes for this issue, which Palm attributes to third party software conflicts, although it is more likely most often an early sign of screen/digitizer failure.
Palm tends to deny these and other issues with an approach that borders on glib at times.
None the less, if you can live with the faults, the stylus input Palm with the sideways screen, on screen graffiti (data input) and the expansion options to make it a back pocket mini computer is a pretty nifty gadget. I have come to a point where I cannot live without one. My next PDA purchase, however will be preceded by a thorough search of Palm alternatives.

I love my Palm TX
Pros: Very versatile, good battery life, great for work and play, you can find many programs for the TX
Cons: It took me awhile to get use to the MP3 and video aspect of the Palm
It has a great organizer, web browsing is good (I download podcasts, check my yahoo email, look at my bank account, ect), internet radio, you can watch movies, listen to music (MP3 and others).
It may not have a hard drive but for an extra $20 (for a 1 gigabyte SD card) it's very worth it.
I have Galaxy Quest on my TX and a few shorts.

Palm Support is anything BUT!
Pros: The TX is Great
Cons: Beyond Bad Customer Service
The Palm TX is no cheap purchase, for a new one the price averages $300. I have a Palm TX still under warranty. One day it just stopped turning on, I called Palm for "support", what a joke.
I followed their instructions to the letter when I sent it in for repair; however, their online repair order status web page continues to show that it was never received. Fortunately, I had the forethought to send it by Fed Ex and require a signature; had I not done so, Palm would continue to deny they ever received it.
I have called and emailed their support many times, and after they finally admitted they received it (when I gave them the Fed Ex tracking number), they still can't tell me what is wrong with it, where it is in the repair process or when I will get it back. After already waiting two weeks, the last email from Palm says it will be another week to 10 days before I get it back, even though their website says 5-7 business days is their turn around time.
Like another reviewer that has dealt with Palm, the emails I received from them have a statement in the language at the bottom that says it cannot be reproduced on a message board, etc. If a company stands beside their product, why would they they give such a warning. I am still waiting to get my TX back, I am guessing it will be a long wait.
I really do like my TX, it is too bad that Palm's support is so bad.

Beware Vista/Office 2007 Users!
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Does not sync with Outlook 2007; Documents to Go doesn't work with Office 2007 documents
I think that the Palm is a great device, and I'll still use it independent of Outlook (using the Palm Desktop software instead), but one of the main reasons that I bought it was so that everything--tasks, contacts, calendar. I'm also disappointed that I can't put my documents onto it.

Wonderful PDA that has alot of features
Pros: Light-Weight, Bright Screen, Long Battery Life, A good amount of functions, Good WiFi and Bluetooth features, Nice Stylus, and Conveiniant Navigation System.
Cons: Link Between Computer and Palm is a bit confusing, No detailed Manual for first time users. A Little Pricey.
I do like alot of the features that the TX has, such as the 5 way navigation system, VersaMail and Web features. Overall the PDA is built very stable and is light-weight, and the screen is very nice. Somethings that I don't really like is the fact that the link between computer and PDA is somewhat confusing and unstable, but it works. Overall this PDA is a great and it works the way I need it too, it is a bit pricey but if you can afford it, then I say, go for it.

Has almost everything a computer has
Pros: WiFi and excellent MP3 player with all the features of a Palm
Cons: Made mistake of buying it a Circuit City
Here is my problem and it has nothing to do with Palm. I bought the Circuit City Extended warranty. After 6 months, the left channel would sometimes not work. I took it to CC and they send it off and said it wasn't covered because (fill in the blank here). I had to talk with 5 or 6 people and they all had different reasons for not fixing it. Fine, it still worked, but couldn't use the MP3 player unless I held the headphone jack just right.
Then, a year and a half later, the battery quit charging. I called CC. They take down all of my information and put me on hold for 27 minutes and 32 seconds (I've got one of those kinds of phone). Guy comes back after wasting a half hour of my life and tells me I dialed the wrong number. Thanks Circuit City!
The features on the Palm TX are great. The first one I had, the left channel worked intermittently after about 9 months. My "complete coverage extended Circuit City warranty" does not cover this or, pretty much any other malfunction, I painfully found out. Also, the digitizer constantly needed to be reset. I bought another one without the warranty from Best Buy and the screen eventually died on that one. Palm websites state that the digitizer on the TX is an issue and I need to replace it with a $100 part. yay.

soul-sucking lousy......
Pros: uh...the screen is nice
Cons: NO help at all
First, let me say that I am no technogeek and that's why I wanted a palm instead of a laptop. I want easy. I want simple. I want something that comes out of the box and does all the stuff that the outside of the box says.
It says it has an MP3 player...as far as I can tell you might possibly get it to play music but first you have to buy an expansion card and you have to buy an upgrade to PocketTunes. Well, my 90 dollar MP3 player works just fine and before I spend that kind of money on my TX I'll just go to Future Shop and spend another 90 on another MP3 player, thank you very much.
Um...it comes with a silly little plastic flip top which obviously doesn't protect it at all. I sprung for the 60 dollar hard case which turns out to be extremely slippery and also covers up the stylus. So, I covered it in little sticky things you get from the grocery store which gives it a lovely RedGreen vibe.
It says it can download documents but I tried to download a PDF file and it won't take it...possibly because I never purchased the expansion, but possibly because it won't take PDF files.
I tried to download a game but after hours of clicking I'm still no closer...At one point it wanted my Hotsync number and my Palm, once I'd gone to the page it said, didn't actually have any number at all where the page said it should be. Now it thinks I'm in the States (I'm in Canada) and I can't get my address changed...I can't seem to contact anyone...there's no help button anywhere on even the Palm store...it's super frustrating.

Cons: No home button on status bar.
I love this unit, although unfortunatly my screen got broken today. It is a great multimedia device, even though it is marketed toward buisness users. I put hundreds of songs and some movies on expansion cards which by the way are becoming very cheap. I hope that palm does not drop this unit unless something even better comes out.

Excellent product with worrisome reliability
Pros: Does everything its supposed to do
Cons: Infrequently crashes for no reason
However, in the nearly 11 months I've owned one, it has crashed three times for no reason at all. By crash, I mean it resets with complete loss of data for no reason at all. Its fairly easy to reboot the unit at home since I back up my Palm regularly with the easy to use software, but for the few hours between the crash and my return home its useless. In this state it starts up only to restart upon touching the screen.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CRITICAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS HEALTH CARE OR EXTENDED TRAVEL AWAY FROM BACK UP SOURCE.

Great Overall PDA Workhorse!
Pros: Wifi, Ease of Use, Applications
Cons: A Little Buggy Out-Of-The-Box
The wi-fi is extremely useful. I can e-mail, browse the Web, and even sync the TX from anywhere in my apartment, without having to have a laptop there. At first I didn't realize how much I'd appreciate the wi-fi, since my desktop is right here, but it's nice to be anywhere in the apartment and be able to check e-mail. Going out for a walk today, I noticed how many open networks there are, and I was actually able to check my email while I was going down the street.
Of course, it's not all pluses. Versamail (the e-mail client) refused to work for me until I deleted and reinstalled it. And the Blazer web browser would crash on me until I deleted my bookmarks file and reinstalled it. I was a little disappointed in those things, but once I got them resolved, I was all aces.
Well, I've been living with this for a while now. For the most part, I'm still happy, but there are a few bugs that still need to be worked out. VersaMail is kind of hit and miss. And if you try to get a fix on a weak WiFi signal (or one that suddenly fades away) the Palm will reset, rather than just disconnecting.
I still think this was a good purchase, though, and deserves a solid 7. Wifi in my area is plentiful, so it makes this device really handy.

Pros: Large screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Sd Card, Mp3, and Video capable, Mobile Office.
Cons: There are no cons.
If you are going to be doing a lot of email or word documents I suggest that you get a palm wireless keyboard to go along with it.

Replaced my iPaq with this and am pleased
Pros: Easy to use, built in WiFi, SD card slot, Mac compatible
Cons: I have no complaints at this time.
The day after purchasing my TX, the unit stopped working. The touch screen was unresponsive to the stylus and after phoning Palm and doing what they told me to do they decided that the unit was defective and told me to return it and get a new one. At this point I was wondering if I made a mistake by going with a Palm but after returning the defective unit and getting another one I have had no problems.
I found setting up the Palm Desktop software to the Mac to be extremely easy. Syncing info from the Desktop application to the TX is also simple. You just hook up the cable and press the button on the cable and you are ready to go.
I immediately found the Palm OS on the device itself to be even easier to use than the Windows Mobile OS that was on my iPaq. I know they came out with a few different Windows operating systems since the one on my iPaq came out so perhaps the new ones are easier to deal with than the one I had. Since I do not know I can't say that this operating system is easier to use or better than the newer Windows Mobile operating systems.
I find the internet browser to be excellent and find it to be much quicker than I thought it would be. I had to add a wireless card to my iPaq and it was annoying to connect and get it to work. It was also much slower to bring up web pages than the TX is. The web pages I have gone to come up very quickly. I also like the way you can switch the screen to go wide with a click on a tab on the screen. I tend to stay in PDA friendly web sites since regular web sites take a lot longer to load which I believe to be the case with any PDA with internet access.
I had read a previous preview of this item in which someone had said that in order to get capital letters you had to click on the "ABC" on the bottom of the screen and to get to lower case you had to click on "abc" on the bottom of the screen. This is true if you want to stay locked on upper case or lower case letters but if you stay in the lower case field and use the shift button it goes to upper case letters for one letter and then converts back to lower case. When you are locked in upper case letters the shift tab will bring you to lower case letters and then convert back to upper case. The review he had written about the TX had me close to thinking about getting a different unit since he said the web pages loaded slow and mentioned many other things that he did not like. I only mention this to let people know that they should not just read a few reviews but to read a lot of them and find a store with a display where you can try the unit for yourself. Many people use PDAs for many different things so one that is good for some people may be junk for others. I use mine generally for personal use and for a small business just to keep track of appointments, to do lists, tasks, inventory and shipping reminders for when I am not able to be at my computer and I find the TX to be perfect for what I need it for.
I personally find the TX does everything I need a PDA for quickly and easily and I find the battery life to be very good as well. I use it very often throughout the day and plug it in before I go to sleep each night. I have not had it go under 30% power after a full day yet.
I hope my review might help someone in deciding what PDA they should purchase and wish everyone good luck with whatever unit they decide to purchase.

Outstanding PDA with great functionality. The WiFi ability really puts this unit over the top.
Pros: Big screen, great graphics, Multi media capability and wireless
Cons: Palm does not support quite a few newer versions of Windows, a problem Palm seems determined to ignore.
To put this device in perspective, my first computer was a TRS-80 COCO 1 with 4k of RAM and Extended ASCII graphics. Programs were loaded in with either a cartridge or an audio cassette. I believe my father paid $399 for this computer. Technology has sure come a long ways.
The Plam TX is great coming with a good stable of Applications out of the box. Documents to go, Adobe Reader, Ptunes (mp3 player), WiFileLT (a stripped down version that will allow you to use a wireless network connection to read files off of your PC), Versa Mail (an email client), Blazer web browser, a Media viewer, a solitaire game, and the usual contacts, calendar, notepad, to do list, and memo pad apps, give this device a lot of uses right out of the box. When you add in the numerous freeware utilities available for download, this device can become a powerfull tool.
The blazer web browser does fairly well, though a lot of pages tend to be hard to work with on the palms small screen. Still, my computers power supply died not long after purchasing this device, and I was able to use the web browser to buy a new one from Fry's web site with no problems, so the browser does get the job done. Though large web pages will be truncated, or may not even load due to the 128 MB memory limitation.
The versa mail client again is a useful app that allows one to wirelessly access their e-mail. The only headache I run into with this is that some of my online groups daily digest emails can get cut off due to memory limitations if the discussion gets to verbose.
The included multimedia viewer is somewhat limited in what formats it will display, but the picture and audio are good, it would have been nice if Palm would've included a media ripper to convert formats over to a Palm acceptable one optimised for the TX's screen. Another nice feature of the TX is the ability to switch from portrait to landscape mode using the device, which allows web pages, e-mails, media, and other programs to display in whichever method the user feels is best.
Another interesting change from other Palm devices is the lack of a "silk screen" area for Graffiti input. Instead it is drawn on the screen graphically, and the user can hide the Graffiti area when not in use to allow more screen area for whatever program is in use. As an added touch, there is a button on the status bar that will allow you to use graffiti anywhere on the screen without a silk screen area.
As for connectivity, this device has it all, with a USB sync cable, an IR port for talking to older palms. Bluetooth that can be used to talk to palms, cell phones, computers, GPS devices (which you can add a moving map display program to your Palm to take advantage of), or any number of other items. It also had an 802.11b wireless interface to allow you to network and hotsync to a computer, or to connect directly to the Internet.
The only real downfall to this device (and the reasone I didn't give it a 10 rating) is Palms stubborn refusal to support any OS newer than Windows XP. This means if you have Windows XP media center, Windows XP tablet edition, Windows XP x64, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista, your on your own. As I own Windows XP x64, this leaves me stuck. Fortunately, my old Sony Desktop for my Clie installed no problem, and I was able to hotsync over my wireless network using that, so it wasn't a major hassle.
Overall, if you are looking for a PDA with WiFi capabilities, this is probably your cheapest option. Fortunately it's a strong one, and with the great degree of online support, freeware, and shareware from Palm enthusiasts, this device will most likely suit anyones needs for a PDA. The best advice I can give anyone before buying any PDA is to a) go to a store where they have a few models on display and play with some to get a feel for them and b) surf the web, find out what kind of programs are available for the various models and see which one suits your needs the best.

Exceeded my expectations
Pros: Screen, versatility.
Cons: Even though battery life is decent, it is not replaceable.
Once I actually got the TX (around four months ago) and started playing with it, I found that, in addition to working very well for ebooks, thanks to its large and bright screen, it could actually replace my laptop in some cases. I can (and do) use it for email, web browsing, writing documents, scheduling, note taking, music, and even watching movies. I'm still exploring its abilities, and I keep finding new useful things to do with it.
One of the things that has made this unit incredibly useful is that I can connect to the internet using my Bluetooth enabled phone. The speeds aren't anything to brag about, but I basically get the functions of a smart phone, but with a huge screen and a tiny phone.
I should note that I've spent quite a bit of money on accessories (including SD cards and an IR keyboard) and software for this PDA, but I've found it to be worth it. Just realize that you might need to invest more than $300 to get the most use out of it.
My main complaint is that the battery is not replaceable. I can get a couple of hours of use out of it if I'm careful, but that's not long enough to, say, check my email at the airport and then watch a movie on the flight. It would be nice to be able to get a second battery, along the lines of what mobile phones use.

Not if you are a Mac user, and NOT if you like customer service.
Pros: Good for leveling table legs.
Cons: Many applications do not sync on the Mac
When I called Palm for help, there was none to be had. I suppose I could have paid the $25 help fee to be told that many Palm applications do not work on the Mac, and then spent hours online downloading plug-ins and shareware to fix it.
For $300 I felt that the applications that come with the Palm TX should work with minimal tweaking.

Teachers! There is an easier way to grade!
Pros: Device seems ok.
Cons: Support can be frustrating
I bought the PDA TX- in itself it has been great, no problems. I have hot synched dozens of applications. Even books- Like any other teacher I never thought that I would read a book from anything other than paper. I was wrong. I miss the smell of paper, but I don't miss the weight in my backpack. All kidding aside, its an easier transition than you might think.
(Hint-change the screen color to your choice)
I'm a science teacher. All my life I have been accused of carrying too much stuff around. I hate carrying stuff around. On my tx, I have my gradebook, attendance, calculator, calender, reference books ,a dictionary, plus the sports news or leisure novels when we have one of those ridiculous faculaty meeting, etc.
If you do get one make sure of two things: you get the two year warranty(just to be safe), and you hotsynch every other day.
Make sure that you go to the Pref's button and lower lower the sceen brightness, and turn off the Wifi/bluetooth stuff. These actions will prolong your battery time.
It was worth it to me.

Excellent all around device
Pros: MS Office compatible, Wifi and Bluetooth, fast, reliable
Cons: no multitasking
Multitasking would be nice in some situations but the T|X is fast enough that switching between apps is quick and painless. It also allows the device to use all of its resources to run the current app instead of running both at the same time.
The included DocumentsToGo software provides MS Office compatibility and includes many features that even Microsoft's own Pocket Office suite doesn't include. Documents open reliably and fairly quickly.
The screen is beautiful, rivaling any device out there for color depth and detail. Even works great outside. Internal memory is more than adequate for most uses and the SD card support provides for up to 2GB of space.
Music playback has a little bit of noise in the background, but sounds good overall especially from the built-in speaker.
I recommend the T|X to anybody who needs a well rounded and fully functional PDA without the smartphone bells and whistles (just the way I like it).

Pros: Simplicity of Palm
Cons: Poor customer service, screen makes an awful noise
It seems to be getting worse as the device gets older. Just recently I determined that I can't stand it any longer and I wanted to send it in for repairs. It turns out that I just missed the end of my warranty and to send it in to Palm for repairs would cost over $129.
I find Palms poor performance in satisfying a customer here disappointing.
This will likely be my last Palm product just due to the principle of the matter.

Pros: Nice screen, fast enough
Cons: Can't sync reliably with Media Center XP

Great Palm Device
Pros: Wi-fi, ease of use, syncing is easy
Cons: Why did they change graffiti?
The wi-fi is great. It was the only way my wife and I had internet access on our honeymoon, and it worked perfectly. The battery didn't even get sucked down as fast as I thought it would when the wi-fi was on.
The media portion is good. You can view pictures and video easily.
For some reason, the braintrust at palm decided to change some of the graffiti characters a while back. Before, a vertical line down was an "i". `Now, you have to draw a vertical line and a dot above it for the "i". This is just one example of the characters that changed.
If this doesn't bother you, you may be looking at a winner.
Hope you like it!

Good PDA -IF- you don't hit problems...
Pros: Great screen; good features; good battery life
Cons: Power button stops working; support difficult to get
About after only ONE week of having it, the power button stopped working. I went to the Palm website and found that their very own forums are littered with tons of people having problems like this. With no solution for fixing it.
It is extremely difficult to find any help from the actual support team to the point where it feels like the only support I can get is from other customers.
While browsing the forums, I read about another problem common in the T|X and in about two more weeks, it happened to me. Sometimes when using the T|X, it just dies on its own. No warning..no error..it just shuts off.
It's extremely disappointing to see such problems happening in a device that costs so much with Palm making no effort to remedy them.
If you're lucky enough to get a T|X without any problems, this PDA is everything you need it for but if you head over to their forums, you'll see that these problems run much more rampant than you'd like to bet your money on.

Zero for Two with TX
Pros: Great to have Wi-Fi AND Bluetooth
Cons: Customer Support is Lacking
Three days later it died. Tried charging it over night and doing a soft and hard rest. Nothing would bring it back to life.
Tech Support said I had to contact the Palm Store to get a new one. They did not even try to help me bring it back to life. The Palm Store charged me again for a new one. I am still waiting for a Return Authorization. I am now $600 in the hole and have not been able to use a PDA.
New TX came in two days. Charged it up for 3 hours and right after I synched, it died.
Again called customer support and gave me a half hour run around to return the second TX.
I am never going to buy a Palm again. It's too bad, because I have always liked thier products.

A fitting replacement for my beloved T5
Pros: Bluetooth (necessity) WiFi (don't use it myself but..) email and browser
Cons: Can't change the battery myself - this is a BIG downer
That used to annoy me because 50% of sync's I did caused a Fatal Error - the PDA equivalent of Microsofts blue screen of death!
I havn't had one Fatal Error with the TX, so that's a big plus. There's nothing worse than juggling a handbag, Laptop, brolly and PDA on public transport and then having to take your stylus apart to reset!
But there's 2 things I wish Palm would consider.
1. Let us change our own batteries please... I'm sick of having to pay Palm to change a damned battery. My cellphone company thinks I'm smart enough to change the battery in my Cellphone, so what's so special about Palm that we users can't change our PDA batteries?
and the other one,
2. Give us a choice between Palm OS and Windows! There are aspects of Palm OS that's terrific, but I'd like a choice. I think if Palm were a little more flexible with the OS they offered, they'd blitz the market.

My experience with Palm TX
Pros: WI-FI and applications
Cons: Accessories
Over the years I have had four Palms and the TX is by far the best.
The WI-FI is extremely fast and stable. The apps I use extensively with it are: Versamail (no problems at all, read and send Gmail and my company mail at same time); Blazer (infrequent crashes); and Quickipedia (a dream come true...). I found the WI-FI extremely simple to set up, having even used it to read my mail in shopping centres in France! A few months ago I tried configuring my brother-in-law's HP IPAQ, but couldn't get it to work - it was too complicated.
The screen is very clear with high definition. I have loaded photos of the kids and am impressed by the quality.
Also Docs To Go does everything I want for editing office documents, and all the other classic Palm software is even better than usual.
Against the TX:
I literally hated Graffiti 2. However, luckily I have managed to find a replacement (see http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=5830 - make sure that you follow the instructions for the Palm TX otherwise you're in trouble).
As usual with Palms I find it extremely irritating that there is no backwards compatibility with the accessories. Why does Palm have to keep on changing the shape of pens; the cradles; USB chargers, etc, etc. If it's to make a few more bucks from unwary customers then I find it simply insulting. If they want to build a solid and HAPPY customer base they should at least provide for some sort of adapters so that we don't throw away money every time we upgrade to a new device. They should also make it clear from their marketing literature what it means to upgrade from one model to another - what is compatible and what isn't. Also it wouldn't cost Palm any more to provide a decent case. The TX comes with a flimsy screen cover that will wear out in no time.
Overall:
All in all I am very pleased with my new Palm, which is as stable as I need (and better than previous models). My only real gripe is with the accessories.

DO NOT BUY THIS HANDHELD!!!
Pros: Nice screen.
Cons: Everything else.
I am about to give an honest opinion and warning to anyone who wants to buy this. I have had a miserable experience from all angles. Usage and support from palm has been a disaster.
The handheld was technically working when I got it from Amazon. I was able to load my calendar and contacts in from Outlook. However, the web ability is terrible and the ability to gain an IP address dynamically is very poor. (Don't just trust my experience, search that on the web and you will find multiple issues.) So, I had to hard code an IP every time I wanted online.
However, things soon got much worse. The palm pilot one night, just froze, and then started rebooting itself continuously. I couldn't even turn it off. Just reboot-reboot-reboot. It finally wore out of batteries (overnight.) Low battery life is another complaint, but one that pales in comparison to the others.
So, I call Palm for support. On hold for 45 minutes. Line gets cut. I call back and get a rep. After giving her the serial number, line gets cut again. To her credit, she called me back and said that they have numerous problems with their phone system. The whole call she could barely hear me, and I had to repeat information over and over.
The only advice she had was that we wipe the handheld clean, erasing all information. While that might work, this is less than 90 days old, and is a complete piece of junk. I wanted a refund (honestly, I know they can do it.) They refuse to refund any money, they refuse to exchange for a new identical model. They will only erase, and hope that it doesn't happen again, although they give no reason that it might have happened in the first place.
Again, don't just take my word. Search online for the Palm T|X rebooting infinitely. It is a common problem. If you buy this, make sure you back up everything everyday, and just get ready to erase and reload the handheld often.
Please save yourself the $200-300 that you'd spend on this and search out another company doing a similar thing. You'll be much happier.

Not that good
Pros: Big Screen
Cons: Bluetooth supported on Cingular and T-moble
2. Bluetooth is only supported on a few phones from Cingular and T-Moble - I could never get bluetooth to access email and the web via my Sprint service - forget Palm's support - they don't have a clue!
3. Problems with Docs -to-go and versamail - crashed the Palm and reboots without warning.
4. All batteries die - this battery can not be replaced without sending the unit back to the factory.
I would not recommend it -

However I had problems trying to connect the Palm T/X with my mobile phone, Palm has not been great in updating drivers so that I can make quick phone calls through my Palm. Maybe I should just get a Treo, but I think the Palm T/X was worth the money...it just depends on what you need to have done.

The best PDA I have ever encountered.
Pros: WIFI, Bluetooth, Lots of 3rd party applications, Palm OS
Cons: Screen Whine, Not enough memory, Auto-reboots quite annoying, Bluetooth phone support limited
Whenever I get a new toy, I like to bring it to its full potential. This includes installing 3rd party applications to perform functions that don't come with the Palm. I install more games, more applications like dictionaries, and other things.
Before I go any further, the Palm has built in 128mb of memory, which is plenty for 3rd party applications. However, once I fill about half of the memory, the Palm starts slowing down drastically. I think that it should have its own little dedicated memory for RAM. Once you have too many programs installed, it starts auto-rebooting all the time.
I still rate this a 9 because I'm not sure if it's at the fault of the programmers of the 3rd party programs or if it is a fault of the Palm TX, because I know 3rd party programs can be coded quite inefficiently. If I just install a few things that I need (like financial software and pocket dictionary and only one or two extra games), the Palm works like a charm.
One more thing I have to complain is the screen whine. There's a 3rd party program I use to eliminate the screen whine just by checking the option "Eliminate Screen Whine." If it's that easy, why does the screen whine exist in the first place? It's been pretty apparent in previous versions of Palm and Tungsten models, so I don't really know what's up there.
In conclusion, in the past half year that I've had it, I've used it every day and it is very useful for keeping my life together. It works exactly as I need it, granted I don't try to stretch its limits with 3rd party programs, although I wish I could just use up more than half its internal memory and not have to worry about it slowing down. I wish it had a separate memory chip dedicated for RAM, but it seems it also uses the 128mb internal memory for such purposes.

On the filp side you may find it to be the perfect form of grace and intellect since an elite user can spend a lot of quality time unlocking the power that palm has hidden from you.
My biggest gripe and really only true gripe is the web browser that is bundled with the palm. Blazer 4.3 is a fast and near-friendly browser. But forget streaming anything from flash to video to even opening a pda doc. The beauty is that dedicated palm users are always finding ways to improve palms own software. Blazer 4.5 which is suppose to append all those lost features is not available as of yet (and maybe never) for palm os 5.4 Garnet. Now I know that there are people working to remedy this, which is great for me, since I bought one. Meaning they are trying to make Blazer 4.5 available to all palm 0S 5 users, and not just palm treo users.
I did own a ipaq 1945 about two years ago. This device (the Palm TX) is much better. And from what I have read, there hasnt been any great strides made in the pocket pc, and to find a similar pocket pc will cost you around 399, where as the Palm TX retails at 299. I dont know if the browser on a pocket pc is that much better, but I do know this, its not worth $100 bucks to stream video to my palm.
Get this device if you need one for the next year or two. I cant see how things will improve in the pda world much more than what this pda offers (bluetooth, wifi, screen-size). Its attractive and under its hood is a power machine, you just have to know how to untap that power.
Lastly, if you are a business of school used or just plain organised, this device it the creme of the crop for you and you will find it to be the perfect companion. However you could save yourself some money and lose the wifi and screen size and get a tungsten E2 for about $100 less.

Good all around PDA
Pros: Fast web surfing, sleek design, good battery life, better webpage viewing because you can make the page landscape, and a vibrant screen that actually is better than my laptop
Cons: you need to buy a SD card to store stuff, sometime it randomly restarts, and you HAVE to connect it to a PC to use most of the features on it

Cons: set up was a pain, but that is the same with any PDA

Awesome PDA!
Pros: Fast, reliable, wifi and bluetooth, long battery life
Cons: Screen hard to see outside, no voice recorder
The TX responds to your actions very quickly, however when you first starting using it the graphiti text input system is a bit quirky. You get used to it after a while. You can also set it to a touch screen keyboard if that suits you better. The keys are really really small though. The battery life lasts a long time for the amount I use it, and it charges very quickly. The bluetooth is nice because I can HotSync without fumbling with a cable, and the Wi-Fi is great since my college has a campus-wide Wi-Fi network so I can whip this out of my pocket and check my email real quick, and not have to sit down and lug out my laptop.
My only cons are the fact that it doesn't come with a voice recorder, which would be helpful for a college student like me, though it's not important enough to spend more money on another gadget. Also, I've found the screen slightly hard to see when trekking across campus in the sun. I have to stop under a tree or go inside a building to see it properly.
Other than a few gripes, the Palm TX is a great device and I would definately recomend it.

My best electronic friend & partner
Pros: Does everything I need
Cons: Poor connectors
Bottom line, if I were stranded on a deserted island and could bring one thing for entertainment, I'd pick my Palm TX (assuming an inexhaustible battery, of course). If my house caught fire, I'd get my wife & kids, cat, and Palm out, in that order. The only complaint I have about this loyal sidekick is that the connector slots for the Hotsync and AC adapter (whether using a cradle or the included cables) seem weak and flimsy; you never know for sure if they're in properly, and you do seem to have to yank a bit to remove them. A small gripe for an otherwise perfect instrument; I look forward to many more years with this beauty in my pocket.

Great features and very useful, but...
Pros: Wi-Fi access is great, Addit Software is cool and useful, and the Documents to Go Program included is an added bonus. The screen is another great feature, the best I've seen so far.
Cons: Battery cannot be replaced by the user, syncronization with Outlook does not include email, Bluetooth connectivity is difficult at best.
Beware of a few negative aspects of this device though. It does not syncronize with Outlook's email, although it does get your contacts, memos, calendar, and tasks. It tries to get email with each hotsync by using Palm's VersaMail program, which does not access a gmail account this way (I can only download my messages from gmail if I use the wireless network). Also, the Bluetooth connectivity with my PC is a nightmare. I have tried three bluetooth adapters, spent over six hours, and 90 dollars trying to get this to work with my PC and have failed miserably. When trying to get help with this I could not, especially since the TX does not come with a WRITTEN, TANGIBLE USER MANUAL! The CD has a user guide on it, but this was not effective and neither was Palm's website. It appears that Widcomm drivers are incomplete. Perhaps I have bought the wrong adapters or maybe I should wait for better ones. Beware of this if you are buying the TX for bluetooth connectivity. Trust me, you do not want the headache and waste of time I experienced.
Otherwise, this is a fine piece of equipment. It does what it is designed to do, for the most part. I am happy with it and will probably wait for better bluetooth adapters and software.

Palm does it again but...
Pros: nice bright large screen size w/ web capabilties and more
Cons: slow 802.11b technology, slow processor, does not run all previous palm softwares
PS: Does anyone know how to load DVD movies onto the Palm TX and watch it using the landscape mode? Movies watched on my friend's iPod look so awsome. Are movies seen on Palm come close? Please help...

Nearly the perfect PDA
Pros: Loaded with features, very sensitive WiFi and Bluetooth, Super-size screen
Cons: Takes some time to learn, quirky synchronization
I had some problems loading the extra software, and there's plenty of it but the best for my purposes is Data Viz's Documents to Go. Handy when I leave my work computer and go home to my home computer. Moving from the old Palm format to the new one was both a curse and a blessing. Setting up the synch took a while and is a little quirky but worth the hassle, as the TX has a much better format.
I stayed away from the Life Drive because of concerns over the internal hard drive and its ability to hold up. I also passed up the Treo because of the Treo's much smaller screen. After using my Visor as a phone, I was convinced I did not like the two combined.
The TX user manual comes on the CD, and with good reason: It's a whopping 700 pages long! I'm sure Palm put it on CD rather than print it out because of the costs involved.

Best from Palm Yet
Pros: wifi, bluetooth, large display, and size
Cons: bluetooth doesn't work with all phones.
For me there is only one negative. Bluetooth doesn't work with all cell phones. I have Samsung A640 (blue tooth phone) and I cannot get the two to work.
If you are looking for an all-in-one device that will keep you organize and entertain (MP3 playing capability) this is the device for you. If you want a PDA that will connect through bluetooth with your phone, visit Palm website.

The Best so far...
Pros: hi-resolution, wifi
Cons: no built in microphone
i have been a palm user from palm 3c, m505 to all in one Treo 600 and now with TX. i found palm os the best. it's a worry free for everyday life.
the only concern with TX is with the blazer browser, it is very slow to load. but a soft reset before surfing solves the problem.
hope an update will be released from palm.

The One to Own!
Pros: Large Screen, Features Set, Value
Cons: No Camera, Poor Speaker
I've considered upgrading my Motorola 3Vc and Palm Vx to the new Treo 700p in lieu of purchasing a Razr and Palm T/X. After much fiddling I've come to the conclusion separate devices are the best solution.
The Palm T/X?s larger screen is a huge plus! After working on a smaller palm screen this is a hard thing to pass on (like moving from a 15? to 23? lcd screen). I also wasn?t crazy about becoming a member of Treo?s thumb tribe versus calling up the pull-up keyboard on the T/X display screen. Another great feature of the stand-alone T/X was the landscape mode, which is superior at displaying web pages especially when the font is reduced. As for the organizer I found the Treo's on-screen contact directory cumbersome as it displays every phone number in each contacts entry. This display format consumes far too much screen real estate making an A-Z scroll painful. In addition the contact names appear above the phone number consuming an additional screen line. The T/X contact format of 1 name and phone number per line all aligned with drill down capability just a click away is far more efficient. Admirably, the Treo 700p built-in phone and camera are great features but not enough to sway me over. Possibly Palms next-gen Treo will package everything as well as these 2 stand alone devices. Only then may I be wiling to compromise loosing my cell phone when my Palm dies or worse yet having to stop what I?m working on and change functions to answer the phone.

Cons: Metal casing vice plastic; power button on top
I really like this PDA because of all the features included and its design. I still prefer the Sony Clie top end models, but they are no longer being made. That said, there is simply nothing else out there running the Palm OS that is more functional than this.

Cons: Problems, problems, POOR Palm support

Very fine business tool and tech toy!
Pros: Big Sharp Screen- Good WiFi & Bluetooth- Great Multimedia Features as PVP and MP3 player-Excellent Application App's.
Cons: Internal non-replaceable battery (though mine holds a charge better than any of the 3 palms i have owned)- New Garnet OS is beyond compatability of my prev TungstenE apps and mult crashes till elimin
I mentioned the battery isn't replaceable, but that said it holds a charge better than any PDA I have owned to date. Also, if you are upgrading from an older PALM OS from a current palm, you may have crashes trying to sync old progs (3rd Party apps mostly) Save yourself some aggravation and sync important contacts etc. to Outlook, then try syncing up, if you have crashes eliminate all the 3rd party programs necessary until it runs fine. Kind of a pain, but better than the trial and error I dealt with. The accessories that came with it were OK, but the hard case latch lasted about 3 weeks before breaking on me as I am in and out of my palm/case at least 2 dozen times a day. Do yourself a BIG favor and get the COVERTEC leather folding case (they have a website you can order from direct if you google or .com after their name)it has a rugged belt/swivel clip that is on for life (the similar Belkin flip case I had broke the FIRST time i sat in my car; the cheap thin plastic snapped right off), Covertec's products are well crafted using great quality leather in a folding case with a magnetic latch that won't break because no moving parts are involved. It even has neat slots in the pouch for 2 spare SD cards, Business/Credit cards all in one stylish, durable, protective packgage that keeps it right on your hip. Don't forget the screen protectors, get them RIGHT away (Palm brand are best IMHO they cost more, but are very clear).
The Palm TX is the superior value in it's class, and is more than a PDA; it is a "PalmTop Computer". I now leave my Laptop at home, this has essentially replaced it for my purposes.

Palm TX rave reviews not all that accurate
Pros: It has a lot of potentially good features
Cons: It's most time-consuming and difficult to use, of the applications that work and they don't all work!
Rhapsody worked some of the time. I have CD’s in PERFECT condition and it locked up the drive (and process) on about 1 of every 3 that I try to rip – I had to reboot in order to eject the CD! (This was before the transfer tracks to the Palm part – that worked OK but the instructions for that were a little “off” and it took me some time to figure it out. As a result of the CD lock-up, I quit using Rhapsody and tried Win Media Player and the trial for Pocket Tunes Deluxe (which is supposed to play wma files as well as MP3 – guess what else failed. On the “sync” (transfer) step I got a WMP error that it couldn’t convert the files to the necessary format indicating that the .wma file support was not in the trial. Pocket Tunes support was very responsive but unable to fix my problem.
It’s too bad that all this stuff has been made so complicated. I worked in software development for over 20 years - long before we had the wonderful technology that is available to us today - and we NEVER made the operation of any hardware product or program so difficult to the user. I haven’t mentioned many of the applications that I didn’t have time to try on the Palm – it comes with quite a few. I “visited” many of them, many of which are free trials, and found them to require more time than I had available to try. The final straw was when my Palm began to turn itself on and off on it’s own. I sent it back for a refund, disappointed that my new toy was so time consuming and so difficult to use. My greatest accomplishment aside from getting the thing connected to Wi-Fi, was the mean hands of poker and solitare that I was able to play – fairly expensive games, I’d say.
Admittedly the Palm TX is my first experience with a pocket p-c but I’ve worked with large main-frame computers AND p-c’s for years and I’ve never seen a product with so many possibilities so wasted by complicated processes and unclear instructions. I bought the Palm TX just to have fun with – life is too short to spend the rest of it trying to make this little fiasco work!

Palm TX > PDA than Treo
Pros: Large and bright screen, light, thin, endless apps, WiFi
Cons: Cannot replace battery, flimsy extras
The Treo 650 was a consideration, but she has a very small cellphone, which is easy for her to carry. The Treo would have forced her to carry a bulky cellphone with her at all times.
The TX has been very nice. The screen is bright, it is well built, has a nice "feel", and it's light. It uses most of it's front surface for the screen, an important consideration in a small device that you will be using mainly for reading documents and PDF's.
Adobe Reader for Palm is great, and renders PDF's that are nearly indistinguishable from the original. Documents to Go has also worked flawlessly.
For her, the music, video and Wifi are secondary considerations, though it's nice to be able to update email thru Wifi.
OS has been stable, battery life is very good (though minimal WiFi use), and no problems with cable synchronization (though I never could get WiFi sync to work).
I agree with others that the power cord, sync cable, and supplied cover are very flimsy.
Pocket tunes works well enough for me, and this PDA could easily replace my Ipod.
Smartphones still make too many compromises in terms of screen size, device size, and data entry to make them good PDA's (though the Treo 650 is very close). For those of us who use PDA's for mobile information recording/accessibility, the classic PDA is still the way to go.

Somewhat Satisfied
Pros: Large Screen, WiFi
Cons: Software Problems
out of 321 user reviews
For people who actually use their PDA's for real work, this is the perfect weapon of choice
Pros: Sleek, ergonomic, fast, wireless and bluetooth capable, bright screen, software support
Cons: Flimsy power adapter connection, cheap faux suede flip cover, battery life while not bad could be better, Graffiti 2 (but there's a way to get Graffiti 1 back on),
Some things that could be improved:
1. An even bigger screen. I don't mind a larger form factor, as long as it is sleek and flat, not bulky, like those Pocket PC's. It would be nice to be able to view the equivalent of a single paperback book page.
2. Vibrating alarm. I miss the vibrating alarm on my T3. I bring my Palm with me everywhere, including meetings, and a vibrating alarm would prevent disruptions.
3. Steel body. While I like the form of my TX, I'm a little worried about its plastic build. In my mind, the Palm V/Vx/m515 were the best Palms ever made. They took a good beating. The TX has the same plastic body as the T5, E2, etc. Even the T3 was flimsy compared to my Palm Vx.
4. Support for even smaller fonts without having to download Fonts4OS5 or FontSmoother.
5. A better power and synchronization connection. It feels as if I'm going to break the plug everytime I connect it to my Palm.
A handheld is nothing more than a glorified "wheelbook" unless you use it right. I can honestly say that my TX has significantly increased my productivity at work and in my life. Here's how I use it:
1. Graffiti 2 is slower than the original Graffiti because it requires two strokes for some letters. While it takes some time to learn Graffiti 1, it is very fast and accurate. I rely on speed of entry without having to look down at my PDA. Information comes at you from all angles and it doesn't wait. I found a way to get Graffiti 1 onto my Palm TX instead and I have noticed a huge speed improvement. (see link: http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=5830 )
2. Battery life can be short if you leave WiFi and Bluetooth on. I keep them off. The only time I use them is when I'm synchronizing with my laptop.
3. There's a great program called Fonts4OS5 (in conjunction with FontSmoother) that allows you to shrink the text so you can view more information at once. It works great, however, the status boxes in the Task List don't display properly when using smaller fonts. The bottom edge of the boxes disappear.
4. I used to use the Franklin Covey PlanPlus software with my PDA, however, whenever I'd synchronize with Outlook, I would have to spend 20 minutes deleting duplicate entries. That's ridiculous. Not to mention Franklin Covey's poor support with regard to that problem or their abandonment of loyal customers when they went from Franklin Planner v8.0 to PlanPlus without an upgrade promotional. Well, I found this program called Natara Bonsai (see link: http://www.natara.com/Bonsai/index.cfm ) which is an outlining program on steroids. I figured out a way to organize tasks and daily notes using this program with all the functionality of PlanPlus (all for $15). Furthermore, my Bonsai generated tasks link to the built in Task List, which synchronizes to Outlook through the included conduits.
5. I bought a reusable "Clarivue" screen protector. It is similar to the X-Brite displays on the newer Sony monitors. It does not "fog" up the screen like other protectors do. In addition, I noticed I do not have to press down on the screen with my stylus as hard anymore. It's as if my Palm is more responsive.
Anyways, if you're into something pragmatic, not just one of those fat, plastic Pocket PC toys that play music and videos, the TX is the perfect weapon of choice.

The Palm TX is one compromise after another
Pros: Nice screen
Cons: Big step backward from Pocket PC
What a mistake! The Palm TX is just one compromise after another. I should have stayed with a Pocket PC. Here are just a few reasons.
Compromise #1: synchronization. My Palm TX would not synchronize with my MS Outlook, so after much research online, I called the Palm support number. I didn’t have to wait long to speak with a support representative, but the call itself took nearly an hour, as we went through every possible solution (uninstallation, reinstallation, tweaking every setting imaginable, etc.). Finally, my case was bumped to a higher level. Late the next day, I finally spoke with a higher-up who provided me with a dated version of Pocket Mirror. This version doesn’t support more than 15 Outlook categories, and so I had to disable the category feature to avoid having Pocket Mirror mess up the categories on my desktop Outlook.
Compromise #2: Documents to Go. After finally getting my Outlook to synchronize (albeit without the very useful categories), I was still unable to hot sync without getting an error message EVERY time I synched, saying that PowerPoint “has encountered a problem and needs to be restarted in safe mode.” The Documents to Go support site (http://support.dataviz.com/support.srch?docid=13623) helpfully stated “[a]lthough we're not sure of the exact cause of this issue, we've come up with steps to fix it.” I haven’t had the time to perform this very complicated fix, but resent having to do a time-consuming workaround on this software.
Compromise #3: lack of support for native PDF. I learned that the Adobe PDF reader does not support native PDF files. As one expert on the Palm support site (http://forums.palm.com/pe/action/forums/displaysinglethread?rootPostID=20255850&returnExpertiseCode=) said, “n order to view Acrobat files using the Adobe Reader for Palm, the files must first be "converted" for use on the Palm with the desktop companion Adobe Reader for Palm application, then sent to the Palm. In other words, Adobe Reader for Palm does not read Acrobat files in their native .pdf format.”
Compromise #4: Blazer browser. Graphics-heavy websites that displayed fine on my Pocket PC are rejected by Blazer with the message “this site is too large to be displayed.” My only option appears to be to disable images, which is not always a satisfactory solution. In addition, Blazer will not display other languages properly without downloading a third-party application. I have also not found a way to send a page (or link) by e-mail, which is a useful feature with Pocket Internet Explorer.
Compromise #5: Versamail. This e-mail application works well in most cases. I download the first 10kb of each message to save on space, as I did with Pocket Outlook on my Pocket PC. With Pocket Outlook, I could mark messages for downloading later (for longer messages and attachments). This was an invaluable feature which is not available on Versamail.
Compromise #6: No multitasking. I didn’t realize how much I used my Pocket PC’s multitasking ability until I began using the Palm TX.
Compromise #7: Battery life. The battery runs down more quickly than I had expected. However, this issue has been covered thoroughly by others, so I can’t say I wasn’t warned.
Compromise #8: OfficeMax’s return policy. Even after outlining some of the above reasons to an OfficeMax customer service person, I was told I could not return my Palm TX, since it wasn’t “defective.” I could only exchange it for another unit. There was no recourse. Since I didn’t buy it directly from Palm, Palm would not refund my money, either. So, I am stuck with a $300 unit that does not come close to doing what my two-year-old Pocket PC (running Windows Mobile 2003) could do.
I know that several of the compromises I described above can be solved through installing third-party software, but much of it is quite costly. Why should third-party software have to be installed to provide basic functionality to a brand-new Palm?
This is my first ---and last--- Palm. I am returning to Pocket PC as soon as I can afford to buy one.

Better That Older Units
Pros: WiFi, Nice Screen
Cons: Difficult to Pair With a CDMA CellPhone
A camera would be a nice addition, but is not crucial.
You can change the battery if you have the right screwdrivers from CompUsa or RadioShack. The reviews are incorrect when they indicate the battery cannot be replaced.
It is difficult to get the TX PDA to pair with a CDMA cellphone. I cannot get this to work, but can with a GSM phone? The error message tells the user to get phone updates and needs to be much more specific. Palm Support is, well, awful if you can get it. If someone knows how to use the PDA with a CDMA cellphone via bluetooth (if this can be done), please respond as the documentation falls short.
I like the unit and rate it a 9 out of 10 because bluetooth in some cases does not work for me and I am very technical.
After heavy use, my TX will no longer sync. with Outlook. This is a story told many times on this forum. Palm support could care less. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all software, done hard resets and nothing works. I retract my original rating of 9 and now give this a 4. Stay away from this and buy a Treo or a Windows device. I never had issues with my Treo and am buying another as a replacement.

A finicky Unit
Pros: Large Screen, intuitive use
Cons: Often requires hard reset; Graffiti 2 more error prone and unit requires more pressure to write
The other thing I fiind with the TX is Graffiti 2 is very error prone. I also find you have to apply a fair bit of pressure to get characters to appear properly without ending up with numerous errors - such as a pile of periods instead of the letter D, as an example. I find after writing a couple of paragraphs, my hand is actually tired. I much prefer PDAs with a keyboard, such as the ones Handspring had on their units or the ones on the Blackberry.
This could be a really good unit if it were more stable and Graffiti wasn't so error prone requiring so much pressure. I never had a Palm before this that was this bad.

Pros: Speedy, and efficient. Had every application I needed standard on the device.
Cons: Unstable. Locks up, and needs to be reset constantly.
I will admit, it is a fast little bugger, but I will be returning this one right back to the store today.

More gadget than serious business tool
Pros: Nice colorful screen, Wi-Fi, email
Cons: Clunky interface, simplicity and appeal of the classic PDA almost gone
I rely heavily on internet reviews now before making purchases. In that spirit, I wanted to pass along my experiences to other people who may be considering the Palm TX. You’re going to see that I repeatedly compare the m515 to the TX because I found the m515 to be a very stable and reliable PDA. I’ve now been working with the TX for the past few days and I’ve really tried to be fair in understanding that it will take a while to get used to the TX.
Pro: The screen is backlit and beautiful. Although my m515 was also backlit, there are more colors available on the TX, and the screen can also be flipped to let you look at things with a landscape portrait. Pictures look better than ever.
Con: The screen is so crowded with buttons and menus, you actually have less viewing area than on previous Palm PDAs. Palm has also put a virtual writing area on the TX screen (as opposed to the permanent grey writing area on previous models). The people at Palm thought this was clever, but it’s very annoying. You find yourself having to constantly open and close the virtual writing surface: Opening it to write, closing it to view things, then opening it again and clicking on a different button to access the little keyboard, etc. It’s tedious. The keyboard also has buttons in odd places (every time I try to press the “shift” button, I accidentally hit the button to access the international keyboard). Palm has also made their graffiti language much more difficult to write. On older PDA’s, you wrote in the number column or the alphabet column. Now, you still have to use the separate columns, but you have to write capital letters in an area overlapping the two. If you miss the totally unmarked area, who knows what character will come up. Palm also thought it was cute to get rid of the idea of a “Caps Lock” button on the keyboard. So if you want to quickly type something in all caps, you have to use a whole different keyboard. It gets very old, very fast, and it makes you wonder if tech companies are still using focus groups to test products. The new interface was designed by a sadist-- a slow and unproductive sadist with carpel tunnel syndrome.
Pro: As with previous models, Palm gives you some decent software on an install disk.
Con: It took me longer to setup and install the Palm software than it took to completely setup my new Dell laptop received the same day. The Palm software has become a little clunky and sketchy. It used to be the most reliable software on my PC, but now I question it. As of today, Palm doesn’t even technically offer software for the TX that is compatible with WinXP. I had to go to the Palm website and “pretend” I was using Win98 in order to download a version of Palm Desktop. Why would a company sell a product incompatible with the software running on most personal and business PCs!?
Pro: The TX allows you to check email and access the internet. The email and internet access really does work as advertised and are pretty amazing. It’s like something out of future. Unlike the main Palm Desktop software, the setup of email and Wi-Fi was painless and very quick. I was surprised.
Con: Internet access is much, much slower than using Wi-Fi on a PC/laptop, and the tiny screen of the TX makes navigating most webpages an effort in futility. That being said, there are some websites with dedicated PDA/smartphone versions, and they work well. I have already used my TX to look for directions, the Yellow Pages, and the latest news. However, in all seriousness, it would be faster for you to call the “movie line” to get showtimes for a movie, or to call a specific business and get directions, than to try and look them up on the TX using the internet.
Pro: The TX has a compact and streamlined USB HotSync cable, and a separate power cable.
Con: Syncing the TX is much, much slower than Syncing my m515. Although I am really only using my TX for the most basic functioning at this point (tasks, contacts, and calendaring), it still takes three times as long to Sync my TX as it did to Sync my m515. This should not be the case.
Pro: The TX came with a free screen protector.
Con: Palm needs to figure out a better system for installing screen protectors, or design replaceable screens. If you don’t get the screen protector on just perfectly, you’ll have fingerprints and/or bubbles under the plastic layer, and you’ll be unable to view or access parts of the screen. It’s a miserable experience that mimics putting a condom over your cell phone, and then trying to dial using buttons you can’t see.
Pro: The TX has a central “navigation” button.
Con: The navigation button is almost totally useless. In almost every Palm application, you need the stylus at some point. Having the navigation button doesn’t speed anything up. I would prefer that they have used the space for an additional button to allow quick access to the tasks/to do lists.
Pro: The TX allows you to listen to music and view videos.
Con: There is no voice recorder so there is no way to record a short memo while driving, or record a meeting. Palm deliberately left this out as a marketing tool to force people into the more expensive LifeDrive. Also, with respect to the MP3/video player, I bought this as a business device and I’m not going to sit like some idiot and listen to/watch rap or techno all day. Even if I did so choose, I would buy the Apple iPod Shuffle because I would want the simplicity of the Apple user interface. What are you going to do: Put the TX in the sweaty pocket of your running shorts and then stop every block to pull it out and wade through endless menus and toolbars with the stylus to select new songs? Good luck.
In a nutshell, I would recommend the TX only because it’s a decent PDA with email and internet access for under $300. The internet and email functions really do work as advertised, but the classic Palm PDA is nearly dead. The interface is cluttered and confusing and I’m not just throwing that out there as if I’m some 80-year-old technophobe curmudgeon. I like useful technology to the extent it makes me more productive. But I sincerely miss the absolute simplicity, reliability and sheer effectiveness of previous Palm PDAs. I remember having the m100 and even today it would do 90% of what I need a PDA to do. If you are on a budget, or can live without Wi-Fi and email, I would highly recommend you select an older Palm PDA.

TX Could be Great!
Pros: Strong Wi Fi
Cons: No Voice, Random Reboots
I upgraded to the Palm TX and have had sync problems, random reboots, lock ups, etc. on a constant basis. Lock ups in Versa Mail have caused me to pull my hair out so much; I need a hair transplant next week.
Palm customer service is not worth a gallon of puppy pee pee. They immediately blame the problems on third party applications. I guess we can no longer put any programs on our Palm after we purchase it or upgrade any software. Sorry Pocket Quicken, Sorry Splash ID, Splash Shopper, Sorry Splash Photo. All third party game makers should now shut down operations because Palm customer service said that these games are the root cause of problems with the Palm TX. I have never had such poor service from Palm. Since there is no full screen Treo I am happy with my Motorola Razr and my Palm. Why all the problems with Palm OS all of a sudden? Do I really need to look at the Pocket PC? Is it time for a Dell Axim?
The Palm OS in the PIM category is a sheer winner. But the stability problems I have had in my TX are terrible. What we need is the Palm of old. Update the Palm Desktop to include mailing labels, viewing of shared calendars, and recording of appointments under the contacts we meet with, and we will all be happy. Agendus tries to hard, it could be much simpler. Anyway Palm’s service has reached rock bottom!!
And they say technology is supposed to make your life easier. Maybe the paper planner really is better.

Avoid if you're a serious user
Pros: outweighed by disadvantages
Cons: slower than my Tungston C
Avoid this product if you are are serious user. Palm has abandoned the Pocket Mirror technology and thus compromised the accuracy of data synced between pc and handheld. The sync operation no longer resolves "conflicts" by using the most up-to-date entry. It forces resoltions requiring you to choose that one device always wins. This causes both out of date entries and duplicate entries. Problem is compounded when you're trying to sync Outlook on multiple pcs (home and work). I spent a week with Palm technicians trying to resolve the problem. At this point, they acknowledge the problem and have no solution other than the customer buying a copy of Pocket Mirror Professional (which Palm does not support).

Lousy Service
Pros: Nice Screen, Works most of the time
Cons: Can't write lower case letters -- Service policies are lousy
Received the Palm back today after sending it to Palm for service. Still has a dead spot on the digitizer -- this is the same problem that has now not been fixed TWICE! Now I have to give them a credit card number to get an advance exchange. UNBELIEVEABLE. Have been without the use of the Palm for 20 days!!!!!!
Don't count on good service with PALM... I really hate to say it... but their service has failed to fix this machine. Am wondering about what kind of junk they're going to send in exchange

Music file support inadequate
Pros: Looks nice for PDA & photos
Cons: Only plays MP3s
have for handheld music players. They do not support enough types of music file types/extensions. It's pointless for a professional musician to use either device,
except in a limited way because we make and listen to ... MIDI files. Until a Music Player/PDA supports more music files, I will
have to continue storing my MP3 files on
a flash-memory stick which I can plug into a
laptop. I don't want to have to carry something that large, but the manufacturers
of handheld devices cripple the music software by reading only a couple of file extensions. If there is MIDI software out there for a PDA (maybe there is) let me know; I will reconsider purchasing a PDA.
I won't consider a mini player at all because they only support MP3/WMA/ATRAC.

Good, But Still Lacking
Pros: Big Screen, WiFi, Low Price
Cons: Same Old Palm Software after 5+ years
One thing that is probably not a big deal for most people, but was very handy for me on my brick of a Pocket PC, was the VOICE RECORDING feature. Adding voice recordings to your notes is something a songwriter can't do without. So...what happened, Palm? Did you guys just forget? I had this functionality 5yrs ago on a Casio!
Still the T|X easily passes as one of the best PDAs on the market for the price. One of my favorite features is the fact that I can charge using the USB sync cable. I found this out the hard way when my cat chewed up the end of my power supply cable.
Here comes the rascal now. Good thing he can't read!

Undependable
Pros: Thin, nice screen, great fit and finish
Cons: Device hangs requiring hard reset
However, in five days of use, it failed to power up 3 times even tho the battery was fully charged - each incident required a hard reset. On one occasion, the device would not even reset and I had to flush the memory and re-load all my data.
If that weren't bad enough, the Palm desktop software crashes repeatedly on my Win XP Pro machine due to "an unknown error".
I need to trust my handheld, but I can't if it won't turn on when I press the power button. I returned this dud to Best Buy...

Fits my lifestyle
Pros: Speedy, zippy, loud audio, bright screen
Cons: Sometimes web browsing can be slow; WiFi sucks up battery
1. Spacious memory
2. Speedy switching of processors
3. Audio through a pair of Sony headphones is loud and clear.
4. Easy-to-use Graffiti 2 (much more intuitive than Graffiti 1)
Cons:
1. Sometimes web browsing is slower than I expected.
2. The WiFi definitely consumes tons of battery power.
3. So does audio.
Overall, it's lasted me two days on one charge with that kind of usage (I check my e-mail 4 times a day on it, and spend 2 hours listening to music each day as well). And I've managed to find software to help manage my school life too. Totally cool! Definitely recommend this to other users.

Great device, showstoppers in software
Pros: Connectivity, design, screen...
Cons: preloaded software unstable
After I'd pretty much exhausted every variant of conduit settings, different account setups, a few hard resets just to make sure things were not being messed up by my previous atttempts I gave in and called techsupport. I kept my temper whilst the guy on the phone walked me through everything I'd already tried. We even created a "test" inbox on the PC filled with nothing but a few dozen plaintext emails and it STILL crashed the moment I displayed the inbox on the handheld.
Now I knew what to look for, of course, I was able to find lots of reports on the web of versamail crashing the device.
An unstable email program being a showstopper for me, this one is going back to the store.

Lack of voice recording is a deal breaker on an otherwise delightful PDA.
Pros: Lots of desirable features at a reasonable price point
Cons: No voice recording
Although Palm's LifeDrive is nice, the puny 4 Gb hard drive is very disappointing. If Apple can build iPods with 30 Gb hard drives for $300, it would seem Palm could provide more than 4 Gb for $500. Besides, flash memory is the future. You can now buy a 4 Gb SD card for under $200, and I've read there are even companies preparing 32 Gb SD cards for manufacturing at this time. The day is coming when big flash memory cards will be very inexpensive commodities.
The TX has everything I want at a reasonable price - except voice recording which I desperately need!
It would seem to be a no-brainer that Palm would include voice recording in a PDA with this feature set at this price point. It is beyond me why they would choose to leave out something that would be so easy to include.
I hope they get it right next time, or I may have to go over to the dark side and look at Pocket PCs.

Best ever PDA, but reliabilty is suspect.
Pros: Everything you could ever want
Cons: Many user nightmares reported
Having all this in two coat pockets is a dream. No more tablet PC for me. No more laptop.
But the morning after I bought and set up my T|X it had crashed and it needed a hard reset and a reinstallation of a lot of stuff. Possiby that was because I upgraded from a Tungsten T2 and some of the legacy things in my profile were incompatible with the slightly different operating system that the T|X uses.
Thanks to Palm phone support for calming me down and taking care of it.
Since then I've had no problems, and I really hope it stays that way, because this thing is amazing. Videos, slideshows, games etc, are outstanding because the large dispay panel is as good as any LCD television. The Tungten T2 looks so dim beside the T|X.
So why 7 out of 10? Because Palm's own user forums are awash with massive problems and inconveniences suffered by the user base.
Plus I can only get online at home if I make my wireless router unsecured, which is not an option in the city!
One other issue is, why do I not care that the T|X is not also a telephone? Since my Palm Pilot and Windows CE days I always wished for an all-in-one pocket computer that was a phone, but now I think it's better to have a seperate compact mobile phone.
My wife has the Treo, which is commonly condidered the best handheld devce, but I give that a 1 out of 10 becuase the screen is not good, and it's to small, and because my thumbs obscure the entire keyboard and press more than one button at a time, and because I need +2.50 reading glasses to even see what's printed on the keycaps. The treo is 100% useless to me. I cannot even make a phone call on it without a magnifying glass.
So that's it, get a Palm T|X but start with a fresh install of your 3rd party software and make sure the versions of the programs you have are on the T|X compatibility list, and rename your old C:\Program Files\Palm\[yourname]\backup folder to backupold before you start, and get a clean start with the enclosed Palm Desktop software disc (it's improved), so that you don't have issues caused by legacy profiles, backups, software etc.
If you, and I, never have another problem, then this is it, the T|X is the very best handheld ever sold, be it Palm or Windows.

THE best PDA with a great price.
Pros: It has everything. Great Screen, Good Battery Life, Generous RAM, Wifi, Bluetooth, Palm OS...
Cons: Non-user-replaceable battery.
However, in the Palm OS world, there is no doubt in my mind that TX is currently the best PDA out in the market. It is very stable in itself. Some programs for older version of Palm OS are incompatible with TX's new Non-Volatile-File based OS, and it can create havoc. While it is too bad that these programs don't play well with TX (because some of them are very good, very creative programs, as Palm programs often are), there are many other programs out there that performs the same tasks just as well and better. I have had my TX for two months, and I am very pleased with its performance, and I was able to replace all the older softwares with newer updates and equivalents that are 100% compatible with TX. I will, and cannot, leave home without it. Even after installing all the essential (and a quite a few non-essential programs, many of them freeware), I still have 73 Megabyte of free RAM space left that I have no idea what to do with at the present. I am sure I will find a way to fill them up eventually.
One small draw back, and this is mainly because I wish to be able to keep this device for decades to come, is that it does not have user-replaceable battery. However, I am fairly certain that by the time my TX battery sees its final day, the hardware and the software in TX would then be hopelessly outdated anyway. Nevertheless, I would be quite reluctant to let it go even then.
A great machine for less than $300.

Outlook synch doa/tech support nonexistent
Pros: All the ffeatures mentioned in other reviews
Cons: Does not synch to Outlook and tech support does NOT even answer the phone
When it arrived, I installed it as instructed, and waited for the choice of the Outlook synch feature at the end of the installation. Instead I got an error message. I removed teh installation and tried again, with the same result.
The TX looked great, the features looked great, but nothing would synch: the Outlook was nowhere to be found.
I tried calling customer support (not easy to find on thier website!!!), but could not get tech support at that time. I waited until they were open, waited 45 minutes on the phone without so much as a human to answer, and gave up. I bought a rock, for all the use it is.
I am returning it to Palm, severely disappointed in their lack of care for their customers.
I will not be purchasing a Palm in the near future.

Superb light travel product
Pros: Functionality
Cons: a bit buggy (Palm)
Battery life: I've noted comments on marginal battery life. I've been using the Palm TX for over a month now. For two days it spent over 10 hours on while loading SD cards and setting up the apps. The only time the Palm was connected to power was during hotsyncs. The lowest battery reading I've seen so far is 46% and that was after it had been used sporadically for days and had not been hotsynced for days. Battery life is exceptional. Blows away any Palm (or iPod) I've ever had. Other than the first charge, the TX has NEVER seen a charger. It appears to take all the charge it needs when its hotsync'd (Apple Powerbook). For about 20 hours of continual run time, APC makes an $8.00 AA battery case with a usb socket on it.
I bought the TX to avoid lugging a laptop around when I travel. My criteria were simple web access, email, photo storage and the ability to do simple edits on photo's and email them. Contacts and datebook were irrelevant.
The Blazer browser is very good. Opera would be nice but Blazer is fine.
I use Versamail. It does everything I need it to do.
I use a Sony camera and have to move the photo's onto several 2 gig SD cards I have. I use an Aleratec Copy Cruiser. There are many out there which are less than the $75 I spent on the Alera. The SD card is then used for photo storage and viewing/editing (Resco Viewer) on the Palm.
For those interested in using the great Photo apps available, crop and resize the photos before syncing. Neither Palm's "Move to" or Missingsync do a great job and parts of the photo will be missing. On a 1 gig card I have 5,000 photos with room to spare (all going in with the least amount of JPEG compression).
Compared to travel with a laptop, I've replaced a laptop, extra battery and charger, card reader, iPod and charger with the Palm, the Aleratec, an iPod and the iPod's usb charger which charges both. Far easier to pack, insignificant weight and a far more versatile product for travel.
Its great. I had planned on using a cell phone for access but WiFi is so available (be it at a Starbucks or simply turning it on and seeing some retail store has an unprotected network -- seems to be the norm) that WiFi is all I need.
Cons:
For Drivemode, do a Google on drivemode.zip, install on an SD card (don't load through Hotsync), move into RAM and it works fine. Why Drivemode is not included on the TX is beyond me.
The Palm format does not get along with the Alertec. None of my 4 SD cards will work on the Aleratec if formatted on the Palm. I format all cards with "MS-DOS" on an Apple and all is well. Just have to remember to never use the Palm to format a card.
Its still a Palm and 3rd party apps can lock it up. PalmPDF seems to be my only problem and it locks maybe 10% of the time.
Hotsync is poor on an Apple platform -- use Missingsync.

PDA Great - Palm Support REALLY BAD
Pros: WiFi Great, Bright, readable Display, Battery Life good
Cons: Palm will sell an expensive accessory with no driver available
I was able to restore the menus and writing area to the bottom of the screen by removing the driver. Thank goodness I had a 3rd party file manager because Palm does not provide one. (WiFile sees files on my home network, but not on the palm, or card).

This is a great handheld with WiFi to boot!
Pros: WiFi, available memory and gorgeous color screen
Cons: Difficulty uploading video files from quick install. Can't find system directory.
I have had trouble with installing large video files to the expansion card via the Palm Desktop. I'd also like a directory listing of everything on the device. I have also had it reboot during Hot-Sync for unknown reasons. The lack of printed documentation was a minus as well. If these problems were fixed, and they added a voice recorder, this would be a nearly perfect device.

Palm Strikes Hard With This New PDA
Pros: Wifi, Full Screen Video
Cons: Laggy when multitasking, Software package lacking compared to PocketPC
Battery life lasts up to 6 hours if you are only listening to mp3s and turn off the screen, otherwise, the battery can drain as fast as 1 1/2 hour if you got bluetooth, wifi, and movie playing. Normal battery life is from 2-3 hours depending on how much wifi and bluetooth you use.
Memory may be a bit lacking, but I bought a a 512MB SDFlash card with my TX and I find I have all the memory I need. I can hold 5-7 hours of mp3s at 128kb - more music than I listen to in a week.
I've done some experimenting with converting DVDs to compressed 480x320 size video, but it is all too impractical unless you're the biggest of movie enthusiasts. In any case, a 2-3 hour movie can be compressed and converted to fit on a 512MB card, but your batteries may run out before you get full way through for some of the longer movies.
Wifi and internet is a breeze - very excellent support. The browser renders pages pretty well. Only downside is that it doesn't have support for many types of web media such as Windows Media or Real or Quicktime. Even when it can play the file, the TX does not support streaming and must download the whole file before it plays.
One thing palm has over PocketPC is commercial apps like VersiChat - a multi-protocal all-in-one IMing client. Also, you can buy TV subscriptions over wifi for the TX.
Bottom Line:
The TX is a bit bare on the software level and lacks memory if one wants to use it for a multimedia device so expect to spend an extra 100-200 dollars on flash memory and software.
With these upgrades, I find the Palm comparable and in many instances better than the PocketPC.
The Palm TX is probably the best Palm out there, but when comparing it to other brand of devices such as Windows PocketPC and even Blackberries and now cell-phones that come equipped with as many features, the Palm TX fails to shine as bright as it once did.
Sure it can do *almost* everything all the other devices can, but its outdated PalmOS v5 (3 years old and counting) and a lack of built in features makes the palm not as attactive as other devices.
Buy a PocketPC - it will be supported more longer.

Pros: Ease of use, & speed with which it operates
Cons: Still Palm OS based
I like what it does with it's Wi-Fi also in that it will log you off if it's not getting used so as to save battery life. Now I'm new to the world of Wi-Fi with PDA's, but it seems as though there isn't much they haven't thought of.
There's also a wide variety of software available for purchase through a number of sources to include Palm's web site. All of these things combine to make your PDA a truly useful product.

Annoying small Bugs!
Pros: Good design, Wi Fi.
Cons: Many bugs in the bundled software, Battery not user replacable, the cover provided by company is useless.
I found the following pitfalls.
The Birthday date field in contacts has a format of dd/mm/yyyy. U cant change the format to dd/mm . not everyone will be willing to reveal the year of birth. when u insert only date and month and leave the year the palm takes current year as year of birth.
2. The graffiti pad occupies 1/3 of screen when u try to view pdf files on palm. You cant hide the grafiti area. I found the same problem being experienced by other users on palm forum. You cant do anything with that unless the palm releases an upgrade.
3. you cant view the powerpoint slides in full screen when u try to view the show. always u have to see in Notes Pages view, i.e. 1/3rd of the screen will be occupied by the notes below the slide. u cant switch to full screen show.
4. the battery is not user replacable
5. the cover provided by palm is useless. it does not serve any purpose. u have to buy another one.
I dont understand why palm does not think seriously about these problems before they release any product. Though these are small issues they are irritating and they hinder ur work.
I found these until now.
i dont know how many will i find in coming days.

PALM-TX works with RHAPSODY music service
Pros: The TX is relatively quick and has a nice screen which can used in landscape mode. The WI-FI and Bluetooth are great.
Cons: The battery life could be better.
I agree with the others, Palm did an excellent job developing this PDA. My only quibble is the battery life. But, you are going to use some juice when you have a screen that could function as a flashlight on it's lowest setting. I could work with a darker screen, if it would extend the battery life. Are you listening Palm? If you want to see how quick the battery can be drained, try streaming radio such as Live 365 or Shoutcast through a WI-FI connection.
I purchased the PALM TX for basic PDA functions. But, the ability to download music from the RHAPSODY subscription music service is a great add-on. No purchase is required to download the music, but there is a monthly subscription fee. It beats the heck out of itunes for my money.
* USING THE RHAPSODY SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE *
The PALM TX manual fails to thoroughly address a couple of issues for downloading music to the PDA. The following software is required: WIN-XP, Pocket Tunes Deluxe, and Windows Media Player (vers. 10 for the PC).
Yes, it only works with Windows-XP. You must upgrade, at additional cost, the basic Pocket-Tunes music player which comes with the TX. You can get a discount for upgrading through your PALM TX. You will probably want to pickup a 1GB SD Card for storing your music. The service works fine, once you get the pieces in place.
Why carry an extra device around when the PALM TX will function as a MP3 player and take care of plenty business.

I'm very happy
Pros: User friendly, plays MP3, full screen photos with high resolution screen, WiFi, SD memory card adds a lot of flexibility
Cons: Bluetooth headphones don't work, only 128 meg of internal memory, need to pay to upgrade to play WMA files. No cradle with the TX.
This Palm cost $200 less than my old Palm However, it has the following improvments: 128 meg rather than 5.
Color Screen
Displays and sorts photos
Plays audio files
Has WiFi and bluetooth.
Can read Mircosoft documents.
Better software
Speedier response.

Pleasantly pleased
Pros: Great screen, zippy performance, nice operating system
Cons: Connecting to home router = major headache
You may find this odd but I just didn't click with the 71, so much about it felt awkward: the operating system left much to be desired, I always felt like the camera mechanism would break (it slided in and out of the main PDA housing) and I just felt very "ehh" about it. I'm glad to tell you the Palm TX has given me faith in Palm after that disastor.
The screen on the TX is really great. Pictures are really very bright and detailed, and while screen quality isn't everything, it can make the device more fun to use. I love the operating system on the TX (garnet). It feels much more robust than the old Palm OS's and the little toolbar at the bottom of the screen is really great. There are a ton of great uses for it: hiding the keyboard, accessing wi-fi, utilizing the search feature, etc. The design of the TX is nice, though I would have loved if they made it more like the Palm V.
I do, however, have some gripes with Palm's new handheld. While many users have said the wi-fi works well, I have found it very difficult to connect to my home router. After searching Palm's website for help forums I found out many users had the same problem. Luckily, I go back to college for the spring semester in a matter of days so it won't matter much. But...a word of warning to those planning on making a lot of use of their home router: you'll likely have to spend hours configuring the TX's DNS.
The Palm TX is a great mix of everything you would want in a PDA. Everything fits perfectly in place and when you remember you own one, you'll really feel glad you do. Great PDA.

Like getting socks and underwear for Christmas
Pros: Large Display, wifi, bluetooth, tap-to-dial
Cons: Obnoxiously resets, not enough memory,
I just returned my TX after having it for two weeks. I picked it up just before New Years.
At first I was very excited about the device. I was upgrading from an M105 I'd had for several years. Relieved that the interface was basically unchanged I plunged right in.
While it seemed like it was a cool device with bluetooth, wifi, email, and webbrowsing. The reality is that it is just a basic old palm with some sparkly jewelry.
I did like the tap-to-dial and tap-to-email feature. But unless you have hundreds of people that you call everyday, its really a little cumbersome. Besides, if you're calling that many people with you cell phone it is best to use a telephony dialing service.
My TX would reset itself several times a day. I did notice that if I didn't use it it never reset
The TX would also lock up occasionally requiring a soft reset.
The device or hotsync app would occasionaly lock during a hotsync operation, requiring a soft reset of the device and killing the hotsync app.
128MB of memory (100MB usable) is still not enough for anything but token pictures and a couple of mp3s. I could by a $200 2GB SD card to expand the memory. If I did that I might as well have bought the LifeDrive.
Getting video on the device was supposed to be simple. Well, it was simple once you figure out which encoding schemes the media conduit doesn't like.
Lots of neat things to admire about the TX, but in the end I was just not satisfied with device. It was just not stable enough for me.

falls short - the software kills it !
Pros: size, battery life, ease of use
Cons: OS & text input needs improvement
slim and light, mp3 plays really good sound.
wifi and bluetooth works great.
but I left my Dell Axim to ge this one but now i'm switching back for the following reasons :
1. text input is rather difficult and screen don't always respond well
2. the internet browser "Blazer" is a big hassle. many websites can't work on it, cannot open more multiple pages.
3. can't open more than one program at the same time
4. does not support MSN Messenger or any other chat software. the only alternative is called "IM+" . it's not only crappy but will crash the Palm almost every time you open it.

Almost Perfect when compared to the other PDAs.
Pros: Wifi, Big Screen, 128 Fash ROM, Blazer Surfing, Palm OS and more!
Cons: A few cons but not enough to change your mind.
PROS:
+ Big Screen
+ Palm OS Reliablity
+ Wifi (Easy to Configure)
+ 1GB SD Card Compatible (Transcend 80X)
+ 128mb Flash ROM (Good if battery dies)
+ Watch movies on it
+ Stream LIVE radio through Pocket Tunes
+ Builtin speaker
+ Hotsync through Wifi or USB
+ Check Email with Ease
+ Converts Office Documents
CONS
- Battery (Should be removable) (3rd party?)
- Slow Syncing via USB
- No Flash Media Player Support
- No Windows Media Video Support (3rd party?)
- No Quicktime Support (3rd party?)
- No Realplayer Support (3rd party?)
- Cheap case cover included
- Lack of Bundled Software
- Tries to convert your videos when syncing
- No Voice Recorder
- May not like your old palm programs
- Low static noise in headphones when nothing is playing
Those are just a few things and even though I did list quite a few negatives it is only to nitpick. If you compare it for the value and to what everyone else is offering then this isn't so bad.
I've tried quite a few handful of PDAs and the Palm OS is the way to go. Sure Dell has something like this but it is bulkier and built with the unreliable windows sytem. Sure the battery does die rather quickly but what do you expect with a product with wifi enabled, an external speaker and video capabilities? Just would be nice if they let you easily remove the battery for replacement.
Though there is a way around this and there are devices that will charge your items via USB. For about $15 you can buy a USB battery Extender and plug in Four AA batteries and then charge your Palm TX back up. So that is an alternative to that problem. Just like the IPOD I am sure you can also replace the internal battery as well so I don't find this that big of an issue.
I've been successful in converting and watching a movie (isn't dvd quality but not bad for the size downsampled to 200KBPS to 300KBPS) on this but you definitely don't want to use the built in feature because it is extremely slow so get a Transcend 80x Secure Digital Card, USB 2.0 Card Reader (If your system supports 2.0), and visit "The Core Pocket Media Player" website and become enlightened. This is the fastest way to do it. I converted a 20 minute video in about 4 minutes and transfered it on to the SD card in about 30 seconds roughly. Only COMPLAINT is sometimes you may hear some static which disappears when playing music, videos, or games but if you just have your headphones plugged in you will hear this faint static noise which could be just electronic interference or I just have good ears. Again something that doesn't have much weight to not to like this TX.
The other thing I have noticed is that syncing is kind of slow and you might want to try the wifi connection instead of the usb. It seems that the wifi connection is faster than the USB but I haven't timed it. It easier than plugging it into usb, all you do is click sync on the TX and it does the job wirelessly which I think is pretty cool.
Now for web browsing it surfs the web pretty well, I was even able to surf CNET considering the load cnet puts on its pages. Though the key is telling the FONT TO BE SMALL which will make webpages look the way they should and the factory DEFAULT is LARGE. Just a little tip. The other bad part is that I have looked around and can't seem to find any Flash player support so any website that required macromedia flash or shockwave, well you are SOL. As for different movie formats, well when you get this with the standard software, you will be disappointed. Sure it can convert movies but takes a long time and that is why you will need to get a 3rd party program to play your videos. The free stuff out the such as TCPMP and converts are actually pretty good and you might be disappointed with the ones you pay for. So give the free guys a shot first and read your reviews before you buy any palm software because some of those guys are just copying the beta programmers.
So have I overloaded you with information? Probably I have and I have so much more to comment about which I may update in the future but I wanted you readers to see what this baby can do. It can do a lot for the money and is pretty close to having a laptop in your pocket. Still ISN'T it but VERY CLOSE. I have been looking for something like this for awhile and I have to say this is a great laptop replacement for information on the go.
Surf the net, Open office documents, pdfs, music, movies, get directions, gps capable, bluetooth can hook you up to your phone, save other file formats on to the SD card via wifi or usb and take your stuff home. It is just an all-in-one solution which is probably what most of us need and could finally ditch the laptop at home and only use it for actual work.
Oh and as for my rating of 10, I actually rate this an 8 but I don't think it is fair for people to rate this a 1 so I am just evening it out. This isn't perfect but I doubt you will be dissatisfied with this product. Especially if you try your best to learn about it and what you can do then this product becomes 10x better than what it is, it all depends on your own effort.

Hot sync problems
Pros: great features for price, wi-fi worked great
Cons: never able to hot sync on two models
Bought a T/X to replace Tungsten E (which works fine on both my computers). Was unable to hot sync ever. Took it back to Best Buy and their techs also looked at it stating that USB cable was probably bad. They replaced it but next model did exactly same thing. This time took no chances and got my money back.
Features, screen and fast wi-fi were great but doesn't matter if can't sync.

Man, am i glad i decided to buy this pda. I have had the tx for about 2 weeks and it has been extremely easy to use. I haven't had problems with the built-in apps, hotsyncing with my desktop at work or home(Windows XP Pro) or any of the apps that I have downloaded (WinInstaller, DateBk 5 or PowerRun). I love the wi-fi capability (which i use often). I haven't used bluetooth yet, but will be trying it out soon with a gps receiver. The screen is gorgeous and the sound quality through headphones is great. Overall, I would say that I have no regrets so far!

a great value
Pros: wifi, >100mb memory, large screen, easy-to-use/stable/responsive palm interface
Cons: plastic casing
i tested pocket pc's... it takes programs longer to load up, you have to click more buttons to get to the programs you want to get to, and the wifi-options will cost you more in general. even if this was a pocket pc, it would be a much better value in terms of hardware than the other options available...however, it's even better for having the palm os which is faster and more stable.
you'll be cursing yourself for choosing a pocket pc when it crashes... and you'll realize that the theoretical ability to have it synch up perfectly with windows to see all your outlook options really isn't that big a benefit...do u really use all those options? also, one can argue that through third-party apps, the palm can keep up with and maybe even do better than the pocket pc's when it comes to synching with windows desktops.
this is a great pda, but if you are looking for email/calendar functionality, a treo might be a better option because you would always have it on you and have internet anywhere.

It's just what I want for now, and can handle programs I may need in the future. It's speed is unbelievably fast. It’s ability to compress files like it does still amazes me. With the unlimited possibility of expansion cards, the TX offers so much more than an I-pod.
Though other users have a problem with the battery life, if you use it as a PDA and actually sync up with your computer, it'll charge itself very quickly while it syncs.
Also, I haven't had any problems with music or videos.
I absolutely, positively love this thing!

Switched over from Clie
Pros: Wifi, screen, memory
Cons: No voice recorder or keyboard
I really like the memory and price, but I miss the keyboard from the TG50. May of my programs were all in palm software, so I really didn't want to switch to Pocket PC, but as a looked over the features, memory and screen size - TX beat everything - especially in the price. Palms got a great product in the TX. I hope they keep going strong!

From Palm to PocketPC, and back to Palm! The TX is awesome!
Pros: Beautiful large hi-res screen; nice compact size; tactile buttons; solid, balanced stylus; very fast; extremely convenient and intuitive interface
Cons: Non-user-removable battery, fit is a bit tight when sync and power cables are both plugged in
The Palm TX suffers from none of those problems and adds things I wondered if they'd ever implement on any PDA. (Example: It will pair with your Bluetooth phone and do the dialing for you right from your address book!) I swore I would never purchase a unit without a user-removable battery, but the TX is so superior in every other way it was impossible to resist. This unit is just outstanding all-around! It's extremely intuitive, with all of the most used functions available through unobtrusive one-click icons at the bottom of every screen. Wifi and Bluetooth setup were a snap, and you can keep multiple profiles for networks away from home. All functions are very fast.
Because for me the organizer features are crucial, I live out of my PDA. So, I like a compact one I can take everywhere. I had bought my iPAQ 1940 because it was the smallest on the market at the time. I feared that a feature-packed replacement with a nice big screen would be comparatively huge. But while the TX's screen is about 1/4" taller (same width) with much better resolution than even the current PocketPC models I compared, it really only adds a smidgen to the width and less than 1/4" to the height of the iPAQ (same thickness).
My biggest secondary reason for wanting a PDA is being able to browse the web and check e-mail any time without lugging my laptop everywhere. The combination of that gorgeous screen, one-touch switch to landscape mode and ability to reduce font size, along with superb handling of wifi networking and associated power management, make this the most painless PDA web-browsing I've seen yet!
Overall, this is an excellent choice I can't recommend enough.

The Palm TX is firmly in the PDA camp, but has enough few bells and whistles to keep me interested when I've got some down time.
The AddIt service with WiFi support is great for trying out all those games that looked really cool, but you didn't want to pay for until you've tried them.
I really like the aluminum case too. Since I keep the Palm in a cargo pocket, it takes quite a bit of abuse. I haven't had any problems with this very sturdy case.

Crash city
Pros: Fast, lots of memory, good display, WiFi & Bluetooth
Cons: Crash Crash Crash - resets to factory - no data
Suggestion: Wait till version 2 or some update on the OS comes out. If you actually buy this because of the advantages, lots of memory and WiFi and then actually decide to use applications with all that capacity you are in for trouble. Now it is possible that the unit I received was defective, but Tech Support was extremely motivated to avoid even talking about that possibility.
My solution is to get a mini tablet (Like the Motion 800 series) and forget about the Palm Devices unless you want only what comes on the Palm for you uses.

Good but lacks some features of my Zire
Pros: Looks good. Excellent Screen.
Cons: No voice recorder, no magnification, some photos go in too large, can't figure out how to download music
I thought the TX would be a good upgrade, but .... I am a little disappointed. First with photo's in the Zire, I could magnify them up to 3 times. Can't magnify in the TX.
Photos I put in the Zire seemed to go in filling the screen just right. In some cases, the very same photos when put into the TX are too big. I have to scroll around to see the entire photo.
Second the voice recording feature of the Zire is really handy. I miss that in the TX
Most frustrating, the Zire came with Real Audio. To download music from my desktop Real Audio all I had to do was drag and drop. I still haven't figured out how to download mucic on the TX.
I have had this paper weight for almost a year. It constantly goes down and has to be re installed, except for the last few months I have not even been able to re install it.
I never did figure out how to download music. It won't enlarge phtos like my old Palm did. In the old Palm is was easy to download music.
I spent way to much on this hunk of junk and now it's turned me off of Palm completly.
Back to windows for me.

Palm is not dead.
Pros: Sleek design, bright screen, good battery life, stable
Cons: No replacible battery.
The only major drawback to the unit is the one the is a drawback to all of Palm's products (other than the Treo) and that would be there is no way to replace the battery. If you can overlook this then the TX is going to fit your PDA needs nicely.

Slick PDA with WiFi, Bluetooth & color screen
Pros: Color screen, wireless options, tried & true Palm OS
Cons: Non-user replaceable battery
The color screen has good contrast and is easy to read in most light. The Palm OS looks pretty in color. You can select to view the screen potrait or landscape. Photos and video look great in landscape. MP3's sound surprisingly good. Videos play without skipping but with some ghosting due to low screen refresh rates.
The Palm OS works quickly and without delay. Logging onto a WiFi net is quick and painless. HotSync over WiFi only takes a few moments even when moving pictures and sound files. Using the built-in web browser was darn quick and easy to use. Even regular web pages loaded faster than I would have expected. I have not tried the Bluetooth feature yet.
The included software covers many bases, plus thousands of free and almost free programs are available for this device.
The non-user replaceable battery charges in about 3 hours and seems to last between 3 - 6 hours (depending on wirelss usage).
The flimsy screen cover is nothing to write home about. And I've never been a fan of batteries I can't change. Aside from those two minor issues the Palm TX is a strong performer that hits the sweet spot at less than $300 (as of 10/05).

Cons: Still has crash problems, not enough memory

Some Great Features... Some, not so much.
Pros: WiFi & Bluetooth, 100MB Available Flash RAM, Outstanding screen
Cons: No voice recorder, no vibrating alarm, no alarm/charge LED
The browser is adequate and the included e-mail program is good. Probably as good as anyone could expect from a handheld device.
I miss the voice recorder less than I thought I would, and it's more than offset by the built in WiFi and good battery life.
I have a feeling this may be one of the last Palm Powered PDAs we se from Palm. If it is, I hope mine lasts for a long time.

customer support a misnomer

The best Palm ever
Pros: Screen, Wi-Fi, BlueTooth, tons of memeory
Cons: None, it is outstanding
Literally, anything you can do on your computer you can do on this thing. Palm is very intuitive and simple to use compared to the Windows PDAs. Great design and had no problem with installations. Called techg support and got all the help I needed with no problems.
This is a real keeper. Gonna buy one for my wife next week.

Severely disapponted
Pros: the screen
Cons: the buggy installers for add-ins
I have the latest computer technology and still suffer with installers that don't work, web links that go 404 (site unknown) and I'm talking specifically about the Palm web site. I can't even buy an alligator cover to replace this horrible imitation cover such as they say is available on their web site because once you log onto their web site it doesn't exist! Conclusion: the color is nice the WiFi and Bluetooth may be usable but I doubt it if we keep getting barraged with what with Web ads!

T5 Ripoff *sigh*
Pros: Very nice design, excellent functionability
Cons: Palm sucks. Im sorry, but I hate them. Allot.
Palm has one of the worst technical support services I have EVER seen. EVER. The ammount of frustration I got from my palm? Let's not even get started.
Palms have a tendency to "scream" also, so be ready for that too. Screaming is when the screen emmits an ominous, but incredibly annoying high pitched buzz.
BEWARE THE OPEN BOX DEAL.
Oh, and did I mention their tech support sucks too? My palm froze indeffinitely once. No ammount of resets I tried would work. I told them I had tried all of the reset methods, with no effect. WHat does their response say? It gave me a scripted answer with the reset methods I had allready told them I'd used. Wow. ANd don't bother calling them either - overseas underpaid workers at the telephones are impossible to understand, and impatient.
Finally, I decided to get a TX.
Hers what I like:
- Easy browser and wi fi setup
- Easier to upload videos and music than before (ego. TT3 was a pain)
-Concave power button reduces chances of accidentally turning it on
-Simple, solid, apple like beauty
-Directional button feels very nice. VERY.
-No cradle!!! YAY!
What I don't like:
-No recording feature
-Speaker is on the back, and not the front (When you have it in a case or with the leather flip cover, they cover the speaker - muffling the sound)
-Pump-action stylus is gone (and I loved it so much on the TT3)
If you're getting a Handheld Computer, don't get it unless it has mobile 5. Why?
Mobile 5 rocks that’s why. And if you're getting a handheld comp it probably won’t beat the TX in terms of bang for your buck.
Lastly (and I know I’m harping)
GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!!! PALM TECHNICAL SUPPORT IS CRAAAAAAAAAAAAP!!!!
*sigh*
There you go!

Finally --- a nicely integrated PDA from Palm
Pros: Built in WIFI, Bluetooth, ease of use
Cons: no Skype or other VOIP software
Where the Palm has fallen short has been lack of integrated WIFI and no VOIP -- particularly Skype.
I currently use an HP IPAQ 4700. This is a very expensive PDA but I consider it the best PDA I have ever used with the Palm T5 being the second best. I used lower priced Pocket PCs but found them sluggish compared to the T5.
One of the best application for the Ipaq 4700 is being able to use Skype with WIFI. I also have a version of XTEN's (now CounterPath) Pocket PC Sip Phone Client.
The Palm TX might be the best PDA for people who just want to read mail, browse, have access to documents and have information handy. However, without support for VOIP, Palm still has a big hole to fill for many users.

Welcome back Palm! Builds on successful Palm V/Vx
Pros: Large, color screen, wifi, video / audio support, clean Palm OS
Cons: Battery life, battery life, battery life
After that, it's been mostly downhill.
Now the typical Palm PDA requires almost daily charging and offers little else in terms of value-added usage. Sure the color screen is nice for pictures, etc. but the tradeoff in battery life is staggering. Wifi is also nice add-on for this model, but how often do most people surf the web on their PDA screen? I've done it on my Treo 650 via Cingular's EDGE service and it's not a great experience - sucks up battery life like there is no tomorrow and most web pages aren't formatted to be PDA-viewable.
That said, the TX seems to be a capable performer that makes strides to return to Palm's successful roots while still offering the dazzling array of PC-like features people have come to expect in every device. If you want a basic organizer, search for the Zire replacement or buy a used Vx on ebay. However if you feel compelled to have the latest bells and whistles and don't mind carrying a PC-like device (with ample charger) in your crowded pocket with your cell phone and iPod then this fits the bill.

Great PDA! One of the best for 2003!
Pros: WiFi, High Res display, Stylish, Fast and Responsive, Great for watching movies
Cons: No voice recorder, somewhat weak battery life, slower processor speed out of the box than the T5, its predecessor.
The T|X would be great if you did nothing but watch movies on the go on it, but of course it also has WiFi so you can surf the web (surprisingly good in landscape mode), check your email in a cafe, and of course you can run all sorts of other programs, games, keep track of your schedule and contacts, and more.
I know it's supposed to be a "business class" device, but the multimedia capabilities of the T|X are phenomenal, and at $299 it's cheaper than most PVPs on the market, with a better screen and smaller overall size. This thing is just plain SLEEK.

Junk well maybe nevermind Junk
Pros: it's black and thats about it
Cons: to many to fit on one line
