Sony is putting a new twist on PDAs. Not only does the CLIE PEG-NR70V have a slick, clamshell design with a swiveling display, it also houses a built-in digital camera, a keypad, and a host of multimedia functions. Roughly the size of a swanky cigarette case, this CLIE will no doubt turn heads. But with an asking price of $599, Sony is catapulting Palm devices into the high-end Pocket PC range. This PDA's design is pretty clever. When closed, the brushed-aluminum case feels rugged, and the large, colorful, 320x480-pixel transflective LCD is well protected. You can open the casing to use the keyboard, or you can rotate the screen 180 degrees, fold it back down to cover the keyboard, and use the NR70V like a traditional Palm device. Measuring 5.5 by 2.8 by 0.7 inches and weighing 7 ounces, this CLIE is bigger and heavier than almost every PDA that we've reviewed recently. It slips easily into a jacket pocket but will weigh down your shirt pocket.

The NR70V is a full-figured handheld. However, it is svelte in profile.

Round and round: The CLIE's swiveling screen.

The screen feels extralarge because this model--like all Pocket PCs and the HandEra 330--uses a virtual Graffiti area. As an added benefit, you see your stylus strokes on the screen, which makes it easier to write accurately. As noted above, the screen rotates on a hinge and is fully reversible.

If you prefer the BlackBerry school of data entry, the small, built-in thumb keypad is one of the better that we've tested, largely because the keys are well spaced. Above the keypad, you'll find the typical four application buttons. Between those controls are two tiny scroll buttons, which we found too small and flush to be very useful. Like all CLIEs, the NR70V has a jog dial on the side. Below that is a hold switch, which turns off the screen without deactivating the unit--useful for saving energy while listening to MP3s.

The CLIE comes with a nifty MP3-player controller.Thumbs away! Typing à la BlackBerry.

The big difference between this model and the $499 NR70 is the inclusion of a built-in CMOS camera, which resides just above the keyboard and below the screen. The camera sits within a movable spindle in the NR70V's hinge and can be positioned to point toward you or away from you--great for catching coworkers in natural poses. There's also a Memory Stick slot for adding additional memory and accessories.

This CLIE's cradle is larger than that of most PDAs and includes a stylus holder on the side. True to Sony design, even without the CLIE inserted, the cradle doesn't look out of place on any desk. Unfortunately, unlike other CLIEs, the NR70V doesn't ship with a dongle or a USB cable, so if you want to sync or recharge the batteries, you have to do so via the cradle.

Smile: You're on CLIE cameraÂ… Form and function: Pretty stylish for something as mundane as a cradle.
When you open the NR70V, it's easy to confuse it for some ultramodern cellular flip phone, but unfortunately, this handheld doesn't ship with any wireless features. However, you do get the built-in digital camera (see the Performance section for image-quality assessment) and a host of multimedia capabilities.

Crank some tunes on your CLIE.

The NR70V is powered by Motorola's 66MHz DragonBall Super VZ processor, which is zippier than the 33MHz processors found in earlier high-end Palm OS devices. The faster processor allows for better video playback, but the 16MB of built-in RAM can't hold much in the way of video files. So count on buying a large Memory Stick to store your videos, photos, and MP3s. Yes, that's right--the NR70V also has a built-in audio player.

While the music player works as advertised, the SonicStage software that Sony provides for moving tunes to and from the CLIE is a disaster. Fortunately, Memory Stick Import/Export, another bundled application, makes the NR70V appear as a hard drive on your PC's desktop. Thanks to that application, it's simple to drag and drop MP3s onto the PDA.

Edit documents on the fly--or on the road.

For the business-minded, Sony includes Documents To Go, Sheet To Go, and Presenter-to-Go. These applications let you view and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on your CLIE, then transfer them between your desktop and your handheld.

Artsy types may prefer to snap images and edit them on their NR70V. This CLIE's camera lacks a flash, but it does have some advanced controls, including effects, white balance, and brightness. Once you have your pics, you can view them in PG Pocket or doctor them in CLIE Paint.

Shutterbugs can fine-tune the camera's settings.A cure for beauty, compliments of CLIE paint.

Sony also continues to bundle Intellisync Lite for the PC with the CLIE line. While this program has some distinct advantages--field-level synchronization, for instance--it is more difficult to use than Chapura's PocketMirror, which comes with other Palm devices. The continued lack of Mac support is another thorn in Sony's side. Mac owners will still need to buy Mark/Space's Missing Sync software, which is sold separately.

The CLIE's screen is both large and high-resolution.

Overall, we were pretty pleased with the unit's video playback, thanks to the aforementioned Motorola 66MHz DragonBall Super VZ processor. We were similarly happy with the device's audio playback, but unfortunately, you can't multitask while listening to tunes--the MP3 player shuts off as soon as you tap another icon.

The large, high-resolution, 320x480-pixel transflective LCD makes photos look especially good, although the difference is somewhat less noticeable when using third-party applications such as AvantGo. But before you get too excited about shooting photos with the device, take note that the 100,000-pixel camera is able to capture only 320x240 still images at its highest setting. The pics that we took around the office came out nice enough so long as our subjects were well lit. That said, this is one the more impressive displays that you'll find on a handheld and is easily viewable in all lighting conditions.

However, such a large screen is also a tremendous battery drain. In our tests, with the screen at its maximum brightness level, a fully charged battery discharged in just 2 hours, 53 minutes. On the other hand, the unit has more longevity when it comes to MP3 playback. With the screen off, we squeezed 8 hours, 50 minutes of music from the battery before it could no longer hold a tune.

CNET is wrong for once...incorrect review info

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have an NR70V and I can say that the review is partly wrong. It says you can't multitask while playing mp3s, but you can, and I do it all of the time. All you have to do is go into the Audio Player preferences and check Enable Background Play.

I love it. I'd get another one.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: May its me, I'm not sure, but I've had ny NR-70V since august 2002. It has perfromed flawlessly. No lockup and the hot sync has worked perfectly since day one. I love the a/v features. I have one 128 meg memory stick filled with movie clips. I have another one filled with music. A third one lives in the unit's memory slot for memory backup. This thing wakes up automatically every night at 12:30 am and backs up its entire memory content to the memory stick. That function comes with it. Then it automaticallt syncs to my desktop ( aftermarket app) then at 1:00 am, the unti shuts off and automatically locks its self ( that's built in too). It hasn't burped, locked up or been any less reliable than the 4 palm os pda's I owned before it. Yes it is expensive, but I can leave my $200.00 mp3 player at home. The only negative I found is the lack of a modem. I baight a Psion Ir modem for $50.00 and solved that problem. BTW, I have dropped mine atleast 4 times and it just keeps right on working. If you can find one refrubished or on ebay, get it. If you have one and don't like it, send it to me. I'd love to have a back up in case I drop this one out of a 10 story building.

BEST THING I EVER BOUGHT!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Man, this comment might be late and all, but its very much worth the shout out! First of all I bought this NR70v on Ebay and to tell ya, the deals you get on there! I only got it for $280 And even though the cam is not all that amazing like the new 2.0 megapixel model sony has now is still very very useful. I can't even describe the feeling of actually having a camera with you at all times. Even reminders i put on camera so its like having photographic memory so to speak. SO go out and get your. THe deals are incredible and you will never ever regret spending a penny on it. I never have.

The Best PDA I have ever owned

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After receiving the NR70V as a Christmas gift (lucky me. how many people have friends that will spend $500 on you?), I have not stopped using it. Everyday I find myself using it for different reasons. Oh, ok...I like to play games. The color screen is awesome. The graffiti is spot on. The camera is an added bonus. The address book, notes, memos all come with alarms that you can customize. The battery life is great. If you dock it in the included cradle, you'll never worry about the battery. The mp3 sound is fantastic. They include earbuds with a controller on the wire, so you can keep your unit in your pocket while doing tunes. Using a 128mb MS, it shows up as another drive on your comp, so you can drag and drop with ease. I have dropped it. Abused it. And it keeps on giving. I just can't understand some of these negative reviews. NR70V users can tell that some of these reviews are from people who don't even own one. Shame shame. This is one hot unit. And the price dropping just makes it more valuable for those who have limited budgets. I give 3 thumbs up!

Great corporate tool

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I know that's not Sony's intentions, but this is a great tool for migrating corporate apps that can be used in the field onto a portable device. The camera, voice recorder (in NX), color screen, and WiFi (in NX) make it a great tool to put applicaitons to work in the field. Couple that with the high speed of the Palm OS and long battery life and you have a winner.

Don't buy this thing -- I learned the hard way.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, Sony stopped making them. They're only offered as clearance or refurbished items so don't waste your time. I bought one less than a year ago and haven't really used it because of so many problems. First of all, HOT SYNC is a mess. At first it worked great then all the sudden, it won't finish the hot sync anymore. I've called Sony support at least 6 times on this issue to no avail. Their specialists (the guys you get to talk to after calling 4 or 5 times on the same problem couldn't figure it out). Also, forget the wireless support. I was told by the sony rep when I bought this thing that Sony would offer wireless support for this product in the future --- NOT! The rep today told me there are no plans for this at all since they now sell a $800.00 version of the NR70V with wireless so you won't ever get wireless for your NR70V. Their rep out-and-out lied to me so I would buy their useless product and now they don't even sell this thing anymore. I'll never buy Sony again.

It has all the features.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have studied every PDA on the market. This model incorporates all of the features I could want. A keyboard is a must for me. The camera is a bonus. The quality of the photographs is adequate considering what it is, and quite convenient, as is the video. My only complaint is the cost,(it will come down now because I bought it)and the lack of software (games) available for the Palm 5 OS. There is virtually none. The software included is minimal or trial versions. The directions stink. They try to sell you a manual on top of the $600 initial investment which says little for their customer support, typical of Sony. I love it though, for its features. At least I didn't have to buy and carry 10 add-ons to make it fully functional.

What support???

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Sent my Clie in for a warranty repair on the Memory Stick slot. Also mentioned the loose screen hinge and screws falling out, which I found and replaced. The MS fix was free, but they want $180 to fix the 'physical damage' to the hinge, or only $51 to return it unrepaired. I'm seeing a lot of complaints with IDENTICAL estimates for repair. Seems to be a pattern......

This is for you if...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: ...If you prefer Hugo Boss suits over dept. brands, if choose salmon for lunch vs. McDonalds, then the NR70 is for you. As an executive, I didn't own a PDA, nor a wrist watch, nor cell phone; life just gets too complicated with all those gadgets. I finally ended up needing something to jot ideas/ to-do's. So I ventured in the world of PDA. Sure, many are as practical yet cheaper but the NR70 is all about style. I used it on a 4 month overseas business trip- no problems. I did manage to drop it 2 feet of carpeted floor and damage some pixels but a quick shipment to Sony got it all repaired. It is my first PDA and I've enjoyed it. Those of you who are looking for something as practical yet cheaper should venture to other makes. But for those of you looking for a real sexy PDA that turns heads and that ladies are curious when they see it (trust me, it's a great ice-breaker)then this baby is for you. Have fun. David

Negative Feedback Futile

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been researching PDA's for a very long time. Tried out dozens of them; from the old Apple Newton's to the Zire's. As I come across this consumer review negative feedback page I am shocked to see such incoherent misinformation about the Sony NR70V. One person said they used it for "jogging"!? Since when does a PDA substitute for an arm-band radio or MP3 player? Much of these comments of unrecommendation come from little experience or an unrealization of the technological world. The Sony NR70V's characteristics are very individual (unless of course you take into consideration it's older brother, the NX70V) and therefore cannot be properly compared with PocketPC's or other Palm running units. The folding design is fantastic and helpful for better viewing angles and such, yet it is obviously defective. Many units at stores like Best Buy or Circuit City will have a flimsy screen due to the abuse and overuse they receive on a daily basis, but this does not happen in an everyday situation. However, unless the owner consistently regards his money put into this machine and toys around with the NR70V as if it's armored in steel, the unit's folding screen will stay in prime condition. Store warrantees (I am aware that Best Buy now offers a 4 year warrantee for PDA's) can cover all defections and malpractices of the units. And, in consideration of the 4-year warrantee, most people who use a PDA in the first place would get a new one within 4 years. This is a great PDA. Obviously with a few not-so-lovable characteristics. But this handheld cannot be bashed by people with little base or connection to the handheld industry. Give it a break...well, not literally :)

Fool me once...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Avoid this piece of junk like the plague!! Why? Because I've had two and here's my experience: - the first one was delivered DOA. - the second one ran for a month - beautifully, I might. Then, I was a a meeting in which it literally fell off my lap two feet to a carpeted floor. I picked it up, and it was completely unretrievable, even after attempting numerous reboots (through the pinhole on the back). You be the judge. Would you spend $400 on such a fragile instrument? Fortunately, I had a service contract, so I unloaded it like a hot potato. Buy at your own risk!

sweet.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: this thing is great. with a 128 memory stick, it holds all the music i could want. my only gripes are the video quality of movies (when you transfer them into gmovie) and the quality of low-light photos, but both of these things are excuseable. especailly for the number of heads this thing turns. other than that, this baby is sweet. I'd probably spring for the PEG-NX70V if I had to choose now.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great starting point for first time PDA owners like me. Best feature by FAR is the high-res color screen and the included AcidSolitare. :) There are a few hacks I'll be installing (such as MS Mount to make Memory Stick programs appear as normal RAM-loaded applications, and JackSprat to free up some of that 8MB Flash ROM you normally can't access or play with). A 128MB Memory Stick goes for ~$45 on eBay so you should have NO problems with memory. :) FastCPU is another MUST HAVE application. I've been able to overclock to 90Mhz stable, but I usually run 84Mhz for most games. Next item on the list is to get the Auterra OBD-II scanner package for Clie's (for logging data from my car's sensors), and the My Car software to keep track of oil change intervals, gas mileage, and various other tasks.

Memory card reset problem

Pros:

Cons:

Review: MP3-capiblity with a flip screen, great for jogging and work; I thought. $499 for the pda + $89 dollars per memory stick + $59 service plan at Best Buy with taxes brought the cost up to about $820. I returned it after a couple weeks because every time I would touch the built in key pad the pda would reset the memory card; Crashing the machine. The second one had an identical problem after about two weeks. Counting my additional software i bought for reading ebooks and word-processing (also not recommended) I took about a $500 loss on the pda. Lesson learned, and very disappointed with Sony.

Lots of neat stuff, but discontinued after about a month!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: FYI: Sony dumped the NR70V for the NX70V (essentially the same as the NR70V, only with a slightly better digital cam and a wireless LAN slot). About the NR70V: Any PDA that twists or slides (like the new Palm Tungsten) is bad news. Sooner or later, those parts get loose, and become impossible to fix. The twist screen on display model at a local Circuit City had that problem. It was flopping clumsily on the other half of the PDA, and was no longer laying flat! Forget about asking Sony's tech support to fix any future screen problems. Their tech support reeks to the high heavens; I've dealt with them a number of times. Another beef I have with the NR70V (and all of Sony's similiar NR Clies) is the poor placement of the buttons. If you flip the screen over, you don't have access to the buttons! Come on, Sony created a virtual grafitti area for the NR70V; couldn't they also have created some virtual buttons as well? I really have not been impressed by Sony's latest PDAs. The NR70V is WAY too expensive, and its twisting screen will most likely become a problem within a year. What Sony needs to do is resurrect the "N" series. That series has much better form and function; I currently use a N760C Clie. The buttons on my PDA work great (unlike the T665's ridiculous scrolling nub), and it rarely crashes. But I still hate Sony's tech support.

Good product for personal use.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently bought the NR70V refurbished model from UBID for about $335 shipped. Initially I just want a device I could take with me anywhere I want and enable me to read documents, ebooks, and maybe some word processing. My initial choice was the Compaq ipaq 3835. At that time, I didn't know a thing about NR70V, but for about $300 to spend, I bid on the device. After I got the system, I immediately load the softwares I need. Palm Dragon to change my language set so I could read Mandarin ebooks, Quick Office 6.2 for word processing/doc reading/spreadsheet creating, MS Dict for multiple dictionaries for various languages, KDIC for even more dictionaries, Isilo 3.2 for more ebook, MegaCalculator for different conversions, Acrobat Reader for viewing pdf files, MCFile for editing, and system crash...since the device crashes alot and I wonder why. Those features already worth the money I've paid, but there's even more features I could use. For example, with Vivid, I could capture good quality full motion video with the camera, the mp3 player I havn't even tried to use. I do know that the NX70 is out but NR70 already got all the features I need. I just wish it doesn't crash 10 times a day.

excellent unit, even if last year's model (new one coming in Nov/02)

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great screen, decent battery life (the 665t was just awful). Camera has poor resolution but fun (new one with be x2 the resolution). MP3 does work (I had errors intially when I tried to sync with an old m505 I had). Great design and keyboard is a bonus. Pretty fast unit (66 Mhz Dragonball). Would definitely recommend it, but a bit pricy (get lots though)

Excellent Design Features!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: So...I went out this weekend to decide which PDA I wanted to purchase. Basic functions in a B&W format would do just fine, but boy would I like to get my hands on one of those high-end Clie's. So I'm looking over the entry level devices and my wife says "why are you just looking and the B&W ones? Wouldn't you rather like the color versions?" Capturing the moment, I'm now looking at the color versions when she comments again "Hey look, that really nice one with the keypad and rotating screen is on sale for $100 off" (store display). Not believing my ears I again jump on this rare moment and say "OK dear, you sure do recognize a good sale when you see one. Thanks!" Hug-Hug-Kiss-Kiss. So...Am I happy with my purchase" You bet! Loaded with features that I haven't even discovered yet. If the short time I have spent with it is any indication of what I can expect, I am very happy with my purchase. Excellent color screen resolution. Graffiti writing is very easy. I also like the feature that allow you to see what your writing as you write it. Keypad entry is crisp and responsive. The only negative I have noted is the fact that the hinge makes a creaking noise as I open and close the clamshell. Not sure if this will be and onging problem that may require service. Time will tell. In conclusion, EXCELLENT overall rating.

INNOVATIVE!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's really cool. Best PDA so far. I love it. The color screen is very clear and the camera has alot of functions. The swivering screen is very very innovative. The MP3, like every sony mp3s, have very good sound quality. This machine is very user-friendly. However, the keyboard is way too small(smaller than a Blackberry's) and it justs costs way too much. This device is excellent, yet I would not reccomend it to first-time users.

Excellent features, poor quality control

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had a chance to use this unit for about a month. For the most part it is an admirable PDA - IMHO, head and shoulders above Palm offerings from either Handspring and Palm. HOWEVER - I was not at all impressed with battery life. Granted, I never have used a color PDA before, but I once lost my Palm V and found it 3 months later and it STILL had a charge! I doubt that Sony could live up to that claim. There are certain manuracturing quirks that you may never notice, such as the top of the screen when in clamshell mode - where I was told by the Sony reps is the source of the backlighting - that area appears discolored and uneven compared to the rest of the screen. Also my unit appears to have developed a burnt pixel over the time I've had the unit. I will be sending it to Sony shortly to have it serviced. Furthermore, movies play very choppy and necessitate conversion using the included Picture Gear software and the MP3 player requires that you have a Memory stick (not included). Overall, it is still an improvement over my old palm. I love the high res screen and the ability to use it as an MP3 player (was able to get decent battery life if the display is shut off) but there's a lot of little things that irk me about it and for that reason, I cannot give it an unconditional recommendation.

best palm product on market

Pros:

Cons:

Great concept, but misses the mark

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just bought the Clie after using an HP Jornada 568 for about a year. Since one cannot serve two masters, I must choose which one will have to go. The Sony is stunning at first sight and it is loaded with features that are useful. However, I am mistified why Sony would not update some of the Palm apps like Datebook which still suffers from the lack of setting reminders like holidays that fall onto a day of the week and not a specific number date. Also, there is no freehand notepad app to write notes quickly that Palm has had for some ti me. The inclusion of video and MP3 playback is great but both seem to be very limited with poor playback quality. MP3 songs are flat sounding with errant bits or noise popping in the background. There is also a distinct hiss sound while playing music as well. Video playback is choppy, but not to unacceptable for low res videos, just don't expect much is the key. The camera is also a great inclusion of features to a PDA for taking quick snaps to e-mail. But I have found that you must remain VERY still while taking the snaps, any movement will blur the subject badly. I was also surprised that you cannot move the writing area out of the way to view things like addresses and phone numbers for a full screen view. In fact, the only app I have found that will close it is Kinoma's video player. I do worry about the twist screen failing too soon because of its very nature. The post that connects it is thin and is under tremendous stress every time you lift the unit open. All that aside, I do enjoy using the Sony. It is fast and comfortable to use. Button placement is resonably good and the jog dial is a great addition to Palm PDA's. Sony has included several good apps on both the unit and on the install CD. The screen clarity is top notch though plan on using the backlight at all times unless you are in direct sunlight. The magnesium case is a welcome improvment over other brands that use cheap plastic. I found the weight to be a bit heavy but very comfortable to use daily. The built in keyboard is handy but only if you have small fingers. While I appreciate what Sony has done with the Palm OS, I believe that Pocket PC's will eventually take the lead due to their near seemless connectivity to Windows and the level of sophistication of the built in apps and superior quality of video and audio playback. The ability to take voice memos on Pocket PC's is probably more useful than taking low res pictures anyway. Having been a charter user of Palm based PDA's, I have great respect for them and have aquired many apps that I miss using since I bought my Jornada. Of course, now that Compaq and HP have merged, the Jornada is going the way of the Dodo which is a shame. While comparing Palm based PDA's to Pocket PC's has often been an apples to oranges affair, I think companies like Sony have brought Palms out of the stone age faster and better than everyone else. With that said, I am putting my money on Pocket PC as the future of hanhelds on the market. Two years ago, I would not have made that statement, but with recent developments and improvments to its OS and hardware and more and more companies jumping aboard to produce them, the future looks dim for Palm OS.

A good reason to bring your "camera" anywhere

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got my NR70V about a week ago (NR70V was launched in Malaysia only about few weeks back), the built in camera is cool and everyone who saw it were pretty impressed. One of my friend who uses Treo Communicator is now looking for a buyer to take over her Treo so that she can buy a Sony!

"Very versatile!"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After reading some of the reviews it sounds as if the negative comments expressed were more indigenous to the individual carriers... such as the caller id issue and the changing of the greeting (which initially shows the carriers name.) I have experienced neither of these problems. I love the phone! I am also a technician in the telecommunications field and feel that this is a great hybrid product.

Bang For Alot of Bucks

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have to say that this was a total toy for me. Although I tried to justify its purchase with the fact that it might just help me be on time to my appointments. Well, this thing is loaded with so much to do and also makes keeping a straight schedule. At first I figured its bulky case would impeade, but soon I found no problem with throwing it in my bookbag and going on my day. The slickest feature on this thing has to be the camera. By no means is the camera going to take brilliant vivid colors, but for something on the go for fun, its pefect. If you are someone whom has the money and likes having your whole cake and eating it too, this PDA is the way to go. :)

Extremely Satisfied!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Before purchasing the NR70V, I went over to the dark side and bought a Toshiba E340 Pocket PC. It seemed like a better value because of the bells, whistles, & price. After losing several appointments and todos, having to reset the unit 6 times in one morning, and almost throwing the PocketPC into a lake due to frustration, I returned it (minus the restocking fee), and splurged for the Sony. In defense of Toshiba, I don't believe the problem was with the hardware, but with the OS. I'm back with Palm OS, and can once again have faith in my PDA. If you want a toy for a good price, buy a PocketPC based device. If your data is important to you, and you want a reliable device with awesome graphics, speed, accurate grafitti input, MP3 and MPEG playback, built in camera & keyboard, and tons of software, spend the extra money for the Sony NR70V. You won't be disapointed.

The best PDA I've ever owned!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have recently (3 weeks ago) bought a Sony Clie PEG-NR70V and I have been thoroughly impressed with it every time I use it. The camera is very easy to use and takes great snapshots, the visual graffiti makes shorthand input a breeze and it's great being able to download my MP3's into it and listen to them at work without having to take in a CD player. This model is the best all in one PDA I have ever seen, and has saved me money by me not having to buy a MP3 player or a digital camera seperatly. I would strongly recommend this PDA to any one who has the extra cash to spend and wants a solid great performing PDA!

To Clie' or not to Clie', NOT!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased this pda with very high expectations. Given its' price I expected that it would at least work. Three units later and I finally got my money back. Each of the Clie's had similar problems. The first one had a few blown pixels on the screen. The average person might not have noticed them, but when you flip the screen around into tablet mode it in turn flips the screen. Those defects once hidden in the virtual graffitti area are now on the upper half of the otherwise brilliant screen. All three units I tested had this exact defect. Another problem I found was out was the IR port. Unless you put the nr70v into tablet mode, the IR port will not work because on a design flaw. Plus, even when the thing is in tablet mode, the other palm or pda must be within a inch of the Clie for it to work. Nevermind what Sony claims about 'up to fifteen feet'...that is BS! I really did like the convience of the camera. Even though I could get a much better digi-cam, cheaper, I did love the convience of simply pointing my Clie and snapping away. Remember though, when you read low-rez camera, they really mean the lowest of the low-rez there is. If I could have gotten it to just work...even one of them, I'd be happy. But, with three of them with terrible problems right out of the box...SHAME on Sony!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am much grateful for the hi resolution which far exceds the resolution and texture of the screen on ther palm 505 and 515. The built in keyboard makes data entry faster for those of us who are slow at the stylis. the flip and rotate screen is actually has other uses such as a foto stand and is ver useful if you want to set your handhealed on a desk and still be able to read it. I think that the software for the computer should be more compatable with a grater number of os's including windows NT and win 98 first edidion.

The PDA I've been waiting for...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I loved my m505, but this one has it all. The memory stick works with the cradle to act as a removable drive (no need for an external card reader). Music and pictures are simply a drop & drag away if you understand the software and set it up right (stay away from SonicStage). I can use my high-end digicam & load the pics (via my PC) directly to the Sony. The built-in digicam is great for snapping people for your phone book (great feature!) Books are very readable with the full-screen hi-res modes, as are spreadsheets and docs. I can listen to MP3s ripped from my fav CDs and read a novel with the backlight for 2-3 hours before the battery goes flat (those that complain about the batt-life might look at the brightness level. If set too high, it *will* eat power. The low setting is good for most situations). This *is* a delicate and sophisticated instrument. Sony warns you about the swivel policy upfront. Of course, any idiot that puts this in his back pocket shouldn't be allowed to use one in the first place. It is slimmer than my m505 with the bulky "Slimline" leaher case, and the sexy flip-top protects the screen, so a case isn't really needed. Word of advice: buy this kind of stuff from Best Buy or equivalent. Get the extended warranty. Best Buy will exchange defective units outright. Also, if a product is no longer available, you can apply the entire *original* purchase price toward a different product. Just keep your receipt and packaging. I exchanged my m505 twice for defects, and then again when the Sony came out. I only paid the diff; about a hundred bucks.

Best PDA I've used

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is hands down the best PDA I've used. I wish the keyboard had separate hardware buttons for numbers, but other than that I have few complaints. The screen is extremely crisp and the virtual graffiti is spectacular! The camera is very low-res, but useful in a pinch. One of the best features, however, has to be the extra screen real estate you get in some high-res applications because it can use the area that it normally uses for Graffiti.

Sony does not back what they sell

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought mine at Best Buys. Thank goodness the sales person was familiar with the problems with this unit. Sony does not warranty the twist top. If it breaks, you are out of luck. The batteries are also sealed. When they go in about a year, good luck. The screen also has a tendency to break if you put it in your back pocket. This is also not covered. Sony also makes it difficult to download pictures and music. Photo Suite Mobile works much better than the Sony Product. I still have not figured out how to use their stupid SonicStage. I ended up using an after market program.

This is what Palm Loyal Customers Have Been Waiting For!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It took me a little while to justify the spending of £400 to get my own - but now I am using the new NR70v - It's all bliss. This review is (I hope) no boring logical justification from me, just emotional excitement. I have had two previous palm devices, my last the IIIc. This is incomparable....What I love.... -The display, I use ActNames, iSilo, DTG, and very pleased with display improvements. (Also no backlight for sunny situations - when before I could not read my palm, and also dramatically extends battery life) - I am sure more software will come. -The gadgets; A camera, A remote control, A memory stick reader,A great colour palm, A keyboard, MP3 player (easily send any MP3 using standard Memory Sticks and import facility) -Sony compatability; I take pictures in my Mavica camera and plug the memory stick straight into the Clie to view. -All round I think it's a well made machine. It's a little longer than my IIIc, but thinner and lighter. I guess bigger than the new palms. Palming just got exciting, and hopefully the future is bright and beautifull as the competition hots up. The only people who hate this machine are the Mobile Win device owners. Well hard luck for hopping on the wrong train!!!

Best Palm OS device yet ...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: ... and it is just as capable as any of the PocketPC devices I have worked with. I have had mine (NR70 (no camera)) for 2 weeks now. I salivated over it for some time before buying, and once I did, I had a mini bout with buyer's remorse over the price tag. That was quickly overcome once I got to using it more heavily, and now I'll never be able to go back to my trusty and well loved Visor Edge. ***The only thing remotely close to a complaint is the battery life, but I knew that would be an issue going in. Make sure if you travel that you have a travel charger b/c you will need it daily if you are a heavy user. ***I did have to pitch for a memory stick, but you only have to get the magicgate format if you use the soundforge software. Just use the MS Import feature and you can drop MP3s right to the stick like it was a hard drive. I use a SanDisk brand stick w/o any problems, and it is less expensive than the Sony brand. Too bad I can't leverage my investment in compact flash format cards, but again, I knew that going in. ***Get the Kinoma movie player for multimedia, as I think the included gMovie isn't as good a player. ***I use DateBk5 for my calendar software (the big brother to DateBook+ on Handsprings) and having access to color and the terrific features are worth the price of the product and the memory overhead.

Best PalmOS PDA

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned or played with many PalmOS devices, back to my first PDA, a Palm III, to the Palm V, Handsprings, Palm M505 and M515, and other Clie’s. The PEG-NR70V blows them all away. Please note, however, that this product is only worth the price if you’re like me and love gadgets and enjoy having the coolest/funnest/most cutting-edge product out there. Here’s a breakdown of what I find most notable in the three weeks that I’ve owned mine: 1.The design is incredible. The metal casing provides good, sturdy protection and the clamshell opening design offers many viewing possibilities. 2.The keyboard is adequate if you aren’t comfortable with Graffiti. I only use it when I’m writing a lot at once. Two drawbacks – (a) it can be difficult if you have wide fingers and (b) I haven’t found a way to move between fields on the keyboard, so you still need to tap the screen to type in a different field. You definitely should try it out at a store first. 3.The camera is fun. No, it is NOT designed to replace a digital camera, so don’t buy this expecting print-quality pictures. The strength of the camera is knowing that you always have a quick and simple camera on you at all times. Just last week, I used it while apartment hunting and taking notes. 4.The screen is phenomenal. It rivals any Windows-based PDA. It’s nice to carry around a mini-photo album around of my favorite digital pics. Plus, it’s fun to download movie trailers and other short movies. 5.The virtual graffiti area is extremely well-designed and accurate. 6.The battery life for me has been great. I filled a 128MB memory stick with MP3’s and listened to them twice straight through without significant battery drain. Games, however, will suck more battery-life, but that’s to be expected from any color PDA. 7.A drawback – you have to buy a memory stick. All the included software takes up most of the internal 16MB memory, so factor in the cost of a memory stick into the already high (but worthwhile) price.

Great capability. Low Battery

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the best PDA I've ever used. It is fast and has useful capabilities. The MP3 Player works great, the Universal Remote is very useful around the house, it has access to all the Palm programs, the built in camera takes good quick snapshots. It is faster and more intuitive than the Pocket PC I've been using for the past 2 years. Yeah, it is pricy, but it has so many capabilities that you forget the price once you have used it for awhile. The only real fly in the ointment is Sony's paranoid copy protection scheme on the music player. Forcing you into buying Magic Gate memory sticks is a bummer. The head of Sony must lie awake at night worrying that someone somewhere listened to a song without him getting a cut of the royalties. The SonicStage software that goes on the PC is a piece of junk. If you ignore this only gripe... it is a fantastic product.

Approaching ideal PDA

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had a Palm Vx, a Handspring Visor Edge, a Handspring Treo, and experimented with all sorts of PocketPC devices and this is definitely my favorite device (after only 3 weeks of use, admittedly). The thing no one reports on is the electronic graffiti area, which is REALLY nice. It echoes exactly what you are writing exactly where you are writing it. I was never a big graffiti fan (I used jot) until this. I had always wanted to see exactly what I was writing and get it to come out. PocketPCs do this, but delay showing the recognition (showing the penstrokes for a few seconds) and PocketPC recognition is much worse for me than with graffiti. So this is a big bonus... The screen resolution is now a must-have for me. The camera is interesting. I don't use it as a toy. I use it as a mini-scanner (for receipts, for passages out of recipe books, etc.), but it would be better if the lens were made to be a miniscanner. Adding OCR software on top of that would be cool. Taking fun pictures with it does work. But they are mostly just fun... The foldover design is very nice, very clever. The Hold button is a good ergonomic addition when the device is folded over. The jog dial and Back button allow simpler navigation in the folded position... Having a Sony digital camera, this device works great with the memory stick for it. I can view pictures on a bigger screen (though primarily if they are portrait). It's easier to show people pictures of family than pulling out my wallet...The stylus is much better installed than the other devices I've had, I think... Have not tested the email feature. I also don't care about having it as a cellphone. I'd rather have that built into my watch... Bummers -- Doesn't come with Handspring's Datebook+, which is vastly superior to regular Datebook. Transfer of image files from the device to my computer is weird. Comes with DocumentsToGo, which is not as good as QuickSheet for spreadsheet stuff or as good as WordSmith for WordProcessing.

Gets Better Every Day

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had this for a week and it gets better every day. The screen is amazing. The photos it takes, while low res, have excellent color accuracy. There are a surprising number of 3rd party applications available that can make use of the high res screen, with more on the way. I can even play full screen movies on it! My big concern before I bought it was battery life. Not to worry. I just spent an hour listening to MP3s and my battery capacity only dropped by 8%! This thing is amazing and it’s smaller than my friend’s Casio!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned 3 pdas and this one is by far the most useful device of the lot. I can control all my stereo TV system components, take pictures anytime, and edit MS-word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the go. With virtual pc it will hotsync with my Mac PowerBook and they said couldn't be done. If functional aesthetics are your thing - then the NR70V is for you.

Great for Digital Photographers

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Finally after 5 earlier PDAs, a PDA that compliments all my digital photography. The larger screen (because of the soft Grafitti area) makes this a great pocket photo album. With a couple memory sticks and I can carry around my photos that are easily exported from the Mac (or PC). I can't wait to see what other developers will do with the larger screen. The screen resolution is the best I've seen on any PDA. The digital camera is low res but great for capturing quick pics. The keyboard is good to have, but I still use Grafitti. Jog Dial, MP3 -- all added bonuses. It is larger, but the larger screen more than makes up for it. And it's certainly not to big to carry in my pocket on a daily basis. And since I don't need a case (just flip the screen over) it's much smaller than other PDA with their protective cases. As for the price - yes, a little steep, but if you want the best - as soon as it comes out - it costs a little more.

Pros:

Pros:

Cons:

SONY 615 VS 70V

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This nr70v is over priced, over sized and over rated. Last week I gave in to the fad and spent the $600 for a 70v. After 1 day of used I decided to go back to my Sony 615. The digital camera is basically useless, the screen looks bigger but function wise it’s the same as the old 615 screen. The 66MHz Dragon ball CPU is faster but what the hell, you are not running window on it. The old 33mhz is good enough. If you need a faster CPU go buy an over clocking program ($10). And the size is just too large. I think Sony have to understand that most of us palm users pick palm os because we want it to fit in our shirt packet. Pls. for those that want to buy it think it over. GO BUY A SONY 615 ITS ONLY $299 NOW. IT’S ALL YOU NEED IN A PALM UNIT FOR A GREAT PRICE.

Best I have ever Had

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had and still have a Palm Professional, Palm IIIx, and Palm IIIc. I bought the IIIc about a year ago for the wife. I had to envy her clear bright screen. Now my screen is better. Not quite as bright but better than anything I have seen out on the market in both the Palm and Pocket PC camps. I have it loaded up with tons of programs and I love the camera. No it isn't as good as my $600 digital but I always have this one with me. This is the best pda I have had. I'm used to using the stylus so I haven't used the keyboard as much as I thought I would. But it is kind of fun to punch letters. Has a good feel to it. I feel that the price is about right for what you get. The camera is what really makes the value, but the flip over screen is what makes it sizzle. People love seeing it and are amazed that it didn't cost me more than the $599. I think this is going to be the hotest device out there for some time. Now I'm probably going to have to get one for my wife. Also I think the battery would last about 10 days if I could keep it alway from the daughter. She loves playing games on it. After about four hours of constant game playing it does start to run the battery down. I couldn't look at the other ones for that long. Hope you enjoy your new pda.

Buyer Be Very Ware

Pros:

Cons:

Review: 1st I will tell you that I'm an early adopter and have owned virtually every Palm made, including both the m505 and 515. I was using both the m515 and a Clie 610 (there was a good reason, but don't ask why). I then received an NR70V as a gift. It was purchased from a very reputable store in Hong Kong. After just 2 weeks of use, it began to spontaneously hard reset. I'm talking 10x a day. This was followed by an inability for it to fold flat in the display down position. Not to worry I thought. When I had early problems with my Palms (and there were many), I gave them my AMEX#, they shipped me a replacement overnight, in a box with a prepaid label for the defective return. Sure the replacements were, sometimes, rebuilt, but the system worked. When I called Sony on a Friday, it was for the hard reset problem only. Here's what I got... "THE RUN AROUND." I was first told that they would ship me a box, I would have to send in my 2 week old unit for repair and they would then send it back. They had no idea about how long the whole thing would take. I asked for a supervisor, got a voice message promising a call back and never heard from them again. I called again on Monday, after it stopped closing properly. This time I got a different response. I was not offered a box for repair. No; this time I was told that I had to send it back to Hong Kong for repair. I asked for a supervisor and was put through to his line. The tech person told me that he told her he would return my call. I left a detailed message. It's now 48 hours latter and he's not yet called. Do you think he will? The term lifetime customer value means nothing at Sony. Their "find any technicality so we don't have to deal with the problem," must have been written by the same person who trained the people at Compaq.

Most innovative and cutting age design ever

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I feel in love with this the moment my friend let me use it, and got it straight away to replace my Palm Vx. I bought the T615 for my sister, which was great, and I felt was a big leap over the previous series of Palm - but this takes the cake as the MOST innovative design. The keyboard is good too - I find it's better than most conventional handheld keyboards, because it's got one thing the rest don't - bounce. It's cool, it's sturdy, feature-packed, and a fun little digital camera rolled into one. Get this - I don't regret it, and I doubt you will too!

Worth the $599 price tag

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had been waiting forever to get this unit. I was very impressed with its features, especially the beautiful screen, and MP3 player. The keyboard is very helpful, but not a replacement for a full-size keyboard. The camera I would deem adequate; best for personal use-very fun to use. The universal remote is also very nifty. If you can not find your usual remote, just turn on your Clié and make one! All around, the unit is very much worth the money.

Best PDA device

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is an excellent product. The only thing I don't like about it is the camera. The resolution is not that good. But I know that sony will come up better camera resolution/pixel in the future. I hope that with the palm OS5, Sony will be able to utilize a faster processor. It would be a great idea if the CLie would come in a 64 MB internal RAM and a 512 MB memory stick.

What a gadget!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Its' hard to get excited about gadgets these days. Most are so packed with features and so devoid of character. This is why the Clie NR70V got my attention. It's not just about the features, but also something about the totality of the package that got my attention. After that it was a quick stop to my favorite store. This is indeed a wonderful PDA. The bulk and lack of a modem are the two weaknesses I am not particularly happy with. Otherwise, IMHO, this PDA rocks

Pros:

Cons:

Good all around

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had mine for about 2 weeks now and I use it for storing all my fleet accounts and invoice info and all that. Of course any of the PDA's can do that... but this does it with style! I do Windshield repairs for large fleets of vehicles and now I can take a photo of a bad window and come show the boss and get approval without him having to leave his seat. Works good for me and the manager of the fleet. I used it to snap a few photos of the Clone Wars a few days ago too. Got a cool one of Yoda about to kick some bootay. The few (and major) lacking deficiencies would be in the ease of retrieval of phtos and introduction of MP3's. What I mean by that is that you can't just take a photo and hotsync it to your comp. You have to spend another $40++ to get a memory stick and then anpther $40++ to get a memory stick reader!! I got a 128meg mem stick for $70 and a reader for about $30 (most readers are much more I got the cheap one.) which added another $100 to the already steep price.. and that was just to be able to retrieve my photos and add MP3's to the PDA. So YES it will play MP3's however it requires about another $100 to do so. The sound quality even out of the headphones was very watery and unclear. I have been searching for screen protectors and they don't seem to be available yet. Which is a big bummer as I am pretty active with mine in dirt environments. I had to shape one out of a box of them I had for another PDA.. and it doesn't fit quite right. One more thing that concerns me about this model is with the lack of voice recording and real MP3's ease of use and minimal amount of attachments, I think they will be coming out with a new model within months that will be fairly similar in price but with many more options.

A home run, but not a grand slam

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my third Palm OS PDA, and after two weeks of using it I am very pleased with its performance and utility. It is a far leap beyond my Palm Vx, but as yet still could be better. The Good: The display screen and "soft" grafitti area is awesome. I use Action Names, which is capable of using the whole screen for display. What a difference! The keyboard works fine, even with my big thumbs. The camera is a novelty, but is useful for taking pictures of new contacts to take advantage of the built in address book capability of attaching pictures to each entry. I'm terrible with names but great with faces, so this helps me out. The jog dial and back button are programable on many applications, so their utility is magnified and customizable to each user's liking. And the MP3 player is -- well, an MP3 player. There are also some geewhiz features like the audio/video remote control program, the video clip viewer, and a paint program. The Photostand picture display program is very cool though, as I am able to load up family pictures to take with me on extended business trips. That's a big deal for me, may not be for most. The Bad: There is no modem for this unit yet, so it isn't a stand alone device on the road if you need to get email from home. No wireless capability either, as has been pointed out. And no voice recorder, which seems like it would have been an easy add. But back on the good side, it does everything that my Palms did and much more, and in a much more convenient package. As for the price, if you add the cost of the newer color PDAs and the accompanying keyboards, you get to about the same price, and still no MP3 player. Having said all this, it is important to remember that Sony bills this as a "Personal Entertainment Organizer" which explains some of the lacking power user features. But still, why? I'd expect to see a modified version of the NR70 down the road shortly with the business user in mind. Its a great product and Palm OS users will be more than happy with it, provided they don't expect it to stand on it's own.

Intellisync Lite does not help me

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Intellisync Lite just does not meet my needs. I use Outlook and my calender is on the Exchange Server so that it can be veiwed by my colleagues and updated by my secretary. Intellisync Lite allows me to only sync my calender on the Local Folder. This obviously does not help me with a shared calender on the Exchange server. I had to upgrade the Intellisync to full version as US$50.00 to be able to meet my objective. So if you are intending to use the Clie to sync with a calender that's updated by your secretary - budget to buy a US$50 worth of upgrade of the Intellisync software

A great PDA, especially for Palm fans

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my fourth Palm based PDA, and the best yet. The processor speed is fast (much speedier than the M505 I last used)and the screen resolution is fantastic. I travel often and have already gotten my money's worth from the MP3 Audio player (using a 128MB Memory Stick, I was able to take plenty of music). I have also used all of my Palm based PDA's as ebook readers, and the screen resolution makes this the best and easiest to read I have used. The camera resolution is low (100K pixels), but this unit was never designed to replace a good digital camera. However, as many others have written, how often do you carry your camera along? With this unit, you can snap a low res image that's great for email or simply to help you make a visual log or reminder. The unit is slightly bigger than a Palm M515 or M505, however, I've found it easy to carry and manage (My M505 had a bulky leather "slim" case - There's no need for that here with the nifty rotating screen). This unit has many other features and included software to numerous to mention, however, before you buy do what I did: 1) Go to Sony's web site and explore the online demo and read the online manual; 2)Go to Best Buy or CompUSA and play with the display model. I was sold on the unit after that. This is not a PocketPC, it's a Palm, and the PocketPC fans will never be pleased with this, just like PC and MAC users have their inevitable differences of opinion. For the Palm based fan, if you want to spend the money, this unit is unsurpassed by any others I've seen. This unit is also not for you if you need wireless access or a voice recorder, neither of which I need. All in all, I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. Finally, let me explain my numerical rating: 3 for value because of the $599 price, but I still think it's woth the money. 4 for support because I found the Sony online support to be a bit lacking, however, I've had no problems with the unit and have not fully used support. 5 for qulity and features speak for themselves.

Blows my Palm IIIc out of the water!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I love my new Clie. The Hi-Res screen is great and the Graffiti accuracy is the best I have ever seen in a handheld device. I thought the keyboard would be a great addition, as I used my folding keyboard with my Palm IIIc daily. But with the accuracy of the pen input being so strong, I haven't yet had a need for the keyboard. With the keys being so small, hard and unforgiving, it is extremely hard to type accuractely. The included software is very adequate and useful. The universal remote control software works great and I love viewing my pictures using the included Photostand software. The included MemoryStick and MP3 capabilities of the Clie PEG-NR70V are nice touches to finish off this incredible handheld. Besides, the clamshell design is one heck of a head-turner.

Sony's answer to Pocket PC

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Windows is great for computers, but Sony proves that Palm OS is superior for handhelds. I got my NR70 as an upgrade from my Palm M505. What an improvement! The screen is much better than the M505 or even M515. It's even sharper and brighter than any PPC I've compared it to. The virtual Grafiti area really is helpful, even for 6 year grafiti veterans like me. It plays MP3's, works with Work & Excel documents, is a great organizer, plus works with thousands of Palm programs that PPC's don't. (I have close to 80 different apps and games on mine.) The only two drawbacks are the shortened battery life vs. Palm brand devices, and the extra step of swiveling the screen to use it "palm style." The improvements easily outweigh the drawbacks.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The new Sony Clie PEG-NR70V is the total package. If you can afford the price tag, you will find that Sony left no rock uunturned with he hardware of this unit. The small speaker is cool if there is no background noise. I wish there was more software support for the full screen view; but the unit is so new, a lag in software support should be expected. High versatility and quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Useful for those with many different interests such as the additions of graphics and audio features that my Palm IIIc didn't have. A great new sharp screen that can easily be read in direct sunlight. The jog dial and back buttons make navigation easier over my old IIIc. Also, Graffiti special characters are improved and the additional software and hardware keyboards included provide data entry convenience for most anyone's taste! Many free software or trialware applications are included that nicely demonstrate the capabilities of this fine PDA. The price is what I originally purchased my Palm IIIc for a few years ago ($449), but the Sony has many added features. I did not opt for the version with the camera, since I already have a hi-res digital camera. The printed instruction manuals and the Operating Manual on the CD-ROM provide extensive information. The Sony CLIE website has provision for updated firmware and software and other CLIE technical support. A very nice product!

Bye, bye, Grafiti

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Finally. A Palm with not only a jogdial (once I got used to it, every other Palm felt naked), and the 65K color screen (how can you go back?), but now a keyboard. And now that I'm used to the keyboard, I'll never go back. It's pricey, yes. But this thing is the best Palm out there. I've had too many PDAs to mention here over the last few years. This thing takes the cake. The swivel screen is beyond cool, and not just a novelty. This thing is useful and solidly designed. The craftsmanship is top notch. (You get what you pay for). As far as I'm concerned, I'll never get a Palm without a keyboard again. My input has doubled in speed (and I'm VERY fast at grafiti, but I'm also a very fast typist.) No more screen scratches, far fewer mistakes, and when you open it and place it on a desk, it looks like a little laptop! People at work keep staring at it and smiling. Killer design. Great job, Sony.

Simply the Best I have ever Had

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had the Clie NR70V for 1 week now and I can't say enough about it, Sure it is pricy, but for the extra $200 you pay it is worth it. You have the built in color camera that is fun, I find myself playing with it all the time. The built in MP3 player , and the other day I am stuck in a Doctors office waiting room, the TV mounted high in the air with no way to change channels and even if you could you might offend someone else in the office, I never used the feture but I went to the remote setup and added a NEW device it asked me what the device was, I checked TV and then it asked me for the brand I checked RCA and I saved and then had total control. No one knew or suspected me. I am having fun with it and I am at a point in my life where I can spoil myself with some extras, This Clie far out-weighs any PDA I have ever owned, I just sold my Clie 710c and before that I had a Palm 505, a palm IIIc , I also had a Jornada 568 as well as a Ipaq 3760 . So if you want fetures, the biggest screen on the market a built in keyboard , memory expandabilty, a color camera all in a tight little packedge the Clie NR70V is your bet. Face it for $200.00 more why not own the Rolls Royce instead of the Lincoln.

Over-priced and over-rated

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Love the features but feels like a mini-laptop without the laptop features. Too bulky for a PDA, cannot put inside my pocket with ease. Since the Sony Clie PEG-N760C's price is reduced, this is the way to go for PDA's, for Sony lovers. I am a Sony fan but the Sony Clie PEG-NR70V is just not practical.

Superb Device

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Practically everything about this machine is excellent. The screen is impeccable, the new 66MHz processor has sped up almost every task, the keyboard is very functional (now, inputting more than two sentences on your Palm without a Stowaway keyboard is a reality), the speaker is the best of any Palm device, the Jog Dial and Back buttons are as useful as ever, the enhanced IR has made my universal remote obsolete, the camera is the most fun I've ever had with a PDA, and the unit as a whole is JUST PLAIN BEAUTIFUL. Excellent. Memory Sticks have really fallen in price ($59) and are no longer a liability to CLIEs. Memory Sticks also are right behind Compact Flash (and FAR ahead of SD/MMC) in terms of market penetration and sales, so further price drops and more I/O devices are right around the corner. The 'proprietary' argument no longer holds water. If you are on a budget, you shouldn't be looking at this device as it is the highest of high-end PalmOS PDAs, and carries the pricetag to match ($599). If you decide to splurge, however, you will be delighted to learn that your new NR is constructed as a $600 should be (unlike the iPaq, with its painted plastic body). The entire chassis is magnesium; it is very scratch-resistant - as it should be, since Sony designed the device to double as its own hard case. Lovely. I find it quite hard to believe that the NR70 (non-digicam model) is a mere $100 more than the decidedly mediocre Palm m515. The screen alone justifies the higher price tag, not to mention the mp3 player, 2x faster CPU, keyboard, and overall BEAUTIFUL 21st Century design. If you are looking for the ultimate convergence of work and play, look no further.

Great PDA, but worth the price?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using the NR-70V for 2 weeks now, and i am very happy with the product. The faster processor is noticable, as pictures on my old N710C took much longer to load, and the higher resolution screen makes everything brighter and clearer. In addition the grafitti is very accurate, and the keyboard is *useful for most users, but someone like me with fat thumbs with find them better off keying in info with the stylus. The flip design w/ the screen on the inside is also a plus, for those who don't like bulky cases. HOWEVER, there are some adjustments that any will have to make if switching to a 70V (Along with buying ALLLL new accessories). First off, the contact, date, todo, and memo hotkeys are located on the lower half of the unit, making them unaccessable if you are using it in the closed form, and when opened, they are misplaced and awkward to use, Especially for games. Also, get used to charging long, and charging often. When using the unit w/ the backlight on I only get a godo 6-8 b4 i need a recharge, and you can cut that in half if you are one of those people who will constantly using the camera to capture all of "life's little moments." All in all, I am very happy with my purchase, i like it, and i think i'll be using it for awhile (especially since i have given up all together with pocket PC!!!) and if you are planning on purchasing it, and have the money to spare, i say go for it.

James Bond in a PDA

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Its too big, its too slow, the OS is outdated, buy a PPC, who needs all these features and why would anyone need digital cam incorporated in a PDA? C'mon most people who will buy this PDA will not be using it for business or need the features of a PPC. The reason most people will buy this PDA is because its the future. High tech to the max. I love this thing, never dull moment and anyone who sees me use it always ask the same question. What is it? If you want a more serious business PDA then you may want to look elsewhere (a PPC). But if you want the latest and greatest high tech gadget this is one to get. Its like owning a Lamborghini, its very expensive, gets really bad gas mileage but its oh so much fun.

The Best PDA As Of This Date

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the best PDA I have ever used. The color display is incomparable. Other color Palm based PDA's, Palm 515, Handspring Prism and Samsung i300 do not even come close in display. It is expensive, I paid $569 at Best Buy, but some of it is made up by lots of software enclosed. Just Documents-to Go is $89 if you were to buy it yourself. What surprised me about the reviews at CNET is that most of the negative reviews have been written by people who have not used it or even seen it. The cons that found in this product are: cost, lack of microphone and mode.

Note that these are known as USER OPINIONS. This is a USER'S OPINION.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It makes me crazy to see some quick and ignorant simple statement like "TOO MUCH MONEY" Anyway, I have had this device now for over a week and I feel like I can offer an educated opinion. The casing, hinge, and swivel are very solid. Don't judge by one that has been manhandled too much in the store. As you know, people are rough on those there- some even try to push them beyond the limit. The screen is incredible- even cleaner than my T615. The camera should not replace a regular camera, however a regular camera cannot substitute for the one on this unit either. Why? The camera is ALWAYS with you. If you use your PDA for business as I do, It's always with you. If I want to copy an ad, a phone number, a funny event, an address, the license number of a car, and numerous other things- I can now. Sure, I have an excellent digital camera, but I don't carry it on me, who does. With this unit in your business or personal arsenal, you find yourself saying "Dang! I wish I had a camera right now!" The "Virtual Graffiti" is also incredible. I can't tell you how much my writing has improved because I can see what I'm writing as I write it. The Keyboard is great for two reasons: 1. It is easier for longer stretches and probably faster for those who haven't gotten used to graffiti. 2. It is a good screen saver for those who don't like to scratch up the screen over time.

Definitley innovative but not for everyone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Today I picked up the NR70 (the model without the camera) for 500. I'm still playing around with it but I know that it is a quality PDA. I used to have a Handspring Visor and I'm used to my mothers older Clie so this new style takes time getting used to. When using this thing it's best not to try using it like a traditional PDA, you'll have to get used to this one all over again. The first thing that bothered me was the lack of scroll buttons on the display side when in "normal" (turned) mode and the actual program buttons (address book etc.). Jogwheel is not useless but could be better. I decided to get this one instead of the n615C because of the included keyboard (which also takes getting used to but it is cool) and the included mp3 capibility to replace my cd player on the way to school. This is one of those products you'll either love or hate, just make sure you try one out thoroughly before purchasing.

Stop Reviewing when you don't own it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have read over some of the recent comments, both good and bad and it is horrible. This board is for people who have accually used it and from what I have read, there is only one person, besides myself who has. I do express my opinion her but that is what this board is for. And as for the unit, it maybe different than the Pocket PC and other Palm OS Based handhelds, but it is a good unit. It's screen is good and the camera, though it may not be the res of a digital camera, that is not what it is based around.

Believe it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Contrary to a misinformed recent posting, the Sony Clie NR-70 is currently available. I purchased mine at Best Buy last weekend and I have seen it at CompUSA as well. The reviews I have read here have been consistent with my own experience using this device. It really is the best Palm PDA on the market, if a bit expensive. The Sony engineers put a great deal of thoughtt into this device and it shows- there is even a stylus holder on the cradle. I was sold on it the moment I saw the display- It puts my IPaq's screen to shame. The screen is clear even in sunlight. The sound quality on the audio player is excellent although I can't as yet recommend the Sonicstage PC software that is meant to be used to export copy protected music from your PC to the device. The included headphones aren't so good but I do appreciate the audio controller cable. The integration of the camera with the PDA is really well done, even at the low 320x240 resolution. A pretty cool function is the ability to rotate the image in the viewfinder 90 degrees so you can hold the CLIE like a regular camera. When you do this, the camera button, which is normally on the top left hinge of the device, will be right where it would be on any other camera. There is a built in remote control function but unfortunately it doesn't have a preset to control my cable box, which ironically enough is made by Sony. I hope Sony will update this since it isn't a programmable remote. I really like the Memorystick format. I'm looking forward to the GPS and Bluetooth cards. Hopefully they will add a Wi-Fi card to the list as well. It is extremely easy to navigate programs with the toggle wheel and back button on the left side of the device, something all Palm devices should have. I can launch any program on the CLIE just by using my left thumb. The only serious shortcoming beyond the omission of a voice recorder (which for me isn't a big deal) is that aside from the included Photostand software which enables you to use the CLIE as a digital picture frame there aren't any programs that take advantage of the increased screen resolution or the ability to collapse the Graffiti area. It would be really useful to be able remove the Graffiti area even in the main program screen and in other programs where text input isn't required. I see the button for that function beneath the Graffiti area, it just doesn't work. Also, to be fair, I feel that the synchronization process for my IPaq using Activesync is far better than Palm's Hotsync, but this isn't something I can fault Sony with. Finally, beyond the numerous improvements in screen resolution and functionality that Sony has made, I have to say that the styling on this device is gorgeous. The magnesium case is solid, the keyboard elegant, and it is just amazing to be able to flip it open, rotate the screen, and flip it back down again to assume a regular PDA format. The screen even flips over when you do this. Beauty and function! All that's missing is a built in 3G compatible cellphone. The innovations in this device trully raises the standard for all PDA's.

the cool gadget for the summer

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Finally out! Finally bought. I bought the NR70 first so I can save money (I have a cyber-shot)but then thought; this thing cost a lot already what's 90 bucks more for the whole bang. Already the priced was lowered at Best Buy to $569.+ tax, and it'll drop some more. But, let's face it. It is a "toy" for adults. It has its use(s), but so does the others (less expensive)clie's. If you can afford it then it is a great, fun, buy. I wish it was a smaller and also had a voice recorder. I bet that Sony is working on that for their next Clie, of course you'll end up paying $$$ like you might for this 'lil toy. If you need or just want to have a PDA then get a cheaper one, cause it'll do the same work with less worry about $$$; but if you really have extra money to spend then by all means enjoy the toy. Lastly, the mini-keyboard kinda sucks. The camera is like a cool web cam. Just got it 2 days ago, so I am still feeling it out. PeaCe.

Happy Man

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ok, here it goes! After owning the ipaq 3675, this clie blows it away. For the applications i use you cant beat the clie. Plenty of space for documents, contacts etc. and optional memory stick for pictures music etc. I didnt find myself using the ipaq for music, b.c of fear of battery life, now with the clie and the hold function i have no worries. This clie was a beautifully designed machine, just stop and think of the time and technology put in. The clie remains small, but extremly efficient, u can watch videos, listen to music, play games, and still do everything you need to do for everyday business life, plus in the near future sony is comming out with a gps memory stick. Only thing that would be nice is maybe a better video playback which you will probably never use, and also a voice recorder just for those who actually use that feature! overall i give sony 2 thumbs up, i look forward to more great things, and for the price to drop 150 bucks by summer!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Get what you pay for, sure it is high priced, but it's that good. Yes,The camera is worth the added price, so dont save in that area. The NR70V has a great display and the size issue is from people who dont have one. Ok, Sony should of put a voice recorder in it, but thats all I would ask. An Uber-Palm

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently purchased the Sony Clie NR-70V/U- That's the model with the integrated camera if you're unable to decipher Sony's naming scheme as I am. This is probably the best Palm handheld on the market. I've have owned and used both Palm OS and PocketPC devices in the past and will not debate the merits of one OS over the other. This device is fully featured- the only major oversight is the absence of a voice recorder, something I can live without but others may require. The display is excellent- It easily bests the screen on my IPaq. For those who are wondering, the camera is merely adequate- If you're looking to take high-res photos save your money and buy a dedicated digital camera. Still, having built in is undeniably cool- Makes you wish they had integrated a cell phone and made this into a mobile video phone. And it is pretty neat to be able to include photos on your contact list. The included software is very complete. Stylistically, this is probably the coolest PDA on the market. If you're on the market for a Palm OS device and are willing to spend the money I highly recommend this model.

Individuality!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: People, please, get a grip on reality and on life! Most of us come to these boards to read facts and it is okay to provide your opinions once in a while. But most of the comments I have read appear to come straight from the minds of the ignorant. No one PDA is better than the other. If there truly was a BEST PDA then the others will cease to exist because no one wants it. Every, I repeat, EVERY, PDA has a reason for its existence. And the reason is based on the individual need of the person who is planning to buy it or use it. I have used Palm OS, Linux based and even PPC based units from the super cheap to the fully loaded ones. Which is better? Heck they are all great. They did what I expected them to do during the ownership and use of them. Why did I change around? As my needs changed so did the need to move around and find the PDA that BEST fit the need. Today? Well I use a PPC based PDA because a Palm OS cannot accomodate my individual needs at this time. Will I alwasy stick to a PPC based PDA? I can't tell... don't know what tomorrow holds. My only true comment here is to please, review all your options and choose a unit that will do what YOU need it to do. And trust me... this high-tech current thing won't last. When you think you got the best and the latest someone will come up with a better PDA tomorrow and you just ended up wasting money for the extras you never even needed. Do your homework. Talk personally to non-biased PDA users. Ask them what they like about it and see if you can match your needs to someone else who has the same and review their feelings about the current PDA they are using. Good luck!

Great Prouct - Dazzling Screen!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Having previously owned an IPAQ 3650 until it broke down and having owned and used the NR70 for a week now I can compare both devices. Although both are of similar size I find that the Sony feels more comfortable in pocket since it's narrower and I do not need to carry it inside of a case. Their total screen surface is about the same, but the resolution is much better on the Clie with aroung 148 dpi vs 111 on the IPAQ (Although very few of the Palm apllications use the full screen whereas many of the IPAQ did!)As for speed I really do not notice any difference with the applications I use, if at all I notice the Clie springier since of the light Palm OS. I did experience more crashes and and glitches setting up and using the IPAQ than the Clie, although I admit I found the PPC OS more complete and better integrated with windows and office than my current Palm OS. As for total storage memory now that memory stick are decreasing in price (128 mb for $60) I can also use the CLIE to store and listen to lots of music. Something I do miss from the IPAQ is the microphone to take quick notes while on the cab or on the run.

Palm OS and Sony Continue the Lead

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is an amazing PDA. The Palm OS has proven again and again that focusing on the user experience is what counts. The ultra-fast processor in the new Clie means looking up addresses, checking calendars -- all the tasks a PDA is primarily use for -- are instantaneous. If only the PPC devices could say that. Also, with battery life measured in weeks, rather than hours, there is no question which device and OS makes sense. Anyone who travels for business is glad to know they don't have to lug another charging device with them on the road. High praise for Palm and Sony. I guess with more than 70% of the market share, Palm must be doing something right.

This rating is to counterbalance the ridiculous ratings below.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: People compare PPC2002 to Palm based devices, which is fine, but they're missing one critical point.....BATTERY LIFE. I've owned both iPAQs and Sony Clie devices, and honestly, I would prefer using a device I didn't always have to plug in. I just recently went on a trip to Asia for about 2 weeks, and with daily usage (heavy usage, especially on the flight), my Sony Clie lasted the whole trip without a recharge. Try doing that with a fancy iPAQ. Maybe they've improved battery life since the last iPAQ I've owned but the size of the device is still an issue. Anyways...too much rambling on. Basically, the lesson here is: Don't get caught up by all the fancy features of PPC, instead, take a look at what features you need and the usability of the device. I think if you look at it that way, this bad boy Sony Clie would be very high on anyones wish list.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just got out of the new product seminar hosted by Sony and wow did this machine take a lot of people by surprise. First off, since it is using Palm OS, you don`t need 64mb of memory. The 66mhz processor is faster than the 206 strongarm. Its actually quite thin and compact, almost identical w/ the 760c. Virtual grafitti is awesome. It traces your handwriting so its easy to see how your write and disappears when viewing images to full 320x480. Awesome PDA.

SONY ROCKS!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a student who bought a Sony Clie PEG-T415, loved it! I am waiting for this to come out and to get enought to buy it! First off, I can write my own Java programs for it! Second, I can use the camera to grab quick notes out of books(who needs a scanner or copier!). Third, a built in microphone and MP3 Player, good for notes and Playing my favorite songs. Oh and the remote control feature rocks, I already use it with my T415! Keyboard, I think I could use it, but I love Graffiti anyway. And since it can store so much with my already purchased memory sticks, I don't have to buy a laptop. I can use my PC for internet, much better for that. By the way, I've used Zarus and Windows Powered PDA's(sure they have windows-like software, but it takes up so much of your space you have. Icky... that is why I switched to Palm OS.)

Nothing special!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All the reviews say the same thing: wow, it can play video, has a really nice processor, has a digitical camera and it looks cool. Well, Pocket PCs have been able to play videos since they came out SEVERAL YEARS ago. Nothing special there. As for the processor, this one has a 66mhz Dragonball processor. PPCs have 206MHz Intel Processors. Hm....who wins there? About the digitcal camera, you can buy an add-on for a PPC, or many palm models, so Sony has nothing special here either. The only special thing is the slightly better resoultion screen. And, Palm OS is so weak compared to PPC 2002. Only recently has Palm made MP3 support. But forever, PPC has had it. Also, Pocket PCs come with AT LEAST 64MB total RAM, while this "special" one only comes with 24MB total. If you want to move its RAM up to PPC level, you have to buy EXPENSIVE memory cards. Go with the Audiovox Maestro: for $300, you can get it with all the hyped video and mp3 support, a 3 times faster processor, and not a big bulky fold-up design. Why would you spend $300 extra for this?

BUY AND HANDSPRING

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For about $300 less, you can buy a handspring visor that has 13 times the expansion/device capability at a smaller size. People talk about expansion, Handspring has the best expansion options going today. You can use Memory stick, SD, compact flash or MMC using a memplug. So why would anyone spend $600 this? For the same price, you could by a Handspring Visor Prism, Eyemodule (which is free with the purchase of a Prism right now from Handspring), and 2 memplug modules (CF, SD, Mem stick, etc.) for $350 right now, which is $250 less than this Sony. Come on, who in their right mind would buy this thing and actually get their money's worth out of it. I'll give it 3 months before Sony discontinues it.

Another proprietary Sony

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned several Sony PC's at my company. I can tell you first hand that their support is terribly. There are several reasons why I will not buy a Sony PDA. First, and the BIGGEST reason, is it only supports Sony proprietary memory stick technology. I already own MMC memory for my digital camera, which has 350Mb. Memory Stick only supports up to 128Mb and is, Mb for Mb, more expensive. Second, Sony support flat out sucks. Thirdly, this device is way over priced. Finally, who the heck needs a low rez digital camera on their PDA? What a totally boneheaded idea.

LISTEN!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Many people have been saying that is bad. WHY? With all its features how could you rate it bad? So its more expensive. Then lose the digital camera. Its different?Yes. But isn't that also makes and what has made Sony great? Yes as a matter of fact it is. The only big reason I can see people not liking it is because it is too expensive.

PDA's have to support WLANs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: These devices need to support wireless LANs to be successful. THis is the main reason that the PPC is taking off. The overall features and form factor seem great, to me, however if you sacrifice real features for fluff, you'll fail.

Get A Life!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Sony is, and always has been top of the line when it comes to PDA's. I personally own the N760c and would love to add this to my collection... and for those of you complaining about size.... i really dont think until the advent of holographic projection screens do you want anything smaller than what we currently have now. i mean some of you talk like u want a wristwatch pda with a 20"screen. step into reality people. i doubt youll catch a hernia from an an extra ounce or two. theres no Palm OS PDA more feature rich than a CLIE.nuff said!!

Unlocked the Palm potential!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was really impressed with this device and it would really be all that one would need for daily usage, even videos. It could be a little bit big and the battery life won't be great, but it is one hack of a handheld that could serve any type of users.

Palm has more WAREZ!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: There I said it. PPC is zippo for warez unless you like Morpheus. So there. You can get a boat load more proggies for FREE!!!! PPC - fogettaboutit ($30 a program - no way!) Zaraus - ugh yeah. Like I "really" want to code my own programs. No thanks! I'll take my Palm OS and warez programs ALL DAY!! That is the only reason I bought one with the Palm OS.

A PDA only for stubborn PPC haters

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Wow! What do we find here... A $600 Palm-OS device that tries to be everything to everyone but looks to fall short in almost every area. First of all the main reason for buying a Palm-OS device is the price. This is where Palm-OS devices have the upper hand where you dont need the incredible graphics/multimedia found in the Pocket PC (PPC). But to pay this much for a device which has a low-rez camera (low-rez pics have very limited use anymore.. certainly not for printing). And then theres the memory PPC's have typically 64megs versus this device's amazing 16meg (with 10meg ROM)... Now there's also the ability to use memory stick memory. On my PPC I just use the cheaper compact flash memory. Then there's the statements that Palm-OS devices have many more programs. This is true but dont forget that many of it's programs are written to be used by very low memory Palm devices (2meg, etc) and will not take any advantages of this new devices color and multimedia enhancements. Another advantage of Palm-OS devices is their smaller size to fit in your pocket versus the typically larger size of the PPC devices... well throw this advantage out too since this device they say is larger than most PPC devices. I would place this device in the category of someone who desire's some of the vast multimedia capabilities of the PPC but hates Bill Gates so much they will not lower themselves to buy one of his devices. I really like Sony hardware but wish they'd direct their talents toward an OS that does far more.

The next generation of PDA's has arrived

Pros:

Cons:

People hate it when they buy something and "Then" Boom a new product comes along and makes there HMMM "OLD" device antiquated.. Nobody hates Sony-They just hate themselves for buying that crappy PDA they are carrying with them right now! Sony continues to innovate-For that the whole industry benefit's---Remember, DONT HATE THE PLAYER-HATE THE GAME!

Innovative and powerful palm

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Undoubtedly the most impressive PalmOS device yet. Great features without the unstable, power hungry and sluggish WindowsOS. Size and price are my only objections. Trust me, do not hesitate to explore Palm and Sony PDA's. PocketPC/WindowsCE devices only feature faster CPUs and more memory because they couldn't run on anything less. Try both, I'll bet you'll agree with my observations. So what if this product isn't available yet, we can still have opinions.

Who opened this review?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Reviews on a device that isn't even really out yet, what a dumb idea. The NR70V is going to head the way of Sony's poorly thought through T415. The larger screen area and virtual graffiti areas are great ideas, but the poorly designed flip-twist-fold idea is limited to the handful of people who should buy a mini-laptop instead anyhow. Sony makes those too with the same camera, for not much more than this silly device. Get a HandEra 330 or the new Sharp Zaurus if you want a real PDA with a decent sized screen and many expansion options.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I loveall Sony stuff but for this large of a device I would want it to be much faster with more RAM. Really does anyone want a low res camera with a PDA? I want a cell phone like the TREO. Sony misses on this one. Hey Sony do more USA market research!

Innovating in the right direction

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Not having used the new Clie, I am only assess the thinking behind it. Clearly Sony is expanding the PDA concept and moving it into newer areas. This device is not for everyone, and I think that PDAs in general are too personal a product to standardize around one form factor that will be optimal for all users. Palm Inc.may have no future, but with hardware companies like Sony backing the Palm OS . The OS has a strong fighting chance. Would I buy this unit? No, I will be buying a T615 since that meets my needs. But I will be checking this unit out when it arrives in stores.

It is a new phase of the PDA future

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Whether you like the Palm OS or Pocket PC platform, you can't deny that both are getting better and better. Yes, they are getting expensive as well, but you get more for your money. I have a Palm IIIxe for several years and just can't live with it, but I do long for some of the neat stuff that Pocket PC offers. 66Mhz vs 206Mhz, 16MB vs 64MB, that's all non-sense. You can write a good and tight program codes of 50KB that would easily outperform a 2MB of junk code program. Every engineer knows that. The only people who will benefit from all the PDA revolution are the consumers.

Form over Function Yet Again!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I will concede that this is probably the best Palm based PDA on the market. And with saying that, this is so sad. 66 Megahertz versus 206. 16 MB of RAM vs 64, Palm O/S vs Pocket PC 2002!?!?!?!? There isnt even a question of where my dollars go. In ever catergory Palm O/S based PDAs come up short. Truth be told I wish Sony offered a Pocket PC solution but they dont and thats their corporate position. My position is that Palm hardware and O/S are outdated and until they come to grips with that my PDA dollars will continue to flow with Pocket PC 2002 based PDAs.

Great Features for the POWER USER

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Everyone who thinks its too pricey or bulky is obviously missing the point here. This PDA is designed for the POWER USER who wants all the features and is willing to carry something heavier. Sony makes other PDA's that are thinner and do less. For me, i just drooled when i saw pictures of this thing, Sony makes great screens and quality PDA's (i have the 615c) The new features are all very exciting, wait till you actually see it to make a sound judgement.

to balance

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just wanted to balance some ridiculous negative reviews. PDA Master says Palm OS is alredy dead? While M$ gain a little bit of the market, Palm PDA's are still the vast majority. You sound like the economist who predict economic future: right 50% of the time (wrong 50%). Nobody can predict future so you can't and, no, Palm is far from being dead. Polar says it have a small processor. Well it use the new 66MHz processor and for a Palm PDA, it's very good (most Palm software are between 50 and 500 kb, yes, k=kilo and are half the size of Pocketpc equivalent). Buy a pocket pc? Well, there is a lot more software available for PalmOS. And, as far as I know, no other PDA have a integrated keyboard.

All-In-One

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Must of us rating this product haven't used the Sony NR70V so it's difficult to offer an accurate review. However, based on what I've read it does sound promising for the advanced PDA user. I haven't read any where in the CNET initial review whether or not you can use it as a phone, but if you can that would top it all. A phone, an organizer, a digital camera, an MP3 player, and a MPEG player all in one relatively small package... sounds great!

Could be my next PDA

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been waiting a very long time to find a replacement for my aging, yet trusty PEG-S500C, but I have never seen enough improvements to justify buying a new one, Pocket PC or PalmOS. However, the NR70 might just have it all right. With all those features and stylish design for an introductory price similar to what the N760 used to be, i think this will give the best bang for my buck. The size might be a bit of a problem though, as I am used to keeping my PDA in my pocket or belt case.

Don't Believe What I Write Here

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As with ALL the supposed reviews here, take it with a grain of salt: NONE of us HAVE USED this thing as of yet. However, I write from my first impressions of this with 6 years of PDA exprience. The concept that Sony NR70V has come up with is probably satisfy a number of people including me: it has a color display, good to knockout my former PDA, the US Robotics Palm and the current Palm V. Also, a digital camera and the palm keyboard are the things that I carry around; hence, combining them will definitely help. Of course, the digital cam in this unit is a low-resolution, but it will be helpful when needed and keyboard maybe cramped than the folding keyboard of mine, but still the overall volume of the unit is far much less than a Palm V, Canon Powershot 100 and a Palm keyboard combined. Unless nanotechnology evolves into a major industry, this will be the closest thing you can get in combining all three units. Of course, if the NR70V is too big and heavy for you, get a brief case or a messenger bag. Hence, with the price tag of $600 expected to drop to $300 within the next year, as it is the case with most of the electronic items, this might become my next PDA when I finish my studies. Still, the first impression remains to be seen, so I hope to fully evaluate it when it comes out in a few months...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: You people that are already trashing this thing obviously don't understand the concept of Sony Style. Their use of that term is as "right on" as BMW's "ultimate driving machine." I own a 760 clie now and a dsc-p5 digital camera and let me tell you, it's the little things that Sony thinks of that makes their products special. Great ergonomic, stlylish product design! This product looks fantastic in every way. The rotating display makes this thing extremely versatile looking as it can take several forms, and the keyboard looks pretty cool too. Too expensive and just a fad

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I would think that this newest Clie' is just too trendy, too heavy, too large, too expensive, and too cumbersome to use by your typical PDA user. This model would not be my choice to carry in my coat pocket or on my belt every day. The display, like the other neat features, are very impressive. The fact still remains that all of the Clie PDA models released lately have a very short list of available accessories. It might be a step in the right direction but not the perfect handheld yet. I still have a list of unanswered questions. Will this new model accept the same cradle? Will all of my current Palm applications work on this big, nice display? How much is extended warranty set me back for this jewel? I am certain that the next generation of handhelds from Sony will be much more impressive. The biggest question is "What is Palm coming out with this summer?"

The PDA of My Dreams!!!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Listen up folks, the wait is FINALLY over for those of us who are looking for a SOLID Palm based PDA that will be the PDA of our dreams!!! Why? The Sony NR70 sreies is here and here and it will RULE!!!!! Available on May 12, 2002, this series of handhelds will literally blow the doors off of the competition, ALL of the competition. First let's consider this. The new series features 16MB of internal RAM plus 10MB of Flash ROM (for future Palm OS updates, specifically Palm OS 5). Next, there is the AWESOME Memory Stick slot which will support up to 128MB memory sticks. That's tons of memory for data, photos, MP3's etc. Then there's the screen to consider. A gorgeous 320 X 480 resolution, active matrix, 3.8 inch viewable rotating screen that will sparkle and burst with vibrant color both indoors and out. I'm breathless just thinking about the screen!! Then there's the built in keyboard which some may or may not find useful. I use the Jot add on for entering data so the keyboard will be nice, but Jot users may still prefer Jot. Regardless, the keyboard will be an exciting addition for these units. Then there's the overall construction (brushed magnesium instead of aluminum or plastic). Magnesium is FAR MORE scratch resistent than any other PDA material. The clamshell design is sexy as hell. This PDA is a true laptop replacement. I have been a Handspring Prism owner for two years. I have been DYING to buy a new PDA for about a year now and I haven't. Why! I REFUSE to buy a Pocket PC based handheld for several reasons (bulky, poor design, poor battery life, Bill Gates, etc). Palm and Handspring have completely fallen to sleep at the wheel. I find the M505 to have the worst color screen on the market and the M515 not much better. The Sony T615 screen is "foggy" at best and the scroll button is HORRIBLY designed and useless. The new Sony NR series addresses all of the issues that I hate about Palm based PDA's. I pre-ordered mine from Sony an hour ago and can't wait to get my hands on one!!!!! These new devices will literally fly off the shelves!!!! Folks, the wait is over!!!
