Sony CLIÉ PEG-NX70V

Entered CNET Catalog: 01/20/2003

SKU: PEG-NX70V

Manufacturer: Sony Electronics, Inc.

Manufacturer description

The CLIÉ PEG-NX70V continues to shatter the notion that handhelds are simply digital organizers. Powered by an ARM-compliant processor and enhanced by the new Palm OS 5 operating system, this new device enables users to take photos and record video clips, record voice memos, and wirelessly browse the Internet on a Wi-Fi (802.11b) network with an optional Sony wireless LAN card-in addition to playing MP3 audio files and video games. The new handheld features a host of Sony's signature technologies and designs, including the highest resolution color LCD screen (320 x 480 pixels) available for a Palm-Powered device, the popular flip-and-twist LCD screen design, an integrated MP3 player, a built-in AV remote controller application, the Jog Dial navigator and a Memory Stick removable media slot. The CLIÉ PEG-NX70V handheld is the first device with a digital camera that can capture both still images and video clips. Located on the hinge connecting the screen and keyboard with a maximum effective resolution of 310, 000 pixels, the CLIÉ PEG-NX70V model's digital camera features 2X digital zoom, and can take VGA size images (640 x 480 pixels) and record MPEG4 compression video clips. On a 128MB Memory Stick media card, users can store up to 60 minutes of continuous video (160 x 112 pixels). To ensure that candid moments are captured as quickly as they happen, the digital camera was designed to take snapshots or video clips with a simple click of the Capture button located on the side of the device. Wireless Internet connectivity makes its debut on the CLIÉ NX-series handhelds in the form of an integrated communications slot that accommodates the optional PEGA-WL100 Wi-Fi (802.11b) modem card. Capable of transferring information at a maximum of 11 megabits per second, this new device enables users to browse the Internet, send and receive e-mail (POP3 and SMTP), and wirelessly HotSync operation with a PC.

Product summary

The goodThe good: Large swivel screen; built-in still camera, video camera, and keyboard; Wi-Fi option; great mix of software.

Following up on its groundbreaking but slightly flawed NR70V, Sony delivers the NX70V, which has a design similar to that of its predecessor but offers an improved interface, better performance, and additional features. The result is a more polished device that is arguably the most capable--if not the most compact--pocket computer on the market. Is the NX70V perfect? No, but it is that rare piece of expensive technology that seems to merit its price tag. Sleek and silver, the CLIE NX70V is the closest thing to sculpture that you can carry around. The case has a textured feel that contrasts with the smooth, shiny finish of those of its competitors. With just about every imaginable feature and a few pleasant surprises, the NX70V is one of the largest and most expensive PDAs on the market. In fact, we had trouble deciding whether it was a huge handheld or a micronotebook.

Measuring 0.9 by 2.8 by 5.4 inches and weighing 8 ounces, this CLIE is longer, thicker, and heavier than Palm's Tungsten T. However, Sony has put the extra room to good use, endowing the NX70V with a large, 3.9-inch screen and a minikeyboard that makes data entry so easy that you can forget about Graffiti.

The sizable Sony is larger than your average deck of cards. The CompactFlash slot makes this PDA a bit stouter than previous models.

It takes but a second or two to flip around this CLIE's screen, transforming the unit from a traditional, touch-screen machine to a keyboard-centric system that resembles a small laptop. On the downside, the 5mm keys are puny, but since they're spaced 2mm apart, thumb typing is tolerable. We liked the fact that the fold-up screen can be used as an easel, so you can prop up the CLIE NX70V. The bad news is that Sony skimped on the stylus, which can't be removed from its holder while docked in the synchronization cradle (the cradle blocks the stylus slot's opening).

The aforementioned cradle is good for syncing at your home base or your office desktop. Travelers can use the NX70V's converter, which plugs directly into the AC adapter and the USB cable, for charging and syncing without the cradle.

Thumb board: This swanky keyboard offers an alternative to Graffiti. The CLIE can rest in its cradle at home or sync via a dongle while on the road.

On the screen's hinge sits a full-motion video camera that does surprisingly well with four different white-balance routines and a variety of artistic effects. The 310,000-pixel lens swivels 280 degrees to catch shots from a variety of angles.

A new addition to the CLIE design is a CompactFlash Type II slot. This port accommodates another new item, the $150 Wi-Fi PEGA-WL100 wireless-networking card. Don't expect the slot to work with other CompactFlash accessories, though; such products won't be compatible with this CLIE until drivers for the devices have been written. From the start, the CLIE NX70V sets a new standard for Palm-based handhelds. Inside, you'll find the most up-to-date hardware: an Intel 200MHz XScale processor and 16MB of RAM, though only 11MB are available for use. Combine this processing power with Palm's OS 5.0 and Sony's high-resolution screen, and you have one capable handheld.

As noted, the NX70V sports an improved interface over the NR70V. In addition to a new category listing to the left of the program selections, the main page is less cramped, and there's room for a useful program list at the bottom. As with the previous model, the Graffiti-input screen is part of the display, meaning that you can write on it or hide it in order to make better use of the screen's real estate.

Like to see a menu? Sony vamps up the NX70V's interface.
All the usual personal-organizer features are here, including a calendar, an address book, a to-do list, an alarm clock, and software that allows you to sync with Microsoft Outlook (sorry, Mac users, you'll have to purchase an extra software package to sync with your machine). E-mail and Web browsing are available, but you'll need to purchase Sony's aforementioned Wi-Fi PEG-WL100 data radio, which slides into the back of the unit, to tap into such capabilities. The surfing experience isn't quite as fast as what you'd get from a notebook or a desktop computer, but the freedom to roam without wires is liberating. However, we wish that we could view sites in landscape mode--horizontally--as well as access Java-enabled pages. It's also worth noting that the radio adds another half inch to the CLIE's already substantial size and partially obstructs the unit's camera.

Speaking of that camera: video and audio are the icing on the cake for the CLIE NX70V, and Sony largely delivers on its promise to merge mobility with entertainment. In addition to taking instant voice memos, the handheld plays MP3 or ATRAC3 sound files. On a critical note, we feel that the NX70V is a bit volume-challenged. Though the audio is rich and vibrant, it never really got loud enough with the included headphones to block out background noise. At least the CLIE comes with an MP3-player controller that lets you navigate, select, and play songs without having to open the unit.

Internet explorers, take note: You won't be surfing without this Wi-Fi adapter and a wireless network.Camera obscura: The wireless card partially blocks the unit's built-in camera.

All in all, we were impressed with the full-sound minimovies that the NX70V made. With a resolution of 160x120 pixels, these clips are pretty small but come out looking smooth and fairly detailed; the optics in this CLIE's camera are a definite step up from those of the previous model. Unfortunately, any video created on the NX70V is saved in Sony's proprietary MQV format, which is not supported by most media players. (After some digging, we found that MQV files will play with QuickTime 6.0.) The clips take up about 1.5MB per minute, so they must be stored on a Memory Stick, which isn't included. The camera can take larger still images--up to 640x480--but the focus is slightly fuzzy. The unit lacks a flash, so the lighting has to be very good, or the pictures come out grainy.

Most PDAs cut corners on software, but this is the CLIE NX70V's strong suit. In addition to Sony's version of Palm OS 5.0, the NetFront Web browser, and CLIE Mail, the package includes a CD that's chock-full of programs and utilities. The best of the bunch are a selection of games, a world clock, an image album, and a remote-control app. As good as the software is, each application needs to be installed separately, which is a bit of a drag. Overall, the CLIE NX70V performed well. With its aforementioned 200MHz XScale processor, it was more than responsive enough and outperformed a DragonBall-based Palm handheld on similar tasks. This Sony did have a slight delay, however, when returning to Web surfing after checking an appointment and making a note, but it handled the transition fine.

Fashion pose: You probably won't use the Sony with its screen swiveled like this, but it looks cool.Bright idea: We thought that the CLIE's screen was one of the brightest and the most colorful that we've seen.

In an informal performance test using Kinoma Player, the unit fell into place just behind the Palm Tungsten T, which also runs Palm OS 5.0 but sports an ARM-based processor. Running Kinoma Player's built-in performance test, the CLIE produced a maximum frame rate of 355 frames per second (fps) on a low-res movie, compared to the Tungsten's 485fps.

Without a doubt, the screen is the center of attention, and it is a beauty. The 16-bit display doles out a stunning 320x480 resolution and an excess of 65,000 colors. Bright, sharp, and with subtle color variations, it's one of the largest and highest-resolution handheld displays.

However, the screen is a major power drain. Nevertheless, with the system continuously playing MP3s, the NX70V lasted for 4.5 hours on its rechargeable, lithium-ion battery pack. On the other hand, the CLIE made it through more than 7 hours of stop-and-go computing, which means that you should be able to get a very heavy day of use out of this PDA before having to recharge.

What a change!

Pros: Video and voice recording, beautiful 360x480 screen, excellent 65k colors, camera can swivel 180-degrees, MP3 player, CF and MS slots, remote control feature, finally a Clie with HotSync cradle!

Cons: Heavy, a bit too large, small memory space (16MB only!), no built-in WiFi, AeroPlayer not supported

Review: An excellent Clie handheld with lots of features that outshine the competition. Most significant of these is the 320x480 screen that has a brightness eclipsing many other similar top-end PDAs.

Furthermore, it comes with the Clie RMC (free!) which is powerful and effective in controlling Sony TVs and VCRs. This is a real competitor to the popular NoviiRemote app, although only for Clie PDAs.

Best of all (particularly for office-based ppl) is that Sony finally included a cradle for the NX70v. All this while, I have been using Clies that come bundled together with a HS cable but this is the first one with a cradle (since my days of using a Palm PDA!). Sony should have included this essential item for all of their handhelds!

One great feature is voice and video recording. This is very handy when you wish to capture special occasions but not in still-mode. The TJ37 that i used previously may have built-in WiFi (something not found on the NX70v unless you purchase a WiFi CF card) but it loses out when recording is considered. Since MS comes with sizes of 512MB, 1GB, and even 2GB, storage of voice and video recordings is a breeze on this handheld without having to worry about memory loss.

EXCELLENT a must have

Pros: Fast, Eye-Catching, Powerful

Cons: Very bulky, fragile

Review: I have had it for over a year and love it. I play DIVx movies with dvd-like quality on a 256 card. The huge screen kicks for anything. A very fast processor that handles video like a pro (all PIM apps fly!). Only thing i dont like is the heavy heavy wieght and the bulkyness (it wieghs my pants down!!)

I half expected to open the box and be confronted with dozens of "you have to buy this" and "*requires extra purchases" but that was not the case. The only addition to the CLIE was the LAN card. It is definetly worth it. When it comes to the NX70 there are no "IFs" and "BUTs". Its a powerful little thing

Unimpressed

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Im a student and I bought the nz60 for connecting to the wireless network on my campus and for organizing my various classes etc. This product was poorly designed, as the flip screen was extremely prone to damage. the "magnesium casing" broke after only about a month of use. Moreover, the WiFi card cost me $100, and sony made it so that you are trapped into buying their card. I saw a cf wireless card for 20 dollars after rebate-now there is good pricing. I had to reset occasionally, but it synced with my computer very well. I was a little diappointed with the file transfer- you have to use the sony software to move anything onto the clie. This is a pain. Last, you can only run one program at a time except for music in the background, which slowed everything else waaaaay down. Im moving to pocket pc- maybe the axim. Unfortunately, I cant get it right away because of sony's overpriced wifi card. It needs more ram, better processor, and a pocketpc platform. On the bright side: great screen, worked well on my wireless network. Also liked the remote control for my mp3s once i went through the hassle of gettin em on there.

I wish I knew before I buy this PDA.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Something I dont really like about my clie is that, that magnesium case scrapes very easily so you have to take extreme care. Before this clie I had the Palm IIIc and don't have to worry about it getting scraped. I buy this clie for the features it have. But we have to admit we aren't to be listening to music and taking photos all the time. And on top of that just to have 30 mp3's stored on my PDA I had to buy a $100 128Mb Memory Stick. So lets eleminated the fact this PDA has camera and mp3 player. If you do this you will have the same $300 Sony clie.

Your PDA of Choice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: PPC has more MB, but absolutely lacks ease of use, stability, and program choice. (There, the standard arguments are out of the way) Camera is good enough for fun and catching instant moments, video as well. Processor is fast, running an on-call HVAC business using just the handheld is a snap (Docs to go, invoicing software). Installed ganes include Lemonade Tycoon, Monopoly, among others. If this unit is eventually able to accept a flash OS6 upgrade, and the MB gets increased, Palm OS and Sony wins. My PDA history includes 3 Palms, 2 PPC, 2 Handspring, and 2 Sony.

Clie NX60 on clearance

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wanted to buy a Clie NX70, but when I got to the store I found out that the NX60 (which is the same unit minus the camera) is being heavily discounted. Apparently Sony is just going to focus on the NX70. But when I say the price ($299) I couldn't pass up the opportunity to save money -- plus I already have a good digital camera. I've had my Clie for 1 week and I really like it. Migrating my data from an old Palm wasn't easy, but it was well worth the work. You won't be dissappointed in getting this unit -- unless you really want to spend the extra money for the camera feature.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was used to carrying my small Handspring Treo in my pocket, so I didn't want something too bulky. And I didn't want the instability issues that my friends have complained about with the Pocket PC, which they ususally leave on their desks. But after trying the Sony, I was sold. Best of Class

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've gone through a couple of different PDA's from Palm to Handspring. And the NX70V/U is by far THE top of the line!!! Packed full of features, a good MP3 player, and for it's size, a darn good camera. I really like the interface, it's easy to navigate and pretty easy on the eyes. It is a little more than all the rest, but it's worth it. Like others have said if you can afford it, Buy it. The only thing I had a problem with was the memory stick. To play MP3's or Atrac3's you have to a MagicGate Memory stick. Took me a day to figure that out, and the morons at BestBuy didn't help either. Of all places it was a clerk at Sears that got me straight. Either way, there really is no better.

Cons:

Review: My third handheld (Palm Vx and Clie T615C) and what a leap forward. Love the OS5 and the features this badboy packs. Not one of the smaller PDA's you'll find, but I guess you can't have everything. I get a huge kick out of the WiFi, too. $19 adapter from BestBuy. The screen is amazing and the camera is very cool (couldn't justify the added $300 and weight for the NZ90). I truly can't understand the knocks on the NX70.

Needs extras to be perfect.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned nearly every PDA available, always struggled with size vs features, so I opted this time for features. The screen is beautiful, the virtual silk grafitti area should be on all Palms included programs are nice, although not near enough RAM to use them. Swivel seems strong. The only negatives I have encountered can all be fixed with the right 3rd party software. The original system font was very thin and hard to read, I purchased a program that allows you to change the fonts. No today screen like on PPC, so I found a freeware program, and the launcher did not seem to fully use the Hires screen, so guess what I found a third party launcher that is fully customizable. Now I have the ease of Palm with all the features of a Pocket PC. Plus a camera, built in keyboard, MP3 player, and voice recorder, what more could you need. As for size, well my old Franklin planner wieghed about 5 lbs, my digital camera is 1 lb my voice record was 1/2 lb and my Mp3 player was 4ozs. Seems petty to complain about a few ounce difference between PDAs

Best organized I've ever owned

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've tried all types of organizers and I've owned most of them. I can say that this is easily the best organizer I’ve ever owned. I use nearly all of the functions on this device daily. I’m an auditor for my company, so I take pictures. I use the video function for some meetings. On car trips I listed to mp3’s through my cars cassette deck. (With a cassette adapter.) I keep product specifications in the memo category. I have Training schedules (Word and Excel) and procedures in the “Documents to Go” function. Not to mention most of my “old palm favorite” programs have been ported to OS5. This device bridges the gap between the PALM and POCKET PC. PALM has better organizer functions, and POCKET PC has better multi-media. This device has them all. I have own it for 5 months now and don’t regret a thing.

Awesome PDA with tons of features...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned three PDA's. A m505, Clie 615, and now the NX70V. This is one of the best. It takes some getting used to with regards to the keyboard but other than that its a great PDA. Very fast processor, nice camera. Both a memory stick slot and compact flash for a wirless card. With the MP3 player and camera it's an all encompassing device. The pictures aren't great, but I'm not using it as a camera replacement. It comes with tons of software that is very useful. Doc2Go, WorldMate, WACLock, amung others. It isn't the most compact device, but it packs a lot into a little package. The screen is beautiful with great resolution. It isn't for everyone, but if you like to have a little more laptop feel to you PDA and a lot of expandability, this is the one for you. All in all, I give it a 9 out of 10.

Expensive, but handles almost anything

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, it is a little heavy, but I haven't found it too much to bear. Only when I consider that I also carry a cell phone and sometimes a higher pixel digital camera with me does it seem like I'm carrying around too much stuff. I would like to see an analog modem and more periperhals like a full size keyboard. This is my first Palm based unit. I used to have a WindowsCE brick that served me well until it became highly unreliable rendering it useless. Palm based units have come a long way. I use practically every feature it has and I'm very impressed with its performance. I would like to connect file transfers via IrDA besides just synching, but it's not a major issue. I use a Mac running OSX and it's been a pleasure to find something so compatible. Unfortunately many software manufacturers assume that you're running Win platform and don't provide files immediately available to install into the NX07V without running a Win installer. I love that it that the screen swivels to protect the surface and keyboard, which allows for faster data entry. I love my Clie.

Awesome but a little bulky

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It does everything and I like it alot. My only problem has been the size. I am used to wearing my Palm in a belt clip. This unit is really too bulky to do this. I have also found the interface to be a tad unstable. In my first two week I have had to reset the unit twice. I have never had to do this on a Palm device. All in all, apart from the size, it is awesome.

DO NOT BUY CLIE

Pros:

Cons:

Review: THE FOLLOWING REVIEW APPLIES TO THE PEG-N760C. I bought my PEG-N760C about 8 months ago and I wanted to write this mail to you just 2 months after I bought it. I noticed that the screen on this unit is very sensitive to scratchs, I had many other models, mainly " 3COM Palms", before, and the screen was very scratch resistant, not true for my SONY though. The second aspect is the material of which the external case is made of, the back of the unit is very scratched, and don't get me wrong, I take extremely good care of my things. The third thing that is happening is that the screws are coming out of the unit, I'm refering to the three screws that go on the right side of the unit when seen from the top. Is this normal? I would find this hard to believe, but it is TRUE. The fourth problem and actually what ignited me to take the time to write this, is that even when I do a clean install of Windows XP and of Palm Desktop from the CD that came with my SONY CLIE, and I try to Hotsync, I may be able to do it two or three times, but then, when I restart the machine, or something else happens (I don't know what), I cannot do Hotsync again. Whenever I try to do so, Windows XP comes in and "detects" a new hardware that will not be able to install EVER. All Windows XP says is that the hardware could not be installed, not even recognizing that it is a Palm conected. I wrote this to SONY support and they were not able to help me at all. What does this say about a company that is trying to position itself in the handheld market?

The best PDA for now, period!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This one has it all, beautiful form factor, camera, voice recorder, lots of memory options, killer screen, and great keyboard and swivel screen. Only missing lots of memory, with 16meg, but due to Palm OS 5 limitation, not SONY. Needs to be fixed.

Seems great--but free software lacking

Pros:

Cons:

Review: You know, this is my first PDA; and probably this is silly of me, but it's aggravating, just doesn't sit right at all that I'd have to BUY access to SONY's tutorial on advanced functions. Like, I can understand why I'd have to BUY a third party tutorial (one of the IG kinds of books for example) but that the VENDOR sells how to use their $600+ machine...well, that just is rude! And it's disappointing to me that this thing doesn't come with ANY kind of free game. The Install CD has software on it -- trial versions from 3rd parties that I can BUY but gee-ma-nee, even Windows comes with an elementary set of games...like solitaire so I can be amused while sitting (for endless hours it sometimes seems) in airports between flites. OTHERwise this gismo seems to be quite a nice little machine. It isn't too big or bulky; provides me with an alternative to the laptop; has a display I can (for the most part) see without putting on my reading glasses (a big plus to this 40+'er) and basically does what it's advertised to do.

This is the best toy I've ever had!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For my purposes, this is probably a little more than I needed to spend, but it works great and I have no complaints. Downloading software is a breeze and I especially like the way the graffiti feature works, since the keyboard is a little too stiff and compact. This thing is definitely an attention getter and I'm glad I held out.

Robust Feature Set

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Basically, when comparing to PPC, you've got a bastardized version of Windows running on a handheld. MS has emulated a very mediocre OS and ported to PPC. MS can afford to keep trying with PPC because they simply have the cash to do so. Sony has done far more with much less and done very well. As far as support issues go, Sony has a long way to go. This is a great device that desperately needs Mac OS support from Sony.

My Favorite PDA Yet

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just received my unit yesterday. Wow, the display is even better than my N610C! I didn't think it could any better. My only complaint, and this goes for all of them, is if a company says it has 16mb, it SHOULD HAVE 16mg not 11mb. I find that to be false advertising. The Sony representative agreed. Otherwise, if you are a "power user" like myself, but it.

Great PDA for the price but too bulky

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a great PDA but it is a little too expensive and bulky for a traveller. As a college student I would recommend all my friends to get this PDA as it combines work with entertainment because it incoprates a mp3 player and a camera eventhough the camera is of not much use to me but it is really interesting to have it as people would tend to find it interesting to play with. The display is great but the internal memory of 16mb is too small. For mp3 lovers you would need to spend about 100bucks to get at least one 128mb memory stick. Overall it is a great PDA wih tons of features it kicks Palm PDA big time but it is a little too bulky and expensive. If you have the money this is the PDA for you. I just love this PDA but i just wish it would be as small as the Tungsten T.

A Small detail about movies !!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been using this PDA since last December. I think camera is the coolest stuff on this PDA, except there is a serious problem w/ the exporting movies. After I spent one and an half hour w/ a sony techician, he concluded that I can not export movies from memory stick to my pc (according to image converter manual that can be done). It seems sony forgat someting movie formats can not be choosen. If it is true what is the point of having movies on the memory stick.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's awesome having a 200mhz processor in the superior, more efficient palm os. It's a lot snappier than the Jordana or iPaq, has great battery life, and i use the camera 24/7. Although it was hard making the initial purchase, with such a high price tag...now that i've had it for a while, it was well worth it.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was about to buy one of these super-attractive PDAs. But then I went to Best Buy, and I saw the display model. After having it just a few weeks, it had broken at the hinge, just as I had feared! Now I must decide between two lesser PDAs: the e740 and the Tungsten T.

Really great, really fancy, really expensive

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Obviously for the $600 price tag, someone could look into getting a low end or used laptop, but there's no way that a laptop is going to do all that this can for the size and price. The camera is great for me. I used to take Polaroids for reference shots at work and now use the built in camera. Movie making on it is not the fanciest thing around (you can play the movies in Quicktime, but will need something to tranfser them into another format if you want to open them in an editor - I use Discreet Cleaner.) Of course all the wonderful Palm features are there and work just like they always have. The MP3 player is a great little feature, but naturally you're going to need a $20 to $80 memory stick to use it, which is probably the only bad thing I would have to say about the device. Some people complain about the size, but it's fine for me. Most other devices, while small when you first get them, get to nearly the size of the NX70 when you put a hardcover on them. The screen is fantastic. In some ways it's better than my laptop and it's far and away better than the other color PDA's I've seen around the office. About my only gripes are very technical in nature. It's a little hard to find out nitty gritty details about some of the items on the device, like what frame rate the movie maker shoots in. These are really only problems for the the truly geeky of heart like myself and they most likely won't affect the majority of users. Overall a great toy, that ends up being a very useful tool.

Toys For Big Boys

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you take the time to look through all available Palms, there is nothing that comes close to the NX70V. Remember folks, this is a business tool, not a gaming console, as Pocket PCs would have you believe. 16 MB RAM is dissapointing, but if you can afford the price tag, you can afford an extra 128 MB Flash RAM. As this is a new product, support is a bit on the short end, but this will take care of itself given time. The wirless NIC will fit just fine on my home network!

Excellent feature set, fast,

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Sony has done it again. The NX series exemplifies the next generation of Palm OS devices. While some would say it's just an incremental upgrade from the NR series, (which in many respects, it is) its ARM processor and Palm OS 5 create a far more integrated, stable, speedy, and interesting operating environment. Stock, it is filled with features and goodies that will please most, but with many third party developers already providing Palm OS 5 compatibility, incomaptibility is really no longer an issue. Many programs running under PACE are either the same speed or marginally faster than their Palm OS 4 counterparts, but those that take advantage of ARMlet technology just scream. If you are upgrading from an NX, it's not a real value, but if you are upgrading from just about any other Palm OS device, you won't be disappointed. It's not revolutionary, but evolutionary. For entertainment, business, and just plain PDA enjoyment, this can't be beat.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The "CLIE" for the total price it will end up costing $800.+ for accessories you will need to the "basic" features, is not worth it. Try the dell Axim X-5 or just buy a laptop! At least SONY could have notified me on the box "please spend some more of your MONEY" & buy a memory card, so that you will not be disappointed when you take it home, expecting at least the basic features or less, for the price you paid for it & instead getting the TIME & ALARM CLOCK FEATURE!

Best gadget I owned!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been waiting for this to be released. It's nice to have a still and video camera, a pda, calculator, alarm clock, an MP3 player, voice recorder, remote control, etc. all in one handy unit. First of, the still camera, it's nice to have a picture of someone you just met, you'll have something to remember his/her name and what the person looks like. Second, the video camera is usable, I'm not expecting much from this feature but it really surprised me. It can take longer (albeit better) video than my F505, only limited by the amount of memory storage. The MP3(or Atrac) player is great ... I can transfer from my collection of MP3s in my harddrive in a matter of mouse clicks. The only con is you're limited to the amount memory from the memory stick which is only 128mb ... but still, it can't be beat. Another very useful feature is the voice recorder. I always use this (with permission of course) during meetings for note-aking purposes. Aside from the notes I scribbled, the recordings help me recall some details of the meeting. Need I say more ? Oh, the much improve OS is great. You can jump to your favorite applications from the thumbnails without scrolling thru the list of applications. Though the scroll button is a nice feature to browse over all the applications too, just press it once and the application is selected, a neat one hand job to run an application. The SheetToGo and the WordToGo applications are great, you can download your MS Word or MS Excel files to your Clie and you can read or even edit them! And for couch potatos, you can use it to control your VCRs, TV, DVD, and even your receiver! It was fun when my mate is watching, then I changed the channel even though she's holding the remote control, hah! Another neat feature I like is the Clie memo, you can draw (up to 3 colors)of anything, like a sketch, a direction, into a a blank slate. Oh, you can edit the photos too, maybe add text over it so you can attach it to an email (provided you have the wireless adapter, more on that later). Moreover, the Photostand application is another neat feature. You can play a screensaver to show your pictures. But be sure it's connected to the cradle or else you'll drain up the juice of the battery. Need I say more about the standard features ? I think I don't have to comment about the included keyboard, datebook calendar, memos, todo list, addressbook that you can sync with you Outlook.

What a Great Product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned a Visor Dlx, Sony T665C, Sony PEG-SJ20, Toshiba e310 PPC, and the Sony NX70V. The NX70V is by far the best PDA that I have used. The ability to take pictures as well as have wireless internet is what sold it to me. If you don't have the money, I have found that Palm OS 5 is not that big of deal and that the 200 MHz don't really matter, so if you get the Sony T665C, you should be happy for its price ($299.00 at CompUSA online.) But if you have the money, the "wow factor" that you get from your friends is so worth it, not to metion all of the other great features! If you are the person that uses a PDA a lot, you will find that all of the extra fetures come in handy at some time or another making them worth your money. As a high school student, the Sony has turned out to be a worth while investment, helping me with my Algebra II, Spanish and AP Chemistry homework. Overall, this is a great product that anyone with the money should buy.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I upgraded from the NRV70 and am so glad that I did. This model is much faster and has some nice additions like video capture and voice recording. The Wireless LAN feature is really nice as well. It took a bit to set up a wireless hotsyn but tech support recommended that on the handheld, when you set up the primary PC, erase the name and replace the primary PC name with !! (two exclamation marks). With that done, it syncs beautifully. Surfing the web is pretty cool too!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: from a palm user to a Pocket PC user, it was a hard choice to go back. Not as easy as PocketPC's Activesync, but HotSync works well. I like how this machine processes pictures, sharp pictures display. Video options are nice for those once in a lifetime spots where you dont usually have a camera, but so small makes it nice, Tech Support says its video will be able to play on PC soon, still developing software codecs, overall Im really happy. Works like a regular palm but in the address book you can take a persons pic and put it in with that persons address. I would recommecnd this palm to anyone who likes a multimedia experience and who can show it off to friends in awe

Great product, skimpy instructions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: So far, I have enjoyed this PDA. I have had to learn how to work supplied Clie applications on my own, however, as the instructions provided do not go into a lot of detail on how these application work. I have not found the weight to be a big issue. Compared to the Palm Vx, it is the same, if not lighter (and I had carried the Vx in my shirt pocket for 2 years). It would have been nice for Sony to provide a Memory Stick with the PDA as well, since the Video and Audio applications require one.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After quite a bit of research, I decided to go with the NX70. It is a very well built quality peice of hardware. With the 200 mhz processor, you will glide along smoothly and effortlessly. I find very often that I use it much more than pda's I've owned in the past. Actually, that was part of the draw...it's just fun to use even when your not on "official duty". I've found that the applications are easy to set up and use, espescially for me..comming from pocket pc. Bottom line, if you can afford it get it. You'll love it!

Cons:

Review: Seeing how my organizer died and lost all my info, i figured it was time to get a new one. Was out and bout searching and was intrested in PDA's. Played around with this at Best Buy and had to buy it, come to the net and just realized its brand new and have to say a good choice for my first PDA. I simply love how it is when you first buy it, but after a while, i see you can doo soooo much more. There are programs out there that are cheap and can bring out more of that awesome power for that Clie. Get the Z Launcher, its great. Make it like a mini computer where you can have folders, tabs and put a background image like a wallpaper. I can listen to music, take pictures, read books, watch a photogallery, and play games, and soo much more you can do. Get one, you won't regret it.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have had mine 2 weeks now. I went 6 days without a charge on 2 business trips, 40% battery left when I got home. Mp3s play fine. Pictures ok for simple things in good light, as are the movies. I have a 128 memory stick and have it about half filled, so the previous comments about memory compared to pocket pc are not valid. This is my 4th handheld, 1-visor, 1- palm Vx, one pocket pc, and now I am back to palm because this was simply the best and most user friendly. Agree with the CNET review. It also evidently comes in a black case, as a co worker just got one.

Excellent features, BAD SCREEN

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is an excellent pda, digital camera, writing screen on the screen, nice processor (though for some reason sony's 200mhz is slower than palms 144 arm based) 802.11 slot (which FOR ME would be far more useful than the Tungsten's bluetooth). MP3 player, which if you can get by Sony's crappy desktop software, is a good thing. Memory stick capable. These are all great things, but they forgot 2 things. 1. I don't want to open, swivel, turn, close. Every time i want to enter something quick in my pda. And then do the same to close it. 2. Still Unbelievably ridiculous battery life. Almost as bad as DARE I SAY pocket pc's!!! SONY Thumbs up for staying with palm OS, Thumbs down for acting like Pocket PC, by advertising high numbers in specs, and giving crappy numbers in battery life.

Best Palm Ever Despite the Size

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was hesitant to get the NX70V because of its bulky size, but It's AMAZING, fast zippy performance, Beautiful Screen. Easy quick pic/video/audio capture. The video capture was well worth the extra bulk and price. Captured my 3 year old son playing guitar for first time, or Daughter singing in the car... it's great for spontaneous moments since it's always with me at work or home. The BAD: Bulky size... but worth it. PalmOS5 has some improvements, but not all older programs work with it. Can't use PiDirect, and some medical programs have problems like ATPIII chol guidelines, etc... I'm happier overall with this palm than any!

Hits the mark

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had a Handspring, Sony N610c, Compaq PPC, and just got the NX70v. This is the best PDA I have owned. PPC might have some fancy stuff, but the fact remains that Palm is the better OS and since the Sony has integrated many of the features of a PPC into it, this makes more sense. OS 5 makes some much needed improvements. You can see what you write with Graffiti on the silk screen, so you can see what you did wrong. I like the new launcher Sony has on this. It makes things easier to get to. Battery life is still great, compared to my Compaq - it lasts alot longer than the Compaq. The pricetag is more like a PPC, but I think it's worth it. The camera is pretty good, I just figured out how to change the settings on it to make better pictures and movies. I haven't had any problems getting anything to work off my memory stick, like I've read here. I like the texture of the case, and the keyboard is pretty nice addition. All in all, this is one of the best PDA's out there right now

Best PDA on the market! Can't wait for Bluetooth!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: You can find this for about $510-$520 online, so with the 128mb card, it's about six-hundred something. Alright, it's not cheap. It's not light or slim either cmpared to other pda's. But it IS innovative, extremely fast, aesthetically pleasing, and Palm OS 5. Throw in a digital camera (yeah, so it's only 310k pixels, but you're not buying a camera, it's a pda with a camera for crying out loud), one of the best screens around, voice recorder, MP3 player, and MPEG recorder too, and you've got yourself the top of the line PDA in the world. We're talking science fiction quality here. And if you can wait for the Bluetooth/Wifi cards and drivers (which I understand already exist in Asia?) then it without a doubt blows all PPC competition out of the water. If you have the dough, buy it. If not, save for it. You won't be dissapointed.

No way was I going to even look at Pocket PC - too unstable and bulky. I love my new NX70! The design is gorgeous. It is solidly built with beautiful screen. The fact that I can play MP3s and take pictures and video makes this an extra fun PDA. It did take some time to figure out how to get around the annoying Sony Memory Gate MP3 playback issue, but once I learned that the files have to be placed in the "MSAudio" folder it was easy. I've had my NX70 for about a week now and I can definitely say that I am happy with this product.

Needs more goodies

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've owned a lot of handhelds, starting with the Symbol SPT1500, however the original color PEG-N Clie was the first handheld that I loved, so as SONY releases more and more handhelds I've come to expect more and more features especially at this price. I want more connectivity, so built in wi-fi or bluetooth is a must (why hasn't the BT memory stick even been released in the US yet when Europe and Asia has had it for awhile?) Also, since Sony has been touting the Clies as "Personal Entertainment" devices, how about a built-in radio tuner? And not just FM, but AM as well, since here in NYC the news stations and sports stations are all AM. I'm a big sports fan and I hate having to carry around one device to listen to MP3s and another one to listen to the Yankees or the pathetic Knicks.

And your quote about pocket pc being "Superior," Come on!! Can't you be more specific and stop repeating what other pocket pc people have brainwashed into your head.

Total Package

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this two weeks ago. But first, don't show off this device to people who are ignorant cause they won't appreciate it. When i showed this PDA to my I.T. professor, he was most impressed. Just the best PDA in the world right now. It's a total package that gives you everything and more that you need. There are some minor flaws, the swivel seems not strong enough and on the demo, it showed. I would suggest getting the extended warranty. The batteries are not replaceable and not all probrams will give you the full screen. It's too bad that Sony wanted the consumers to buy memory sticks and increase their profits. It would really be appreciated if they include more RAM and ROM like the Pocket OS devices but Palm programs doesn't require a lot of bytes. Again, this thing is just the most splendid device out there. I also plan on buying the next PDA from Sony that i'm sure will give you more pixels or quality on video images.

Expensive, but great.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: lowest price on web: techonweb.com (good resellerrating.com history too). Upgrading from a Visor Deluxe, this is quite an improvement. I will be using mostly for spreadsheets and database (thinkDB). I like the camera built in so I can take quick photos when I am in the field inspecting equipment.

More memory would have been a plus.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Overall, I like this PDA except for the fact it's overpriced and it lacks RAM. I upgraded from a T615 because of the faster processor and OS, and it's definitely worth it. My third party apps run much more smoothly. My mp3's sound great even with the cheap headphones. The Viewer app however, runs a little slow when retrieving pics from my Memory Stick. If it only had more internal memory, it would be near perfect!

It rocks but has its limits

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am one who owned the NR-70V and chose to upgrade to the NX-70V mainly for the WLAN card capability. Unfortunately, the card will not network hotsync unless the primary pc is linked via an access point. The device won't hotsync on network with a router. A bit bummed but overall impressed with the new Palm OS-5 and the improvements to the camera. Much better pics! I am also glad that the voice recorder was added. Overall, I am impressed, just a bit bummed at the wireless limitations and low RAM. Surfing the web is cool. Anyone want to buy my NR-70V

this is the one gadget to have when you're stranded on a desert island

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Features are great. MP3 player, camera (not super but great for simple snapshots), video recording (again, not great quality but super for the MOST portable digital video camera you can own), support for viewing MS Office docs/flash/etc. Buy at least 1 128MB memory stick, so you can take advantage of the mp3/video/picture functions properly. It's also handy for running programs off the memory stick (I use a lot of medical software). There was no documentation about exporting the video files, but they come out as ".mqv" format (I think mpeg-4 Quicktime). I like to copy them onto my PC hard drive, then rename them to .mov files, so they can be opened in Quicktime (v6 anyway) Player. Also, I usually convert to .mpg with tmpgenc (feel free to email me for details if you want to burn videos from the NX70V onto VCD or DVD...pretty easy). If you want to see a sample picture or video from this device, email me.

Complete BS

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I can't believe Sony would actually put a $600 price tag on something like this. Do you know it costs them less than $75 to produce one of these? Just like every other handheld it has close to no features. For $600 we should get built-in wireless LAN, a 64MB Memory Stick, and 64MB of RAM. Once you actually buy the stuff to make this product useful you have spent over $850. You can buy a Sony SRX99 notebook for $1150 on Ebay. Wow, and Palm still doesn't understand why there stock is almost valueless.

The Palm PDA I had been waiting for!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Finally a palm with a decent processor and a decent OS! The screen is beautiful and crisp and audio output is outstanding. This thing does just what I needed it to do, be my MP3 player, movie player, organizer, game machine, file transporter, and all-around cool gadget. Of course the bad thing about this sucker is the price. Although I was fortunate to find an awesome deal on e-bay.

This thing will help you pick up chicks...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Everyone in my office both men and women were gawking at this and wanting to play with it when I first got it, anyone I know who has a PDA is now getting a new Clie ASAP after seeing this (PDA envy)...I don't want anyone to get one since i'm the only kid on the block with the new toy,... sound quality and functions are great, the voice recorder comes in handy for notes or meetings and the video and digicams are just fun but not as functional for most...

A very impressive PDA

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had PDAs from a Sharp Wizard to Zaurus to Palm5 to the first Clie, the n710c, and now the nx70v. This one is quite simply the very best one yet. With plenty of features and a blazing fast processor, the only drawback is its cost.

Not Bad but Pricy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Not a bad idea, should consider a larger keyboard with all that "useless space" on the bottom flap. Picture on the screen is unbelievable.....little heavy but definetly an attention grabber.......why else spend $600.00?

The best Palm PDA, but pricey

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just bouht my clie yesterday, and let me tell you, the more I use it the more impressed I am with all the functions it has, I love the camera, I love the MP3 player, I love the voice recorder, I just love the whole Clie. The Palm people should do something with their PDA's because the Sony Clie is the Mercedes Benz of the PDA's. And like it was mention on another review, if you can afford it, buy it, you won't regret it.

Best Handheld On The Market!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Our company owns 2 Palms and two other Clies. The NX70V is by far the best of the lot. I have personally used it for months and feel I've finally found a handheld that meets ALL my needs. As for the price -- you get what you pay for. There are cheaper models out there but this is the power user's handheld!! There's no doubt in my mind the bar has been raised by Sony.

The best Palm device but with problems

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Let me state I was about to return this beautiful but difficult machine back to Best Buy where I bought it but my son and i are having a bit of fun with it so it'll probably stay. I've had it a week and may still return it... It's working if you don't use the audio. Sony's SonicStage audio program is a disaster. It doesn't even acknowledge Sony's own Magic Gate Memory Stick. (You also need a "white" Magic Gate Memory Stick if you're interested in audio stereo.) I Still haven't got it to work. Otherwise an amazing titillating machine. I'll probably return to get the service plan for 3 or 4 years as this thing is gonna brack as the swiveling clam shell case is already getting a little loose after only a week. Battery life is modest... but easily recharged. Necessary and frequent "hard" resets are hard to do... lack of memory (internal) doesn't allow a lot of downloaded programs to work... my Memory Stick refused to work after downloading a few 'free' programs. (many are out there..) And absolutely NO SERVICE from Sony's phone # given. If you don't add much new to the machine you're probably okay... and if you've got problems... a lot of time is needed to figure them out. A techigeek's fun toy maybe... but high maintainence. But still it's a lot of fun.

Save your money and time

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Poor craftsmanship...the keyboard adhesive was incomplete. Bulky and heavy. Picture quality is unusable. Video quality is only 160x112. I thought it would be a useful tool for work with the ability to take pictures and video but it's just a beautiful toy with a nice screen. The CF slot is not supported by Sony yet and it adds inconvenient bulk. Spent a total of 1.5 hours on hold just to get an RMA number to return it. Save your time and money.

How is the battery life?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I like everything about it except the price compared to the $300 PPC's coming soon. How is the battery life? When adding a Memory Stick, does the PalmOS recognize it as additional memory to the 16MB or does the MS act as a separate 'drive'?

Probably the best Palm OS based PDA!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Well Sony has a real winnder here... Palm still has the best OS in the PDA market right now. I am glad Sony did not go with the Pocket PC OS, it's cluttered, slow and unstable! Too bad Dell didn't adopt the more superior Palm OS, maybe their PDA would have been a better buy?!

Probably the best Palm-based PDA, but is it enough?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One can argue that if it wasn't for Sony extending the capabilities of a Palm-based PDA with multimedia features and better screens, the handheld market would be completely dominated with PocketPC devices by now. I've owned three Palm PDAs, and still prefer the PalmOS over Pocket PC for its general and uncomplicated ease of use. For this Sony, I like the great screen, the faster processor, and the general improvements made over the previous version. However, my experience with Sony tech service hasn't been great, the memory limitation is troublesome, and how much support that compactflash slot is going to get remains to be seen. For $600, it would be nice to have an 8 or 16 MB Memory Stick thrown in. I also want to see what kind of 802.11b and Bluetooth support will come its way. That said, this is still the best, most feature-laden, Palm PDA on the market, so if you're like me who wants a handheld that can handle business duties very well during the day, and play equally well away from the office, go for it.

Most complete PDA on the market!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bouth the NX70V on november 3rd, I think it´s just amazing. The quality of the video is great, as well as the jpeg pictures, not to mention the interface, which is very user-friendly, and the superb audio quality. Of course the unit is a little pricey, but you get what you pay for, and right now I can´t find a Pocket PC on the market that offers the same features, except for the memory that´s the only drawback. All you have to do is compare this Clie to the Ipaq and the Toshiba units, and you´ll see a better overall design, better screen, and more features. I´ve used Pocket PC for the last year, and I think it´s a great OS, however we´ll have to see if the Palm OS 5.0 lives up to the hype, and gets the support it needs. For now, it seems like a great improvement for PALM-based handhelds. And remember the only ones who get benefits from the PALM-POCKET PC competition, are us (the customers) or do we want Microsoft to have just another monopoly?

Nice Review Pam

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just picked up my NX70V today and all I too can say is WOW! I disagree with Gal's comment on the exterior finish, I happen to like it. Lots of bells and whistles (as there should be for the price), and I love the voice recorder. My only concern is the 11 Mb available (of 16Mb on-board) memory space. Sony's own website specs (from the PDF file) list it as having 15 of 16 Mb available. Apparently the OS uses 4Mb of memory. Hopefully they will come out with an update to free up more internal memory. I've got a couple of 128Mb memory sticks so it may not be that big a deal in day to day use. Pam.... where did you get that handy 3-in-one charger (including car cigarette lighter), and who makes it???

Nice review GAL

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Opps... I was right then by jumping from the Palm land to the Pocket PC land... If OS 5 and a browser is going to eat up your memory... leaving you with 9 or less.... you better switch gears too. Yes my friend. As I did . Toshiba E740 now a days, is Wi-Fi ready (you will love this tech). and it costs much much less, not to mention that it has Pocket PC a SUPERIOR system, and 64 MB at your disposal. BTW don't look for improvement in the near future ...Palm OS 5 is NOT capable of handling more than 16 MB of memory

A Disaster right Out of the Box

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this unit as an upgrade to my NR-70. First of all, the wireless CF card is not yet available and Sony customer "service" has no clue as to when it will be available. You can't order it on-line. The buy link is a dead end. In fact Sony customer service doesn't seem to know this machine at all. Second and most important. Palm OS 4 uses 1 MB of the NR 70's 16 MB of memory leaving plenty of room for add on programs. Well, surprise, Palm OS 5 uses a whopping 5 MB of the 16 MB on the NX 70V. If you install the browser software (over 2MB and 6 MB needed free just to install the thing), that leaves only 9 MB of free memory most of which is taken up by the software already loaded on the machine. The machine also seems lighter and much flimsier than the NR 70. The finish is like sandpaper and uncomfortable in the hand. Palm OS 5 is pretty and fast, but that's about it. If you're planning on using any reasonable amount of third party software on the NX 70 or NX 60, "forgeddaboudit"! And that's exactly what I'm going to do with my NX 70, take it back and forgeddaboudit. Thank's Sony for taking a machine, the NR 70 that needed a little fixing and completely breaking it.

Sony's got a winner on this one

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've owned no less than 6 Palm O/S PDA's with my employer buying them for my use; they sync nicely with our GroupWise groupware at work and Intellisync's conduit. Being a gadget gal, I am always looking for the best quality, all-in-one device that means I can do more with less to carry. The Palm O/S was a prerequisite for me, but I yearned for all the gadgets and features of the fancy Pocket class of PDA's. When I saw Sony was coming out with this baby, I decided to wait for it to come to market, and to use personal funds to buy this one because of all the extra features my employer didn't want to pay for. All I can say is "WOW!!!" I rec'd it Friday morning from the local Circuit City (which gave a nice $25 rebate for buying online, but picking up in person.) I couldn't be happier with all the features, and in one short day, I've tried them all. I did find out after the purchase that the wireless LAN card (option) is only for your existing wireless LANs at home or the office, not for the fee-for-monthly-service wireless access all over the country. The battery life will probably go fast when in an extensive digital video mode all day, but I bought a handy 3-in-one charger (including car cigarette lighter). I played with and demo'd all the video features most of the day and only late this evening came up on the low battery warning. I probably won't spend another day with the high utilization I demanded on the first day. I can find nothing to have buyer's remorse about and will not part with this PDA. Sony got it right, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Everything works as advertised and resolution is fabulous! It doesn't get any better than this for those who have to have it all.

Pros:

Cons:

More features in an already feature-packed beauty.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One main feature (sound recorder) which I felt was left out in the earlier model has been introduced in this model and it simply wins my heart. The infrared feature and more resolution makes it an exciting PDA to have. Very flashy. The only downside is that for $600, they should provide more memory at least.
