The successor to the Pocket PC e750, the Toshiba Pocket PC e805 is the company's latest and most advanced model. The step-down e800 is nearly identical; the only difference is that it doesn't ship with ArcSoft's PhotoBase software. Like its predecessor, the e805 runs Windows Mobile 2003 on a 400MHz Intel PXA263 processor. The PDA has plenty of features, including built-in Secure Digital and CompactFlash slots; integrated Wi-Fi capabilities; a solid 128MB of RAM; and a large, high-resolution screen. The handheld's speed and robust feature set will suit business users seeking full functionality, but the e805 costs an expensive $600 and faces stiff competition from HP's iPaq H4350, which throws in Bluetooth and an integrated keyboard for $100 less. The Toshiba Pocket PC e805 has many of the e750's features, but when it comes to design, the new model recalls the simple, square aesthetics of the earlier e405. Measuring 5.3 by 3 by 0.6 inches, the e805 is bigger than the e750, and the two expansion slots bring the bulk to 6.8 ounces. The solid-feeling handheld has an eye-catching cobalt-blue casing.

Size matters: The e805's footprint measures 5 by 3 inches.

Offering a generous 4-inch view, 65,536 colors, and a 240x320-pixel resolution that you can change to 640x480 for full VGA support, the transflective TFT display is the e805's main attraction. Below it are navigation controls closely resembling the e405's. A rectangular four-way toggle encloses a small but easy-to-press Select button. Clustered around the pad are four standard Windows shortcut keys. They're customizable, but their icons denote their default assignments: the calendar, the task list, your contacts, and the Home menu. A small speaker in the lower right enables voice recording and audio playback, and an indicator light glows during alerts and battery charging.

We like the jog dial, which doubles as a Select button and is easy to use one-handed. It sits on the unit's left side beside the voice-recorder key, which can also activate a different function. The nearby infrared port lets you transfer data between the e805 and another handheld. A tiny hole for soft resets is on the right-hand side.

On the bottom of the device are the cradle/accessory port, the power cable's socket, and switches for hard resets and Wi-Fi connectivity. The memory-expansion slots, the 3.5mm stereo jack for headphones or a microphone, the power button, and the stylus holder are on top. Pulling out the stylus is rather difficult, but once you have it, you can collapse it to a smaller size.
The Toshiba Pocket PC e805's feature set packs a powerful punch. The handheld's zippy 400MHz Intel PXA263 is on a par with the e750's and a step above the e405's. The included memory is generous: 128MB of RAM, 32MB of ROM, and a separate 32MB of flash storage. You can even expand the capacity via the dual CompactFlash II and Secure Digital media slots.

Two expansion slots make it easy to add memory.

In addition to 802.11b Wi-Fi connectivity, the e805 supports Voice over IP (VoIP), which allows you to make phone calls via an Internet connection. However, to use VoIP, you'll need to subscribe separately to VLI's Gphone Buddy Service, and prices vary according to the options you choose. The e805 offers no integrated Bluetooth capability, but you can purchase Toshiba's Socket SDIO Connection Kit With Bluetooth Wireless Technology for $135.

Stay in sync with the e805's included cradle.

The e805's Windows Pocket PC 2003 operating system includes all the staples: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet Explorer. You also get MSN Messenger, the Solitaire and Jawbreaker games, and more. With ClearView Suite, you can access but not edit native files from Microsoft Office 97, 2000, and 2002; PowerPoint; Excel; and Word. The same program displays JPEG, Portable Network Graphics (PNG), and Windows bitmap (BMP) images. The Terminal Services Client enables you to connect to and control a Windows XP Professional system.

The e805's multimedia features include Windows Media Player 9.0, Microsoft Reader, and a voice recorder. And the ATI video controller has its own 2MB of memory, which results in faster and better graphics. Unlike the Toshiba e800, the e805 also offers ArcSoft PhotoBase for viewing and editing images.

Along with the virtual keyboard, the letter recognizer, and the transcriber, you'll find a fourth input method: the Block Recognizer. It's a Graffiti-like program that uses a pop-up area on the screen. You can also navigate and operate apps with Toshiba's text-to-speech feature and Microsoft's Voice Command software.

We did have a couple of complaints with the included accessories. The AC charger's cumbersome design leaves you tangled in cords. The cradle enables charging and PC synchronization, but if you want to connect the e805 to other USB devices, such as a keyboard or a mouse, you'll need to purchase the $19 USB host cable. Toshiba also sells a $99 presentation pack, which lets you run an S-Video cable from a projector to the handheld.
We were generally pleased by the Toshiba Pocket PC e805's performance. Thanks to the 400MHz processor, programs loaded painlessly and video ran smoothly. Our Jawbreaker gameplay suffered a couple of hiccups, such as the occasional frozen image, but we didn't experience anything too distracting.

The e805's display is among its finest attributes. A large size, crystal-clear resolution, and rich colors make the screen easy on the eyes. Ten brightness levels keep the view just as usable in sunlight as in dim conditions, and you can set the backlight to sleep after intervals ranging from just a few seconds to several minutes. We had to bump the speaker volume quite high to fully hear the sound, but it was clear.

The e805's videos were a mixed bag. The fast processor ensured that clips never hit any speed bumps, but the picture sometimes looked pixelated and blurry, especially during action scenes.

When we first tried to establish a Wi-Fi connection, the device couldn't locate the IP address. But once we'd switched Wi-Fi off then on again, we were up and running in no time, and we were impressed. Web pages loaded quickly; the wait for even graphics-intensive pages was relatively short.

The e805's battery life came in at 30 minutes longer than the rated 4 hours. That lasting power is above average, beating the e750's by 30 minutes and the HP iPaq H5550's by 65 minutes. Another positive is that unlike the e405, the e805 lets you replace the cell yourself; Toshiba sells backups for $49 each. A high-capacity battery is available for $109; it promises a weighty 12 hours of handheld use.

Still the best - upgrade!

Pros: I use this device for business, to earn money, to play games and listen to mp3. So I wanted the best, tried several PPCs and that machine was the best of all. I do not like built-in useless mini-cams and suggest you do the same. Instead, go buy the cheape

Cons: Humankind always asks for the better one but this is it for now.

Best PocketPC ever

Pros: I have had this PocketPC for atleast 9 months now and it is the best one I have ever had for the following reasons. - perfect laptop replacement with external portable keyboard (thinkoutside.com) especially since it is very durable, portable and expandabl

Cons: - Toshiba may be pulling out of the PDA market (business not quality reasons) so this PPC may not be available for very long to purchase.

Great Pocket PC for its time & age

Pros: Tough Pocket PC, I can't remember how often I dropped it and it just kept going. If you are not carefull with your stuff, that's the one to get. What other PPC gives you Video/Monitor Output. I've done all my Power Point presentations from my PPC.

Cons: When you loose power, you loose your data. Big NO NO. I'd love to get the e805 (now that my e740 finally broke), but its too expensive. I'm going with the Dell Axim X30 for around $300. Unfortunally, I'll have to draw my Laptop around again for Power Poin

Fast, great screen

Pros: I have upgraded my device to 2003 SE - the first PDA to actually use this, and take advantage of the 192 dpi - not necesarily more real estate, but EVERYTHING is sharp, and clear, and beautiful. I couldn't use other PDAs if I wanted to now!

Cons: Toshiba customer support could be better - they did offer a free upgrade to SE, but when I had a screen issue they were going to charge me for shipping. I returned through CDW and I am happy.

Pros: This is my first pda so i really don't have much to compare it to. the screen on the e805 is great as everyone says, but i'm still running in 240x320 most of the time, waiting for the Mobile Windows 2004 upgrade. the higher 640x480 resolution is indispens

Almost perfect. Bottom line.

Pros: There is only one thing you need to know people: VGA SCREEN. I own it, and use it every day. I don't know how I lived without it. The screen is gorgeous, and using software like NetFront, I can walk in my house and surf the net (and it looks perfect!),

Cons: It has one horrible glaring issue: Button lag. All the buttons you would use to play any twitch-reflex action games will suffer because of a near half-second lag on the button press. It's the ONLY thing stopping this beast from perfection.

Cons: - A bit bigger than I expected. - Not all apps support the VGA so QVGA has to be used at times. Don't listen to the trolls who just say "DON'T BUY TOSHIBA BLAH BLA BLAH" They probably got burned on previous units. We are reviewing the E805 here!

Worst support and upgrade ability of any vendor

Pros: None. Figures.

Cons: As an hugely dissapointed owner of the e740, i've got nothing positive to say about Toshiba's support and customer relations. Upgrading a Toshiba unit is the last of their concerns. I was even told at one time that that was not there goal to design upgr

HP's Ipaq does not compare to Toshiba's New e800

Pros: Cool Design, Better features that HP ipaq H4350. Who uses Bluetooth anyway? The keyboard suc_s. The only person able to use HP's keyboard is a child with small fingers. Tons of memory for storing apps and data without worrying if the battery gones dead. T

Cons: A little larger than expected.

Its okay

Pros: I like the way it looks and when it does work its pretty usefull! Works great for playing solitare and for contacts. I just wish i could get more games and it was more reliable.

Cons: I dont use my pda for a business so i dont have a high demand on it. But i have lost all information on mine about 3 times now. I wish that the battries woudl last longer. ALso the time on it is set 2 hours fast. And I DIDNT set the time wrong. Some

Wonderful Product! Solid and powerful! Try one.

Pros: -Very solid case. -Fast 400mhz processor. -ATI Graphics w/ 2mb vram! -Jog Wheel (very rare) -802.11b Wi-Fi built-in -Strong Wi-Fi reception. Take a walk while using the "Search for Wireless" sniffer, and see how many Wi-Fi networks you can find.) -IR port

Cons: -Price is about $100 high. -No protective slip case at all. (Buy one for $10) -No spare stylus. -No physical keyboard (I wouldn't use it anyway. HP gives you one on their 4350 but it's huge, and non-removable.

Toshiba PDA = piece of sh__!

Pros: All the current pocket pc stuff

Cons: Our group bought E740's (only 1 still works but it has had problems) and they kept running out of power with no warning and wiped out everything you put on it. I bought a new battery and it still died! Sent it in to Toshiba (free) and it started dying a

Excellent screen much better than HP

Pros: The best resolution screen out there. Blows away HP handhelds resolution and sharpness. Love the home button on right side bottom. This feature alone sets it far apart from HP. It switchs to home page that gives battery life % and quick ajust to LCD light

Cons: Wish you didn't have to buy a 100.00 add on to present this on powerpoint LCD projector. Slightly larger than HP's smallest but it was much more eye appealing.

Maybe not a supercomputer, but definately a super PDA.

Pros: The e800 series has a stunning screen - reaching resulutions up to 480x640. Toshiba's redesigning of their PDAs' cases is also very nice. Warranty and repair services are great!

Cons: The price is rather high. The device is rather big, but its abundance of features make up for the size. I own an e335 and I know that sometimes Toshiba can get a little lazy in releasing upgrades, etc.
