'Go right' video celebrates side-scrolling platformers

A glorious YouTube video has sprung up, celebrating side-scrolling platformers of old.

Joe has been writing about consumer tech for nearly seven years now, but his liking for all things shiny goes back to the Gameboy he received aged eight (and that he still plays on at family gatherings, much to the annoyance of his parents). His pride and joy is an Infocus projector, whose 80-inch picture elevates movie nights to a whole new level.

If you spent most of your childhood years with a NES controller in your hand, holding down the B button and Right on the D-pad, then you'll like this video.

Titled 'Go right', it's a celebration of side-scrolling platformers of old, set to a stirring orchestral soundtrack. And it's pretty darn great.

It's a montage of some of the best-known characters to do as the title says, and go right. It features mostly retro characters, but the odd modern-day hero has slipped in as well. The music is A Wild and Distant Shore by Michael Nyman.

It certainly rings our retro bells here at CNET UK. It's our nostalgia for old-school gaming that inspired our recent video celebration of Nintendo.

Extra respect to you if you can name all the characters or games featured. I'll get us started: Castlevania, Super Ghouls'n Ghosts, Aladdin, Mega Man, Donkey Kong Country, Zelda 2, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, Batman, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Now over to you.

Make sure you watch until the end too, to see how it comes out.

The video was uploaded by a YouTube user by the name of RockyPlanetesimal. And he seems a bit of a gaming fiend, with other videos uploaded including Super Mario 64 Revisited, How to Survive the Last Night, and, er… a dubbed Simpsons clip.

Our Nintendo video comes at a troubled time for the company. It's just posted its first loss, and it was more of a crater than a dent in the finances -- a whopping £330m to be precise. Expect Mario to come with slightly tattier looking dungarees in the next instalment. Nintendo is looking to turn around its fortunes by letting you download new games straight to your console without leaving the house. If this rains keeps up, it's a recipe for success.

What do you think of the video? And can you name all the games? Let me know in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.
