Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 with GPS Locator is the bargain alternative to pricey, PDA-size Garmin International, Lowrance Electronics, and others. Streets & Trips runs on any Windows PC (ideally, a laptop), and its GPS receiver plugs into the USB port.

The 2007 edition has some helpful enhancements from the last version, including a smaller GPS device that's just 1.25 inches square and more sensitive, so it does a better job of detecting satellite signals. Our test receiver, for instance, worked fine when placed on our car's passenger seat. With previous versions, we had to place the receiver on the dashboard or window to get a signal. Another plus: If you don't want to use the supplied USB cable, you can plug the receiver directly into the USB port.

Streets & Trips 2007 integrates with Windows Live Search and displays businesses, schools, and other locations on a local map.

Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 software now integrates with Windows Live Search, Microsoft's answer to Google. By clicking the Windows Live icon on the Standard toolbar, you can search for businesses in your areas, such as shoe repair and so on. Streets & Trips pinpoints all matches on a local map, allowing you to select a business and get directions from your current location. This system is pretty slick--with some caveats. To access Windows Live, naturally you'll need an Internet connection. If you're in your car, this means either municipal Wi-Fi, which most cities don't have, a wireless cellular modem, or some other flavor of over-the-air broadband. Then again, you could use Windows Live before leaving the home or office. It would be nice if Streets & Trips integrated with Google, too, but odds are that won't happen anytime soon.

Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 gives voice directions, as in, "Turn left in point-three miles." That's good, but we'd like more details. You see, unlike the best GPS navigators, Streets & Trips doesn't announce street names, as in "Turn left at Doubletree Lane." Street names would be helpful when you're driving in any densely packed urban area with many side streets and alleys. On the plus side, this program's full-screen navigation mode now displays four commonly used buttons: Turn Voice On/Off, Repeat Spoken Instruction, Re-route, and Night Mode at the top of the screen, making them easier to access.

Microsoft provides one year of free e-mail and phone assistance for Streets & Trips in addition to online resources, a generous support package for a consumer application.

Streets & Trips 2007 is a great vacation planner, but we caution against using it in traffic. From time to time, you'll need to glance at the screen map or tap a key, and that's a dangerous proposition at highway speeds. Remember, your laptop is probably sitting in the passenger seat, unless you have a human navigator navigating with the software.

Maps not backward compatible

Pros: Has weather update

Cons: Maps cannot be saved as older versions.

Review: Has to be registered online and only allows one registration, therefore cannot be loaded on your desktop to create a 'route' and then used on your laptop to 'follow' that route.

Also any maps created in 2008 are not recognized by older versions of the software. There is no 'save as' for older versions....BIG NEGATIVE in my book!

Also found that some of the streets in my area (84770) are incorrect...however Yahoo maps has them right!

It works well. Recommended.

Pros: GPS receiver connects quickly

Cons: Voice could be louder

Review: We used a Garmin GPS10 in conjunction with our HP IPAQ2495 and Gateway laptop. After using MS Streets and Trips 2007, I put the Garmin on Ebay. The MS receiver connects when it's supposed to and not on a random basis like the Garmin. The software is much more intuitive and easier to use. There is no unlock map nonsense. Everything works better in this program than the Garmin. The maps are clear and easy to read. We bought our copy on Ebay from an overstock dealer at $43.00 shipped and it is worth twice that.

Save your money

Pros: Great if you just want a map and an idea where you are

Cons: Crap if you want to get somewhere

Review: The team that wrote this software went out of there way to insure you needed to interact with the screen a lot.
The software does not 'count down' to the turn, instead you're told to turn in 100 yards for example, but not at the point you're supposed to turn (requiring you to take your eyes off the road to confirm the correct turn).
If you go off route, you must manually issue a route recalculation (F3). Why doesn't it just recalculate for you?

Worse than Co-Pilot Truck

Pros: Great for finding an address

Cons: No easy way to detour on the fly

Review: I have been using Co-Pilot Truck for over a year and have got used to it's limitations and thought that Streets & Trips would be an improvement, was I ever wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! As I drive a truck for a living, I sometimes go to new customers, Co-Pilot quite frequently does not have the address in the correct location or not at all. I use Streets & Trips to double check the location then I plug it into Co-Pilot.
Streets & Trips does not work in the real world, I know that a road would NEVER be closed due to an accident, road construction, or other calamity, if you get off route it's up to you to find out how to get back on route, it has no provisions for detouring to an alternate route.
Mac should use this in thier PC commericals!!

Need to look at all that use the highways on a daily basis

Pros: Goods maps

Cons: more info on low bridges for large rv's

Review: My only complaint with Microsoft Streets and trips is the lack of support for the public that travel in RV's or campers.
You see more and more on the highways today those big 45' Motorcoaches and or 5th wheel trailers, so why has Microsoft not looked at providing highways that have low bridges and where we can find diesel fuel, dumping stations for waste.
I am sure that this type of information is easy to add.

Excellent Software Perfect

Pros: Very Good Program Excellent!

Cons: none that I see

Review: Some of these other people that wrote reviews are straight retards! This is the best GPS Software program out there its very easy to use self explanatory you dont need any directions to understand this program its very simple to use and extremely accurate. I repeat extremely accurate I used it to go all the way from CT to FL and everything worked fine. No more getting lost or using maps or asking for directions because this does it all for you. And even have a night vision for the night time view Excellent!

No Way Not This Not The One!!!

Pros: You can find businesses in the area kind of easily.

Cons: Very hard to use.

Review: I own the GPS 18 from Garmin, and just got Streets & Trips 2007 for a gift, and it stinks. I am a very busy person and can not go to forum to forum trying to figure out how to use this tool. GPS 18 from Garmin, hands down is the best laptop solution to GPS travel. Do NOT buy S&T, do research on your purchase if you do not want to take my opinion on the GPS 18.

Bad choice for GPS

Pros: Fairly good trip routiing

Cons: no auto re-route, no address book integration,

Review: I had purchased the Delorme program and thought streets and trips would be a nice upgrade. The only thing I can say positive about S&T is that it sometimes gives a better route than Delorme and can download construction info. User interface, address book, POI's, auto-reroute, user interface and ease of use all fall into the Delorme camp. On my first usage of the program, I encountered unexpected traffic congestion. When I detoured off the specified route I was given an off route prompt and recieved no further directions. I typically use the Delorme product to help me find shortcuts around congestion. With streets and trips you have to manually tell the software to recalculate the route. Save your money, buy the Delorme package, it's cheaper and better.

Haven't tried it with the GPS, but its a lousy trip planner

Pros: At least it is still available

Cons: Not nearly as good as the Rand McNally Tripmaker

Review: I've been using the Rand McNally Tripmaker for years. I bought a new computer and instead of simply loading the old program, I went out and bought a new one. Evidently Tripmaker is no longer available. So I bought the Streets & Trips with GPS on sale. I haven't had a chance with the winter weather of checking out the GPS, but the trip planning is very poor. I used it to try and plan some long trips I am going to make this summer. First glaring fault is no way to set your preferences for times and speeds. In fact there is no way to actually figure out what they use for average speed. You only have choice of faster or slower but no idea of what they use as an average speed. To say I am not happy with the program would be an understatement. The only saving grace is that the GPS receiver works with my old Tripmaker program still on the old laptop.

Street and trip with GPS

Pros: Good maps, good gps receiver, very accurate, good price

Cons: Doesn't announce street names or numbers, usage agrrement annoying

Review: After using this for my first trip yesterday i was a little dissapointed. You have to guess at where your turning since it doesnt speak the street names. If your laptop goes into sleep mode like they usually do sitting in the passenger seet you have to recheck the box to activate gps then you have to re agree to the usage agreement. It will reroute your trip which you will have to do multiple times unless you want to go the long way. It is a good gps and map system but not a great one and for the price it makes it a little better. I think i paid 70.00 for everything. The audio voice could be a little louder.

Better than I was expecting

Pros: GPS receiver is surprisingly sensitive

Cons: Not yet well integrated with MS live local

Review: Let me admit straight off that I've had very little previous experience with GPS devices, so I lack a firsthand frame of reference. However, anecdotal info kept me from purchasing until I started hearing good buzz about this package. People were unusually enthusiastic about the hardware in particular. I must admit, installing the software & USB device went much smoother than expected, and the GPS receiver locked in a signal in areas where my XM radio drops out. I noticed in the printed materials that this hardware seems usable with windows mobile devices like PDAs & smartphones. That really leverages the usefulness. So far I've only used it in densely populated (well mapped) areas. I look forward to putting it through it's paces on a serious road trip.
