Symantec is a champion thoroughbred in the Windows utilities arena, thanks largely to its stable of popular tools such as Norton AntiVirus. It continues this tradition with Norton CleanSweep 2002, a powerful, $29.95 package that deletes unwanted programs and files from your hard drive, zaps unneeded Internet clutter (cookies, ActiveX Controls, and so on), and backs up unused applications and important system files. But even with its robust collection of tools, Norton CleanSweep 2002 features an orderly, straightforward interface that's simple enough for computer novices to use. It's an excellent choice for PC users who want to reclaim wasted storage space.

Simple setup
Installing CleanSweep is a breeze. Insert the CD-ROM, click Next during a brief series of introductory screens, and sit back as the program installs itself in minutes. The default setup configures Windows to launch the SmartSweep utility at Windows start-up; this tool logs every change made to your system when you install a program and allows CleanSweep to remove all traces of the programs you want to delete. (Windows' uninstaller, by comparison, is notorious for leaving behind bits and pieces of deleted apps.) Similarly, InternetSweep, which also loads at Windows start-up, monitors ActiveX downloads from the Net for easy deletion later.

Easy to use
CleanSweep's uncluttered interface makes disk cleanup painless. Menu choices are followed by brief text explanations that describe their purpose. For instance, Fast & Safe Cleanup "quickly removes unnecessary files to free up disk space." No confusion there. Once you select a tool, CleanSweep scans the computer and requests your approval before deleting any files. In CNET tests, Fast & Safe quickly scanned our system and in less than a minute tagged 7.8MB of unneeded files (mostly from the browser cache and Recycle Bin) for deletion. We had the option of viewing the targeted file types (such as temp files) and checking the boxes of those we wished to remove.

User control is important because CleanSweep sometimes makes errors in judgment. When we used CleanSweep to delete BearShare, a file-swapping utility similar to Napster, the program tagged for deletion dozens of digital music (MP3) files stored in a BearShare subfolder. (A more intelligent program might have recommended saving files with the .mp3 extension.)

CleanSweep's program uninstaller is painless to use; simply select the app you wish to delete from an Explorer-like list. Surprisingly, some competitors, such as Ultra WinCleaner 2002, don't have integrated uninstallers but simply access Windows' often unreliable Add/Remove Programs utility to zap apps. CleanSweep includes an easy-to-use backup tool for archiving seldom-used programs.

Solid support
Symantec offers first-rate free support for CleanSweep users. Its Web site includes an online form for e-mail support, and our questions were answered promptly (typically, within a few hours). There's also a searchable knowledge base with articles on known technical problems, a troubleshooter tool that steps you through problems, and product tutorials. If you want phone support, however, you'll have to pay $29.95 per incident, or $2.95 per minute.

Norton CleanSweep 2002, with its winning combination of powerful disk-cleaning tools, low price, and an uncomplicated interface, is tops in its class.

--by Jeff Bertolucci

CleanSweep's streamlined interface provides helpful explanations of each cleanup tool--a boon to novices unsure of which tool does what.

Easy, but Volatile, be careful!

Pros: Very easy to find and delete files and programs. Simple interface. Very tight package.

Cons: WATCH OUT! Uninstaller has deleted VERY important files, collapsing my entire system!!!

2001 is way better!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This version misses the essence of cleansweep and it doesn't have all the features of CS2001. You can do all that CS2002 do with the windows apps for free.

a nightmare

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program can actually delete files that you need and then some. When I noticed that, I uninstalled it, but then my PC could not reboot because it corrupted my autoexec and other system files.

Garbage DONT BUY IT

Cons:

Review: Come on Ccnet you are obiously in cahoots with Symantec. Come on honestly how can your Editor give it a 9? its total garbage, it can't clean up the registry. program backup

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i like this program personally, especially i have a cd writer, many program updates you install on your drive, if you format the drive you have to install the orginal program then the update again, i think which is very annoying, with norton cleansweep 2002, i backup my programs that i installed, maybe updates or just standard programs, i had to redo my hard drive several times already thanks to clean sweep i can restore these updates and not having to go to the hassle of installing the orginal, it takes care of all that for me!!! good work norton systems. with a cd writer you can write the backups to cd and later restore them if necessary.

some parts work

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use clean sweep regularly to clean out the cache and some internet clutter, BUT it consistently misses the spyware cookies like doubleclick. Also when I used the utility to remove a specific photo print program, it took out that as well as Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Premier! It was a nightmare.

1992 Maybe, Not 2002

Pros:

Cons:

Review: There is no automation. Even when CleanSweep is scheduled, you still have to click start. To delete internet junk, it makes you start five applications.

Where's the beef?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just bought the 2000 version, thinking it had to be better than my old one. Wrong! 2000 lacks several utilities previously available, such as finding specific types of files, e.g., duplicates, unused dll's and fonts, orphans, etc. Should call 2000 version "CleanSweep for Dummies"

Go Norton

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ok all you complainers...this is the easiest clean up program I have ever used. Just click one button, and it cleans up a lot of stuff. On a regular basis (monthly) I free a couple hundred megs of space~

No Advanced Features

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No advanced options for cleaning Registry, orphan files, etc. or System Information, Diagnosing Hardware that 2001 version had, so put System Works 2001 back on PC and most of my friends have done same after trying 2002 version. Why didn't you include these Advanced Options? Isn't a newer version supposed to be even better than previous one, yet you delete it presumably to get people to buy Clean Sweep 2002 separately from Norton System Works 2002 to get full benefit of these missing features which aren't even sure are on CleanSweep 2002.

Waste of Time & Money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The problem seems to be Symantec rather than CleanSweep. I've used other programs, and been satisfied with them, before they were bought by Symantec. When Symantec gets them, they seem to apply their own "company philosophy" to them and screw them all up. Either they try to dumb them down, or they get too sophiscated and try to take over your computer. I'd used Cleansweep for a few years and it was a great program. Then Symantec bought it and made it useless. Worse, it made WinXP unstable on my computer. Stay away from it.

User Rating: 3/10

this upgrade is a step back; stick with CS 2001

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I strongly dissent to the editor's decision to label this product as a top product. The program caused so many errors during installation, and was ineffectinve in installations when it was working properly. Owners of CleanSweep 2001 are better off keeping that version of this program, due to its stabilility and more features (version 2002 has some of the advanced but essential functions removed). This is the first product from norton that I do not endorse.

This one takes the cake...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm sorry, CNET, I think Cleansweep is so feature lacking, it's pathetic.. Look at Window Washer.. Infinately better.. As for uninstallers, they all stink...

Review: It erases everything I need to revert my Cdrive! I've lost so many things...downloading is a nightmare.

A downgrade from 2001

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I really enjoyed Cleansweap 2001, so I eagerly awaited 2002. Big dissapointment, i mean BIG. Honestly, the 9 point ranking by CNET was misleading. This program does half of the things my 2001 use to do. I'm going to upgrade again, but back to last years product.

cnet gives it a 9, users give it a 4 ???

Pros:

Cons:

Review: c'mon cnet, what gives? What?s with the disparity? Editor?s choice ?? Do you really want to portray yourself as not being credible and having no integrity? You?re walking a thin line. Life is too short to be wasted searching for support that does not exist! The very first thing the consumer needs to see when picking up a Symantec product is: We do not offer free support. Choose from two PriorityCare lines: 800-927-3995 at $29.95 per incident charged to your credit card. 900-646-0033 at $2.95 per minute charged to your phone bill. The very next thing the consumer needs to see when perusing a Symantec product is ?we do not answer technical support or customer service questions.? If you are rich, and you have nothing better to do then, sure go ahead and spend your money. If you?re as poor as I am, well, enough said. Good, bad, it doesn?t matter. Symantec never claimed to have bug-free software. Whether your system crashes, or not, while using any of these products is a factor of your OS and the Symantec module. SystemWorks can be used productively (for example, the virus software works very well on my win2000 system,) but I?m leading a consumer group that boycotts products that have no support. If you want to Join my movement, then stay away from Symantec. Hint: reading the ?Only Negative? reviews can be very insightful when more than one review points out the same problem.

Did Symantec Things wasn't necessary to Include Advanced Features????

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Upgraded to Norton System Works 2002 from 2001. NO "Advanced Features" for cleaning out Registry or Diagnosing Hardware Problems. Have gone back to 2001 version.

UncleanSweep

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton's omission of registry sweep in version 2002 is regrettable. That was one of the main reasons I've been buying CleanSweep since the mid '90s. When I upgraded to the latest version, I expected an advance, not a leap backward. CNET's 9 out of 10 rating is beyond belief.

A Castrated Version of Prior Cleansweep Versions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Anyone who has already used and appreciated the depth of features of Norton's prior versions of CleanSweep is in for a gut-wrenching experience if they buy this version expecting something more advanced. What they will find instead is a 1994-era uninstaller, gutted of over a dozen of the utilities which made it something more. You will not find mention of any of this on Symantec.com unless you search deeply into its support database. An outrage!

I miss registry sweep!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Well, it is still a good and user-friendly product but I really think it wasn't that great to take away the ability to review the registry changes! Another thing that I've always found annoying with this product is that because of the safety sweep you can't actually take away any of the cookies within the program, you have to go to your browser to do this. The list is good however, but as I said still annoying that you can't actually delete them from within the program.

Norton WC-Sweep

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have installed the new version of Cleansweep and I have to say that it`s a big joke!.The ability to detect the registry modifications is almost zero.Hundredes of reg entries are left behind after a so called "uninstallation" I do not recommend this program at all. The old version of Cleansweep is perfect (detects most of the reg changes) but is not compatible wit XP. It is my duty to inform ya guys that there is a program much more advanced than CleanSweep, compatible with XP,and I`m fully satisfied with it.Its name is Ashampoo Uninstaller and you can find it at www.tucows.com.

Inadequate product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Quarterdeck "Cleansweep" far superior; removes more useless entires: programs, dlls, other remnants and registry entries.

User Rating: 8/10

Great Program, needs to work with registry more though

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton Cleansweep cleans out your recycle bin, internet clutter, etc. However, their isn't much you can do with the registry with it, that's the only thing this program needs extra. I think Norton Utilities includes Cleansweep, but get Cleansweep it's a great program to have. It's either 2001 or 2000 version of CS that won't have the main control program run, can't remember which. Good program though.

User Rating: 3/10

Might delete important data files earns a 9?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I really don't want to point a finger but it appears that Norton and Cnet have a relationship going on. "The bad"--"Might delete important data file accidentally" earns Norton a 9 out of 10? This program has caused major, major problems for me and many I know. "The bad" scenario is absolutely true, almost always. Windows add/remove may not remove absolutely every file, but it leaves shared files alone and the ones it leaves behind don't cause any problems. The add/remove feature of Windows has NEVER deleted any important data files from my hard drive. I lost my money when I purchased CleanSweep. Anybody want a free copy of Cleensweep 2002?

User Rating: 1/10

NO NO Norton

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Delets important files. Impossible to uninstall. Am finally having to reformat my hard drives to get rid of it. Worst product I have ever bought.

User Rating: 4/10

Stay with prior versions 2000/2001

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Without reiterating the same comments of many of the other reviewers, I would stay with or try to locate a verison prior to 2002.

User Rating: 9/10

came with system works

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product works very well. of course it is not an up grade, but came with the norton system works I purchased.Very good product, and I highly recomend it!

User Rating: 8/10

great but not different from past 2k ver.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: 2002 doesn't seem to have any really new stuff from previous versions, but 2002 works great the first and every time i use it.

User Rating: 7/10

Best Around

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Many options given to user. With safty scan on a very safe and wonderful tool to have, although the Norton System Suite has ALL utilities for a few dollars more. Windoctor great to have.

User Rating: 6/10

Disappointing - stay with earlier version

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No registery cleaner. That is something a cleaning utility is needed for. Earlier versions had it, so this is a real step backward for Norton.

User Rating: 7/10

Fewer features than previous version!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a great product for novice PC users, and I recommend it to my limited-ability/interest friends. BUT, the loss of features for more advanced users makes it a DUBIOUS UPGRADE. Like others, I figured the Registry cleanup would be even better in this version, only to find it GONE! If you have 2001, keep it and just upgrade AntiVirus. If you don't have CleanSweep yet, consider buying the 2001 version to save $$$ and get more features.

User Rating: 1/10

Have had problems installing it

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Had problems installing it. After I finally installed it, it would not run. Symantec tech support pages show that upteen users have had same problem. Several Symantec techies admitted that they did not know how to solve the problem, having known about it for 6 months. They have lost a long term customer.

User Rating: 5/10

NO BANG for your buck here

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Older versions had more features. This latest offering is a waste of time and disk space.

User Rating: 2/10

Huge downgrade from 2001 version

Pros:

Cons:

Review: So much has been removed from the 2002 version compared to the 2001 version that I feel this cannot be sold as the same product. I uninstalled it within 15 minutes. Very disappointed.

User Rating: 4/10

Downgrade

Pros:

Cons:

Review: cs2002 is a disapointment! Without the advanced features button as in 2000 and the ability to check the registry and duplicate or redundant files, Norton CS2002 does nothing an average user cant do using Windows tools. Dont waste your money!

User Rating: 4/10

CNET are Norton Shills

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As you can read from the other user reviews, the "new improved" version is absolutely pathetic, now without the ability to clean out the registry, one of the most important tasks in an uninstall. Makes this version significantly NOT worth the upgrade from a much maligned (at least in XP) add/remove programs. A much better alternative is Iolo's System Mechanic, which has much of Cleansweep's older features that work in XP.

Corporate Greed Trumps: Paying More, Getting Less

Pros:

Cons:

Review: There is no reason to charge more, and give the customer less, unless Symantec wants to alienate its loyal customers. It has removed many of the great tools found in 2001, and has not made any effort to either supply any upgrade, or download, which addresses these core issues. As a flimsy excuse, the web site uses doublespeak to laugh at the customer, and say, "We're screwing you, and you can't do anything about it."

User Rating: 5/10

What a let down!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I agree with the other posts. The 2001 version was worthwile. The 2002 is worthless. A waste of time. Go with System Mechanic.

User Rating: 5/10

Please return Quarterdeck Functionality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was quite suprised as mentioned in earlier post that Symantec would remove most of the functionality that was available in "Quarterdeck's" Clean Sweep. I am going to uninstall this and look for an alternative.

User Rating: 5/10

What happened to...?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Did I get a bum version or something? I have every version of clean sweep since it was originally made by Quarterdeck. I re-installed CS2002 cause I thought I missed something. Where are the options for the registry sweep, delete dll files, orphaned files, etc.??? Did I miss something...?

User Rating: 5/10

A real disappointment

Pros:

Cons:

Review: With the exception of the Antivirus, I don't use anything else in the System Works 2002. The registry sweep and genie in the old version was very useful, without it you might as well just buy the antivirus and save the rest of your money for an automatic dog polisher, you'll use it just as much or more than the new "CleanSweep"(not). As a matter of fact, I'm just about ready to blow off XP and go back to ME just so I can use the older Norton Utilities and some of my older peripherals will work. I'm tired of upgrades that are put out just for the sake of getting people to spend more money. For crying out loud, new software should be improvements over the old, not just different. And as for C/Net, I think you've been out voted, this version of System works is pretty lame. Only people that don't know the difference will like this one. It may be time to go shopping......

User Rating: 2/10

Lousy!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Symantec "dumbed down" CleanSweep by omitting RegistrySweep, etc., so I returned ALL the Norton programs and switched to Ontrack SystemSuite, which I find is MUCH better and more complete. For me, Symantec/Norton has dropped out of the utilities picture.

User Rating: 4/10

the took out Registry Sweep

Pros:

Cons:

Review: that was the whole reason that ibought the 2002 thinking that it was gona have it in there but NO it wasn't. and now i can' find my Nortons 2001 to reinstall it. Registry sweep was IMO one of the best features of the Clean Sweep. Nortons says they took it out cuz the majority of the people said they never used it or didn't understand it. I say BAH!!! put it back in darn it!!! anyone know of a program that does the same thing that Registry Sweep 2001 did?

User Rating: 9/10

Another strike for Symantec

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought it the last week and the difference is so big. It´s easy to use and to install. The machine continues working well and you can delete or compress the data files or the software that you have installed but not used.

User Rating: 1/10

Now Worthless

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When I first got Cleansweep years ago before Norton bought them out, it really did remove 100% of a program. Registry, boot sector, you name it. Now it does practically nothing. Absolutely worthless. The original creators had the right idea. To bad it has been LOST.

User Rating: 1/10

It's a crippled DOWNgrade!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton, in CleanSweep 2002, has OMITTED the Registry Advanced functions, including RegistrySweep. Symantec claims "user response and interest" has prompted them to do this. They're consumerizing their products, and should remove the "Professional Edition" from their product titles. It's time to drop Norton and move on to alternatives.

User Rating: 5/10

Fails to remove Registry entries

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As a long time user of CleanSweep, I expected the 2002 version to be the best ever; Instead it is the worst, having lost the ability to track most changes made to the Registry during an installation. Symantec tech support says "CleanSweep 2002 does, indeed, track the registry changes, however they are not listed in the summary due to copyright and trademark concerns." However, in the 5 programs that I installed, CS2002 was able to uninstall just one Registry entry, leaving a total of 442 untouched. That lack of ability makes CS no better than the standard Windows Add/Remove feature. This is worthless-ware.

User Rating: 3/10

Norton CleanSweep 2002 Downgrade

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have purchased Norton CleanSweep 2002 and I agree that the uninstaller is just a waste of time and money. Symantec is forcing you to upgrade to their highly-priced product to supplement Windows xp. If you have the older version, which has more capabilities than 2002, you can't run it under Winxp. If you want to run Winxp, you can't have some of the features in the past like registry clean up. Either way, you're screwed. What is Norton up to? Getting Norton CS 2003 Professional edition to get back the registry editor? hmmm - greedy aren't they?

User Rating: 10/10

The best of them all and I have tried them all.

Pros:

Missing Some Features from Previous Versions

Pros:

Cons:

Pick of the worse??

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this program expecting all the fancy things found in a real cleanup program. Registry, duplicate files, etc. etc.. etc.. I used the broom, but still left a bunch of dirt behind. w.

Why not PC Mechanic??

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have bought many diferent Norton Products (Suites, Cleansweep, etc.) and they all seem to have one thing in common: They're really big, busy apps. that don't seem to do much of anything, except take control of your computer. Now, I tried Cleansweep, and took it off after an hour, and reinstalled PC Mechanic, which does it all, Including the reg cleaner, and other options, such as Internet cleaner, Dialup Optimization, ect. It's also a lot faster than Norton, and does the most complete disk cleanup I've seen to date. The best part is that it is a quiet program that doesn't hog a lot of space. Also, It seems like you folks at CNET are endorsing some pretty shoddy software of late. What gives??

User Rating: 5/10

Schwag!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Cleansweep 2002 is a joke! Like most previous users of CS versions, I was very disappointed that the registry sweep is missing. All CS is does now is stupid remedial tasks that a lame AOL user can't figure out. *** is CS good for? Wasting space on you HD?

window dressing

Pros:

Cons:

Review: With the exception of a few products like Antivirus, Symantec products are garbage. Once upon a time Norton Utilities were a useful collection of tools, but it seems with every new version they remove the last remaining useful features. They pander to the novice computer user who doesn't have a clue how to perform a few basic system maintenance tasks and leave nothing for the pro user. In short the only thing keeping this company afloat is the same thing that keeps Apple afloat - window dressing, knowing how to sell multicoloured fashion accessories to the fools who buy them.

Review: A downgrade from CS 2001, no more "advance" section allowing for registry sweep and so on - should have checked better before bying. I don't understand the 9/10 rating, it's a little misleading.

User Rating: 5/10

not for intermediate or advanced users

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Doesn't do anything to clean up he registry, the only way it can effectly go beyond the windows standard uninstaller is by monitoring everything from when it was first installed. Should I redo my whole system so I can have "uncle norton" look out for me from the begining? The norton clean sweep doesn't "shred" what it cleans (write over deleted data so it can't be recovered) so it doesn't even fill a secure need. It just does a simple cookies, internet cache, temp folder and active x clean. All of these can be cleaned quite easily be a savy user that knows how to use 'windows explorer' For novice users, it's fine. For more experienced users, its a waste of time - you can easily do the same cleaning without having another application running in your taskbar - or probably find a freeware application that works just as well. I bought this cleaner "free after rebate" and I think that was a bad deal! - I feel bad for those who pay $25-30 for it! Norton: please tell Clean Sweep 2002 was an accident - when does the useful version come out?

It saved my computer!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had a disastrous encounter with an external CD-RW drive that never worked, but it did leave its nasty entrails all over my computer. Getting rid of the last vestige of that nightmare seemed impossible, until I got Norton Clean Sweep 2002. Nasty entrails are all gone, computer operates much better, and I can sleep tight at night knowing I won't face a disaster in the morning!

User Rating: 9/10

dependable and thorough

Pros:

Cons:

Review: cleansweep is easy to use and fast just what someone needs who either don't know how or don't want to go through the individual steps to clean files themselves. I've been using it for years along with system works and find it a very worthwhile utility.

User Rating: 4/10

Based on past experience with Norton

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It seems every time I use a Norton product I end up with more headaches than I started with. With the previous version of Nortor Clean Sweep, if you don't already have a good working knowledge of how the Registry works, you are heading for misery. If you already KNOW how to manipulate the Registry, you don't need Norton Clean Sweep. This version seems to offer even less. Better to take the time to learn how to tweak the Registry (after backing EVERYTHING up), than leaving it to a program like Norton. What we really need is a decent program from Microsoft to get rid of the junk an uninstall leaves behind.

Registry CleanSweep

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I agree with anonymous. I too used quarterdeck cleansweep for years and it saved my windows 95 and 98 many times from bleeding ulcers. Now have XP and am wondering if it can handle any clean sweep because of "system restore" feature. Will wait for future CNET comments. Holding my opinion for now.

User Rating: 7/10

Easy to use but restricted.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Has never stalled my system or removed essential files. However, it does not seem to scan the registry and that hurts the product.

User Rating: 8/10

Does the job it's intended for

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Excellent at removing orphaned files and clutter left behind by deleted programs. Goes hand in hand with Norton Utilities which has a registry cleaner.

Don't Be Fooled!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Okay review is for the 2000 version but what I have to say should apply to this one and that is that if you go to their website and look for the article under CleaneSweep entitled What NOT To Monitor you will be agast at how many programs there are. When I contacted Tech Support about how I can determine when to use it or not I was told that as a general rule of thumb only the most popular items are designed to be removed. Oh yeah, well all the products on the no go list were popular and if I have to make a judgement then why bother? Like putting a gun to my head every day and asking me to judge if it is loaded or not before you pull the trigger. Computer life is already a full time hassle, who needs more? No, I just do not comprehend why every computer mag votes this (or any other of their prods) so high. Do they not review the WARNING material on their sites.

Potential consumers should weigh up the alternatives before departing with their hard earned money.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product is clearly aimed at users who don't have the time or inclination to learn how to use the windows registry editor! A quick visit to www.regedit.com or a search engine like google would save most people the $29.95 they would otherwise have wasted on this product.

A let down from previous versions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: They've removed the advanced features in this version. Personally 2001 Cleansweep was more usefull. When I questioned Norton Customer support they suggested I ask for a refund and reinstall Cleensweep 2001. Thanks for your support Mr Norton for many years of being a Loyal customer.

very good and easy to use.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used it for 4 years. Then I got a new version just a few mounths ago. and it is very fast and easy to use.

User Rating: 3/10

Interfered with my trading program

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Once deleted the problems went away. Its the Registry bits that need sweeping up more than the disc.

use the panda software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I USE THE PANDA SOFTWARE AND IT IS THE BEST TRY IT OUT AT PANDA SOFTWARE.COM I HAD A TECH EMAIL ME WHAT WAS THE BEST SOFTWARE TO BUY.

User Rating: 10/10

The best uninstaller I've used.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Talk about an all-in-one package. This one is so easy to use even a novice like myself found it a breeze to work with.

User Rating: 3/10

Downgrade from prior versions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: CleanSweep 2002 is a major dissapointment. It is a rip off--especially for users of earlier version who believe they are getting an upgrade. It is in fact a DOWNgrade. Am uninstalling CleanSweep 2002 and UPgrading to a prior version. Am amazed that Cnet rates this version as good.

User Rating: 5/10

Doesn't do anything anymore.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Nice GUI but all the functionality seems to have been removed??? I want my registry repaired when using an uninstaller!

User Rating: 9/10

the best on the market

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used CleanSweap 2000 for about 2 years now.I'd like to know if Cleansweep 2002 is still better.Maybe you could compare both and send the results in an email to all subscribers.

The Plus Pack of utilities

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A worthless pile of fluff. All the really useful features have been removed. I can do the same thing faster with Windows uninstaller for XP. I also think many of these positive one liner reviews are bogus. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

User Rating: 6/10

NORTON IS OUT TO LUNCH

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As many have noted, features have been removed. I bought 2002 System works for XP. Disk Doctor & scandisk not compatable with xp. If it doesn't monitor the install it leave the same trash windows unistaller does. Some years ago Norton had Uninstall Deluxe, BRING IT BACK. Time to look elseware.

User Rating: 4/10

Poor Product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No info on what the product did after you run it. Why does it not work on the registry. This program DOES NOT live up the the normal high quality of Norton products.

User Rating: 5/10

Uninspired Product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm a little confused by CNET's review. I have this product as part of Norton Utilities 2002 and find it does little if anything more than the XP uninstaller. You should note in the review it says basically that it cleans out the internet cache and recyle bin. Well that about sums it up. If a user can't do these tasks w/o a utility than chances are they have trouble pressing the power button on. I will say that overall the other utilities are excellent - but CleanSweep 2002 as a standalone product is a major dud. It appears to me to be another CNET corporate sponsored review. If anyone is looking for a good registry cleaner try RegVac from http://superwin.com/

User Rating: 6/10

Still Good in Many Ways.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used Norton for years & the only bad part the 2002 Pro Version is the Clean Sweep does not clean out the Registry like the old version did. Add the advanced features back & Norton will be the only one to buy.

User Rating: 3/10

Stripped Down Rip Off

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The 2002 version does NOT contain the advanced features that made the product great. I bought Norton System Works Pro so I had to uninstall Clean Sweep 2002 and reinstall Clean Sweep 2001 just to have the better features. If Windows XP does not accept the 2001 version, I will uninstall it completely and go with System Mechanic. Don't get ripped off! 2002 is NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!

User Rating: 9/10

Works like a charm and gets you back to life as usual.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I liked the installer, the user interface and the ease of use of this product.

User Rating: 10/10

I am still using it...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned CleanSweep since it's first release (back when Quaterdeck produced it)and it works every time.

User Rating: 10/10

All Windows users must have Norton CleanSweep.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product is a must for all users, that want a stable and clean system...

User Rating: 4/10

less is less

Pros:

Cons:

Review: They have gutted the product from what is was. No point in buying it. System Mechanic has all the features that Clean Sweep dropped. I guess Symantic plans on a Super Pro version for money to include all the things they took out of the regular version.

User Rating: 6/10

Less Value

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I feel Norton has been providing less and less value over the years: I feel they buy up other products and then strip good functions out of them. Also I feel Norton drops support of their old versions too quickly. I use to be a real fan of Norton, but now I look to other's products first.

User Rating: 10/10

Will not work with windows ME

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have tried and tried to make this work. I went to there techs and they said to call some one about getting my money back. It says right on the box, that it will work with windows ME. They lied.

User Rating: 8/10

Dependable and have used it 6 yrs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recommend to people that want CleanSweep to think about the whole process of utilities, and buy SystemWorks-2002 for about $59.00. It includes CleanSweep, Norton Utilities, and Norton Anti-Virus, all rolled into one nice clean install. Watch the paper for rebates, and you can get it for about $39.00

User Rating: 3/10

Upgrades are supposed to be better right?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have two words for you--"Registry Editor" Why have it in 2001, but NOT 2002??? 2001 is less expensive and much better...stick with it.

User Rating: 7/10

It's slow...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: On my Pentium II 350 Cleansweep takes ages to analyze the installed programmes. It's unusable slow...

User Rating: 5/10

1 step forward, 9 steps back.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I get as much 'perceived' capability with the uninstaller that came with WIN XP. I used to use it to clean out the really weird stuff and bought the newer version for use with XP. BIG MISTAKE! All the good features have been removed and now it's just ANOTHER crappy Norton product. I want my registry and file cleaner back!

User Rating: 9/10

The one, the only....

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Does a thorough job removing files, and protecting shared files that would lead to un-stability if removed. Have used this program since it was put out there by QuarterDeck. Trust it.

User Rating: 8/10

Quick, Efficient and easy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton Cleansweep is the easiest uninstaller I've ever used. The fast and safe cleanup is so easy to use. The uninstaller is the most efficient part. I highly recommend this program.

User Rating: 1/10

Read the reviews 1st!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: after reading all the boo-hoo about less features in 2002 version, can i just say what's so hard about reading about it before you buy it. I did, and when i saw less features, [registry etc] I immediatly bought the 2001 version. a no- brainer.. then again, i'm also not a "gotta be 1st on the block to have it" type.

Clean Sweep works as advertised

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Clean Sweep helps keep the clutter off my hard drive. It works best in conjunction with its download monitoring feature but does a good job of uninstalling unmonitored programs.

User Rating: 10/10

it gets the job done right the 1st time

Pros:

Cons:

Review: very basic and easy to understand. User friendly including handy optional tools

User Rating: 5/10

Doesn't work as advertised

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program says that it will clean any instalation. However, I've been left with many leftovers from uninstalled programs. For example, the uninstalled programs still appear in the "Add/Remove Progs" control panel. And worst of all the program left old program associations. When I uninstalled an mp3 player, windows was looking for this program when trying to play an mp3. I had to manually set the Media player as the program to use for mp3. A huge hole in this program is a registry cleaner/editor. Norton has failed.

User Rating: 4/10

Deleted the important part !!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Why the hell would you possibly ever want to make an upgrade that takes away features. Bring back Registry Editor

User Rating: 3/10

So what does this thing REALLY DO?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It doesn't seem to do anything. The interface the operation of the program seems to be clunky. It comes with System Works, and I uninstalled it. It would get in the way when you're constantly installing and uninstalling things.

User Rating: 3/10

Pay more, get less

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Symantec/Norton's decision to remove advanced features such as the Registry Sweeper from Cleansweep was ill-advised. It also appears to reflect their opinion of users in general - check out the sparseness of details and poor usability within their website, and you'll have a good idea what their programs are like.

User Rating: 7/10

preety good

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Needs more help about Advanced options and some instructions for safe cleaning. Especialy about Registry cleaning.

User Rating: 10/10

Great work

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Once again Norton does the best!. i really like what Norton does here, and works effectivly.

User Rating: 6/10

was unaware it was stripped down

Pros:

Cons:

Review: as a prior owner of the original quaterdeck product,i attempted to install on win xp but no luck, noncompatible. after running down and purchasing the renamed 2002 version by norton, i was shocked after installing that many of the old features are no longer included. the registry edit and unwanted file removal features are now gone.

User Rating: 7/10

2001 a lot more useful

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Where did the Registry Sweep go? That was the main reason to have this product.

User Rating: 6/10

Less than 2001

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Missing Registry Sweep and the rest of the Advanced section! I guess Mr. Norton decided the average Joe isn't smart enough to know how to use those features. That's unfortunate because they were the only reason I bought CleanSweep over six years ago in the first place and five updates since. It looks like it is time to check out the competition...
