I did not realize that I have seriously under-utilized my laptop's horse power by using Windows XP for a while on my Intel Laptop until I installed SuSE 9.2 Professional for my laptop. I just loved it. I have very little Linux experience and despite the fact that Linux is for geeks, SuSE has just made it so simple and easy to install and use even for casual computer users.
I have purchase it from the Discountdownloadsoftware.com in a discoount price.

I'm new to Linux, having used Windows based PC's for over 20 years. I decided to give Linux a try at the encouragement of friends in IT, who prefer it for handling the server. Quick comments: the installation on my Windows XP PC was quick and easy, the default set up my PC with a dual boot (giving me the choice each time I log on), my MS Word documents opened with ease as did the ppt docs, though some formating was lost in the PPT transitions. The only difficulty so far has been importing my address list into the Linux based organizer. Once I get that to work, I may be a convert! For an experienced user, this is well worth a try. For a new user, without a vested library of MS documents or anyone that's tired of Microsoft's laborious registration process, I'd go straight to Suse!

Suse 8.1 could not recognize my notebook hardwares (HP Pavilion ZE1115)! Plus, the graphical interface is worse than Red Hat 8.0. As for installation? Please... Red Hat 8.0 is much simpler than SUSE. I wasted good money on Suse 8.1 for nothing. Alternate to Red Hat 8.0 or even 9.0? Try Mandrake 9.1 (it just came out)! This distro will impress you! But no matter what DO NOT buy suse 8.1.

I understand there are drivers out there, but SMC said Red Hat has the drivers in the distribution. I then got Red Hat 8.0 Pro, but didn't like it nearly as much as SuSE. Also, Red Hat cost $129 versus the $69 I paid for SuSE. I now use SuSE for 90+% of my work, which indludes word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, email and the Internet. I bought Sun StarOffice 6, but the built in OpenOffice is just as good.

I've been wanting to switch to Linux for years. I could never find a distro that would support some of the hardware that I had (long story). I've been using Windows since Win 3.1. I'm pretty good with it. Never could get it(Win 98 SE) to begin to be stable on the Compaq machine I am running. After getting really ... perturbed with how unstable the system became with the latest version of Norton Pro System Works, I picked this distro of Linux off the shelf of the PX and bought it. I thought I might be able to get it to work, this time. That was 6 days ago. IT'S GREAT! I've owned this system for over 4 years, now. (I have upgraded it multiple times) FINALLY, I have a computer that does almost everything I want/need that is stable. I love Ximian Evolution. It runs fine ... if you upgrade it to the current version. The easiest way to do that is use Gnome's Red Carpet updater. It is kind of buried in the Gnome directories, but it is there. Once you get that up and running, you can do all sorts of stuff. Now, I just have to download the software to run my Handspring, finish configuring my scanner, and get my webcam up and running. I know what I need to do/where to go to make that happen, just haven't had the time yet. The only things that I cannot directly crossover, at the moment, are the programs Age of Empires II: Conquerors (an MS program, imagine that!), and Finale, a music transcription program. But I have not looked into ways to do anything other than make the Win version under an emulator. This was the best $39 I have spent on any computer-related thing, ever!

I have been a long time SuSE Linux user (since 6.1). I have tinkered with Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware, but each time, I have been driven back to SuSE because of its ease of installation, included application base, and the fact that system files are located "where they should be" within the filesystem (for those who like to play with the innumerable configuration files, using a text editor). <br> I only have four little gripes about 8.1: <br> - KWinTV's "Full Screen" mode doesn't work correctly anymore. <br> - I occasionally get SIGTERM crashes with Konqueror (never did with 8.0). Fortunately, this never seems to bring down the GUI or Linux itself. <br> - 8.1 fails to kill the power on shutdown, after unmounting all the drives/volumes. <br> - The Online Update feature no longer provides you with a download progress bar graph. <br> Other than that, 8.1 is a great product, and I am anticipating that 8.2 will be even better. <br> But if you're looking to build a low-cost, stable, robust server, stick with SuSE 8.0. It is slightly more stable, in my opinion. Just be sure to keep up-to-date on your patches (this is to be said for ANY mission-critical server, regardless of operating system).

Superior alternative to Windowsby - December 30, 2002

Review:
I have been using SuSE Linux since last summer and the system has never gone down on me. Not once. It's fast, elegant and feature rich. It comes with all of the productivity applications I need including a full suite of truly excellent Internet programs such as the Galeon and Konqueror browsers, KNode news reader and KMail email client. Unlike the CNET review posted, it is possible and easy to run Ximian Evolution as a PIM in KDE although it is a native Gnome application. When you choose to install Evolution the appropriate Gnome libraries are installed and I find the application runs flawlessly in KDE. Speaking of KDE, this desktop is far superior to Windows XP. It is highly configurable to suit your own tastes in terms of functionality and appearance. I find Linux with KDE a joy to use and rock solid in terms of stability. Be sure to check out kdelook.org for all kinds of goodies for your KDE desktop. I think the inclusion of Gnome is nice but largely irrelevant where KDE is a superior alternative. SuSE 8.1 even includes a nice assortment of games too. And when it comes to games there are many options for the PC gamer who wants the stability and convenience of Linux. Quake III, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and others are available for Linux (downloadable native binaries) and for compatability with many Windows games there is something called WineX which allows you to play many great Windows games such as Everquest, Jedi Knight II, Max Payne, Starcraft, Diablo II and many, many more. Be sure you check out www.transgaming.com if you want Linux be your gaming platform. WineX works beautifully with SuSE Linux in my experience. An Nvidia video card is highly recommended for gaming in Linux by the way. Nvidia to their credit supports Linux with excellent native drivers. Also, Bioware has nearly completed a port of Neverwinter Nights for Linux which should be available for download to owners of the game soon. I know I am looking forward to it. I have used Red Hat 7.3 and 8.0 as well as Mandrake Linux 9.0 and as far as I am concerned, nothing else can compare to SuSE Linux for ease of use and simple online maintenance. The YaST2 configuration program makes customizing, configuring and updating your Linux system a snap. Installation on my HP system which has been highly customized and upgraded for gaming was flawless. I use my PC constantly and SuSE Linux has proven itself an excellent and viable alternative to Windows. I hope you'll try it. I think you will be very happy if you do.

I've been using SuSE since 6.2, and whilst I've dabbled at RedHat 7.2-8.0 and Mandrake 8.0/9.0, I keep on coming back to SuSE. Why? SuSE 8.1 has been rock solid for me on laptop, desktop and servers and I've wiped Windows XP at work. The one whine I would make is that the distributed version of Mozilla in SuSE 8.1 uses gcc 3.2, so the Sun JRE plugin (gcc 2.96 compiled) will not work. If you replace the shipped Mozilla version with a new binary that breaks interdependencies with Evolution and stops that working, but hohum. Oh - and in answer to an earlier post you CAN install and try SuSE for free, via a FTP installation. SuSE just don't release ISO images - partly cos they include commercial software in the stock install (that RedHat doesn't in the free ISOs). Yhey already put enough back into Open Source IMHO so try it and then cough up teh 40 bucks

Linux is still a tinkerer's toyby - December 26, 2002

For $40 (US) it's very hard to say anything negative about SuSE 8.1; YaST2 is extremly slick and glides throu the installation process (twice again as easy as any Microsoft OS to install). with a few tips from SuSE's installation support I was able to figure out how to correctly configure a few peices of hardware that were giving me trouble (namely my DVD-ROM). The included manual (with the retail version) is very good at distilling the basics of Configuring Linux. The software bundle that comes with the retail version of SuSE is simply mind boggling, and while most of this software is readily available for download, having it all pre-loaded onto disc made it more than worth the money I spent buying a retail copy. Having said all that, there a few caveats; if you don't enjoy tinkering with your OS, or if you don't have a lot of "computer sense" in the first place, lInux can be a trying experience. While I would heartily recommend this OS to anyone, I would append to that recommendation that you also pick up a good Linux book like "Running Linux" or "Linux in a Nutshell" both from O'Reilly Press. Have alot of fun!

Well worth a lookby - December 26, 2002
Pros:

Install was no problem. The main default applications are good basic alternatives to their Windows counter parts - KDE desktop, Konqueror web browser, OpenOffice.org, and KOffice. Lots of great games and alternative software too - Netscape, GNOME, etc. Still working on proper setup for some non basic software items such as power management, firewall, nuisance start-up error messages. Have some compatibility issues with my cheap inkjet printers (function OK but not fully). SuSE Linux is a legitmate alternative to Windows and well worth a look. Save yourself much effort by looking at SuSE hardware database to make sure you have hardware that will work with SuSE 8.1 - video/audio chip set, printer, etc.

Install process was easy, and of note is the first boot after install I saw "Hardware scan on Boot". the first time I have seen a distro scan for new hardware without prompting. The font problem is easy to resolve, compile and install Free Type server and you can load any TT fonts for ALL apps.

I think that the Professional edition is the best all-around Linux distibution out there. It really easy to install. It also includes a ton of packages so that as as you add more functionality you don't always have to go to the web to download the rpms you need.

I've used Linux for 6 years now: first tried a lot of other distributions (Red Hat, Slackware,...) and there was always something wrong. With SuSE, everything (printer, internet, all peripherals) worked right away. For a price that's a fraction of a bare Windows OS, you get a better OS and more applications than most people can possibly use in a normal lifetime.

Governments should be looking at this.by - December 16, 2002

If you are in Government and want to reduce costs, start looking at this Distro, baby! Pros: Incredibly easy install. Simple user interface. Great range of apps (OpenOffice, Gimp etc.) Reiser File System rocks! This is achingly close to prime-time. I did a hardware and software upgrade (from 7.2) simultaneously and it preserved EVERYTHING. Awesome! Cons: OpenOffice locked up and crashed. A novice user would have to log out to kill it. A bit of a resource pig. A 300 Mhz machine with 96 Meg. RAM seriously bogs at the load (vs. same apps in Windoze 2000) More vendors have to be brought on stream for Linux support e.g. Canon's Multi-function printers. Suse's ftp site is very slow and often hangs.

not bad but there are features that need improvingby - December 15, 2002

O.k. I upgraded from 8.0 and found that the gnome desktop is not as good as the 8.0. Ok also with the old gnome desktop I was able to use a gui interface to kill a locked program on the task bar. Now I have to us ps -aux and find the pid number and use kill "pidnumber." annoying... However the other problems encountered were in apache. The cgi doesn't work as well, but I am not blaming SuSe on that. By far Suse has the best operating system for linux box so far. I keep my box running morning noon and night and never crashes. For stability and device drivers Suse is #1. Gcc and makefile are not loaded by default which is a plus with Red Hat. www.ottodachat.com Ok.

Fails to mount cd, dvd or cdrw, XF86 crashes. If you have two drivers CD an a DVD they can't be recognized from KDE you need to enter as root, change /etc/fstab file, and every time you need to read a cd, audio cd, dvd or burn you need to enter as root in the console mount the device and then use on kde. Please staw ayaw from SUSE, use instead RedHat 8.0, Debian or TurboLinux, all they are better than suse.

Had installed Redhat 5.x, 6.x, 7.x and 8.0 and it was good. But then I installed Suse 8.1 and it's better with installation, configuration etc. Are you a beginner starts with Suse 8.1. I use open office, mozilla and gimp both on windows and Suse PC's at home and work and everybody is happy. admin is easy now, performance is good but you have to play with the fonts and plugins to get it OK. Even 3D games are working now.

I made the switch a while agoby - December 10, 2002

I made the switch a while ago to SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional. OpenOffice provides all of the office applications that are compatible with MS Office 2000, Ximian Evolution is an awesome PIM (Personal Information Manager). Use Outport (see sourceforge.net) to get your Outlook e-mail into Evolution. And for web sites that require IE, I use Opera 7. However, I have become well-aquainted with Mozilla (1.1), which I also use at the office instead of IE, plus Opera 7 if some web site requires IE (usually for security reasons, which makes zero sense). And best of all, of this software is free!

On it's way to being a Windows killerby - December 6, 2002
Pros:

SuSE 8.1 has to be the best all around Linux distribution by far. The comment about Ximian's Evolution mail/organizer program isn't correct in saying that it's not accessible in the KDE desktop. I works just fine for me, especially after using Online Update to get the latest fixes for it. YaST Inline Update (YOU) is used in the same fashion as windows update. Unlike Windows though, the Linux community doesn't hide flaws in the software. They offer a fast and current amount of fixes to any software that needs them and does so with a turn around time of about 3 days or less, far better than Microsoft for the same fixes in known bugs and vunerabilities. I highly recommend using SuSE.

Best detection this time on my wheeled mouse, finally got it right without messing around with it. (Tech support for this in the past stunk). Other than these few things and poor Gnome support it is a pretty good program.

There is a Better distro for 1st time Linux usersby - December 6, 2002

Suse is a great Linux Distro for anyone who has some experience with Linux already ! But the best Distro I've seen for 1st time as well as hardcore Linux users who want a fast, easy install with a incredible range of application choices, a very intuitive menu and graphical environment, and tons of support, go with Mandrake Linux 9... it outshines both Suse and RedHat, particualry for 1st time Linux users. You can even download Mandrake for free. Choose 1 CD download for the basic installation, or the 3 cd download for tons of applications including the Gnome desktop, Open Office Suite, Mozilla web browser, Galeon, Konqueror, etc, etc..
