Next to other mini-USB drives, Lexar's JumpDrive Secure looks rather squat; it's 2.5 inches long, 1 inch wide, and 0.37 inches thick. Made of gray plastic, the JumpDrive Secure has hard, black rubberized grips on either side that give it an exceptionally sturdy feel. The drive's name and capacity are stamped on the front, near a tiny green LED that lights up during transfers. A small metal keyring hangs off the back of the drive.

The JumpDrive Secure comes loaded with Lexar's easy-to-use Safe Guard software, which lets you divide the drive into a public zone accessible to anyone and a private zone that you can password-protect. However, like most other minidrive password-protection apps, if you decide to change any of the settings, such as how many files you wish to password-protect, all of the files on the drive will be deleted. As with most of the minidrives we looked at, Windows 98 users will need driver software. Lexar makes its drivers available on its Web site.

The JumpDrive Secure comes in capacities ranging from 128MB to 512MB. The 256MB model costs about $64, or 25 cents per megabyte, which is very inexpensive.
