Denon CDR W1500 - CD player / CD recorder (discontinued)

Denon CDR W1500 - CD player / CD recorder

Entered CNET Catalog: 05/02/2003

SKU: CDR-W1500

Manufacturer: Denon

Manufacturer description

The CDR-W1500 is a CD + CD-R/CD-RW recorder with separate CD and CD-R/CD-RW drives in a single unit to provide you with a variety of recording and playback options for CDs and recordable CD-R and CD-RW discs. Recording is possible not only from CDs but from externally connected analog sources as well. The CDR-W1500 offers the convenient Scan Rec Dubbing function that lets you scan for the tracks you want before you record them. Playback features include Dual Play, for independent playback from the CD and CD-R/CD-RW drives, as well as a wealth of recording/playback combinations that take advantage of the two independent drives. Sound quality, of course, is eminently supported by DENON's world-renowned audio technology.

Great quality and feature packed

Pros: HDCD playback, 24-bit DAC, text & titling, great recording capabilities

Cons: Difficult text labling for CD's, recording deck has playback errors before disks are finalized

Review: Overall, this unit is exceptional. The playback on the playback deck is great; especially if you can get your hands on a HDCD disk. The playback is everything I could hope for. Clarity, depth, warm bass and treble. Quick comparisons to older decks will surprise you. I compared 2 JVC decks and a Sony and all 3 came far far short of this unit. Where the Denon unit had warm clean sound and great depth, the other units sounded tinny (is that a word?) and thin.
The recorder works great. Each copy sounds identical to the original. The menu for recording was a little awkward but there's a learning curve. Having the double deck sure makes copying easy. I highly recommend this unit. I gave this unit a 9 because of the awkard recording menu. I'm used to it now but it's still awkward. The sound quality and fit-and-finish is top notch!
