Manufacturer description

Only GoVideo offers the innovative features and capabilities of a state-of-the-art DVD and VCR integrated into one easy-to-use product. Effortlessly transfer VHS tapes onto higher-quality, easier-to-store DVDs. It's time to get rid of your old VHS movies for good! Whether you want to record, play, or listen, the VR4940 does it all. GoVideo's VR4940 model represents the company's first Dual-Deck line combining a DVD recorder and hi-fi VCR all in one, with GoVideo's new EZ Play and MyDVD features. GoVideo's EZ Play feature automatically skips ads, trailers and menus, jumping right to the start of the movie. Simply place the disc in the tray, press the play key, and the movie starts without interruption. GoVideo's MyDVD feature also makes using this DVD player easier than any other both for adults and children. It permanently stores the set-up preferences that on most other DVD players need to be checked or unchecked every time you load a new DVD. The VR4940 model is also capable of video CD playback and features a handy backlit, multi-brand remote. GoVideo, the inventor of the world's first Dual-Deck VCR and DVD+VCR product lines, continues to lead the market with the introduction of pioneering new dual products backed by its patented technologies. No other product on the market today offers the simplicity and convenience of GoVideo's one-touch copy capability.

Quick Take: The GoVideo VR4940 is a dual-deck VCR/DVD recorder that can record on VHS tapes and DVD discs, as well as dub between both formats when using media that's not copyright-protected. Except for the VR4940's black case, backlit remote, and ability to play VCD discs, it offers the same features found in GoVideo's nearly identical VR3930. We did not review the VR4940, but read the VR3930 review for our impressions of that deck.

The DVD recorder fails to record

Pros: Nothing that I can think of!

Cons: It damages DVDs and fails to record on them

Review: The VR4940 freezes in mid recording, from the AV2 source to DVD and fails to save the data. The DVD itself becomes damaged. Many new DVDs are damaged when it is trying to read them and returns a message "corrupt disk".

GoVideo apparently does not exist anymore and when it did, from what I have read, their customer Service left a lot to be desired.

Run, don't walk away from Go-Video

Pros: The case can withstand being thrown in the dumpster by the power cord!

Cons: You name it

Review: I have had to return my first unit after they gave my an upgrade that distroyed it. Now my second unit has very, very, serious recording problems. If you can get anyone from customer service to help you, all they say is it must be the disc I'm using. However, I've used every kind and brand of disc they told me to get. Now, I can't even get through to them (I really think they went belly up), and I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Has a serious recording problem

Pros: fairly easy to use

Cons: can't work well with brand new disks

Review: Hi I bought one of these units and it has problems
I wanted to make a DVD of a vHS tape and found this neat bug - the interesting thing is that their manual states it can be done;
1) Insert a brand new DVD-R disk into the unit
2) Plug in a vhs tape
3) press the VHS button on the remote
4) press the copy button on the remote
5) record for about 10 minutes
6) press pause on the remote
7) fast forward for about 22 minutes on the vHS tape
8) press the copy button on the remote twice

after about 1 minute the TV screen will state "cannot record due to a defective disk'

Doesn't work as a VCR replacement

Pros: Can archive VHS tapes to DVDs

Cons: Timed recordings don't seem to work; poor support; slow

Review: I've been archiving my VHS tapes to DVD's and haven't encountered any huge problems, at least yet.

But then I tried recording a TV show to DVD. The recorder portion worked (even though the instructions didn't tell you to turn off the unit after setting the timer), meaning it powered on and appeared to be recording. But when I attempted to play back the disc or even load it, it issues the msg "Unknown Disc. Check disc again."

I'm using the exact same media (Memorex 8x) I've used for all my other recordings. Nothing on their website about this problem or firmware upgrades. Turned off Auto Clock (seems like one of their listed problems might be the same as a timed recording), but their instructions were wrong. It just rejects the disc and opens the tray. You have no chance of finalizing the disc or anything else.

Does what's it says...painless.

Pros: Great for archiving VHS tapes...also a good DVD player and excellent on air TV tuner included. Easy to use, good interface and menus.

Cons: Occasional dvd-r's not compatible with some dvd players (mostly computer dvd drives)
