"Poor DVD Quality"
Pros: Simple Menu System
Cons: DVD looked worse than orignal VHS
Summary: Even after using the HQ (High Quality) DVD recording setting, the DVD that the 9006 burned was inferior in picture quality to the original VHS quality. I called Lite-On tech support about this. They had me update the firmware which I successfully did.
After the firmware update, I tried again. The picture on the DVD was markedly improved from the first DVD burned with the older firmware. However, the DVD picture quality was still inferior to the quality of the VHS tape. The difference is not huge, but still detectable by the naked eye.
Perhaps I should expect some slight degradation in the quality as the video is transferred from the VHS format to DVD. I'm not a video expert but I know that the VHS looks better than the burned DVD and that is troubling. I am going to return this unit and get another one in hopes that I simply got a lemon. I will report the performance of the replacement machine.Updated
After haggling with Lite-On, I got them to send me another unit. The new unit works great and I am now pleased with the purchase. I would encourage anyone who owns this unit to check the manufacturer's website for firmware updates.
