"Can't even turn it on! Remote doesn't respond either." on by Consumer007
Pros: There really are none.
Cons: Basic operations malfunction PLUS Attitude!
Summary: I suppose to some degree in modern society we adapt some cynicism towards cheap modern electronics being built to break and resign ourselves to the fact the "joy" will only last so long. However, this new product is not even worth the measley 40 bucks, and set a whole new level of low expectations.
Upon plugging it in, one sees only a peristent red light with no response to any buttons on the face or the remote for quite some time. The tray came open, then we literally could not shut it, DVD or no DVD. We then thought okay, cycle the power. The tray then closed. Then after an unpredictable amount of time, we see two blue lights in the play and stop buttons, which we falsely assumed meant we were in business. Only to see the readout greet us (perfect timing) with the phrase "PS off"! Of course it's a technical abbreviation I'm sure, but it completely confirmed the true non-performing nature of the unit with that EXTRA little attitude. How DARE we try to play a DVD on it? I mean the NERVE! When the screen finally did come on, all remote buttons resulted in "INVALID" on the screen.
We decided what the hell, have fun with it (watch for our educational consumer protest video about it on YouTube, however, we feel this might put some emotionally-at-risk consumers over the edge. Glass might shatter, people on the sidewalk downstairs might get hit in the head when it flies out the window. Neighbors might call the landlord to report all the angry screaming and loud shattering noises with sledgehammers in operation. Or if someone's medication isn't in full effect then...who knows?
Does Memorex even check the electronic turds rolling off their conveyor belts and into boxes? Our guess is no, unless they cost at least $120...
We are pursuing the refund. Please only buy this if the recipient is someone you don't like and you want an expensive practical joke. -

"No dts pass through" on by theroys88
Pros: Good PQ and sound
Cons: no dts pass through. Poor menu
Summary: Bought this model back in 2004 and bought another one since I had so much luck with the last one. This may be the same model number but it is much cheaper with more plastic and a worse remote. The last remote was small but this one is even tinier. Dts pass through had been disabled and many of the features that were present on the last version are gone. They have really scaled down this one without scaling down the price. Picture quality seems to be unscathed. It now uses a newer Mediatek encoder and I cannot find the Sunplus deinterlacer chip. It appears this version is using a all in one chip. The insides look like a 10 dollar piece of equipment. I do not expect this one to last as long as my last 2042.

"Better Than The Review Says! A Great Buy!" on by Pan-man
Pros: Unlike the review, there is Component, Composite and S-Video outputs; there is both Dolby Digital and DTS audio compatibilty; and it plays MP3s; for $25.00 on sale at Target, it's a great buy!
Cons: Although it passes both DTS and Dolby Digital, it doesn't include decoders for these like more expensive models. However it passes this information on to your reciever so it can decode the audio.
Summary: Having found it on sale at Target for $25.00, it really has a lot of features, unlike this review says. I've had one for a year, and is doing fine.
