Pros: The best standalone Blu-ray Disc player to date.
Cons: Limited to 5.1-channel analog output. Expensive.
Summary: I've been waiting for over six months for this player to be released. I had the (excessive) cash put aside and have "Notify me!" registrations everywhere I could find them. CNET's review was the first one that highlighted the seriously limited 5.1-channel analog output. This may just be a deal-breaker for me.
A very good HD friend of mine has *three* PS3 consoles, and doesn't play video games. He thinks I'm nuts for not picking up a PS3 as my "standalone" BD player. Unfortunately, I've been dabbling in HD since 1999 and have analog component video inputs and switching everywhere. Alas, the PS3 is an all-digital device with HDMI as the only output option.
I've been dying to purchase a truckload of Blu-ray Disc movies from Amazon, but have been waiting [im]patiently for the DMP-BD50 to ship to the States. Now I'm not completely sure what I'm going to purchase.
My old-fashioned SD DVDs are looking better and better every day ... -

Pros: The FIRST complete BD player
Cons: Price, Not as good as a game player, I supply the memory?
Summary: Well, it's the first complete, buyable BD player.
At that price, I shouldn't have to supply the memory for it (SD card). Load times are still slow.
I refuse to buy a game console. I'm not 16 (physically or emotionally). But it's hard not to say the PS3 is the way to go; better and cheaper. kinda sad really.
Has ANYONE done any BD-Live stuff? Even this review doesn't really talk about it.
If money is not important, I guess this is it. But I'll wait.
I used to think people who said "It's too expensive" were just cheap and creating excuses. But you know what, it IS too expensive. -

Pros: Not everyone can use the PS3 due to the HDMI this player allows one to take advantage of 1080i where as the PS3 does not. That alone passes it up in my book.
Cons: Costs more than a PS3 but at least I can use it.....
Summary: Want a good player with component video look no further.

Pros: Rock solid, made in Japan
Cons: Expensive, few extras
Summary: After wading into the HD waters with a HD-DVD player which lasted all of two days, and other first generation Blu-Ray players which required firmware upgrades just to play a movie all the way through...here is a rock solid performed without too much hype. It's made in Japan, which based on my previous experience with Panasonic products (a first generation plasma tv and a first generation DVD player) almost ensures worry free operation. Downside compared to a PS3 is obvious, no gaming or hard drive capabilities. Upside, it does what it does well.
