Pros Very good picture quality
Cons Limited chapter abilities
Summary I have dubbed from vhs to dvd many times over and haved dubbed several times from my video camcorder to dvd. The picture quality is only as good as the tape I'm dubbing from but picture quality is great when dubbing from my camcorder. I've only had one disk end up in the trash out of the many I've completed. I have never once had a problem finalizing a disk. You can easily create chapters on a ram disk. I wish Panasonic would have made it as simple with the other type of disks also. If you play around with it long enough as I have you can figure out how to create chapters on these other disks also. I recommend that you read the instuctions a time or two before getting started and you should be ok...JKAKC
Pros I WOULD GIVE THIS UNIT A -100
Cons I WAS NICE IN GIVING THEM A -10
Summary I PURCHASED THIS UNIT AFTER THE PRIOR MODED DMR-ES30V FAILED IN WARRANTY. AFTER SPENDING HOURS LEARNING ALL FEATURES THE SYSTEM LOCKED UP.
GO TO STORE FIND OUT THAT THE DMR-ESR40V HAS REPLACED THE 30. BOX INDICATES ALL THE SAME FEATURES.
WRONG-THEY DELETED 95% OF THE MANUAL DUBBING ABILITY. YOU CAN NOT SEE YOUR VCR PLAYING, NOR SEE THE COUNTER WHEN RECORDING TO DVD.
WHEN I CALLED TECHINICAL SUPPORT, WAITED FOR 30 MINUTES, "OH, YEA THAT FUNCTION WAS DELETED BY OUR ENGINEERS". I SAID THE BOX INDICATES BETTER FEATURES. WRONG!
I JUST WASTED ANOTHER FOUR HOURS ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT "YOU SHOULD GET THE OLD UNIT...IT WAS BETTER." THAT QUOTE IS FROM A PANASONIC ENGINEER.
END OF STORY, UPSET ABSOLUTELY!
Pros good price, light
Cons flaw in scheduled recording of more than one program
Summary This dvd recorder has problems which panasonic is aware of. I was unable to record more than one timed program in a day.
I spoke with a customer rep who sent me a CD-ROM that was supposed to correct the problem on it but didn't. Now, since panasonic is fully aware of this problem why haven't they fixed it? Why are they still selling products that has a flaw in it?
I purchased this because it had good reviews, but given the problems I will not purchase another panasonic.
Pros Ease of use and the excellent labeling screen.
Cons Not being able to do chapters on all types of discs.
Summary Not one coaster in 50+ discs. I've used multiple brands at all recording speeds. The finished discs play in several players (including computer) with no problems. I'd recommend this recorder to anyone.

Pros It is easy to dub from VHS to DVD, if you thoroughly read the manual
Cons Constantly hangs; resets don't work most of the time; even unplugging the unit doesn't help; will change playback modes for VHS and DVD on its own
Summary If there was a way to rate it a ZERO, I would. The unit has hung twelve times in less than two months. At first I could reset it, after several tries, and it would be okay for a few days. Now I can't even do a reset.
Unplugging the unit does not help. It changes playback mode for VHS and DVD without any user interaction.
The user manual is very long and if you don't read the entire thing, you will miss the part about finalizing the DVD so you can play it on other devices. This information isn't in the step-by-step instructions for dubbing. It is earlier in the manual.
A collegeau purchased a different in August and she said that it worked fine for the first couple of months, put then she couldn't dub any more and the unit finally quit working.
I think that I will give the manufactures six more months to come up with a better product and just return this one for money back.
