"unique display formatting range" on by GLNC

Pros: can display 2:35 panavision full screen vertically

Cons: 720p out only on HDMI cabler (480p on component v)

Summary: Has several image zoom settings specific to film formats, e.g. cinemascope, and can optionally display 2:35 panavision anamorphic widescreen dvd's with the full vertical resolution and filling the screen vertically with only some of the sides cropped -- giving the same height image on a 32" set as on a 40". It can also magnify the stretched image (rare to combine both stretch and zoom). Widescreen TV's typically display panavision with horizontal black bars totalling 1/3 the height of the screen due to extreme width of format even when stretched to the screen sides. I haven't found these zoom settings on any other player. The format is also on panasonic tv's, but only for a 720p input still needing an upconverting player. Dig in the menus and find even more formatting than on the remote "zoom" key.

"An excellent choice" on by orrinone

Pros: Great picture; great features; great price

Cons: Waiting to find a con

Summary: If you're looking for an HD-upconverting DVD player for less than $100, look no further. This DVD player puts out a great video image, and has plenty of processing to put whatever tweaks you would want on the image. There is definitely a noticeable difference between the image from this DVD player and one from an "old fashioned" DVD player. It is not quite as brilliant as a true HD image, but it is as close as you can get from a standard DVD disc.

Another "plus" is that this will play virtually any type/format of disc that you put in it. I only use it for DVD's and regular audio CD's but there are probably a lot of people out there who would appreciate this player's versatility.

I have heard complaints that this DVD player takes too long to "warm up." True, it takes about 5 seconds between the time you hit "power" to the time the DVD tray will eject to accept a DVD to play. But come on, people, were those 5 seconds really so precious? Did you miss something important? I have also heard silly complaints about the remote control not having an "eject" button on it. Seriously, why would you want to eject it if you were not going to be right there to grab the DVD from the tray? Do you want the DVD/tray to sit open for a while to "cool off" or something? Do you want to have it ejecting while you are getting up from the couch so you don't have to wait another 2 seconds for it to eject after you've gotten up?

Bottom line - get this HD-upconverter while you wait for others to sort out the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray debate. You won't be disappointed, unless you have no patience at all.

"Cheap and great 1080i picture" on by bob strongstein

Pros: Easy hook-up and formatting, easy to read owners manual, cheap.

Cons: A few minor issues but all & all can find any - so far great

Summary: Have Panasonic 42" plasma with Panasonic SA-XR70 digital amp - switched cables from old JVC, used audio optical, added HDMI to HDTV, picture through component a small improvement, through HDMI - jumps off screen - looks as good as HDTV, all this for $84 @ Circuit City. HAve Toshiba 32hl66 in den, tried with LCDHDTV and nearly as good as on Plasma

"great DVD player" on by f1racer24

Pros: use with HDMI cables and optical cables

Cons: no eject button with the included remote

Summary: Great DVD player and when hooked up properly the pictures and movies just jump out. The con of not having a open/close button is not a big one since I have the TH-42PX60U plasma TV also, its remote has this button on it an dit works...one remote for the DVD player, TV and Cable box...not bad.

But I would commend this DVD player if you are getting a plasma or LCD with HDMI and use this connections!!!
