"Stay away from Sony DVD Recorders"
1.5 starson by casboPros: Creates DVD disks ok but ...
Cons: You can't see the video files on a PC.
Summary: Sony hides all VOB and VIDEO TS folders after burning on their decks. (I tested it myself and spoke with a Sony rep who agreed that this is the case with their model.) So if you plan to edit any of the footage on a PC or Mac, forget it. You're locked into Sony's DRM Hell. Stay away!

I want something that will allow me to edit old home movies that I convert from VHS.

He did not say that his PC could not play the DVD. He said you could not find the Video TS folders to edit them on your PC. If you can't edit what you record... then for the literate people on this discussion, this deck is USELESS! He isn't crazy, just over your comprehension. Good post casbo... it doesn't fill my need (I do video depositions), so you helped alot. Don't listen to these guys... they just want all the andy griffith re-runs!

Well, I've had this for 4 months and I agree with the people who say they have problems with playback on their PC. I bought a Dell recently and all the DVD player software on it choke when I try to play finalized DVDs. They may play for a little bit, but then the disks seize up. The same holds true on my brother's computer.

I need to find out what software my co-worker uses on his laptop. The disks I burned seemed to work fine on his computer.

Also, editing has been a real chore. You have to rip your DVD using some ripping software (like DVDFabDecrypter) before you can edit it on your PC.

As far as the video quality goes, I'm generally happy. It records a little dark, but looks pretty good when I play back on my DVD and adjust the brightness. Have had good results archiving old DVDs.

Sony is big on protecting content for RIIA and their own movie company. For this reason their products are intentionally designed to prevent use or manipulation of copyrighted data. Apple products do likewise, yet there are some products which allow more freedom. Which you choose depends on what your intentions of use are.

Somethings wrong with your rig, Casbo. My PC has no trouble playing the disks that I burn with my RDR-VX500.

popeye
