"Much better than I expected."

4 stars  | on by llinmd

Pros

Set up took 20 minutes-hooked up through my AV receiver. It really did a great job copying a 19 year old VHS tape to DVD with the touch of 1 button. I already used it to watch DVD and listen to CDs through my AV receiver. I bought it refurbished.

Cons

The instructions were complicated by too many options - Had to pick the right setup. I haven't tried any DVD editting features yet. Playback on my computer had poor color and intermittant purple spots - this wasn't evident on a DVD player.

Summary

I read a lot of negative reviews on this item, as well as other DVD-VHS dubbing recorders. I'm using it strictly for doing that type of dubbing, so other features like recording TV are not on my radar.

I was expecting that I'd have to futz around with this recorder, but I was pleasntly surprised. After deciphering all the possible setup connections, I finally chose the one I though pertained to me. It was so simple, that I wasn't expecting it to work, but VOILA! On the first shot!
After dubbing my first VHS tape (it is 19 years old), I immediately tried to watch it on another DVD player. Didn't work! I went back to the instruction book - I hadn't "finalized the DVD". I should have known.
I guess that's my biggest gripe - the instruction manual. It seems like it was translated and laid out from Japanese into English and the translation is a little clunky. Also, it helps to read through some things before thinking you know how to do it. Like the "finalize" thing. The instructions for dubbing were concise, but the necessity to finalize and instructions how to finalize were like 15 pages later - in a different section.
Other than that, so far, I'm very pleased. I bought it refurbished on eBay, so I paid more than $200 less than the suggested retail price. I still need to get into doing the DVD titling and editting, but looking forward to making some creative DVDs from past homemade VHS video.
