Pros Easy to use, never got a "coaster"
Cons flip panel on remote control
Summary This is an excellent HDD/DVD recorder. It has all the features you can want and does exactly what it advertises.
Editing menus can get a bit complicated but once you figured it out you can easily edit anything you want. You can change the aspect ratio on the recordings, compression rates, combine recordings, edit chapters (great for removing commercials), create menus, dub from HDD to disc and vice-versa, capture from camcorders etc.
Never once has this recorder burned a "coaster" (bad disc that turns into a cup coaster). I use Maxell and memorex DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs almost exclusively. DVD-RAM discs are a bit more complicated to properly manage and since they're more expensive I only have the one that came with the unit and rarely use it.
HDD recording is pretty straightforward and with the program menu I record shows automatically, especially helpful when used with VCR plus codes. Who needs Tivo when you've got this baby.
My only complaint is the stupid flip panel on the remote control to access the VCR plus button and number keys (for changing TV channels).
This unit is highly sensitive to poor quality discs though. If you use the cheap brands it often refuses to read them or burn them. I didn't get coasters though, it just simply refuses to burn on poor quality discs. I have a 100% success rate with Maxell DVD-R 8X 4.7GB discs (300 discs burned so far)
There are firmware updates available but I've never installed them. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Pros i have had two units within 14 months and had the same problems on both units the band or the belt on the dvd tray has broke twice.
Cons nice unit to store your videos. records very good .excellent playback.
Summary if you encounter problems and have to deal with toshiba directly expect long delays poor communication. for what this unit costs. i expect better quality and most all expect better customer support in a more resonably, exceptable time span. they have tied me up for almost one month and still have not received my replacement.they did agree to replace this unit with a different unit at my request considering i have had two with the same problems. so be prepared to have long delays if you have to deal with toshiba direct. our time is not important to them there mission is money money money.
Pros This product will record on a different type of DVD-R ! I have tried a variety of Discs. Good product for the money.Excellent picture . .
Cons The manual is a good guide but it's complicated to read
Pros The features are incredible and quality is top notch. Very compatible with my other two DVD players. So far (only used for 2 wks) no problems at all with quality, reliability or missing key functions. Just loaded with features, but on-screen GUI makes
Cons Feature set is a bit overwhelming the first few days but onscreen menus help you through it. The manual is very thorough but poorly written, and with no index! Two week's work by a competent tech writer would do wonders for it.
Pros Lots of features and vast Lit.
Cons With no upgradeable OS, short warranty, many complex parts and poor English literature, this unit will spend lots of time in repair at high prices. Good pieces but obsolete already.
