  • "great VCR replacement"
    on by bustertoad

    Pros Free basic tivo

Cons Tivo promps for upgrade are annoying

Summary I wanted a hard drive recorder to replace the old VCR and this did the trick nicely. Been using it over two years now with very few problems. Rebate on purchase was not accepted by Tivo since I didn't subscribe to their upgraded service. The basic Tivo works great. Occasionally it will record the wrong program but I can't determine if it is the recorders fault or Direct TV. Tivo updates on station channel changes are worthless because you can't audit 350 channels to see what changes and they don't tell you. I can keep a whole slew of movies for future watching and have not run out of room yet.Over all it is a great unit as long as Tivo stays in business. Without Tivo I do not know if it would work.

  • "i love tivo"
    on by ik3908

    Pros tivo interface, dvd player

Cons sometimes response time is a little slow, rebooting occasionally to access network

Summary i love this thing. i have had it for over a year and i can't imagine life without it. the interface is sleek and easy to use. you have similar options with cable dvrs nowadays, however, tivo is still a little easier to use.

also, the main benefit of tivo over cable dvr's is the potential to add neat options. right now it's fairly limited...you can listen to music and see photos on your tv which really isn't too exciting. you can download to your laptop too...it's neat, but not really useful for me. the best option not yet available is the ability to que up any movie from the internet...kinda like netflix without the usps involvement. this would beat movies-on-demand because the selection would be greater, although it wouldn't be "on-demand"...although if they work on queing up movies, you might get what u want when u want it.

in terms of cost, it's more than with your cable company, but not that much more...you have to get digital cable with your cable company and pay for the dvr rental, so it could come out more with your cable company.

  • "Had for one year. Never had problem. Would recommend"
    on by aces1202

Pros Functionality and ease of use. Dependable. Nice remote. Works well with Cable

Cons Not recommended for Hi Def TV. Doesn't have the inputs.

Summary I strongly recommend this unit as it has worked for me. Of course, I bought this a year ago and I'm sure there are newer and better models out there. I just appreciate how this has been very dependable and didn't give me a hard time. Now that I have HD, I sadly have to start looking for another TiVo unit. :(

  • "Not good at all"
    on by aarongobo

Pros It has an okay dvd player and an optical out...

Cons It is Tivo... this is my first box with tivo and it is HORRIBLE... last time I am buying any thing to do with Tivo...

Summary Because it is preloaded with the tivo firmware... you need to use tivo, I tried to plug in my telephone cord and it doesn't work... there are so many cons so I'm not even going to list them... DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!

  • "Great unit that breaks fast"
    on

Pros This unit has a wonderful ease of use. The Tivo works great and is better than an old vcr. The remote is fine for me although some do not like it. The picture is good as is the dvd player

Cons Had the unit only two months and it fried. I have been in talks with Toshiba that told me I need to make arrangements to have it sent to them. I asked them if I could take it to a local Toshiba repair shop and was told NO CHANCE! Only they can work on
