"You got it, it plays it and plays it well"
Pros: extremely high picture quality, tolerant of damaged discs, plays anything
Cons: slow responses to eject button, limited text displayed when viewing a burned disc
Summary: I kind of worked backwards when I bought this DVD player. Normally, I buy whatever the best model is based on reviews. This time, I had limited selections available locally and checked reviews of all of them to see which models had the least drawbacks.
The Yamaha S5750 hasn't disappointed me, just as no Yamaha AV gear I've ever owned has.
There are two quirks to this player. The first is it's slow to load a disc. When you press the eject button, you have to wait perhaps 2 or 3 seconds for the tray to open. No big deal but if you're used to "bam! It's open!" you may press the button twice thinking the first press didn't register. The second push just cancels the eject.
2nd quirk: if you play a burned DVD or CD, the Yamaha will generate a "list menu" of what playable files and folders are on it. The drawback is there are only a limited number of characters displayed for each entry so long names are truncated. This doens't affect playback but can be confusing if you're trying to find a particular file to play. The workaround is to use short filenames.
There are versions of this player with silver or black faceplates. I suggest the silver one, which I own. A friend of mine has the black version and it makes it very difficult to read the button labels on the face of the unit. Not a big deal.
Drawbacks aside, picture and sound quality of this unit are outstanding. Functions like slow-motion and fast forward are flawless. I use this DVD player connected to a 37-inch HDTV which makes image artifacts easy to detect. There aren't any. For a budget DVD player, the Yamaha delivers quality comparable with units costing hundreds of dollars more.
The Yamaha DV-S5750 easily plays discs that don't play in other players due to scratches or just due to the degradation that happens over time with burned discs. I have DVD+R's and CD-ROM's dating back two years that all work fine in this unit.
The remote control that comes with the unit is functional and easy to use. I find myself only picking it up a few times a month though as my TV's universal remote lets me access most of the functions I would want on the DVD player.
Highly recommended - don't hesitate to buy this DVD player.
