Pros Lightwieght, clean sound, incredible battery life
Cons PC Sync software leave a bit to be desired
Summary Overall, this product is everything I expected, and then some. With just shy of six hours recording time at the loudest mic setting and the highest quality sound (and over 22 hours at low quality), this recorder picks up the faintest sounds from soft speakers and mumblers and replays them very clearly - oftentimes it seems the replay is clearer than the original conversation! Simple, intuitive controls; ten minutes of playing with it will cover just about everything it can do with it.
My complaints are few. One is that it records mono only (no stereo); though I could care less about this, this may be a concern to some people. The sync time can take a while - give a one-hour recording at high quality between four and six minutes to synchronize. The other is also very minor - once you sync the recordings to a PC, they cannot be sync'ed back to the device. However, the PC DOES ask if you wish to delete the original recording from the device, to which I admittedly said 'yes'. So if you don't want it deleted from the device, you have been warned at least once by either the device or the PC. Hardly a design flaw. We'll write it off as 'user error'.
Now the best part: the promised 25 hours of battery life? I would've been happy with that, but I'm up to 34 hours on the original set of batteries I purchased for it, and they're just now starting to flash a low battery signal. Even better, a friend of mine has the same recorder with Energizer e2 lithium batteries in it - and he's past 60 hours on the original set, still reading full battery strength.
For less than $70, I would be shocked for anyone to be dissatisfied with this product. I have been so impressed by it, in fact, that I will now consider Olympus for other electronics, where I wouldn't have given them much thought before this.
Pros Works great with XP Service Pack 2
Cons No software upgrade to Vista
Summary I had this unit for a month and loved it. I used "Switch" to go from win to mp3 and thereby listen to radio shows on my mp3 player.
But then I bought a new Laptop with Vista. It took me hours of going back and forth with very nice people at Olympus to realize - IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.
Luckily, my desktop still is XP OS. But add to the incompatability of the Olympus with Mac that it won't work with Vista and you have a really limited (why?) product.Updated
Finally! I just downloaded the latest fix for Vista from the Olympus website. The Olympus VN 960PC now works beautifully with Vista. I change my rating to a 10. Way to go Olympus. I hope all the other naysayers will review their internet critques of this product.
Pros Compact and efficient.
Cons Can no longer use the recorder because it is not recognized y Windows 7 and the Olympus site does not have any driver updates for Windows 7.
Summary The product has made itself irrelevant by not being available for Windows 7.
