Pros Transfer files to pc, mp3 format easily available
Cons Extremely limited battery life, limited functions with packaged software
Summary Great looking piece of hardware that's easy to use. I really like the availability of the USB connection to transfer files to pc in many optional formats. It records my professors well in a room with 137 students and I sit 2 or 3 rows back from front. However, there are several negatives. File transfer takes an excessively long time. I've got a VAIO vgn-txn, its small but is sufficient to my needs and during transfer all pc processes seemed excessively slow also. I prefer the mp3 format so I can listen to lecture with an ipod while studying at the library. But the included software, as basic as it is, doesn't allow you to modify the files once they are converted to mp3. So you have to save the file in an alternate format, perform modifications, then save as an mp3. All are seperate files. Side note: A 1.75 hr lecture is about 8mb on the highest quality setting as an mp3. The hands down worst characteristic of this model is battery life. It uses 2AAAs, my first pair lasted just under 3 days of lecture. That's ~11.5 hrs lecture, ~20 min of familiarization after opening it, and about 1.5-2 hrs of time transferring files to pc. Subsequent battery changes have yielded the same results. Im going through 2 pairs of AAAs a week. To give perspective, ea AAA = 11.5 g, 4 per week x 16 weeks is 736 g which is about 1.6 lbs of AAA batteries. Im going to need at least 64 batteries to make it through the semester. At WalMart a 20 pack is $10.52, I'll spend at least $31.56 on those and a few dollars more for the leftovers. Apparently this is common to other Sony models, according to my classmates who have other versions of this recorder. Bottom line, until Sony gets onboard with better rechargeable battery technology, it's not worth it. I wish I would have looked for some objective reviews of this before I bought the one that looked good.
Pros Many options and functions, sleek, user friendly, supports hundres of hours of recording.
Cons Weak battery life, background hiss while recording, no LED backlight.
Summary This recorder is wonderful. Looks nice and has many functions and options for recording.
It was used to casually record music practice sessions for reference to future practices, and helped out a lot. The quality was not top-notch, but it was not kicking dirt either. Instead, it was an above average and pleasant sound.
However, in the first session, it had hissing in the recording. Very common in recordings, so I used a filter and a separate microphone. Problem solved.
Another issue was a poor battery life. However, I just bought rechargeable AAA batteries, and another problem was solved.
The only thing that was disappointing was the lack of LED backlight. For something that nears 100 USD, a LED backlight is almost a necessary component.
Pros It is a Sony, It isn't expensive, It DOES work with Vista, It is easy to erase your files, The software is ver easy to understand.
Cons The only con that I can see is the plastic casing. I do wish it came with a case cover.
Summary It is very easy to use and the software is readable with Vista. I ha had no trouble with it. This makes my 3rd semester with this particular recorder. I have not had battery trouble like some others have said. I have a friend that has a panasonic who goes thru more batteries than I do. Everything I have ever owned made by Sony, has been really nice.
Pros Compact And Easy To Conceal
Cons The battery life is abysmal...while I appreciate the LED time display, it sucks a lot of juice out of very expensive AAA batteries; and they cost a bundle...I'm not a big fan of rechargable batteries.
Summary If anybody can help me out with how to erase what's on these units, I would appreciate it. When I hit the "erase button", it does flash, and following instructions, I hit the "stop button"...there is constant flashing, but no erasing..what gives?
Pros Very good voice pick up
Cons No software for Vista
Summary I purchased this recorder to record some important meetings. My operating system is Vista Ultimate. I went to Sony's web page and downloaded the updated software for Vista. It will not install on my computer. Customer service is terrible. No help at all. I tried all suggestions but Sonys tech support people are blowing out suggestions like they are a dime a dozen. They don't know how to trouble shoot the problem.
