"Lingo is very good, and not deserving of the criticism levelled at it by the plebes."
Pros: Easy to install, excellent sound quality & fantastic features.
Cons: 99% dependability. Need to turn off power to router for 5 minutes to reset once in a while when dial tone goes out. Pretty rare occurrence.
Summary: This is an excellent feature packed phone service with unlimited free long distance to US, Canada, and free Europe. Me thinks that many of the bad reviews are written by people withn agenda or have been planted by the competition. If you call Europe at all this is an excellet phone service and costs less all in than the taxes and hidden charges on a regular phone bill. Outstanding. Definitely the wave of the future. Also has unlimited calling plans to Asia. Wow!Updated
Lingo is an excellent service and value.

You must've just started with them. For us, the only complain was slowness in getting our number ported over. Well, that's because those were the sales people. As soon as something goes wrong, you'll be calling into India and getting someone who could care less, doesn't listen and repeats a script. I actually think they're being told by the executives to deny all claims and give the runaround because this can't be without purpose.
So why don't you do an update when things go wrong and you'll see why the average is 1.5 stars and you're outside of the norm here. -
You can't just assume anyone who who had a bad experience or is critical of Lingo does so without cause or has an agenda. Everyone's experience is different. The sound quality was awful, so was the customer service. That was just my experience. I'm sure you got excellent service. Congratulations. I sure didn't.

I know 3 people who have gone through terrible hardship because of lingo. Their practices are unethical and illegal. I've spent over 5 hours on the phone and 3 months trying to get them to cancel my service. Lingo should not be allowed to operate within the United States or UK.

The sound quality is exceptional, as good as any land line. True, it drops the odd long distance call, and I sometimes have to re-boot the Lingo router when I have no dial tone. But everything has been improving even since I started using Lingo last February, and I believe the quality & technology is improving on all fronts. VOIP is definitely the wave of the future and it's happening now. Thumbs up for Lingo, a killer service for the money.

Have had lingo now for almost a year ...wouldn't change for anything .I've saved over $1000 over last years phone bills to my family and friends in Europe. Enough so I can now go and visit them.
And I'll take my lingo modem with me so I can call back home. -
I'm a very regular user like you (never been affiliated with anybody, or "planted" as you say). Lingo is a very low quality service, why should we deny the truth... I'm writing this while holding to get someone from Lingo to cancel my service... I'm still holding, and my cellphone minutes are running... I hope you understand how frustrating to hold for 20-30 minutes and having your minutes disappearing!
-
- very inconsistent quality
- service unavailable 45% of the time
- have to hold for 20 and 30 mins to get to customer service (cust. Service in Canada)
- a trableshooting call can easily take 20-30 mins
- echo, buzzing, clicking voice quality
don't be fulled by the "unlimited" calls to Europe and north america, chances are you won't have dial tone when you need to use them.
Will NEVER NEVER go back to Lingo, period! -
I did a lot of research before committing three people to switch from regular PSTN service to VoIP. I saw that Lingo had the most features and the best price, considering it has free calling to Canada and Western Europe. Their referral program is great, I can't stop recommending it to my family, I have gotten several months of free service by taking advantage of this opportunity.
Call quality is great, on DSL and Cable. Lots of features!!!!!!!
The adapter works fine, I restarted the adapter a couple times at service arrival, but turned out to be a problem with my router. Customer service guide thru the steps of using DMZ on the adapter, to better handle call packets. Ever since the service is great and no complains. -
I wish I liked it as much as you do, but Lingo just plain sucks for me. No, I am not a plant by a competator, either. I am a customer who's really disappointed in Lingo. It's a headache for me to have to change phone numbers again, but I can't stay with Lingo.

My experience using Lingo since January is similar. I have occasional problems but the trend has been towards increasing reliability and better sound quality. Some early issues were handled well and once I had my router configured properly to work with Lingo's adapter, things have been good. I call Europe a lot and this has save me a great deal of money. The sound quality, at worst, was like a cell phone. It was always intelligible. Problems with busy signal making a call was because a few ports on my router were closed. Once I opened them, no more problems. CSRs helped me do this quickly. If I had put the adapter first as Lingo advises and then connected my router to the adapter I could have avoided some of these issues. For techical reasons I chose not to but Lingo folks helped me anyway.
