"Run...Run AWAY from Packet8"
Pros: Cheap. Easy setup
Cons: Poor call quality. Frequent outages. POOR Customer Server. Billing Errors
Summary: I signed up for packet8 last November. The price was good, and,
initially, quality was, well, acceptable for the price. However, I did
not have E911 service although they promised that I could get it.
Quality began to degrade in the Feb-Mar timeframe. Significant echoes,
conversation crashes (worse than a cell phone), and significant
reliability issues began to surface. Additionally, I found that E911
had been available, but that they wouldn't respond to my requests to
hook it up for me. Finally, in May, I'd had enough. I asked them to
disconnect, and, even though poor quality and service caused me to
disconnect, and even after them saying that they wouldn't charge a
disconnect fee, we've gotten 2 "monthly" bills, plus the disconnect
fee in less than 2 weeks. Let's see, billing issues, unresponsive to
customers, and poor quality. I can't recommend them.

I am a web developer and also resell Packet8 services. I won't recommend anything to a client that I have not tried myself so I have Packet8 at home. As a result of my own experiences I no longer offer Packet8 to my customer. They have too many problems with both technical and customer service/billing. I have had 2 of 2 ( 100% ) of my first customers wait months for number porting with Packet8 paying no attention to the delays unless you call and complain over and over.
In short I do not recommend them any longer. They, like too many American businesses have forgotten or never understood how important good customer service is. Stay away from Packet8 -
Can Packet8 be used outside of the US? Say ,Africa in a cyber-cafe environment?

I signed up for Packet8 in May 2005. It was very easy to set up and the audio quality was initially very good. The Features that Packet8 listed were somewhat misleading however. Anonymous Call Reject never worked!! Never!! The Caller ID feature only provided a number, no name.
Earlier this year, the call quality became atrocious, particularly on local calls. Echos and packet loss were constant and very annoying. I had to literally tell a caller that I would have to hang up and call them back on my land line. What a pain.
Then, Packet8 disconnected my service without notice and/or any type of warning. No email, no snail mail, no voice message, no knock on my door. Using my landline, I finally got thru to Customer Service and was advised that the credit card that they had on file had expired and they needed updated info. Well, Packet8 Rocket Scientists, had you let me know, I would have given you the requested information. Instead, you disconnected my service.
The last straw with this company came on June 6 when Packet8 sent all subscribers an email announcing that Caller Id with Name would be up and running on June 9. Today is July 1, 2006, and Caller ID with name is NOT up and running. I still have echos and packet loss when I make a local call and Customer Service and Tech Support still suck.
As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for--only with Packet8, you get practically nothing.
I do not work for a competitor. I am simply a working stiff looking for a quality VOIP provider. BYE BYE PACKET8!! -
I have been using Packet8 for 5months now in which time I have had no problems with the service, but had questions regarding what certain terms were and minor questions as to when do I need to pay the bill. These were the first questions when getting the service from Packet8. I know most all businesses assume you are computer literate when dealing with the latest technology. Customer Support was very nice eager to assist in the matters of question and were also not to just hang up after answering your question but ask if there is anything else they could help with .
Now that is customer service!
By the review ggw98 gave it just seems very suspect to why those negative things were said. But, to give the benefit of the doubt I am confident Packet8 has cleared those negatives up.
Put your money in Packet8 for all the features you get for less than traditional phone line service. I give Packet8 a 10!! -
The service at Packet8 is exceptional 24/7. Reps go out of their way to help resolve issues and answer questions. I've been a customer for almost a year now and have called a couple of times. It's the best customer service I've received from any technology company...period.
This person must be a "shill" or is talking into the wrong end of the telephone. -
I have Packet8 and don't have issues with quality or drop outs. If I do they are far and few between and I'd put my money on internet congestion. I'm on a 1+Mbit DSL connection.
