"I use Skype in Korea to talk to family in the States. It works GREAT!!"
Pros: Great sound quality... delay is comparable to cell phone delay (very litte). useful voicemail features. very cheap
Cons: little product support. must have computer on to use. It would be nice if vendors would produce a phone with built-in software/wi-fi support
Summary: I have researched a lot of the VOIP solutions on the market and this is by far the best bang for the buck. The sound quality is excellent and I like the "pay for only what you use" buisness model. Vonage makes you pay a monthly fee regardless of what you use. Skype's call average around 2 cents a minute.
The Skype-In plan is what really made me fall in love with this product. I am in the Air Force stationed in Korea. I purchased a local state-side phone number for $34/year. My friends and family call me from the states all the time and I don't pay a penny extra. All incoming calls are free. They don't even have to have Skype installed on their computer to call me either which is great.
The voicemail feature works great too. It's like having a stateside answering machine. Anyone can leave a voicemail up to 1o minutes long.
Skype-out is great too. It's only 2 cents a minute to call to the U.S. regardless of where you're calling from. I actually only use Skype-Out for the first minute. Since I have Skype-In, I make the initial Skype-Out call to my friends/family cell phone, ask them to call me back, and then I don't even have to pay the 2 cents a minute. Since they get charged the same on their cell phone calling my state-side phone number, regardless of whether it's local to them or not, it doesn't cost them anymore either. Another benefit to having them call me back on my Skype-In number is that for some reason, my connection is always a little bit clearer when my call is a Skype-In call vs. a Skype-Out call. The delay is very minimal which really suprised me.
I would recommend Skype to anyone who has a need to make frequent international phone calls. It's the ideal VOIP solution.
