"Satisfactory over two years"
Pros: Escaped taxes and tiresome add-on charges of regular phone service
Cons: Slowly creeping charges
Summary: Vonage has been very good for over two years. We had some issues with call quality, or my wife did, especially for international dialing and dial-arounds (via tel3.com) to Honduras, but I haven't heard any complaints after I raised the band usage option on our account. The voice quality for Vonage (and probably most VoIP telephony) depends greatly on the quality of one's internet connection. I started Vonage on DSL and it was mediocre, but so was the DSL. It improved somewhat with cable, which was semi-mediocre, and it is great with Fios optical; and I've had no complaints whatever since I cranked up the bandwidth usage. My complaint now is that their charges have started creeping upwards. Premium used to be around 25 but now creeping towards 30. Additional lines used to be cheaper but are now same as first. My complaint in general about all telephone companies are all the add-on charges and that every possible governing jurisdiction figures out eventually that telephony is an inelastic source of virtually nothing-in-return tax revenue. VoIP is great in that respect, but I fear this is starting to creep in with VoIP. On the other hand, Vonage has a unique tool at their Web page that calculates exactly what your signup and monthly charges will be for your location, including government taxes. No other phone company so easily shares that information up front. And the nearly complete Web-based control over the various features is just unbeatable.
